How do i determine if a rom with work in my phone? I have tried numerous methods posted in these forums. I keep running into the same problem. For some reason when i have booted into recovery, and then i select to reinstall data files., i get a permission error. Has anyone ran into this problem before. Also what is gingerbread and ice cream sandwich, do i need to update my phone to one of these dor i can install rom or are those rom themselves. Im totally lost and new at this, so any help would be great. Can some point me in the right direction.

My phone already rooted is there a way to update from froyo to gingerbread without using kies? Also i copied my efs file but it seems to have nothing in it? Why?

If you're rooted, follow the guide in the second link of signature - flash with bootloaders - then go back to the first guide for help flashing a custom ROM in CWM.
After you flash bhunven's KJ6 Heimdall One-Click make a nandroid backup in CWM to have a copy of your efs folder and copy to your computer.

Hi all,
I was attempting to install Darkys Extreme Edition on my brother SGS (running Froyo 2.2.1) last night and had a number of issues, i am an experienced techy and familiar with flashing etc but i am still new to Android.
I managed to flash the Speedrom kernel onto his phone using Odin, i rooted with "super one click root tool" and installed Clockwork Rom Manager from the marketplace,i then dropped the "Darkys rom Extreme Edition v9.1.zip" onto the root of the SD card and entered recovery using the button combo and received the "could not verify whole-file signature" installation aborted, the file had not been opened as i read this will break the signature but instead i downloaded the rom again from a different source and had the same problem.
I then attempted the same process by asking CWM to install the rom on the SD card, same problem and then attempted it again by entering recovery through CWM and again the same thing happened. I did some searching online and managed to find out that he needs recovery 2e (he currently has recovery 3e)
So i figured it would be simple enough - download and flash eclair 2.1 through the phone, however when i checked his "about phone" i find i9000JPW and cant for the life of me find ANY reference or firmware online for "JPW"
So with that i have the following questions - can the experienced users here spot something i am doing wrong?
and
would i be able to achieve the recovery process by flashing ANY stock, Eclair 2.1 ROM through the phone (like JPY for instance) and then be able to install Darkys Rom?
I am grateful to anyone that could shed some light on this for me, i am not currently with the phone but if i can get some solid info i can go over tomorrow and have another crack at it, ive Googled this a lot and cannot find a solid enough answer as to whether the above suggestion will help or hinder in this case.
Cheers to all
Not sure if this helps as i am not much of a wiz but i think darky rom needs the darky app from the market to tell which modem and kernel to install.
Not sure if that's actually the problem but worth a try.
Stock recovery changed from 2e to 3e from eclair to froyo which is why cwm is having problems. I had the same problem with a vibrant that had been updated to 2.2. I flashed a TW Bionix ROM and soft bricked the phone. Find the right pit and tar files and Odin back to 2.1 and you should be fine. Check out Shorty's locker on Team Whiskey. He has lots of stuff in storage.

Thanks guys ill be sure to give this a go, gongshow how will i know which tar and PIT files to use? is there a repository somewhere where i can get them for JPW? or can i use any eclair 2.1 rom (and the tar/pit files) and flash that using Odin?
Download hardcores latest speedmod kernel and flash via Odin. That's all you need to get recovery 2e. Then install your favorite rom and enjoy.

Ah, this sounds like what i was looking for, thank you! i'll download that ROM and if i can get over there tonight ill attempt it tonight instead of waiting until tomorrow, ill go look up a tutorial for flashing roms in Odin too, since i have so far only flashed a kernel with it, thanks for all the help guys i really appreciate it, especially since i'm hoping to get an Android phone myself soon and i wont be able to leave it alone til its all custom!
Ok, all done! last night i flashed Darkys Resurrection 9.2 using Odin on my brothers SGS, downloaded Darkys configurator from the market and made any necessary changes and installed the speedmod kernel k13c total time taken from start to finish: 30mins
everything is running smoothly and exactly as he wanted it, a huge thanks to all who contributed help to this post in particluar:
ehtoeh - for putting me onto the K13c speedmod kernel and
aerobomb - for putting me onto the idea of flashing the Resurrection rom to lower recovery to 2e and then flashing Darkys 2.3 final.
You guys are awesome and i could not of done this without you, when i eventually make the move to Android ill be back and hopefully ill be able to help you guys out!
No worries bud. Hope your brother enjoys his phone. What quadrant scores did you get with darkys 9.3? I hit 1499.
Btw, you could have done it all in under 10 minutes. Speedmod k13c has CWM built in and gives you 2e recovery. Then just flash 9.3 directly. No need to go from 9.2 to 9.3 unless you really like flashing

So here is my dilemma. I have the Galaxy S4g the stock firmware version 2.3.6 gingerbread. Since this update, my phone has become less and less stable. I therefore would like to try out some custom roms. I have my device rooted using superoneclick root.
Tried to flash CWM Final, following the instructions, including pasting recovery in the system/bin folder. Further research led me to the understanding that just using this method will not work with a device running 2.3.6.
Problem one, was when I tried to paste the recovery file, there was not in the /bin folder. I did notice that the recovery file is in the root directory of the phone. Can I replace this recovery file with the modified one in the root directory, and then will this allow me to flash CWM ?
If not, is it possible to even flash cwm onto the GS4G? IF so, I am sure that there is a how to out there somewhere.
Some help would be greatly appreciated here.

