FireTV vs Nexus Player vs Ouya vs Mojo - Nexus Player General

Received my Nexus Player and the first thing i did was install Kodi x86 on it.
My Setup:
Synology 1812+ with 8 3TB WD Harddrives in SHR (Synology version of Raid5)
Using NFS to Share movies from NAS
Netgear R8000 running DDWRT
Using 802.11ac on Nexus Player
Pioneer AV Receiver capable of AC3. DTS, TrueHD and DTS-HD
Once kodi was installed I added my collection of movies (1300+) most of them are 1080p rips ranging from 9GB - 20GB per movie. I was extremely impressed how fast it downloaded Cover Art and thumbnail pictures for all my media, tested a couple of kodi addons like xbmctorrent, 1channel, sportsdevil, acestream setup and Genesis with everything working perfectly. Now I understand that most dont have an AC router but for those that do this thing runs really quick. For those wondering, this device is capable of audio pass through so unlike some of my other devices (Nvidia Shield Tablet, Madcatz Mojo) i actually get true surround sound. Similar to the FireTV the nexus player and player AC3 (Dolby Digital) and DTS perfectly, if you have a video that is DTS-HD it will play the DTS version and if you have a video that has a TrueHD track then it'll be stereo. The only down side of the Nexus Player was the lack of buttons on the remote, i found myself having to use XBMC Remote a couple of times during setup and configuration (lack of menu key). I can now finally get rid of my Madcatz Mojo and Ouya, i kept both of them because i feared amazon would start blocking devices that didn’t have the latest unrooted version, yes yes I know you can side load rooted versions but isn’t it nice having a device that doesnt have the bootloader locked? where you don’t have a lingering feeling that Google will on day block XBMC/Kodi like you fear with Amazon.
I grabbed the minecraft apk from the fire tv hoping i could sideload it on the Nexus Player and get Controller support but it didnt run as planned. graphics looked like they loaded half way so im guessing thats a Intel Chip issue since i've been able to side load that apk on the the nvidia shield tablet.

Nexus Player:
Pros
802.11ac
Snappy processor
Unlocked Bootloader (No cat and mouse game for bootloader/root like other companies)
Cons
1Gb of Ram (yes its half of the fire TV but i didnt notice lag in my tests)
Ethernet port (Even though FireTV only has fastethernet which is only 100mbps)
lack of buttons on the remote (this was a bit annoying during setup)
Ran some speed test using SFTP to test real world speeds.

The Nexus Player Controller works on the Ouya and the Ouya Controller also works on the Nexus Player.

So is the Nexus Player fast enough to open 20GB movies over NAS through WiFi? I use FireTV with Kodi right now and 10GB are not a problem but I had to raise the XBMC cache a bit - otherwise there was some buffering happening at random times.
By the way - you can use FireTV remote on the Nexus Player - but you have to pair it meaning it won't be easy to switch between FireTV and Nexus Player if you want to use both.

That's correct, I can play 20GB files easily without any drops. Nexus Player is 20 feet away from router.
I havent paired a fire remote to the nexus player but I don't see why it wouldn't work. I'll test later today but if I pair a fire remote why do I still need the nexus remote?

I received my firetv stick for prime customers the other day too, and the sticks remote is much better than the flimsy nexus remote

Adding an RJ45 FE dongle is cake. It's not built in, true, but it's easy enough.

Had a spare RJ45 FE Dongle at work Cable Matters USB 2.0 to 10/100 Fast Ethernet Adapter $11 and tested it on the Nexus Player. Speeds were a bit faster then 802.11AC by 0.3. Look the the OP for the picture.
P.s. in order to the that adapter to work i needed to boot into recovery first than it worked.

How does one raise this said cache you talk about?

If you use fusion its in the system tweaks.

How to make a good choice between the Amazon Fire TV and the Google Nexus Player? I live in Europe (not Germany / UK) so I don't know any people with the AFTV or the NP.
When I search Google for reviews (comparing both devices for example), I only find some short summary's of the devices without focus on the things I care about. What I'm missing is explanation and discription of items like HDMI-CEC functionality, handling HLS streaming apps, working with an USB-hub, installing KODI (and what video formats are supported), sideloading apps, (lack off) auto frame rate switching, installing different launchers, reviewing the controllers / remotes / available remote apps, etc, etc.
Someone who can help me with this choice?

