I'm hoping this will be figured out since it's a major feature that will never get to be used.
I for one am using the ATT Titan unlocked and on a different carrier (Telus) and yet when switching it on it still asks me to contact ATT or dial 611 to use tethering.
I highly doubt calling ATT from Canada will allow me to use this feature. I also doubt Telus (who doesn't support non Telus phones) will be able to help me either. I also doubt HTC can do anything.
There has to be a workaround for this.
I have got the same problem using an AT&T Samsung Focus S on Rogers. there seem to be no way to remove this unless you get it dev unlocked and play with the settings.
but even that is impossible now since Chevron Unlock has been down for a while now.
its actually a feature i used almost everyday. im gonna give it a few days, if there is still no solution, im going back to my galaxy s2. as much as i hate android, at least when you pay 500$ for a phone, you can what u want with it.
I would think that for HTC devices, that you could use the HTC Connection Setup app to configure your device for your carrier and that should point it in the right direction.
Most other manufacturer's provide a similar tool for their phones and I would assume using those tools would also configure your device to work specifically on other carriers.
Otherwise, it would be something that you'd have to contact HTC/Samsung/LG to see if they can provide a tool or fix to configure your device properly.
I doubt they would help since they sell devices to carriers, they will tell you to contact carriers. I downloaded the Samsung Wireless manager but even though i use Rogers APN, it seems stuck on AT&T APN for the Internet connection sharing.
aside from this issue i really liked the phone, too bad !
I have the same thing on my HTC titan from at&t - amazing phone but the tethering is a bummer --> starting to think I should have got the HTC ultimate from Brazil - it has the same bands as the at&t one but doesn't have any of the carrier branding on it.
I'm going to give it some time - once interop unlock is available im sure someone will find a way around the at&t lockout - or at the very least we should be able to flash the Brazil rom onto our phones
My Surround didn't even get 7740...
Is anyone here using a non-AT&T branded HTC 8X on AT&T with everything working on 2G and 3G? I don't care about 4G for this particular case.
Does Voice, SMS, MMS in both directions, and data work?
Does AT&T detect it as a smartphone and require the right data plan?
Thanks.
Edit: I decided to buy both a Verizon 8X and a T-Mobile 8X to test.
After 4 days the Verizon was detected
T-Mobile one has still not been detected. Will update if it does.

I'm pretty sure you would be able to get 3G with any unlocked 8X but only certain models have LTE radios. You will probably need to add an APN to get you're Data/MMS working 100% and I at least had an issue with tethering (not sure if it is hardware or software related) but other than that you should be golden.
Although obvious, I may as well say it. It should be an unlocked phone.
I'm asking for people with personal experience because Windows Phone is such a pain with APN configuration. I have tried a couple unlocked Verizon phones but they won't work with MMS no matter what I do. There is the generic unbranded GSM version, but that one is expensive compared to the branded ones. Also people are complaining that that HTC connection setup utility is broken on the 8X so I would just really like to know if anyone has actually tested it. I don't want to get the AT&T version because they recognize that one and require a data plan and I don't want one on this line.

Well, ummm, I am talking about personal experience and those are my experiences. What more specifically would you like to know?
BTW, adding the APN is extremely easy if you know how...

Which version of the phone are you using? International unbranded?

Yes. Voice, SMS, MMS and data worked fine. AT&T see it just fine and actually, you will probably see it listed in MyATT after you put the SIM in.
My phone is a C625a which has LTE however, an international unlocked version or a Verizon version will work but only certain models will get LTE because of the radios as mentioned above.

Is your phone a non-AT&T 8X? Or is it the AT&T branded one?
They are detecting it as an 8X?
Like my thread title says, I want to know if anyone is using a non-AT&T branded 8X. I DO NOT want them to know what phone it is because if they recognize it then they will require a "correct" smartphone data plan which I do not want.
I tried a Verizon Lumia 822 but I could not get MMS to work at all. They even removed the internet and MMS apn configuration pages built into WP8. I could use the Nokia app for setting the APN, but even with the correct MMS settings incoming MMS would not work. Outgoing would work just fine and everything else worked.
I just want to know if anyone has a non-AT&T 8X where everything on 3G works and that AT&T doesn't detect it.