I had the same issue. recovery goes in sysbin folder.
next make sure the rom you eventually would like to use is in your root.
next you'll have to use heimedall and flash the appropriate kernal (kj6 is what I used, from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1380331
reboot after that and make your necessary changes to the mount system as required by the dev of your desired rom, and follow their instructions to flash.

Just installed ROM Manager (5.5.23) and flashed CWM Recovery (3.2.0.0)

Thanks, TwitchyEye...
I've read the articles...I'm still learning.
Before I experiment with installing any custom ROM's or
upgrading to GB, I wanted to make sure I had my existing
ROM backed up.
Apparently, I am unable to boot into CWM recovery.
If this helps, the recovery installed on the SD card is:
clockworkmod/download/download2.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-3.2.0.0-galaxys4g.zip
I copied this file to my computer & unzipped it. It unzipped into 28 files, none of which was an
image file.
As I said before, maybe I'm way out of my league.
Thanks for the reply.
All you need to do is flash a rooted kernel with cwm already in it. Read the second post in lumin's guide. I think you are confused about how recovery works on this phone. It's in the kernel.
OK...as I understand it, I have to download a program called Odin and a
kernel and flash the kernel using Odin.
I do know how to get the phone into download mode.
I'm still a little nervous about doing this (although I was able to
root the phone without any problems).
Thanks again...
You have got to be adventurous when it comes to flashing. Luckily this phone is very hard to brick. Even if you get a boot loop with no cwm you can still one-click to stock and try again.

As I understand it, I need CWM recovery in order to back up my stock ROM...and ROM manager
is giving me all these error messages.
So...in order to get CWM recovery, I need to flash a custom kernel that includes it.
According to what I've read, I can either use Odin or SGS Kernel Flasher.
1. Which should I use
2. Which kernel should I select
Thanks...
Any particular reason you want to backup you stock ROM?

You gotta walk before you can run. One-Click yourself back to GB Stock and worry about it from there. That way, if you get screwed up, folks have a baseline to assist you from, and can "unwind" whatever it is you have managed to do to yourself.
Hi, So i'm on version 2.3.3 21e. My phone was on 21y previously, so my baseband is that of the 21y. When i go to call all i hear is popping noises.
I followed the tutorial on how to run the KDZ update but my computer keeps saying permission denied for the offline version, and for the online version it just keeps saying (Not responding) then windows force closes the program. Is there an alternative method to flashing 21y 2.3.4?
Note: I made program exceptions for my firewall that is not the issue
If I can just put 2.3.4 on my SD card and then boot into CWM, and extract, would that work?
All you have to do is flash the new baseband fix. Twitch posted a link to it in your earlier thread. Download it from your phone, not your PC. Then shut your phone off, boot into cwm recovery. Select flash zip from SD card. Choose the baseband zip file you just downloaded to flash it. Then select reboot and your calls should be fine.

I get that, but I want to install 2.3.4. or am I better off on 2.3.3 to flash eaglesblood?

Better off with 2.3.3 for most roms including EB. however, because you were on the 21y baseband I think you were originally on 2.3.4 like I was.

I'm pretty sure you were originally on 2.3.4 21y so try flashing the first zip file in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1776843

Hey guys! Maybe I am really bad at finding stuff, but could someone clearly post the stock ICS software for the blaze? For all the recoveries to go back to stock, I keep finding the gingerbread ones. I currently am running CM 11, and if anything goes wrong, I know that I need to use the ICS recovery, rather than the gingerbread one. Thank you in advance for helping a helpless noob! XP

FOR EVERYONE HAVING ANY PROBLEMS RETURNING TO STOCK FIRMWARE READ THIS
So first register at www.sammobile.com, then search SGH-T769 under firmware and download the August 2012 ICS or The Feb 2013 ICS Firmware, wait for the download to finish (took me 30 minutes) then extract which ever firmware zip you downloaded then using Odin click on PDA and select the .md5 file which is located in the extracted ICS Firmware Folder that you've downloaded from sammobile.com
Download the PIT file here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1919228
Click on PIT in Odin and then select the one downloaded from the link above
Edit: I believe the pit file download link at that thread no longer works but if I remember correctly the pit file isn't needed (it's not do or die) you can continue without it your phone will be fine
then make sure re-partition isn't checked and start the flashing process after it is done flashing and reboots you'll have stock ICS.
*IF YOU WANT TO ROOT IT READ BELOW*
to root it simply follow the instructions over at the root ics stock thread found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1919228
This will flash a custom recovery and once the recovery is flashed using Odin reboot into recovery and flash the superuser.zip then you'll have Rooted Stock ICS Firmware
*BOOT LOOP MIGHT OCCUR*
To fix boot looping after flashing stock ICS just boot into stock recovery and wipe data and cache then reboot or on custom recover wipe cache and dalvik cache reboot and you're good to go.
If I helped you in anyway don't be afraid to hit thanks!

Thanks a lot man! I was rooting my mom's phone (we all got blazes... Go figure!) and ran into an issue when I ran into a bootloop the first time I tried rooting... When I tried undoing the softbrick, I accidentally loaded the gingerbread stock back on, rather than ICS, and found that her SD partition was inaccessible. Thankfully, using the stock ICS, I reverted back to it and then rooted again when done with that. She's now on ProvisionMod, and its running smooth as butter! I was hesitant to put her on Kitkat cuz I know the camera bug still needs to be worked out... But when that's fixed, I plan on putting her on something like CM 11 when its all said and done. Thanks to all the helpful developers who made all of this possible! You guys are the best!!!!!