In my opinion I would go with the Nexus Player, the FireTV has a usb but does not work, whereas the Nexus Player's usb can be enabled giving you access to a usb hub. I have this working. Not that familiar with HLS, but from a quick search seems to be an apple standard. HDMI-CEC is simply turning on the TV via the nexus player and switching to the correct HDMI input, not really a huge feature in my book, but to each their own.
Kodi can be installed, but is not ready for prime time just yet, it works but on and off, I would say its more a google os problem than a kodi problem. I believe this will get resolved. There is another thread that lists apps that can be sideloaded, its growing and will only get bigger as devs enable their apps for android tv. Not sure about autoframe rate switching, but different launchers already work with nexus player. Third party controllers and remotes work with the nexus player.
I think one area you should consider is the the nexus player is already rooted and the FireTV is closed, this makes the nexus player a lot more flexible for future hacks and development. Another area is the performance, the nexus player is a better performing device. Your use case would be the determining factor, in mine I was looking for an open low cost htpc and the nexus player delivers on that.

I've heard about a user with an unrooted AFTV which made an usb-hub working. Managed to connect several usb devices like a keyboard / mouse / controller. Ethernet of course isn't necessary at the AFTV. And yes, usb hdd's won't work without root but I don't need it because I've a Synology NAS.

Yes, it might be an Apple standard but that's not the case in the Netherlands I suppose. We're using a lot of (Android) apps for watching TV or to watch some missed programs. Those apps request HLS support.

You're completely right about rooting, but I'm not very familiar with it so I don't know if I would root my device any way. Performance wise? I don't know why the NP performs better? I think they're roughly comparable.

I'm looking for a low cost htpc with capability to use XBMC, Netflix, Youtube, Spotify and several specific Dutch apps. So basically I think both devices will deliver on that, but I can't make up the exactly correct balance.

Which of these players (or other Android sticks/boxes) can do DD 5.1 audio in the Netflix app?
What about bitstreaming HD audio formats (DTS-HD, Dolby TrueHD) to an AVR?

Great app idea. I can't wait to try this out later.
+1, Will give it A whirl.
Cheers.
Nice! Finally airplay for android!
Next up, facetime!
Just tested it and I have to say, it fits the bill perfectly. I did notice the music quality was on the low-end, maybe have th ability to switch between different streaming qualities?
Also I think you mean AppleAirPort express, not extreme. The extreme is the actual, dual-band router, where the express is the wi-fi extender with audio out.
Nonetheless, consider me hooked, any ideas on pricing yet?

Audio quality should be as good as the source, as AirPlay sends a lossless stream. What happens for example if you compare the same track played locally on your device vs streamed by AirPlay (with comparable volume) ?
On my Samsung SGS , quality is as good as it gets.
If you hear a difference, can you describe it ?

Very impressed, What a great start! Will be supporting you for sure. Thanks and keep it up.
What about adding video support (aka making it a full airplay client) as you can now stream video from macs and do the reverse (with some hackery... It is xda dev afterall...!)
This looks quite interesting, looking forward to giving it a whirl...

hey there.. the app sounds great.. but i have no idea how to set it up.. ive never used airplay or had an iphone (not more than a month atleast) so could you please tell me what im supposed to do in itunes?
Just wondering how this thing works. I thought you needed some BridgeCo chip on the device to support airplay. Whatever, this is an awesome app.
so with this i can't stream music from my phone to a AirPort Express or have i got it all wrong?

Thats what im looking for, too. Would pay like 5-10€ for an app that makes streaming to airport possible.
I've added a link to a youtube video in first post that shows app appearing in itunes for streaming to the phone.
@Hampa_D: the app does the opposite. To stream audio from your phone to Airplay devices you can use Twonky Mobile.
Since Twonky Mobile is an Airplay client, it will see and stream audio to AirBubble as well.
Great!!!
I will give it a try at home. Hook my mobile to the amp and stream music from my Itunes Lib

[Q] DLNA Success?

Anyone had any luck with media sharing via DLNA?
Running the Connected Media App I've not had any success with a PS3 or Google TV (Logitech). I did have some success with a 3rd party app, but the pictures were down-sampled when viewed on the TV (thumbnail res nearly).
In terms of the network, my girlfriend received the Galaxy S2 today, and its AllShare app worked fine with the PS3 (the phone appeared on the PS3 as soon as AllShare was started), although as usual it didn't like the phone's videos being 3GP. (After spending some decent time with the S2 I can't say I prefer one over the other, but I'm seriously looking forward to when I can root this Sensation to uninstall the myriad crapware, plus the S2 allowed uninstallation of Vodafone's apps out of the box, weird).
So I wondered if anyone else has had any success sharing photos or videos to DLNA compatible devices?
My TV is DLNA compatible, although I'm not 100% sure if what I did is DLNA as I don't know all that much about the protocol, so forgive me if I'm wrong.
My TV is connected to my router via an ethernet cable and my Sensation, wirelessly.
With my TV on, I went into gallery, hit menu, select player, it searched and found my TV, I picked it, and then the TV started showing pics in 1080p, was pretty neat.
Even music streaming worked to the TV. I have also successfully got the phone to stream over bluetooth to my cars ICE, with the same method.
I was not able to do any of this with my Galaxy S.
is it possible to dlna to ps3 ???
i thought it doesnt work ??
could you select media from ps3 itself to be shown on tv or did you clicked a file on the phone on galaxy s2 and after that it was shown on tv ???
@alex Good to know, I think my DLNA devices (Google TV and PS3) are a bit too simple, they don't support streaming content to them (like with Apple's AirPlay), but only let you browse the phone's content. It's just weird that the phone wasn't showing up with the Connected Media app running...
Anyway I used DoubleTwist's AirTwist feature and the phone now shows up, I can view photos in full-res, play music, but not video due to the codec used, so that's pretty strange again but at least I have a 3rd party solution.
@B-Man I think so yes, but like Alex I'm not sure how much of this is pure DLNA standard protocols, and how much is proprietary or reverse engineered (like with DoubleTwist's AirPlay support).

Yes DoubleTwist is my media player app. AirTwist is a built in feature to enable media streaming across devices.
Another cool feature is AirSync (paid plugin) lets you sync your music, podcasts and playlists with PC/Mac over WIFI.

Once I get mine, I'll have an interesting test.
I have several 3D streams from various sources in 1080i, 1080p and 720p, SbS and TaB (Side by Side, Top and Bottom) and several DLNA enabled, 3D TVs at work. Will be interesting to see what happens when I playback one of those 3D streams over DLNA to a 3D TV. Will have to see if I can find out how many of them support 3D source over DLNA.
Not obsessed with 3D or anything. Have been working with it since Aug of '09 about 50% of the time at work. Have a US$500k lab setup. Love the source clips I get. 16GB for a two min clip. 8 for left eye and 8 for right eye. 1920x1080 @ 23.97 4:2:2 eats hard disks for lunch.
Just out of curiosity, how is 3D doing in the UK? TV manufacturers here did not get the sales they expected for 3D TV in '10.

Looks like there might be a 720p limit on DLNA streaming. Not sure if it's a Sensation limit or DG H100.
I have had success streaming music, photos, and HD video to my Western Digital Live Hub using the connected media application..
I am quite impressed with the quality... Pics come up slow, however video was very good looking...

It's taking a similar path to HD, actually slower IMHO. No-one is really going out of their way to get one yet. Two reasons I can think of:
1. The major 3D TV provider, Sky, charges a lot of money for their packages but has very little 3D content (they already charge £10/mo extra for HD versions of 3 non-FTA channels). PS3 3D gaming is pretty niche.
2. There was a huge push to buy new large HD TVs with the World Cup 2010, literally everyone I know was upgrading their old sets (at this time 3D TVs were still in the early adopter price range). That surely puts a dampner on sales for a while after.
Everyone knows it'll be standard in sets soon, and without loads of compelling content, and still having to wear expensive glasses, there's just not much of a push yet.
I didn't know this existed until I was playing with the music app and noticed the device selection part.
I clicked, and there was XBMC running on my HTPC! And it worked!
I can stream audio and view photos on my new 55in Sony Bravia. Video is in the wrong format - .3gp isn't supported. I tried Twonky for Android and it's only capable of the same photos and audio. I may try to set up a Twonky server and serve the video from the Sensation to Twonky and then use Twonky's transcoding to view it directly on the TV.

XBMC had no issues with video either.
I work for T-mobile and attended the launch event in houston and HTC said that DLNA was still being fine tuned for the sensation, don't know if this helps.

