Bloatware issues w/LG Motion - General Questions and Answers

(Thanks to this forum) I successfully rooted my new LG Motion. However once I deleted the bloatware via ROM Toolbox Pro and rebooted; my phone said something along the lines of security violation under the LG logo and would not boot.. I fixed that problem and it's back to working and rooted again, however I still have bloatware bogging me down.
All I want to delete are the metro pcs useless apps and some extra Google crap like Google play books, movies, music, etc... Can I freeze these apps without making my cell a paperweight? Or can I delete them another way? The a ton...
–Rob

I think most of the google apps are important. But should be fine with removing carrier apps.
Sent from my USCC-US760 using xda app-developers app

Thanks but I am paranoid now... I use my Motion for work too, so I can't risk deleting carrier apps until someone is absolutely positive.. It's a pain in the *app and takes to long to fix it if it bugs out, again, ya know?
Yet at the same time I don't want all that crap on my phone...

Has anyone with an lg motion successfully deleted the bloatware?

Ok great. Now is there a "full-functioning" rom for the LG Motion? I've Googled it & only found one, which had not been able to use the text messaging. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I can't remember exactly anymore; however, besides the backup and sync apps you listed most of those I can confirm removing and being OK. I didn't remove things I did not know what they did, at least I thought--that's a whole different story with gtalk. Removing gtalk anymore doesn't seem to be so detrimental as it used to be back in the 1.6 days of android; it was, however, super hard to find the apk to reinstall which i found here. I reinstalled gtalk because I wanted to be able to easily chat with my daughter, that is the only reason I found I wanted to install it for.
Sitting on ~100megs internal storage atm with 74aps. I really think a custom rom and partion could get me more open space. Oh, and I only froze the wifi voice calling app. My home wifi isn't a strong enough signal to support it all the time--cheap router I suppose--but I never know when I may get a new router in the future that would support a good enough signal for it. Being that the app is frozen--meaning that it is semi-uninstalled--system still operates stably.

Titanium backup, it's in the app store. I do believe you need to be rooted though to uninstall those apps as well.

Just hook your phone up with the drivers already installed and in usb debug mode from the menu... >menu > settings > applications > Development > usb debug mode. then just run the program and click "root" and it will take care of it for you
How do I add some of the bloatware apps back on to my device? Tried adb pouch from android commander and says I'm not rooted but I am after I checked with "root checker" any advice?
Adding the bloat back depends on how your removed it...TB can create a backup then remove it for you, you can us adb to remove it, but then you'll need to download the .apk files for the bloat you want to add it back in.
I believe the bloat is available for download in the development section.
Well, I searched around a bit, but the thread that it was one got closed...stuff got deleted...etc. Perhaps a bit more search, or someone can repost the bloat.zip.
ugh i messed up and deleted some live wall papers now it wont let me use live wall papers, how do i fix this? yo root the phone and flash it with K1c again if you are using that rom
I have rooted my phone and began to remove bloatware with titanium pro. I have removed some of the apps I have seen listed by other but I think I have a problem here. The sync icon just keep showing. I dont think I did anything else besides uninstalling and deleted the backup for some apps I never use and was sure they wouldnt cause problem. Please help. Thanks!

Another noob question...What is the difference between freezing an app and uninstalling one? I mean, it's a bit obvious, but also a bit vague...
My first few questions are rather broad/major... What's the different between a "package" and a ".APK" based on the spreadsheet being linked? Does freezing keep the process from restarting upon rebooting the phone??
Do I want to freeze apps that I want to keep for possible future use? Uninstall is for anything I want to get rid of completely and never plan to use, correct? I likely know the answers to these...But I also read that freezing an app is better and frees up more system resources than uninstalling....how can that be true? I assume uninstalling an app also "freezes" it, AKA stops it from processing...Correct?
So apps I might want in the future, like clock widgets, I just want to freeze, correct? Same for calender, calculator, etc?
On the other hand, I was to uninstall items like VZW Navigator, correct?
Sorry for redundent questions but I'm just making sure I do everything right.

From what I understand, freezing essentially deactivates the app. As long as the app is frozen, it should not start, regardless if your phone reboots. If you freeze the app, it will still be there, just not working where as uninstalling it will completely remove the app. If you are not sure if you want it, just freeze it.
Freeze disables it and leaves it in the rom and usually hides from app drawer. Uninstall deletes it from rom making rom footprint smaller but saves it in TIBU backup folder. Defrost re-enables app in rom. Uninstalled apps can be reinstalled from TIBU. Bottom line frozen app is still in rom thus not actually debloated just disabled. Uninstalled is removed from rom but saved by TIBU thus debloated.

I know this is an old thread, but does anyone have an updated list for TW 4.3?
I have this link
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AqTvctlW89DtdC1qVUlLeVFTV3ZOdUtDclpBdVRQOUE&pli=1#gid=0

Anyone have a current list?

[Q] Disable OTA updates possible?

I am trying and getting absolutely nowhere disabling the OTA update nag screen. Even though my phone is rooted I can not disable the OTA update service nor rename the otacerts.zip file (as it still says access is denied.)
Motorola is refusing to help me aswell.
Surely there is a way of doing this?
Any help would be much appriciated.
I disabled the OTA and a whole bunch of other services using Greenify. There is a thread in this forum, with a comprehensive list of services that can be disabled (far more than I disabled). I also disabled some apps from multi tasking. I typically get 3 days of moderate usage. So its a win win situation.
Can u tell me the apps that i can disable to save battery life.