I'm sorry but you are very unclear. So your phone is NOT an AT&T branded 8X and they DO detect it as an 8X and require the smartphone data plan?

You haven't clearly answered this. All of your answers were ambiguous whether you were answering "YES" to "is it non-AT&T branded" or if it was a response to "Does AT&T detect it as a smartphone and require the right data plan?"

I'm sorry that my questions were too confusing for you.
Maybe having it in a list will make it easier for people to respond
Questions:
1. Do you have a non-AT&T branded HTC 8X
2. Does this HTC 8X work 100% with calls, SMS, MMS in both directions, and data connectivity on 3G
3. Does AT&T detect this as a smartphone (Which will force you to have a smartphone dataplan)?

Simply using a SIM card does not mean AT&T knows what kind of phone it is. AT&T does not detect all smartphones as smartphones. They can detect all AT&T smartphones correctly and they have the ability to detect some non-AT&T smartphones, but not all. It's mostly the very popular unlocked models such as the Nexus models. Most other phones aren't in there database and just appear as unknown.
For instance they do not have the ability of detecting the ATIV S. I have one of those running on one of my lines with a $10 unlimited data plan. It doesn't support AT&T LTE, though, but that isn't an issue for the line it is on.
I would buy another ATIV S for this line, but it's too expensive at around $500. There are many 8Xs available for around $250 and I want to see if anyone is using any of those models without a correct data plan on AT&T.

Don't give up. Since you are the only one here did this. Go to your Myatt account page and see which phone is listed there for your line. If it listed as unknown or generic phone, it does not know you are using a Smartphone. If it listed as you are using a 8x, it means AT&T knows your phone is a smartphone. That's what OP wants.
As for OP, unlike WP7, WP8 lets you add data and MMS APNs easily.

I ended up buying both a Tmobile 8X and a Verizon 8X. AT&T hasn't detected either and it's been 3 days. The Tmobile one fully works and the Verizon one can't send MMS.
Verizon removed the ability to set a MMS APN manually and the HTC Connection Setup app doesn't work on the Verizon one. It works on the Tmobile one but I believe it configures the phones using the Phone APN for both Internet and MMS. You don't have access to the Phone APN unless you have a smartphone data plan, but thankfully Tmobile didn't screw around too much with the firmware and I was able to manually enter the connection information for both Internet and MMS.
That was interesting. On AT&T 8x, you have two buttons, one to add data APN and one to add MMC APN.

Yeah the T-Mobile has both Internet and MMS APN options, but on Verizon the MMS APN option was removed with the Portico update and was present but didn't work (didn't save anything) before Portico.
The Verizon Lumia 822 had both internet and MMS options pre-portico and they both saved what was entered but post-portico they were both gone. Nokia has an APN configuration app though that works post-Portico. Unfortunately even with MMS configured the 822 just won't receive MMS. When an MMS comes in it says "Message not found". Sending MMS from the 822 works fine on AT&T though.
Basically Verizon ****s up MMS so you can't fully utilize a Verizon phone on a GSM carrier.
My T-Mobile 8X mic doesn't work when set to speakerphone though so I will need to get it replaced. I found a few people online with the same issue but they found no solution other than replacement.
The 8X is such a mess.
I guess Verizon will use its CDMA network to deliver MMS. So, it is a problem for them to expose the MMS settings for GSM which may hinder the MMS on CDMA network.
Basically, title. I thought the phone would change to possibly AT&T since H2O is a MVNO that uses their network... Should I just flash U1 firmware? If so, how to do that without losing data is possible.
This won't totally get rid of it but you won't see the icons anymore and it will be disabled:
You can disable almost anything with the command below:
from adb use: adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 <package_to_disable>
leave off the brackets. Get the actual package name by using My APK pro app to find actual name.
I don't think you would want to flash a different carrier ROM onto the phone - likely asking for trouble in a number of functions.
You may flash the unlocked stock variant of the ROM through ODIN, as described in: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/sm-a716u1-5g-firmware-for-us-models.4144387/
I am running it the latest version of it. It is great and no carrier bloat. Samsung bloat is of course....present.

