i will add his name to my rom credits
you've mastered jpg transparency, omg, where have u been hiding,i have a few 100 jpeg icons i'd love to make transparent, please share your secret
Instead of jpg transparency, is it possible to modify source to read png instead of jpg?

If I haven't given you link, it's above. Just click it
Photoshop gives me an error, an unknown or invalid jpeg marker was found while opening. I looked up the error and it means that the file, though saved as a jpeg image, isnt really a jpeg. its extenstion has been changed. i renamed it to png and it worked fine. Tiff didnt work either. So its just a png renamed as jpeg. Theoretically, true jpeg images cannot have transparency
yes i already tested ur idea
but not working
but it works fine with sense 4 lockscreen jpg

So it is not working ive read some where that we can make transparent background by using adobephoto shop ...........
Guys, stop trying, transparency is supported in PNG & GIF only.
yes i know
but renaming method works
just make a background transparent in png and then rename image to jpg
Finally
after 18 months of trying, with abit of help, i've finally learned how to make transparent jpeg icons and its without photoshop or gimp

Open New file in photoshop, dimensions same as pic you wanna edit, drag pic from desktop to it! Now in the right side select the right layer and change opacity !
This is how I do it, don't know if works on jpg
Sent.....just sent
anyway thanks
but it not works with jpg
my renaming method works
just convert image to png, edit it and add transparent background and save it
then rename it to jpg
here's the trick
you will NEVER get transparent jpeg icons in photoshop or gimp, trust me, I've tried for 18 months, here's what I was shown..........
if using a windows pc, go to folder options, make it look like the picture I've uploaded then every icon will have its type on the end such as .png, all you have to do is rename it to jpg, then choose yes when menu appears and viola, you have transparent jpeg icons, I to couldn't believe how simple it was, I've made 450 transparent jpg icons in the last 2 days for my mods
Closed
Stop that nonsense now.
Read jpg-format definition (google it). It does not include any transparency channel. There is no such thing as a transparent jpg.
How funny is the idea to rename a png to jpg? If you rename Mark Zuckerberg to Pamela Anderson, he will not become a woman! A PNG stays a PNG no matter how you name it.
Additionally that thread is Off Topic.

Can someone recommend me a theme generator that can output for WM6 and do separate portrait/landscape images? I've been using Themegence, but it seems that the options it has for image output are lies - it saves the image for the theme as a GIF no matter what you choose, which dithers the image due to the color limitations of the GIF format. If there was an option that fixed that, I'd go with it completely.
Thememaker McDeb did not do this, but does not support separate landscape images.
Commercial or freeware, if anyone knows of one that fits the description, I'll gladly try it.

Yes ThemeGenCE lies ! but to Windows Mobile. For convenience my program use gif extension no matter what you choose as format.
But you can test the images with these extension. The format you choose is preserved. It is only the extension which is not correct.
I do like this because Windows Mobile (and Windows Desktop, since Windows 98) recognize the real format of images independantly of it extension.
You can try this in Windows. Change, for instance, jpg to png extension and open the image with Preview or Paint. It works !

Yes, I tested and came to the same conclusion around an hour after I posted this question. It is, however, rather time-consuming and inconvenient to have to copy/rename 4 files every time I make a theme. Any chance of changing the output to BMP in the next release?
I'm very happy with the program otherwise. Thanks for a great piece of software.

I set it to PNG, but I have tried every other format listed. What purpose do these options serve? The make no difference in quality or format of the output - your program appears to be hard-coded to write GIF files. The program displays GIF filenames in this tab:
Do what I said here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2174568#post2174568 by creating your own images ! and putting them in the program folder.
Do not choose png in ThemeGenCE as it is not well adapted (choose jpg or bmp instead)

Would it be possible for you to provide png version, I don't want to convert jpeg to png because it will definitely loose the crispness.

