Android TV box / stick
Android TV stick (look like a bigger size of USB stick with HDMI on one end), it came with Android o/s installed (latest is JB 4.2.1, dual core cpu and quadcore GPU with full 1080 60fps). Plug this in your flat screen, now you have android O/S on TV, likes your TV is now a huge tablet. The nice thing here is you can stream your tf700 screen to your TV so like you have a bigger screen but control by your tf700. So now you have 2 tablets, one is your tf700 and one is your TV. Nice!
Thanks guys, I'm going to check out all of these apps with the exception of the NHL...not a huge fan of hockey but thanks anyway!

If you're a root user, I'd say: Greenify (for keeping Maps' battery consumption under control) or Orange Backup. I know they aren't the most exciting apps, but they are useful.
As for other apps, it kind of depends. I like apps that help me take notes easily: therefore I love Google Keep, Supernote and Jotterpad.
I also love PushBullet, to quickly send images, links etc to my tablet or phone from my desktop.
For news reading, I generally stick to Currents, AppyGeek (for tech news) and a local news paper app
But you will have to be somewhat more specific if you want to get useful recommendations from us
I don't have an overal favourite app... Just fav apps for every type.
Moon+ for ebooks, Perfectviewer for comics&magazines, Firefox for browsing, Mxplayer for video, quickpic for gallery, Splashtop THD to use my laptop, Officesuite as documenteditor, CameraFV5 and Shotcontrol (thank you to Thats OK for that one) as camera, Snapseed as photoeditor, Autodesk Sketchbook & Photoshop Touch for painting, IMDB for filmfacts, Multi Copypaste for copying/pasting a lot of stuff, Hackers keyboard for keyboard (140wpm, don't need suggestive typing, thanks), TuneIn for online radio, and Tapatalk for forums (duh).
@adelancker Or you just uninstall Gmaps altogether. I use Navfree for navigation, and the browser version of Gmaps for satview. Being on a border, Google Maps is a nightmare.
That's a nice weather widget. What is it?

Stream wirelessly to your none smartTV. With the Android HDMI TV stick (slighly bigger than the regular usb stick), plugs directly to your hdmi port and turn your TV into SmartTV. You can run Android on your TV, just like a big tablet or you can stream anything from your tf700 wirelessly to your TV (using your TV as the big screen), the difference is if using your TV as tablet you need a wired mouse/bluetooth mouse since it's none touch screen, or you can use your tf700 where you have full control. I brought a bluetooth mouse and keyboard combo so I can just jump on the tv and use it as I'm on my tf700.
What items do you need to stream wireless from your infinity to your tv?

You can search on Amazon or Google for this "USB android tv box" It made in a USB or a box (like Roku), I preferred USB cause it easy to move around, just plug this into your HDMI TV input and now your TV is running Android 4.1 or 4.2 (depend on what you buy). Since your TV is none touch screen you need to buy a bluetooth keyboard/mouse combo. I suggest you get at least a dual core (they do have quadcore too) CPU with quad core GPU and 1gb ram version. Now you can use your TV as your tf700 or you can stream anything from your tf700 to your TV and use your tf700 as the controller. You just turn your TV into a smart TV and a huge tablet.:good:

1) The TV box is an Android device by itself (dual core cpu, quadcore gpu), same Android O/S as your tf700, so you don't need your tablet. So your TV is a huge tablet by itself.(kind of like Roku, but here you have a full Android O/S with real web browser and all the droid apps same as the one on your tablet.)
2) Wireless streaming between your tablet and the TV, no HDMI cable required. With hdmi cable the tablet have to be next to the TV and it's a pain to control. You can just wireless send the movie from your tablet to your big TV screen or use the TV as a huge monitor instead of your tablet screen.
Those are 2 advantages.

I have htc sensation and galaxy 10.1 tab.
If I start allshare in galaxy and want the video to be shown in htc sensation,
what applicaition do I need to install?
Is sensation a server only DLNA device? so it can only provide media to others.
Thanks.
Pretty sure its only a server.
Sent from my Sensation using Cyanogenmod
Sensation is a streaming server. You need a client, like a DLNA enabled TV (like the latest Sony Bravia LED TVs) or Windows 7/Mac OS enabled machine with streaming on to play back the videos.
You also need to be on the same network (like home or office LAN). Sensation detects all playback devices automatically and starts streaming.
It's pretty cool too, I love this feature. Gives me the option of not buying a stereo dock, I can just use my TV to playback music.
Thanks. can I make it a streaming client?
e.g.: others with sensation could just watch what is from streaming server.