My only problem with xbmc is that it supposedly doesn't play nice with Sony dlna.

Thanks. If they added hd video format options that included mpeg2 or something other than 3gp it would be nice. The connected media app works well.

I am also unable to get any media to stream to my google TV, VERY disappointing unless I'm doing something wrong.

You could use Twonky's android app.

Stream all audio overairplay?

Looking for an app that will stream all system audio over airplay (example would be airport express).
An example of why this would be really great would be for Apps like Rdio and Spotify. By having an application agnostic way to stream it would work for numerous apps. I know there are players out in the market that do play to airplay speakers, however the audio has to come from them (IE would not work streaming based applications).
Anyone have any thoughts or know of any apps that could do this?

I would think not. I honestly don't know what's so good about airplay. I have bluetooth and my ipod touch can play music to that with no problem!
Anyway, you probably could find a way to do it however, since it isn't cooked into the OS, you probably don't have a hope.
Oh, and Air Play doesn't work with every ipod touch app either, unless you know a very special trick (and perhapse a jailbreak).
I am sorry about this.
Try Doubletwist.
What i like about airplay is the integration into my home theater system. My home theater has numerous available sources and 3x sets of speakers for different sections of the house. This allows me to play what i want where i want it.
If I could get some sort of bluetooth device that has a range of 150 feet (as i can be on the deck or anywhere in the house) then that works. Any suggestions?
I thinks its a very low likelihood that anything exists now.
The base parts are there: the bluetooth audio redirects system audio, and other apps stream to airplay. So its a matter of combining them.
aibo: I was under the impression that doubletwist will play to airplay only if the audio plays through it. IE music local to the device. If doubletwist would allolw music played from the rdio or spotify app that would be what i want.
also very interested in this. looking for an app that can play ALL phone audio over airplay.
yes, bluetooth is great, but has the distinct disadvantage of shorter range than wifi (used by airplay).
anyone know of anything?
DLNA
Your stereo probably has DLNA support, so you could try finding an app for that. DLNA is almost identical to AirPlay. I don't know why Apple made their own system instead of just implementing DLNA.

DLNA poses the same problem. There is no method of pushing *all* sound through DLNA only sound from the DLNA enabled apps. I too would love *some* systemwide method of streaming other than bluetooth, but I have yet to find one. One that does audio and video would be perfect. The HDMI cable works great, but I have broken 1 cable and 1 adapter because the point where the mini HDMI goes into the wire/adapter is the weak point in the event of cable flex.
As to the question of why Apple made a new system it is pretty simple. Apple gets a royalty from every iDock device sold as it is their patent, the same holds true for airplay, they get a royalty for every airplay device sold. They feel they have the market share to force users to purchase these devices. And let's face it, for whatever reason the Android manufacturers missed the boat on this one. If Android had established a standard A/V port on every device we too would have a mutitude of docks to connect our devices to, but it never happened. That is the one and only thing I wish we had from the Apple world.

I totally agree. Wouldn't it be nice if we could stream all our audio to wireless (airplay) docks....

MP3's is no problem at all, but Radio, Podcasts or games would even be better

Micro HDMI practical usage

Hi,
I tested microHDMI cable today and connected pad to the HDTV. Works amazingly well. Surprised.
I was watching picture gallery, a HD movie and just took a quick 10 minute test.
I wonder what could be other practical things and what this could be used for:
- presentations
- music, of course
- games? how?
I have a problem with a fact that when the screen goes off - tablet is locked - movies stop playing.
This means the screen of pad must be always "on". So you basically have two screens. Not practical. Any workaround?
Same goes for games. I noticed i still have to look at the tablet to know where to press on the screen, so except when using the game controller and screen on....it is not possible to play on TV.
Am I correct? Any practical ideas? What can we use HDMI for.
My cable is also ethernet capable, which i didn't even know it exists. What about that? How to use that?
Sorry, many questions

A gamepad/controller will solve that issue. I agree that using the tablet for input and TV for displaying the output is not ideal
I've used the tablet with a micro-HDMI cable and BSPlayer with great results. It supports LAN mode (SBM/Windows file sharing), and can stream directly from RAR archives. Great for watching TV shows, etc for those of us who can't get Netflix, Hulu and so on.

