Just installed ROM Manager (5.5.23) and flashed CWM Recovery (3.2.0.0)
Before I try and flash a new ROM, tried to use ROM Manager to backup current ROM.
Getting error message:

Frankly, I think I'm way out of my league...the more I read, the more confused I get.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
I also have Titanium Backup installed if that means anything.

Thanks, TwitchyEye...
I've read the articles...I'm still learning.
Before I experiment with installing any custom ROM's or
upgrading to GB, I wanted to make sure I had my existing
ROM backed up.
Apparently, I am unable to boot into CWM recovery.
If this helps, the recovery installed on the SD card is:
clockworkmod/download/download2.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-3.2.0.0-galaxys4g.zip
I copied this file to my computer & unzipped it. It unzipped into 28 files, none of which was an
image file.
As I said before, maybe I'm way out of my league.
Thanks for the reply.
All you need to do is flash a rooted kernel with cwm already in it. Read the second post in lumin's guide. I think you are confused about how recovery works on this phone. It's in the kernel.
OK...as I understand it, I have to download a program called Odin and a
kernel and flash the kernel using Odin.
I do know how to get the phone into download mode.
I'm still a little nervous about doing this (although I was able to
root the phone without any problems).
Thanks again...
You have got to be adventurous when it comes to flashing. Luckily this phone is very hard to brick. Even if you get a boot loop with no cwm you can still one-click to stock and try again.

As I understand it, I need CWM recovery in order to back up my stock ROM...and ROM manager
is giving me all these error messages.
So...in order to get CWM recovery, I need to flash a custom kernel that includes it.
According to what I've read, I can either use Odin or SGS Kernel Flasher.
1. Which should I use
2. Which kernel should I select
Thanks...
Any particular reason you want to backup you stock ROM?

You gotta walk before you can run. One-Click yourself back to GB Stock and worry about it from there. That way, if you get screwed up, folks have a baseline to assist you from, and can "unwind" whatever it is you have managed to do to yourself.

I used to run custom ROM serendipity 5.11. Decided to give the official stock froyo a try. So, I flashed it to JF6 and installed I897UCKB1 on my captivate. Now, I miss the root privileges and also the stock ROM is still not smooth. There is a big improvement from 2.1 but not there if I compare with serendipity. There are many many threads going on here that covers this. Either get a custom ROM from Cog4 or Torch 1.5. If not then use SuperOneClickv1.6.5-ShortFuse and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=870760 for lagfix

The assistance was in the post right above your own.
The reason the old update.zip method does not work is because Froyo uses 3e recovery, which requires the update.zip files to be signed. The SuperOneClick root bypasses that and directly gives you root. After this you can install CWM, and flash the supercurio voodoo kernel, which gets you the lagfix, and rids you of 3e recovery, all at the same time.

You can install the voodoo kernel via odin, but that can't be done straight from the phone. It is also packaged as a CWM flashable update.zip, so you could do it that way, but you still need a computer to root it first. Without root, you can't get into a non 3e recovery, and without that, you can't flash the package straight from the phone.

If you can provide step by step guidance that would be great. thanks

Hi all,
I was attempting to install Darkys Extreme Edition on my brother SGS (running Froyo 2.2.1) last night and had a number of issues, i am an experienced techy and familiar with flashing etc but i am still new to Android.
I managed to flash the Speedrom kernel onto his phone using Odin, i rooted with "super one click root tool" and installed Clockwork Rom Manager from the marketplace,i then dropped the "Darkys rom Extreme Edition v9.1.zip" onto the root of the SD card and entered recovery using the button combo and received the "could not verify whole-file signature" installation aborted, the file had not been opened as i read this will break the signature but instead i downloaded the rom again from a different source and had the same problem.
I then attempted the same process by asking CWM to install the rom on the SD card, same problem and then attempted it again by entering recovery through CWM and again the same thing happened. I did some searching online and managed to find out that he needs recovery 2e (he currently has recovery 3e)
So i figured it would be simple enough - download and flash eclair 2.1 through the phone, however when i checked his "about phone" i find i9000JPW and cant for the life of me find ANY reference or firmware online for "JPW"
So with that i have the following questions - can the experienced users here spot something i am doing wrong?
and
would i be able to achieve the recovery process by flashing ANY stock, Eclair 2.1 ROM through the phone (like JPY for instance) and then be able to install Darkys Rom?
I am grateful to anyone that could shed some light on this for me, i am not currently with the phone but if i can get some solid info i can go over tomorrow and have another crack at it, ive Googled this a lot and cannot find a solid enough answer as to whether the above suggestion will help or hinder in this case.
Cheers to all
Not sure if this helps as i am not much of a wiz but i think darky rom needs the darky app from the market to tell which modem and kernel to install.
Not sure if that's actually the problem but worth a try.
Stock recovery changed from 2e to 3e from eclair to froyo which is why cwm is having problems. I had the same problem with a vibrant that had been updated to 2.2. I flashed a TW Bionix ROM and soft bricked the phone. Find the right pit and tar files and Odin back to 2.1 and you should be fine. Check out Shorty's locker on Team Whiskey. He has lots of stuff in storage.

Thanks guys ill be sure to give this a go, gongshow how will i know which tar and PIT files to use? is there a repository somewhere where i can get them for JPW? or can i use any eclair 2.1 rom (and the tar/pit files) and flash that using Odin?

Ok, all done! last night i flashed Darkys Resurrection 9.2 using Odin on my brothers SGS, downloaded Darkys configurator from the market and made any necessary changes and installed the speedmod kernel k13c total time taken from start to finish: 30mins
everything is running smoothly and exactly as he wanted it, a huge thanks to all who contributed help to this post in particluar:
ehtoeh - for putting me onto the K13c speedmod kernel and
aerobomb - for putting me onto the idea of flashing the Resurrection rom to lower recovery to 2e and then flashing Darkys 2.3 final.
You guys are awesome and i could not of done this without you, when i eventually make the move to Android ill be back and hopefully ill be able to help you guys out!
No worries bud. Hope your brother enjoys his phone. What quadrant scores did you get with darkys 9.3? I hit 1499.
Btw, you could have done it all in under 10 minutes. Speedmod k13c has CWM built in and gives you 2e recovery. Then just flash 9.3 directly. No need to go from 9.2 to 9.3 unless you really like flashing

I bought a Samsung galaxy s 4g the other day and immediately wannted to flash a ROM.
So I browsed around and found this ROM here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321611&page=4
I had the clockwork mod already(words were red) so I put it on my sd card and installed from zip.. Everything worked fine but while it starts up my screen gets full of colorful squigly lines before it starts.. But I figured its not a problem. The ROM is pretty kool...(im using it now) but when I try to go back into the clockword mod recovery...I get those same squiggly lines and then my phone restarts .... I tried quickboot but it wont work either...
My previous firmware was froyo 2.2. And this ROM is 2.3.6
Does that matter? Did I permanently damage my phone? Please...help wil be appreciated dearly.
Thanks

I flashed back to 2.3.6 via ODIN (which I assume included the gb bootloaders) and everything works perfectly, EXCEPT I cannot make a CWM backup of my current setup, only of specific apps and data I designate using Titanium Backup.
When I go into ROM Manager and select "backup current ROM" it says CWM is not installed! then it asks me to install, and gives choices for 4 phones none of which mactch exactly, just the galax si9000. So far I have been to scared to try this, I don't want to mess anything up and I KNOW clockwork recovery red is working... should I install this and will it make it so I can make a perfect backup of my entire phone?

Use superoneclick to root on froyo.
If your on 2.3.3 gb there's a flashable. Zip in development section to root.
Also you will want to use tgagunnmans nvflash method to install clockworkmod recovery in dev section.

You're still on Froyo? To my understanding it's a good idea to flash the OTA GB first so that you'll get the up to date baseband. Once that's done just go ahead and flash PB.

Yes, but make sure you're using NVFlash to get CWM. Don't use Rom Manager.
Easiest way is using the tool unlockroot. It supports gb on the G2X. Or you can use nvflash, whichever you prefer.

From that thread:
Flashing the custom recovery using NvFlash is the only way to ensure that in the case your phone will not boot up, you will be able to get into recovery to fix the issue / flash a ROM / restore from nandroid backup. That is what this app will do for you.
If you flashed the ClockworkMod recovery from ROM Manager it does not flash the recovery to your phone, it fake flashed it. The only way you can gain access to ClockworkMod recovery is through ROM Manager at that point. Using this method is the only way to flash recovery so it is persistent and accessible booting to recovery.
If you have already flashed through ROM Manager you can still proceed with this method. Flash Away!
(You can use both ROM Manager CWM and have the nvflashed version working together. You just access either or one at a time, having the nvflashed one means you can boot to CWM. Welcome to Tegra2)

Follow the link. This is a must for tegra 2 based phones. It is always better to be safe than sorry and it also allows you to do a ton of other things, such as making backups and flashing roms. Let us know if you need help. The phone is pretty much unbrickable after you do this. It gives you the ability to recover from any major mistake.
Its in the dev thread, it low level flashes clockworkmod recovery to our phones internal memory partition. You need to install apx drivers first in order for the g2x to be nvflashed.

Just to add in, nvflash allows u to boot into cwm recovery whenever u want and u don't need to be next to a computer. I think that is how it worked for Samsung phones and Odin, where u needed a computer, but haven't used a Samsung phone so I could be wrong. Remember always make a back up of everything and play around with the different roms, not every rom works for everyone
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
Actually Odin is just like nvflash. It is used to put cwm on you phone and to put the stock recovery back on.
Once you have cwm you can flash what ever rom or kernel without the need for root. Just back up your stock unrooted stock rom before flashing anything else.
If you do that you will have your own stock backup with no need of finding it in the forums if you need to go back to stock.