Unfortunately, I haven't tried that. But how it should work - if it supports playback from other DLNA devices - is that you should be able to find your "Sensation Z710e" in the list of streaming clients in Windows Media player (for instance). I can, for e.g., find my TV in that list. Same should be true for the Sensation.
Let me get back to you on this, I'll give it a try.
But logically you should stream from a smaller screen to a larger so everyone can see what you have on your hand-held. Can't think of a scenario why you'd like to do it the other way round - cell phones are more personal .
Just a general question.
e.g. there could be a situation where 10 people with sensation and want to share a media or picture. In this case one of the sensation could be the server and others could be the clients.
I have galaxy tablet 10.1 with allshare. I could not connect sensation with tablet. Seems that they can only be the server. odd.

Don't know of any real-time collaboration features in the HTC Sensation, but would be nice though. DLNA is not the choice of protocol for this though.
Your solution would need a server maintaining lists of clients (or one of the phones could act as one) and the rest would connect and get shared content from them. Haven't seen any app on the Market that does this kinda P2P.
P.S., tried the Windows Media Player stream list, HTC Sensation wasn't listed there among the set of DLNA clients that can play the stream. Sorry, bro.
thanks. Now understand a bit more about DLNA, something so so.

I ran into an issue with this still don't quite understand it. But I was able to get it to work once on my pc. The pc had to have the media player open before ny sensation was able to find it. But now I can't get it work at all. No settings have been changed since I was able to get it work. So Idk hopefully HTC will come out with a fix. Or maybe someone can come up with a definitive answer to all these questions. DLNA on the sensation seems to be an issue for a lot of users
maybe someone can make a quick tutorial?
I would love to watch photos and movies from the sensation on my PC without cable.

Bro, you got it the other way round. What you're explaining is the Sensation being the server (since it is streaming) to the clients (which are playing back the stream).

The guy above has done it pretty nicely, though he had his client-servers mixed up. Also, the playback quality on my HD TV was outstanding, no run-time compression (come on, it's a mobile phone, who are we kiddin ) and the playback had no lags. Also, I can play it from anywhere in my home - even outside if I can get a decent enough signal on my WiFi.

It can act as a server to an Xbox 360 for instance, but the Xbox must be in Media Center Extender mode for it to work, meaning you need MCE running at the time.
Now with W7 the Xbox will log into the W7 computer as a service account and start MCE for you (once you've done the initial setup of course), not sure about Vista.

You can do the same thing from the Gallery app to allow you to stream video FROM a DLNA device (via Windows Media Player on Windows 7 PC in my case) to the Sensation.
Thanks so much for the heads-up on this. My girlfriend can do the same on a Sense 2.1 ROM I put on her Desire, but I couldn't work out how to do it on my new Sensation (now I have INXS in my head) because the 'Videos' app of old is gone. Now Santa can buy me a nice big NAS for Christmas and I can put all my film/tv shows on it and watch them in bed! Unfortunately I doubt 'santa' is reading this because she, I mean he has a life.
By the way, if it helps anyone, in Windows Media player on a Windows 7 pc, click on the 'Stream' drop-down menu on the Library page (top left of) and choose the options you want to enable. For me it's 'Allow remote control of my player...' and 'Automatically allow devices to play my media'. If your Sensation and your PC are connected to the same router, you should now be able to stream media from your phone to the PC, AND also view media from your pc on your phone : )

Hi,
I tested microHDMI cable today and connected pad to the HDTV. Works amazingly well. Surprised.
I was watching picture gallery, a HD movie and just took a quick 10 minute test.
I wonder what could be other practical things and what this could be used for:
- presentations
- music, of course
- games? how?
I have a problem with a fact that when the screen goes off - tablet is locked - movies stop playing.
This means the screen of pad must be always "on". So you basically have two screens. Not practical. Any workaround?
Same goes for games. I noticed i still have to look at the tablet to know where to press on the screen, so except when using the game controller and screen on....it is not possible to play on TV.
Am I correct? Any practical ideas? What can we use HDMI for.
My cable is also ethernet capable, which i didn't even know it exists. What about that? How to use that?
Sorry, many questions

A gamepad/controller will solve that issue. I agree that using the tablet for input and TV for displaying the output is not ideal
I've used the tablet with a micro-HDMI cable and BSPlayer with great results. It supports LAN mode (SBM/Windows file sharing), and can stream directly from RAR archives. Great for watching TV shows, etc for those of us who can't get Netflix, Hulu and so on.

This is a feature added in the HDMI 1.4 specification. It basically throws in a full duplex 100 Mbps Ethernet link alongside everything else going through the cable. It needs to be supported by both ends, and is mostly for TVs, receivers, etc. As far as I know, the TF700 does not support it, I'd be surprised if it did.
The cable is just transporting the signal, but manufacturers (and especially eBay sellers) love putting on features like that on HDMI cables. "3D support! Ethernet support! Will get you laid!" and so on
(More on HDMI 1.4, as well as version comparisons: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI#Version_1.4)
I know at least for my phone...I never really use it for anything more than playing a couple games with a controller, watching a video, or viewing photos. Maybe browsing the web, but not really. Emulators are the best, I love being able to play a little Super Smash Bros or Zelda: OoT on my TV via my phone (and tablet).

