I have purchased the wifi 10.1, should I have gotten a carrier operated one? - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok so Ive purchased the wifi operated one for my pops. Hes old and is always back and forth on his microsoft laptop so I figured this would make things a lot easier for him. He likes it so far. He currently has a verizon flip phone that is hooked up on Page Plus. Im not sure how the carrier operated ones work or what they do, can someone explain so I can have a better understanding so I then can figure out if I should return and get him the carrier operated one.
1) Im assuming you can pop a sim card in and pay for a plan but can you make phone calls like a cell phone?
2) is this wifi tablet that he currently have able to make wifi calls atleast?
3) I cant talk him into a smartphone so he will probably never make calls with a carrier based tablet, but he may want to have a data connection continuously when out and about. So im guessing getting a carrier based one would be necessary for this.
4) again, he has a verizon flip phone running on page plus which uses verizons towers, do they make a samsung verizon galaxy tab 2 or just sprint and at&t?
5) I was also considering the galaxy tablet note but baby steps for the old man lol....but I thought he might use the tv/tablet function.......but probably not, too much explaining lol
Any info to clear some things up would be great please.....I only have 15 days to return it.

No, these are not phones, with a carrier operated on you can send text. But you can download a app called TextMe so send text free using wifi or data.

It could but it wasn't deigned for that, but at least the GT2 has front speakers. I did it once, but it was hard on the people I called to hear me.

Yes it would, other wise he has to be close to a wifi to surf the web, but wifi is in a lot of places, it would depend how good is he at connecting to other wifi's.

I love my GT2 10.1" It's connected to AT&T because that is my carrier. The Verizon one I have cost me $30 a month. (I think they got rid of the tab only plan and jammed shared data down their customers throat. So it cost $40 a month.

Yea man, thanks a lot. So basically if I did decide to get the verizon one, he may be able to use his same plan for data?
And while we are on the subject, how the heck do I get his contact off his senior flip phone to a new google account? If he still had verizon, they woukd be synced with verizon and I can grab the .csv file from there site and import in google, but now that he has page plus(verizon towers still), im not sure if he can access the verizon backup site...is there another way without inputting manually?

The international unlocked P3100 version has phone call feature. I'm debating getting this tablet for that feature since my Nexus 7 3G doesn't have it, but there's seems to be less development and the spec and screen resolution isn't as good. Although I do like having microSD slot since even the 32GB on the Nexus 7 isn't enough to hold my craps. People must like this thing a lot since I can't even find used ones for sale. Wouldn't mine more feedbacks from P3100 owners.
Also I'm confused about the carrier bands of this model, GSMArena posted:
HSDPA 900 / 2100 - GT-P3100
HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100 - GT-P3105
However I read the contrary from Amazon reviews. Can someone confirm does the P3100 version work with ATT and/or TMobile 3G? Otherwise I'll have to pass on it.

I don't know about Page Plus, and how they operate. Sounds like a prepaid account. I only use post paid, because even though prepaid my be cheap for the individual, it could get pricey for a family plan. Personally I think you should have him check out the Note 2. It is big, I owned it for a while, but if I wanted a big phone I could use as a tablet (It even comes with a S-Pen) I would use it. I am not sure how Verizon handles the contacts.

If the flip phone has something called send vcard you can do that with his contacts and then in his google account on a computer import the vcards to his contacts,I did it with my work phone they supplied me

Ok, ill check it out. Im not sure what vcard is. If I do find it in his phone, where woukd it be located? Is it software or is it an actual sd card or something. Once found do u need to plug the phone into a pc, not sure if he has data plan on his phone to send wirelessly. Thanks guys.

Got it to work using blue tooth. Sent the contacts right to my phone, synced to google, then signed in to google on the tablet and it worked like a charm.....nice. Pops is chillen now. Oh and I got it to send and receive calls on wifi.....the speakers work pretty good when on a call and quality is reasonable on both ends of call.

Swapping services

So I had the Inspire 4G on AT&T and my girlfriend became an ex and now I don't have service. I was wondering if I can swap the ROM to a Verizon ROM and run it on their network. Please help.
Short answer, no. The long answer has to do with radio frequencies and technology used. For voice and 2G data you could use T-mobile. You may have a regional service provider option also. I do not know what is available in your area.
No you can't. ATT is gsm and Verizon is cdma. You could use it on tmobile if its unlocked but will only get edge speeds.

Your best option is to sell the phone now, while its hot and get some good money off of it and buy another phone.
I personally am still pretty new to rooting and all but doesn't verizon have sim cards for their world phones?
Thanks for the information, I didn't think I would be able to. It is rooted but I need to do a complete wipe on the phone and return it to stock with root. Thanks for the help and hopefully I will be able to sell this with some scuffs on it. Maybe just try for $100 rooted.
or unlock it and use simple mobile... unlimited everything for like 60 bucks a month, ( and 3g ) no contract. but check coverage.. etc....
Why not do the most simple thing get a pay as you go phone. Swap the sim into the inspire. $50 unlimited everything. Don't try telling me it wont work either. I have used two different iphones and a blackberry on pay as you go. And dont try the different sim thing either. When I went contract they had me use the same sim. Just go get a cheap pay as you go phone register it swap the sim and try it out.
Buddy 3g won't work. The frequency bands are not compatible with tmkbile(simple mobile). Unless you got Att or a side branch that runs off at towers and signal, you will ONLY get Edge speeds end of story. Don't proven using tmobile and simple mobile.

Ok I tried to keep this nice but sense you you want to get rude about it. Let me let you in on a little secret, for the past few months att has been locking the prepaid sim cards to the phone by IMEI they are activated on for 6 months. The only way to have it unlocked is by calling them to get it unlocked in which case they want the imei of the new phone. They have also implamented the IMEI scan they do for the contract lines. So even if you have an older sim card that is not locked, After a while then will notice and data will stop working. Now How do I know this you ask? I just spent the last year as the Store manager for a local ATT retail store. So the next time you decide to be rude, you might want to take a min and think that maybe, just maybe you dont have all the facts.
And I do stand corrected on the pay-per use data. That was what it did before they started blocking it.

[Q] Get sprint to release my DEC number

I bought a new Nexus S 4G off craigslist. When i got it calling plan worked and everything. I've made several attempts to contact the seller, they did reply but they never deactivated the phone. I called Sprint, they told me they need them to release the number and provide an exchange phone to move the current plan onto.
tl;dr Is there a way to deactivate this phone if the seller decides not to cooperate with me?

No. The seller will have to deactivate the phone or activate another phone on that line which would release the nexus.
This is why you always meet the person from Craigslist at a sprint store so the store can check the status of the phone before you hand over the money. Good luck!

What are those software going to do for him, unless you're suggesting something wink wink like ESN modifying
O.P is out of luck unless the seller deactivates the line (pays the bill/cancels the contract e.t.c). Next time, take 2 mins call customer service and verify ESN/MEID before exchanging cash.
So the phone is still on his plan? Hmmm time to start charging some Gameloft games to his account and some adult phone numbers. Might as well screw him over since he is doing the same to you

1. you can call sprint to verify that an ESN is clean - no need to meet in a Sprint store, wait in line, etc.
2. (referring to the above quote) Just because the phone is tied to someone's account does not mean that you can charge things to it, call porn, etc. I am sure is has been deactivated, but is still linked to the previous account. Meaning that it is just plain useless.

can you use the Infuse on Straight Talk? If so, how?
Yeah i am using my infuse on straight talk.
Buy a Nokia e71 or the other exspensive Nokia. You may also be able to buy the new android phone offered by straight talk.
Buy a 45 dollar month long plan card.
Activate the phone you buy.
Place the sim card in your infuse and it will work right away for calls with no unlocking needed.
Search for android straight talk APN settings and input them into your phone.
Viola.

You don't even have to unlock the phone if it was AT&T to begin with.
Buy the Nokia e71, activate it and port your number. Take the SIM out of the nokia, put it in the Infuse. Connect to wifi and download "APN Backup & Restore" from the market.
Download this file, unzip it, and put the xml file in /sdcard/APNBackupRestore

Somewhat off topic but will this work for the Inspire as well?

Yes, pretty much any android phone that takes sims, except for this...
It's best to get an At&t phone if you want the fastest data. If you have a t-mobile phone, it will work (if unlocked), but you won't get 4 or even 3g. Other phones from around the world would probably work, no guarantees though.
A few comments - while I don't have direct personal experience with this, this is what I believe is the case from a few conversations on IRC:
1) You must buy one of the $200 Nokias. All of ST's other phones come with SIMs that are somehow locked to the phone they were sold with. (Kind of the counterpart to a locked phone - these are locked SIMs!)
2) After activating with the Nokia, you must keep the device. If you sell it and someone else activates service with it, your service will be shut off.

Throttle Fix 100% works every phone

Okay this requires you to have another IMEI number so if you have a Infuse you will need either a iPhone a BlackBerry or a LTE phone's IMEI number
Call AT&T tell them you need to update your IMEI # and update the Unlimited Data plan to the Unlimited Data plan for that phone. I used a Skyrocket IMEI for NY Infuse they took a few minutes updating it and once I got off the phone I went into Airplane mode and out of Airplane mode and had full speeds again.
Everytime you are throttled call back give them the old IMEI # and have them update the Data Plan again for full speeds!
No need to change your APN!
Hit Thanks if this helps you!
Sent from my SGH-I997 using XDA App
This is a SERIOUS security concern that the govt. doesn't deal with easy. IMEI numbers are used to track phones, esp when they want to point in on law breakers.
I would NOT suggest anyone doing this.
One reprieve is that you are not physically changing the IMEI of your device. But I am still unsure of how ethical this is.
Edit: Also, if I am not wrong, IMEI number is transmitted every time you place or receive a call.
Yes but if you own the phone
Sent from my SGH-I997 using XDA App
i told you all they slow you down by the device!
i was slowed down on my infuse, then i got my blackberry and my speeds where back to normal!
i guess i'll start carrying another device. root it and then just use tether hotspot when i get throttled.
I tried putting my sim into my buddies g-note and I was still throttled!

Yeah. And then you will get the email telling you to stop tethering and then if you don't you will be pushed through to the tethering plan.
Optimus, I think that bbs are different. There plans are weird. For instance, you can tether to a playbook and whatnot.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using Tapatalk
Just change IMEI's to another device of yours that has a different data plan as long as its a smart phone it'll fix it
Sent from my SGH-I997 using XDA App
The other issue to think about is that there are different data plans, even for the same level. For example, there is a $30 3GB smartphone 3G plan, $30 3GB iPhone plan, $30 3GB iPhone 4S plan, $30 3GB smartphone 4G plan, etc. They may all seem the same to you, but when your bill comes you could end up with pro-rated charges for each one.

Simple answer: Use the phone data plan as a phone data plan, and not as replacement to home internet.
Whatever you do, you'll get caught one way or other. And changing IMEI's can have really bad consequences, even if you own the other device. Just saying.

One reprieve is that you are not physically changing the IMEI of your device. But I am still unsure of how ethical this is.
Edit: Also, if I am not wrong, IMEI number is transmitted every time you place or receive a call.

Nothing illegal about switching your SIM to another phone and having AT&T update their database with the correct data plan. The government couldn't care less about this since you're not cloning or changing the IMEI of the phones.
Thank you, this was just away I got my internet back to working condition after I used 2.3 GB's of Data...

Simple answer: Use the phone data plan as a phone data plan, and not as replacement to home internet.
Whatever you do, you'll get caught one way or other. And changing IMEI's can have really bad consequences, even if you own the other device. Just saying.

So you work for a phone store? Hmm.. Do you have the phone that ATT (I asdumr) gives you. And that's hilarious. Tell him to put a fan over it, turn it sideways and take the battery cover off. It cools it down real fast. I had to take the battery cover off after watching an or so of the Mentlist.. . On my phone. Not tethering.

lol i only tether (Only to my Ps3) when my home internet which we paid about $60 a month (Xfinity Comcast) for isn't working.

Verizon's new WiFi policy?

My coworker was informing me yesterday that Verizon is soon going to make changes when you upgrade your phone contract.
The big change he pointed out was that you will have to specify a WiFi network and then any WiFi network you connect to that is not the one specified will be counted as data.
Has anyone else heard of this? He didn't give me a source and I can see big red doing something like this.
I am not sure how credible my coworker is since I can't find any info about it.

That sounds pretty nonsensical.

BS! They can't charge you for data that they aren't providing.

They can't do that, they have no idea what Wi-Fi networks you connect to. It would be impossibe.

Even though Verizon is hungry and eager to maximize their profits, it is not logistically and technically possible to do this.
Find a new job as you work with some dummies.
Thank me later.
I agree that its very unlikely but you have to think about it from the technological side, they already monitor everything we do even if we are on our own WiFi connection. Its completely possible technologically speaking, with all the random spyware they add to our phones and all the bull**** monitoring what we do with our phones so they can make more money on us by selling said information to a 3rd party, I can honestly see the greedy bastards trying to do this. Them getting away with it on the other hand is highly unlikely, I'm pretty sure there is something illegal about this, but even if there is it wouldn't be the first time they paid lobbyists to go bribe/help them understand why this should be allowed under the law.
I'm not saying this will happen, but honestly the way VZW and AT&T have been getting worse and worse lately nothing would surprise me.
I remember when I first got a MiFi, I can't remember what they called MiFi's when they first came out years ago, that they advertised you could use your MiFi account info to sign on to their WiFi hotspots and use them. Well what they didn't tell you, and this could have just been regional, was that when you signed on they charged you for using it, and then a year or so later they said you could be charged or it could count against your monthly MiFi allowance. It didn't last for very long but they did try that, and it seems similar to what the OP said.
I really just think your friend was full of it, but anything is a possibility with VZW, AT&T, or T-Mobile. There is always a catch, like with T-Mobiles unlimited plan. You get 100MB of 4G speeds but anything over 100MB and you get dropped to 2G speeds. I was considering switching to T-Mobile until I saw that.
I am hoping that Google and Dish don't get blocked by VZW, AT&T, and T-Mobile. I will switch to Googles cell service as soon as they launch it in my area, even if I can't get service at my house, just to get the hell away from VZW.