I understand to do this I have to install the xposed framework? Something that does worry me after seeing the dreaded boot loop recently.
I am under the impression from some thread in here, renaming otacerts.zip in the system folder to otacerts.bak can disable the function, but likewise I am a bit worried about bricking my phone. Motorola have informed me that updates are mandatory now and they will not tell me how to disable OTA updates.
The lack of working apps for things like this is also putting me off playing around too.

I got rid of the nag screen by disabling an app called "motorolaOTA" and erasing the cache in recovery to delete the OTA file. I really wouldn't recommend upgrading to 4.4.4 as I eventually did anyway about a week after disabling the nag screen (wanted to test it out lol) and in the process hard bricked my phone.
So, disable "motorolaOTA" and whatever you do DO NOT upgrade!

Sorry, I dont have access to the phone right now so cannot list the services. But I think I fed some miss-information, I now realize that I used Titanium backup to freeze the unwanted apps. This being all Motorola services. I then used Greenify on my messaging apps, like Facebook, Whatsapp and others.
But I do agree with another comment in this thread that rooting does mess up the upgrade process, it becomes a real pain! So its worth considering to not do it. Like others I have not upgraded to 4.4.4

This helped me with the upgrade (Phone is unlocked, rooted and had xposed modules on it before the upgrade)
For me to succesfully update the OTA i had to do follow the steps in the OP of this Post. I tried a lot of flashing, but in the end only this worked:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g/general/ota-file-indian-dual-sim-4-4-4-t2810166
Just follow the steps below the text:
REVERT TO STOCK WITHOUT LOSING DATA OR ANYTHING ELSE
After this, you have to root it again with superboot. It's worth the effort to have 4.4.4. The phone feels more responsive for me.
Problem Solved!
I installed "System app remover (ROOT) by Jumobile". Its a free app in the google play store. This allowed me to uninstall Motorola OTA service.
The upgrade nag screen has yet to re-appear, and my phone is otherwise functioning perfectly.
Well done! I had never heard of this app, it looks neat. I use Titanium primarily for backups, the ability to freeze apps is just a nice bonus. I wonder if Titanium and "System app remover" work using the same method? With Titanium its easy to restore a frozen app. I read that "System app remover" puts removed apps in the recycle bin. I'm wondering what the chances are of this storage getting erased by accident, making it harder to restore?

Root Without Unlocking Bootloader

Hello All
How long does it usually take for root Without Unlocking the Bootloader to come out?
This is the only reason I have not purchased this phone yet.
So frustrated there will be no decent normal sized Nexus 6 and the Z3 loses camera features when unlocked ?
No ETA pls
Let's wait

There is no "usual" number. Some phones got root before they were even out officially. Some took a few days. Some took over a month. And some end up retired without a safe root option.
First rule of xda: don't ask for eta
I know that. Just another frustration with android. We need more Nexus phones!

Never thought of using adblockers like AdAway, preventing a total waste of mobile data for loading unwanted ads which easily consume ten times the data needed ?
Never thought of kicking out bloatware also wasting your ressources ?
Would love to see root but for now I can manage quite fine without it... There is less bloatware then with certain other brands and you can uninstall or disable quite a bit.
The few things I WOULD like:
* Completely remove unused system apps
* Change LCD Density (it's all soooo big now)
* Full SDCard read/write access for all apps. (I love quickpic as a gallery, but because I save my pics/vids to sdcard it can not remove anything now)
* Titanium backup. Have never ever had issues with this (only user apps+data for me most of the time) and that's with switching between different roms, brands, aosp/stock, etc... Never failed me

ABP (please call it "Adblock Plus" so every readers knows what's meant) does not require root, but it's not too capable running under Android. It does a brilliant job with FireFox and Windows, but the Android implementation only captures a fracture of annoying ads. And: No plugin for defining your own black lists under Android.
AdAway additionally removes annoying ads from a wealth of apps. Just doesn't work without root.
Ok, I can hear you: "If everybody uses that means, app developers won't get paid."
Yes, that's correct.
But:
a) If I really like an app, I'll buy it. Example: Poweramp. NO ads, no annoyance. It just stops working after some time. I regard that as ok. I do NOT like apps getting on my nerves all the time.
My formula is simple: Annoying ads = deinstall, no purchase.
b) A majority of free app developers uses that "evil" ads, appearing at places previously occupied by regular buttons - so you tap on them although you just don't want to.
If that bad behavior gets to a stop, I'll think about disabling AdAway again. Fair play - but on BOTH sides.

Lag problems

So I recently rooted my LS996 in an attempt to remove bloatware and try and improve performance but it seems like it's doing even worse now? Any ideas on how I can fix this? I can't even run Google Maps and Google Play Music at the same time without one or the other closing out. I can't seem to improve performance using any method. I'm running 5.1.1 zv8

If you upgraded all the way from 5.0.1 ZV5 to ZV8 without doing a hard reset before rooting this might be your problem.
Something similar happened to me and then what I did was with each update I hard reset my device to have a clean install of the update.
Im on ZV8 rooted and I got no lag, just removed Gapps like playbooks newstand movies and the non crucial apps.
If you wish to disable apps use TITANIUM, never disable them or uninstall them directly from root browser or whatever.
That could result on a bootloop or a no boot of the OS.
Good luck :good:
