Make android use 3G over wifi - General Questions and Answers

I live in the countryside where Internet service providers charge quite a bit for even a 6Mbit connection so I use my android for everything. I have a local network around the house for sharing files and media. Every time I need to transfer files I must turn on wifi on my android to connect to my home network, share the file, then disconnect again in order to browse the Internet on my phone. Is there any way to stay connected to my home network and still browse the Internet on my phone?

You could use an app in the market called Tasker. https://play.google.com/store/apps/...askerm&feature=nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDNd
You can set up a profile to turn on WIFI when you open the app that you are moving files with. When the app is closed Tasker will shut WIFI off.

Apparently there's an app called Super Download that enables multiplexing over both 3G and Wifi connections. I'm not sure if it will work in your situation, but I suppose it's worth a shot.

I will try both of these recommendations and hopefully one will work. Thank you

[Q] Wifi Dependability

Hey guys, I am going to try the 200mb data plan mainly because I am usually around wifi all day. Is the wifi signal dependable? Will I need to type in a password every time? If so, will it still work seamlessly under a more secure wifi connection (University of Michigan's wifi network)? Thanks

I feel the wifi signal is very dependable. i use it at work and home.
For seamless connection WITHOUT having wifi on when it doesnt need to be (i.e. Commuting) I use the app autowifi enabler. It turns on your wifi based on gps location. Wifi then connects to your predetermined access points all seamlessly.
If your schedule is concrete, you can use apps like timerriffic or tasker to do this on a schedule.

I spend a lot of time connected to wifi. As long as the AP is good, your wifi connection is good.
What I thought was, I'd become one of those deaf-mutes; or should I?

I don't understand...you are basically using your Blackberry/laptop configuration to make a mobile hotspot, right? If the Xoom can access the wifi signal for one app it should be able to for any app. Maybe I'm missing something. Can you give more explanation?

I connected my blackberry bold which has 3g to my laptop which broadcasts the connection via wifi. The chrome browser and android market and other goodies apps connect but installed apps don't connect. Plus I recently bought a huawei e5 mobile 3g wireless router. I got my xoom connected to the network but right now only the browser goes online,. The other apps just do not. I don't know what other piece of detail I can give other than the fact that my Xoom wifi is not connecting to 3g networks broadcast via wifi. Any ideas?
This is really very strange... I switched my 3G-Xoom into flight mode and then activated WiFi (so it basically behaves like a WiFi-only Version) and connected it to my mobile (Samsung Galaxy S) and all apps are able to access the internet. Connecting ist to a UMTS-Router (Option GlobeSurf) also worked like a charm...
Did you try to connect your Xoom to a WiFi-Router at home (= Internet access via cable not UMTS)? Does this work or do you encounter the same probs?

Wi-Fi simultaneous with 3g solution?

At my mountain cabin, I do not have a household internet connection, but I do have a Wi-Fi network set up strictly for media sharing. So when I connect my s3 to Wi-Fi for sharing media with DLNA, I can no longer access any internet from my phone and it assumes my Wi-Fi network is also an internet access point, which it is not. Is there any way to force the 3g radio to stay active for internet connectivity while the Wi-Fi radio is on just for media sharing?
I am on ICS rooted and unlocked, also 4g is not yet active in the mountains, so I am limited to using the 3g radio if that makes a difference....Any suggestions appreciated!

There actually is something for that, can't quite remember what its called but I'd do a search in the apps section under android apps. I'll link it if I see it again.

Since Wi-Fi tether uses both radios simultaneously it must be possible...just can't find the app anywhere....let me know if you locate it.

Thanks. That is a really cool program fir downloading from the internet, but doesn't really do what I need. All I want is to enable Wi-Fi for DLNA and other local streaming apps, but still have internet access via mobile data. For example, I would like to stream music/video/pictures remotely from my home PC via all share play on my s3 and play them on my tv via my DLNA enabled blu ray player using the remote screen option on the S3. I don't think this currently exists, but let me know if you think of any thing else. Thanks again!

Check these threads, it has been done so far successfully on Optimus G, as well as Nexus 4 phones:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1640472
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2197776
Since you are rooted, please try these methods, make them work on your phone, and post your results and any changes here. I was able to bring up wifi on my nexus 4 without bringing down my mobile data. The only glitch is that the wifi icon does not turn on, but both networks are verifyiably up, so I can ssh from the phone to my LAN (and vice versa) and I can traceroute from my phone to the outside world, or access websites, through my mobile carrier.

(App) create WiFi hotspot WHEN ON WIFI?

I am looking for an app that incan create a WiFi hotspot WHEN I am on WiFi. For example, if I'm on an aircraft and there is WiFi, I want to connect to it then create a hotspot so my other devices can tetjer to my connection (because you only are allowed one connection and its a paid service called GoGo).
So whenever im on a secure wifi connection I want to be able to create a further sub hotspot.
There's an app for my PC called Mhotspot which does exactly this. But the Android version just kills my WiFi and activates the in built Mobile Hotspot, which is not what I want.
Anyone?

WIFI

Hello all,
This is my first smartwatch, I am having some troubles connecting to certain WIFI. Is there limitations on what kind of WIFI network this watch can see and connect to? My home WIFI seems to work just fine, but when I am at work, it doesnt see all the networks, and the one it does see......it wont let me connect to? Is there any way to fix this? I am guessing it might be some sort of security settings on the WIFI at my workplace?

It may not have the functionality to connect to 5.0ghz, only 2.4ghz Wi-Fi. I can't test that because my home router is from my broadband provider. I tried a google search and the only thing that came up was that it can connect to wireless b/g/n. Nothing stating if it can or cannot connect to 5.0ghz.
it can only connect to 2.4 ghz networks.
5 ghz usually need a/ac standard to connect to.