This is a feature added in the HDMI 1.4 specification. It basically throws in a full duplex 100 Mbps Ethernet link alongside everything else going through the cable. It needs to be supported by both ends, and is mostly for TVs, receivers, etc. As far as I know, the TF700 does not support it, I'd be surprised if it did.
The cable is just transporting the signal, but manufacturers (and especially eBay sellers) love putting on features like that on HDMI cables. "3D support! Ethernet support! Will get you laid!" and so on
(More on HDMI 1.4, as well as version comparisons: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI#Version_1.4)
I know at least for my phone...I never really use it for anything more than playing a couple games with a controller, watching a video, or viewing photos. Maybe browsing the web, but not really. Emulators are the best, I love being able to play a little Super Smash Bros or Zelda: OoT on my TV via my phone (and tablet).

Dice Player has a Background playback.
You could hook up a PS3 controller and play some games like Shadowgun and GTA3 without having to root your device for the SixAxis app.

Can I stream netflix over 4g from my s3 to a Samsung blu ray player with allshare?

I had been waiting for the allshare cast dongle, however it is a bit pricey. If I purchase a samsung smart blu-ray player with allshare built in, can I stream netflix from my allshare enabled s3 to the blu ray player and watch it on my tv? Or, does allshare only allow you to share files that are saved on your phone? I come from motorola and I am used to the mini hdmi port on the phone. I understand that I can purchase the mhl adapter, but I would prefer to share via allshare so that I can sit back and play plants vs. zombies or watch netflix from my phone without the bulky wires. Basically I want to know if it allows you to mirror what is on your screen. If I am searching the web or text messaging on my phone, can it be shared via allshare wirelessly through an allshare enabled blu ray player and mirrored on the tv?
bump. Has anyone tried to stream netflix directly to their tv or through a blu ray player from their phone using allshare?
This is really gonna piss Verizon off. I say do it and report back. You may be the first. **** 'em!
tappidytappidytaptaptap
I'd like to know as well, I use the MHL, but it would be nice to go wireless.
I doubt it, and not because it can't be done, but something tells me Netflix wouldn't allow it. Why not tether to your blu ray player and watch Netflix that way? It will look better.

I do not have the blu ray player, but I was going to buy one depending on the answers I received. I do not watch many blu ray movies but I would have purchased one as opposed to paying 90 dollars for the allshare cast dongle. So basically, allshare does not just mirror what is on your phone screen to the tv? If I can not use allshare to watch netflix or youtube on my tv through a blu ray player then I will just buy the mhl adapter. Allshare is very limited in my opinion if all it allows you to do is watch content that is saved on your device. Is that really the case?
Net flix, hbo go, and similar apps will not allow this to work no matter what hardware your running. On some droids however, the hdmi out cable would work, but bad resolution. Have not tried with Samsung's usb to hdmi, but I'm thinking it's a no.

All share is just a dlna server.
Get a dlna bluray player and get playon going on your pc. Tether with the phone if thats your internet source.
Playon will stream most anything over dlna including netflix and hulu.
Man, you've been feed a lot of useless information. In case someone else stumbles across this thread and wants some good info:
First, no app "lets" or "won't let" let allshare work. Allshare is also not a dlna server. Apps have no control over allshare, alls apps are mirrored.
Second, I was under the same impressions you, that allshare would allow multitasking, but it doesn't.
So here is the real skinny. All content is mirrored to the secondary screen with (usually) acceptable amounts of delay.
If you are playing solitaire, or reading web pages you won't even care about the delay.
That being said; if you are trying to watch video content or playing fast pased games that require realtime adjustments you will find yourself in one of two cases:
1. Your app supports a second display over allshare. In this case you will find that audio to video will be in sync and you will have an enjoyable experience.
2. Your app does not support a second display over allshare. In this case you will find that your screen and video content ARE displayed over allshare; however, audio and video are not going to be in sync and you will hate your self flr spending $100 on the device.
Netflix, youtube, chrome, and prety much everything accept the video player built into samsung devices all fall into category #2.
you want your content to be in sync you need to use the hdmi dongle or by the docking station for the note (it has 3 usb ports and an hdmi port).
Wrapping it all up:
All share is good for slow paced apps, video with no audio, and video if you put the video on the phone or sd card.
HDMI is required for all other video viewing/gaming purposes.