I will not be monitoring this thread, I have a T-Mobile T999 but wanted to share this with the SGS3 community at large. Feel free to post results, and any additional mods (ie. Getting it to work with ASOP Rom's) in my original thread
For some reason, beyond my comprehension, Samsung have this great app, but have yet to open it up to the SGS3. I have been resorting to downloading it and installing it on my HTC HD2 (Running CM9) backing it up with Titanium, and then copying the backup over to my SGS3, and restoring the backup. A bit round about, but works.
The App, for those that don't know, allows you, with a Samsung high-end TV or BR-Player, use the app to not only as a remote, but as a second mirrored screen, with audio. Great for trips to the kitchen, bathroom, outside, or in another room (although range is limited by your router).

[Supported Phone]
While technically only SGS2, it works with SGS3 stock rooted rom, but should work on most with a stock base. It will not work on CM9/10 and ASOP ROM's but you could give it a try and let me know.
Here is the actual app, I extracted it from my Titanium backup figuring someone could use it until Samsung get around to updating the Market to let you just download it. The only thing I can't get to work is Bluetooth power on. I can pair with my TV, but it just doesn't show up until I have turned it on. I also had an issue with it working over the the 5Ghz 802.11n band, but with 3.1.9 that doesn't seem to be an issue anymore.
Version 3.1.9 - 39MB - Confirmed Working for me with 2011 PDP51D8000 Model

If it does it with other programs, and this app works for others here, you may have other issues. Are you using a stock or stock based ROM? Do you have root? Which version did you try? What band WiFi are you using, if connecting over 802.11n?
Without more, and with the issue with the other program, I would guess something is either wrong with your phone, and you should factory reset, or you are not using a stock based ROM (Although I believe remote control should still work on CM10/ASOP ROM's just not dual view)
I am a stock, not even rooted just out of the box setup. Well i did a complete reset on the phone and it fixed it and it works now.

enable windows share on the WD and browse to it on the tablet using ES File Explorer and dump whatever files you want.
Look up double twist on play store. If you buy the full version you get air twist (stream to xbox360, ps3, apple tv, windows pc), and air sync (wirelessly sync between the 2 and sync itunes playlists). Been using it all month, i actually like it a lot.
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T
Thanks a lot guys. Appreciate it, will try out both options.
Have a try with XBMC, I'm using it with a ftp share and works very well (only some delays with full hd big size movies)
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T using xda app-developers app
Received my Nexus Player and the first thing i did was install Kodi x86 on it.
My Setup:
Synology 1812+ with 8 3TB WD Harddrives in SHR (Synology version of Raid5)
Using NFS to Share movies from NAS
Netgear R8000 running DDWRT
Using 802.11ac on Nexus Player
Pioneer AV Receiver capable of AC3. DTS, TrueHD and DTS-HD
Once kodi was installed I added my collection of movies (1300+) most of them are 1080p rips ranging from 9GB - 20GB per movie. I was extremely impressed how fast it downloaded Cover Art and thumbnail pictures for all my media, tested a couple of kodi addons like xbmctorrent, 1channel, sportsdevil, acestream setup and Genesis with everything working perfectly. Now I understand that most dont have an AC router but for those that do this thing runs really quick. For those wondering, this device is capable of audio pass through so unlike some of my other devices (Nvidia Shield Tablet, Madcatz Mojo) i actually get true surround sound. Similar to the FireTV the nexus player and player AC3 (Dolby Digital) and DTS perfectly, if you have a video that is DTS-HD it will play the DTS version and if you have a video that has a TrueHD track then it'll be stereo. The only down side of the Nexus Player was the lack of buttons on the remote, i found myself having to use XBMC Remote a couple of times during setup and configuration (lack of menu key). I can now finally get rid of my Madcatz Mojo and Ouya, i kept both of them because i feared amazon would start blocking devices that didn’t have the latest unrooted version, yes yes I know you can side load rooted versions but isn’t it nice having a device that doesnt have the bootloader locked? where you don’t have a lingering feeling that Google will on day block XBMC/Kodi like you fear with Amazon.
I grabbed the minecraft apk from the fire tv hoping i could sideload it on the Nexus Player and get Controller support but it didnt run as planned. graphics looked like they loaded half way so im guessing thats a Intel Chip issue since i've been able to side load that apk on the the nvidia shield tablet.

Nexus Player:
Pros
802.11ac
Snappy processor
Unlocked Bootloader (No cat and mouse game for bootloader/root like other companies)
Cons
1Gb of Ram (yes its half of the fire TV but i didnt notice lag in my tests)
Ethernet port (Even though FireTV only has fastethernet which is only 100mbps)
lack of buttons on the remote (this was a bit annoying during setup)
Ran some speed test using SFTP to test real world speeds.
Nexus Player (802.11ac) at 3.59MB/s
FireTv (Ethernet) at 4.18MB/s
Nexus Player with RJ45 Adapter at 3.82MB/s
FireTV Stick (802.11n 5GHZ) at 1.41MB/s
Open Hour Chameleon (Gigabit Ethernet) 7.1MB/s

The Nexus Player Controller works on the Ouya and the Ouya Controller also works on the Nexus Player.
So is the Nexus Player fast enough to open 20GB movies over NAS through WiFi? I use FireTV with Kodi right now and 10GB are not a problem but I had to raise the XBMC cache a bit - otherwise there was some buffering happening at random times.
By the way - you can use FireTV remote on the Nexus Player - but you have to pair it meaning it won't be easy to switch between FireTV and Nexus Player if you want to use both.
That's correct, I can play 20GB files easily without any drops. Nexus Player is 20 feet away from router.
I havent paired a fire remote to the nexus player but I don't see why it wouldn't work. I'll test later today but if I pair a fire remote why do I still need the nexus remote?
I received my firetv stick for prime customers the other day too, and the sticks remote is much better than the flimsy nexus remote

Adding an RJ45 FE dongle is cake. It's not built in, true, but it's easy enough.

Had a spare RJ45 FE Dongle at work Cable Matters USB 2.0 to 10/100 Fast Ethernet Adapter $11 and tested it on the Nexus Player. Speeds were a bit faster then 802.11AC by 0.3. Look the the OP for the picture.
P.s. in order to the that adapter to work i needed to boot into recovery first than it worked.

How does one raise this said cache you talk about?
If you use fusion its in the system tweaks.

How to make a good choice between the Amazon Fire TV and the Google Nexus Player? I live in Europe (not Germany / UK) so I don't know any people with the AFTV or the NP.
When I search Google for reviews (comparing both devices for example), I only find some short summary's of the devices without focus on the things I care about. What I'm missing is explanation and discription of items like HDMI-CEC functionality, handling HLS streaming apps, working with an USB-hub, installing KODI (and what video formats are supported), sideloading apps, (lack off) auto frame rate switching, installing different launchers, reviewing the controllers / remotes / available remote apps, etc, etc.
Someone who can help me with this choice?

In my opinion I would go with the Nexus Player, the FireTV has a usb but does not work, whereas the Nexus Player's usb can be enabled giving you access to a usb hub. I have this working. Not that familiar with HLS, but from a quick search seems to be an apple standard. HDMI-CEC is simply turning on the TV via the nexus player and switching to the correct HDMI input, not really a huge feature in my book, but to each their own.
Kodi can be installed, but is not ready for prime time just yet, it works but on and off, I would say its more a google os problem than a kodi problem. I believe this will get resolved. There is another thread that lists apps that can be sideloaded, its growing and will only get bigger as devs enable their apps for android tv. Not sure about autoframe rate switching, but different launchers already work with nexus player. Third party controllers and remotes work with the nexus player.
I think one area you should consider is the the nexus player is already rooted and the FireTV is closed, this makes the nexus player a lot more flexible for future hacks and development. Another area is the performance, the nexus player is a better performing device. Your use case would be the determining factor, in mine I was looking for an open low cost htpc and the nexus player delivers on that.
can you run some synthetic benchmarks like 3dmark or Antutu?

Thanks for your reaction I think you've giving a lot of useful information and I don't understand why reviewers don't That's my main point.

I've heard about a user with an unrooted AFTV which made an usb-hub working. Managed to connect several usb devices like a keyboard / mouse / controller. Ethernet of course isn't necessary at the AFTV. And yes, usb hdd's won't work without root but I don't need it because I've a Synology NAS.

Yes, it might be an Apple standard but that's not the case in the Netherlands I suppose. We're using a lot of (Android) apps for watching TV or to watch some missed programs. Those apps request HLS support.

Is it possible to control the Nexus Player with the TV remote (main point for using the device within my family)? Move up-down-right-left, play, pause, stop, back, etc?

Nice to know. I think there's no difference between the AFTV and the NP at this point.

You're completely right about rooting, but I'm not very familiar with it so I don't know if I would root my device any way. Performance wise? I don't know why the NP performs better? I think they're roughly comparable.

I'm looking for a low cost htpc with capability to use XBMC, Netflix, Youtube, Spotify and several specific Dutch apps. So basically I think both devices will deliver on that, but I can't make up the exactly correct balance.
Which of these players (or other Android sticks/boxes) can do DD 5.1 audio in the Netflix app?
What about bitstreaming HD audio formats (DTS-HD, Dolby TrueHD) to an AVR?
