[Q] recovery mode disappeared! - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

Hey guys,
I bought a Samsung galaxy s 4g the other day and immediately wannted to flash a ROM.
So I browsed around and found this ROM here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321611&page=4
I had the clockwork mod already(words were red) so I put it on my sd card and installed from zip.. Everything worked fine but while it starts up my screen gets full of colorful squigly lines before it starts.. But I figured its not a problem. The ROM is pretty kool...(im using it now) but when I try to go back into the clockword mod recovery...I get those same squiggly lines and then my phone restarts .... I tried quickboot but it wont work either...
My previous firmware was froyo 2.2. And this ROM is 2.3.6
Does that matter? Did I permanently damage my phone? Please...help wil be appreciated dearly.
Thanks

You have to install gb bootloaders... Search fbis251, he has made a guide to get it done
P.s
You have to select "reinstall package" from stock recovery to get into cwm recovery

I'm currently running 2.3.6 KJ6 with drhonk's KJ1 flashed over it, and custom debloater flashed over that. When I tried to go back to Froyo I had problems because recovery gave a signature verification error in and would not install any .zips. I flashed back to 2.3.6 via ODIN (which I assume included the gb bootloaders) and everything works perfectly, EXCEPT I cannot make a CWM backup of my current setup, only of specific apps and data I designate using Titanium Backup.
When I go into ROM Manager and select "backup current ROM" it says CWM is not installed! then it asks me to install, and gives choices for 4 phones none of which mactch exactly, just the galax si9000. So far I have been to scared to try this, I don't want to mess anything up and I KNOW clockwork recovery red is working... should I install this and will it make it so I can make a perfect backup of my entire phone?

ROM manager should not be used on this phone, assuming you have a sgs4g.
If you Odin'd ravers stock kj6 you should have cwm recovery, giving you the ability to make a back up if not consider flashing it

Need a little help doing a nandroid backup.

I'm currently rooted with everything else stock. I've decided I want to try the Bali Kernel, so I thought the first thing I should do before anything else is a backup. So I downloaded Rom Manager and followed the steps from here.
so when I ran Back Up Current Rom, I got the following. See screen shot. Is there something in that guide that is missing?
Also, someone in a similar thread said to choose Reinstall Packages. I tried that and got this. See screen shot.
you have to press reinstall packages then go to backup and restore and make a backup... and if you get that error you could try replacing the recovery file in system and then trying it again
First thing is to ditch rom manager. It has issues with the sgs4g and will give you a headache and little else. Second go to the development section and find krylons cwm final thread and follow it to the letter.
It looks like you don't have clockworkmod installed and you need this to do what you are trying.

Ok, so I followed the instructions. Replaced the Recovery file and put update.zip on the root of the sdcard. But I still needed Rom Manager to run the back up. Then did the reinstall packages again and this time it went in recovery to do the back up, and it worked.
If I didn't reinstall Rom Manager, how else would I have run a back up. I followed this guide that worked for the sidekick 4g.
you do not need rom manager at all.
do the update and recovery file go to recovery screen reinstall packages then you can goto backup and restore and either back up a rom or restore one

Got it thanks. I noticed the Galaxy S 4G is one of the phones in the Flash recovery list in Rom Manager. So would it be correct to say that the update to Rom Manager to support the SGS4G did not work? Hence, needing to manually install the recovery and update.zip files.

[Q] Best way to downgrade from GB V2.0.2 to Infused V1.5.3?

I am on GTG's GB ROM V2.0.2 but want to go back to Froyo v1.5.3 as i am seeing some issues like phone freezing way too often. I had backed up V1.5.3 using ROM MANAGER. Can i just go to CWM and install v1.5.3 backup? OR do I need to go to stock ROM 1st? Any help is appreciated! Dont want to brick my infuse
For whatever reason my back ups did not work (i think it is a number of variables like pit this vs pit that and green vs red clockwork but didnt spend much time on it)
sooo.....i did the 1click back to stock.. Super 1click root basically staryed over...reinstalled recovery and then flashed my backup.
I am still playing with the whole "why cant i just restore a back up" but dont have much time this week to mess with that this week

The easiest way to backup using titanium backup, and then flash 1.5.3 using CWM and then factory reset using CWM. I have done this many times, and am willing to help you if you need.
THIS WILL DELETE YOUR DATA.

Just went back to Odin - Stock ( Root+3e), then installed V1.5.3, nothing was deleted from SD card... just the apps
Will now only upgrade to GB once ATT releases GB, had too many issues with Roger GB!

You cannot restore a froyo backup from a gingerbread cwm recovery. You need to go to stock first using gtg's unbrick. Then I suggest after the first boot to do a factory reset from the settings within the phone not cwm. Then root and flash a froyo kernel using sgs kernel flasher from the market.
After that you can restore a backup with no problems.