Hi,

Hi there ... my question is for the people who have a clue in editing images .... tried searching here, also in google, but can`t find the answer I`m looking for.
Everyone that has tried to edit a manila file with a .png or .bmp inside has seen that some pictures have PINK background (boarders) that look transparent when installed on the phone. I will attach a picture as example of course ...
So when I try to edit such image using a photo software (for example Photoshop) and save the image after a change or two, I get that PINK to show in my image on the phone .... when it`s not edited the background is still PINK but it never shows up .... so this PINK color is some kind of transparent background that works in a different way than the normal transparent layer that I add to pictures in order to be transparent ....
The perfect example ... I install a SKIN for Resco Explorer ... the skin has a .skn file and 3 png files that are the icons that are used inside the software. All 3 files are with PINK boarders, so when I install them they show completely transparent on the phone ... when I edit them and remove the PINK at all from the image and make that same PINK transparent, the icons are not transparent any more but with WHITE background .... That happens ONLY ON these pictures that have that PINK background by default. If I take a normal image that has no PINK boarders and make it transparent it shows also transparent in my phone. The second try with the png files with the icons for Resco is by editing the file without removing the PINK background ... let`s say I change an icon and then when I save the image and put it in my phone ... I can see the pink behind the edited icon .... when I try to copy just the pink and make it a layer it shows PINK on my phone ....
So in less words ... is there a way to make my own PINK background to look transparent, like in the original files, and is there some kind of tutorial on how to do that .... cause it`s really different when you try to edit an image with that kind of background and a normal transparent background ... it just shows up differently in phone !
Hope people that have worked with photoshop know what I`m talking about.
Thanks for your time reading this whole thing and really hope that someone could help me ... thanks in advanced !
P.S. Uploading 2 images ... 1 is from the phcanImages.dll that has all Images from the Dialer screen , and the other is a png file with icons for resco explorer. Both have that PINK background and both show up differently when that pink is replaced with a normal transparent layer !
Well, a bmp picture won´t give you transparency options.
Attached, see your example as a png picture.
Don´t know about your settings in Photoshop...
And how did u manage to make it look like that .... and if I save that file as .png will I get the PINK background again ?
Ok ... so I tried to save the bmp as png ... the pink background was still there when I saved it as png .... I tried to make it transparent but I don`t know how , cause that is neither Raster or Layer ... it`s background and I cant get it transparent .... I tried another thing ... I made a transparent background ... added a layer and draw custom lines.. then saved the image as .bmp .... I got an image with white background instead of transparent .... how can I get that PINK background that the phone recognizes as transparent and save it as BMP file ???
Ok ... let me put it that way ... someone can really help if he can .... how to make a transparent background in a BMP file ?

This is not possible so far i know!
If you download the attached file ... you`ll see that there is a PINK background that doesn`t show in the phone ... so phone recognizes it as transparent .... I`m asking how can I do such background on a BMP file ......
Anybody
I actually noticed this while messing around with a dialer, it seemed that the pink areas were indeed transparant on the phone. I was able to copy the pink colour to make The answer/ignore slider transparent if i wanted to. No idea if you can create a new image and have tranceparency tho.
try to save it as gif on the PhotoShop and then try to change its extension to bmp, it may work that way. cheers
I`m sure that here are people that have edited tons of bmp files .... it`s absolutely impossible no one to know how can I make transparent parts on a bmp file .... renaming gif to bmp didn`t work !!!!!!

OMG, you can never do this!, contents on file is the same, you are ONLY changing the file extension. If you, for example, create a .wav file and then change it to .mp3 it doesn't convert to an MP3 file, it's only a WAV file with a xxxx.mp3 name, so, as content isn't mp3, you can't read it in a mp3-only player.
Now, with that in mind, an BMP file format (And JPG's by the way) don't have any way to establish transparency or semi-transparency (like alpha in PNG's format.). So many programs needing transparent pixels on BMP files have used along many years a especific RGB color (also called Mask color) that isn't used often in pictures, like a bright pink or a bright green, (pink being the most used). This way, a program reading this file detect pixels with this EXACT color and do their magic ignoring those pixels making them transparents.
This pink color is R:255, G:0, B:255 or #ff00ff in hex.
Green in turn is R:0, G:255, B:0 or #00ff00 in hex.
NOTE: NEVER use JPG format when working with this type of masking, as JPG compression adds artifacts and modifies colors slightly. You must use EXACTLY this color code for masking BMP files (you can't use for example R:254, G:0, B:255).
also dont know, sorry
+1 on post 12.
I did not know the exact color of pink (hex code) but when I worked with xdashutdown skins, the PNG's have pink background so I simply used the color picker and I have perfect transparencies every time. At least now I know the hex code for this pink. Thanks!

Thanks for your responce .... Tried everything I could , but it didn`t work out as I expected ... it still does show PINK on my phone ... don`t know why .... I use photoshop and the BMP I put in the .dll I`m trying to modify has the same hex color : 255 ; 0 ; 255 ... but still shows as pink.
Can you please try to modify the following and see if there is not a problem with the BMP itself. I`m puting the original image from the .dll and the way I would like to look (the Pink that I add must be transparent) as another image.
P.S.
Tried also to save the bmp as 16bit , 24bit and 32 bit BMP in Photoshop ... cause I read somewhere that the BMP must not be in 24bit format .... when I saved it as 16bit the PINK was saved as 248 ; 0 ; 248 .... then I dofied it again .
So I tried everything in every tutorial without luck

Ok I'll look
Update: Your pink color is ok, I think it must be the program (manila?) is not programmed to search transparency in that part of the image. If so, there is nothing you can do as far as I know, as you don't have the source code.

Cant be manila .... I`m editing phcanImages.dll ... it`s the file that has all images from the Dialer ... as I saw there were people that modified some images from the same .dll, I don`t think it`s possible some program to recognize just part of the .dll`s images color, not all the images.
So maybe I`m doing something wrong.
I really tried everything possible with the "magic color"... I know about it for a week now, it`s not new information ... so I tried really everything, read many tutorials, but it didn`t help.
Btw ... are you good at editing dll files with images ?

because i believe you are looking at .9.png's which use black borders as a guide for stretching if the file is something.9.png then that is your answer
hmm.. i haven't seem to have a problem editing the .9 PNG's, i've tried searching this forum and a few other forums and haven't found that anyone has asked this.. that particular png file name is "ic_media_play". i've also had the same problem when opening the wifi, 3g, some of the keyboard buttons, the "spinner_black_16" image. i've tried opening them in firefox then copying image, dragging them directing into photoshop and a few other things. sorry if this is a newb question...

well ic_media_play isnt a .9.png so if it has a black outline its just for the way it looks the wifi, 3g, and spinner_black_16 images you shouldnt have a problem with since they arent .9.png's either, most of the keyboard images are tho and will need to be decompiled and recompiled to get them to work correctly. im working on a theme right now and theres no easy way to edit them, oh also if you're using something like 7zip to open up the apk that might be your problem i edit most of mine in Linux so i dont remember if you can open them in Photoshop without decompiling but the best way is to decompile, edit, then recompile and there are guides out there that describe how to better than i could but search for apktool or apkmanager

first i'd like to thank you for your response. what i am doing is unzipping the contents from framework-res with winrar. (i was planning on just replacing the unzipped folders with the existing folders that are in framework-res, just overwriting them.) then i just pulled the images from the unzipped folder, res -> drawable-hdpi, into photoshop... in the unzipped folder thumbnail image, these images seem to look okay, no border/stroke around the edges, no black bg etc. but in photoshop they seem to have locked layers named "index" which i just change the mode to RGB to make the layer editable. i'm not sure what i'm doing right, i'm sure it's something i'm not doing right, i just can't figure it out - maybe i'll try a different program to unzip the folder?
i've attached a ss of the folder with the thumbnail images looking okay.
(p.s. this theme is for my gf)
I've been working on a theme also, though not for the DX... I had to completely remake the PNG's in question. I'm on OSX using Photoshop and it does the same thing. First start with an indexed color version then once you get it done on a block level convert it to an RGB 8-bit image and smooth the image with a very mild gaussian blur or lens blur... personally I use gaussian.
Here's a screenshot of mine in action... I made the "empty" signal bars hollow with a neon outline..
You'll want to use 7-zip, not sure about the black stroke on the images, sounds like a .9 PNG issue. I don't use Photoshop personally, I use Fireworks. It could be Photoshop putting the stroke on the images...If you have access to Fireworks, trying using that instead.

lol sure its for HER lol you can use 7zip/winRAR either one but use it to extract the drawable res folder out and pull them into photoshop, edit the ones you want and put them back in the one already zipped up, but if you do it that way stay away from .9.png's

i made a boot animation to match the liberty rom. it is the raising of the flag on mnt serabachi on iwo jima. i made the folder structure and the appropriate desc.txt but it wont play on my dx. Can anyone help me get this to work?
sound DO NOT WORK on liberty Rom (dont ask me why cuz i really dont know), i was checking you animation and i recommend to use at least minimum 480x320 image size and max 480x854 , as you may know you can set the animation size on the desc.txt so no need to go high and then going down on the desc.txt , that way you'll have a not heavy and lighter zip file at the end cuz 29MB for a bootanimation is kinda big using only 220 frames.....
P.S. that's one of the reason i use .jpg format instead of .png
thank you for the reply. is there any way to batch resize the pictures? i really dont want to do 220 pics individually. I CAN however, batch rename the pictures to the .jpg extension. I will do that and research how to batch resize.

well you need a plugin, but its free and so far working great! not only is it resizing all my images, but it is also changing em to .jpg at the same time.
i just finished resizing, im going to try it now.
ok i tested the boot animation again with the resized pictures in a jpg format. the size is now 480x360 because i kept the original ratio, and i made the desc.txt 480x360 at 15fps. i converted everything to .jpg and i removed the audio. i used the liberty toolbox to flash it then i confirmed it was in the right spot using root explorer. i rebooted and all that appeared was a blank screen... any suggestions?
i really would like an answer, bump
Make sure when putting all the files/images/desc file into the zip you set the compression method to STORE and not NORMAL. When my bootanims were just a black screen this is what fixed it.

if you are using WINRAR do the follow :
1- select the folders and file to compress
2- right click on you mouse/touch pad (in case you are using a laptop like me LoL)
3- select " add to archive"
4- there you can change you compression method from normal to store
5- add a name to the file and select ZIP
6- click OK
7- you're done.
if you are using 7zip is pretty much the same steps from winrar...
hope that helps
thank you so much it works now! im going to put a few finishing touches on it and post it up!

Super ..... hope to see your animation soon
a few things for future reference though,
1. what is a good gif creator? i have tried at least 10 websites and at least 6 programs and none do what i want efficiently. i want to open all 220 frames at once and make an animation rather than opening each individually like i had to.
2. what is a good video to jpg creator? i had to go frame by frame and take snapshots for my entire animation last time and i took like 2 hours:/

1 - Animated GIF Producer and Ulead GIF Animator so far are the best out there
2 - Video to JPG converter is my favorite and the best for bootanimations.
thank you, thread can be closed.