That's exactly what I said above...but loglud is either misreading what the op is trying to do... or claims to be doing so from cwm...
Just realized tonight that if you use this file in this thread...you go back to ROOTED stock, with modded 3e recovery...takes a few steps out if you are just trying to get back to rooted stock
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1092021
and use this file name he attached at the end of the post

-> From GTG's GB V2.0.2, went to stock ( root+3e recovery) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1092021
-> Then install V1.5.3 froyo in CWM. Wipe data/factory reset for safe side. Just the Apps get deleted.. Data on Internal SD is not wiped.

edit: indeed..that is the step I was missing
Thanks guys!
1. Back up current GB rom
2. Flash Froyo ROM
3. Factory Reset via CWM
4. Boot
5. Let system settle
6. Reboot into recovery
7. restore back up of said froyo rom
worked like a charm

Can't get into recovery, can't flash different rom/kernel. Help!

alright i've been up all night and i have no idea what i did. i guess we'll start from the top.
one clicked rooted
downloaded rom manager
installed cwm
installed bionix frost rom
decided to mess with voodoo
and where it gets messy...
wanted to try out a gingerbread rom, so flashed after a full wipe
forgot to turn off voodoo
now when i try to get to the recovery screen, its all garbled. sometimes it doesnt even come up.
on top of that, i cant mount the sd card anyway. what should i do?
Do not use rom manager use the cmw from krylons post. To install gb you need gb bootloaders. So. Install kg4 leak by chadster than isnatll kg4 kernel than flash your gb rom thru cmw and walla..

I got used Odin to flash that hawk.zip from another post to get it back to stock. I've never really dealt with partitions before, so it'll take some getting used to making sure everything is mounted.
Wouldn't work on my computer and I was up all night trying to figure out how to wipe and flash from adb lol. Feels good to finally get some sleep.
I'll make sure to read guides more throughly before flashing on phones I don't own lol.

[HELP] problems with cwm and roms

Hi!I just can figure whats wrong with the phone.I am very sorry to have to post this but this is what i have done until now:
-it was original t-mobile sgs4g soft 2.3.6
1. i downgraded to froyo
2. tried to apply the froyo cwm recovery
3. didnt worked (dunno why)
4. installed another version with odin http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1193751 the cwm worked but it kept having cant mount sd card
5. installed the new cwm with kernel ..didnt worked same thing
6.installled again the froyo with odin
7. finnaly worked installed the octane
8. octane froze at sgs4g screen ,not boot animation , kept reseting
9. 3 flashes and froyo and bla bla after i installed the black valhalla
10. valhalla works but i cant recieve calls sms or mms...
11. Need help!
Don't flash GB stuff on froyo boot loaders. Don't flash froyo stuff on GB boot loaders. If don't know how to repartition with a pit don't flash boot loaders as boot loader flashes may hard brick your device. If your unsure about what your flashing matching your boot loaders don't flash it. Finally all your mixing and matching incorrectly probably got you some weird gremlins so learn how to"one click" back to stock (I wrote a noob guide in general section) and start over. This will ensure GB boot loaders are flashed correctly good luck

I was having some problems with little things in octane also, but what fixed mine was wiping the cache, dalvik cache, flashing, ( mounts UMMU), reboot, check functionality, reboot into cwm, fix permissions, reboot, enjoy.

[Q] Trying To Back Up Current ROM Using ROM Manager

Just installed ROM Manager (5.5.23) and flashed CWM Recovery (3.2.0.0)
Before I try and flash a new ROM, tried to use ROM Manager to backup current ROM.
Getting error message:
Failed to verify whole-file signature
Signature Verification Failed
Installation Aborted
Samsung Galaxy S 4G (sgh-t959v)
Froyo 2.2.1
Kernel 2.6.32.9
Rooted using Super 1 Click
Frankly, I think I'm way out of my league...the more I read, the more confused I get.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
I also have Titanium Backup installed if that means anything.

Thanks, TwitchyEye...
I've read the articles...I'm still learning.
Before I experiment with installing any custom ROM's or
upgrading to GB, I wanted to make sure I had my existing
ROM backed up.
Apparently, I am unable to boot into CWM recovery.
If this helps, the recovery installed on the SD card is:
clockworkmod/download/download2.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-3.2.0.0-galaxys4g.zip
I copied this file to my computer & unzipped it. It unzipped into 28 files, none of which was an
image file.
As I said before, maybe I'm way out of my league.
Thanks for the reply.
All you need to do is flash a rooted kernel with cwm already in it. Read the second post in lumin's guide. I think you are confused about how recovery works on this phone. It's in the kernel.
OK...as I understand it, I have to download a program called Odin and a
kernel and flash the kernel using Odin.
I do know how to get the phone into download mode.
I'm still a little nervous about doing this (although I was able to
root the phone without any problems).
Thanks again...
You have got to be adventurous when it comes to flashing. Luckily this phone is very hard to brick. Even if you get a boot loop with no cwm you can still one-click to stock and try again.

As I understand it, I need CWM recovery in order to back up my stock ROM...and ROM manager
is giving me all these error messages.
So...in order to get CWM recovery, I need to flash a custom kernel that includes it.
According to what I've read, I can either use Odin or SGS Kernel Flasher.
1. Which should I use
2. Which kernel should I select
Thanks...

You gotta walk before you can run. One-Click yourself back to GB Stock and worry about it from there. That way, if you get screwed up, folks have a baseline to assist you from, and can "unwind" whatever it is you have managed to do to yourself.