Hi, on a related matter, ATT is telling me that my unlocked TM A71 is incompatible with their network (after 3G sunset) because it is not VoLTE capable. TM support site says VoLTE is on by default but no menu options are provided to enable or disable. Anyone know whether this issue can be resolved using the stock ROM?
I'm having the same issue. With a TMobile csv. Any ideas? Is there a way to get a att csv rom? So that volte is enabled?

Don't know if this will work for you but it's worth a shot -- I took my SIM and put it in my old 4G phone, got it going, then put the SIM back in the A71. It's still working, in fact I'm sending this message from it. Keeping my fingers crossed.
UPDATE, 03/20/22: My phone stopped being able to send or receive calls a couple days ago, so apparently my workaround was short-lived. It is still able to send and receive SMS and MMS and provide hotspot. For now, I've forwarded all inbound calls to my GV #, but when this current month's plan comes close to an end, I'm ditching AT&T for Verizon.
UPDATE, 7/20/22: Apparently an OTA update from TM fixed the issue with my phone not working on the ATT network. Some weeks ago it started working; I hesitated to mention it here thinking it could stop working at any minute after the back and forth with ATT I posted about earlier, but it's been close to 3 months now.
My A71 5G was a Sprint version and T convinced me to SIM swap and it installed that hideous magenta boot screen and that T jingle. When I rebooted I was mad. They should warn you.
My phone was unlocked, network wise, so....
I cross flashed the U1 US Unlocked firmware with patched ODIN and it turned out great.
What carrier are you with now? TM? I can't use TM where I live because their coverage blows (TM 5G slower than ATT 3G), to the point where it's unusable. BTW, Sprint also sucks where I live.

How do i unlock my Sim Network on Galaxy A71 5G T-Mobile carrier?
Please guys, how do i unlock my local sim network here in Nigeria?
I bought a second hand used Samsung Galaxy A71 5g from a vendor here. My local network won't work on the phone, telling me it's locked. The phone runs on a Snapdragon chip.
I'm really desperate about unlocking the network, how to i go about this?

You're probably going to have to buy a network unlock code. Or try and get in contact with the original seller and explain the situation. Usually the original owner of the phone can request a network unlock code from their carrier if the phone is fully paid off.
Okay to be clear I know an unlocked T-Mobile phone will work on the Verizon network my question is if I use a Verizon sim card in a T-Mobile phone will I be able to use the tethering or mobile hotspot feature without it popping up I need to get a subscription from Verizon that has happened in the past with carrier specific phones it does not happen when you get a completely unlocked phone from Samsung so that is my question will I be able to use the mobile hotspot without it popping up I need to subscribe from Verizon so if you have that information I would love to hear it thank you
I guess you'll have to try it and see what happens. If it doesn't work, there are usually workaround tricks
Before I get on hold with AT&T tech support, I wanted to ask the experts if anyone else has had this issue.
I bought my new A32 about a month ago. It was branded for T-Mobile, but was unlocked already.
In the past, I just put my AT&T sim card in the new phone and it was ready to go (I don't mind the T-Mobile start screen).
It worked fine for a couple of weeks, then T-Mobile sent out an update and it stopped receiving texts. AT&T put in a new sim card, and that fixed the text problem, but now it won't make or accept phone calls. Calls go right to voice mail. When I try to dial a number, it just disconnects immediately.
Anyone have any idea of what could be wrong?
Thanks.
You bought an unlocked phone for a different carrier, unlocked by a third party, and updated it.
the phone can have some issues if...
1. the software version running is different (each carriers may have different versions they approved and pushed to update for their customers, hence not supporting some versions)
2. If you have unlocked and the carrier is some minor name carrier and not the main ATT then the phone may not be supported by them.
You should backup all your data to either Google or Samsung account or whatever option is shown... then ask to have the device flashed with the latest market software version from ATT. Hope this helps.

I have the same problem. Acquired a NIB T-mobile Samsung A32 that is confirmed unlocked but doesn't work on PuretalkUSA when it came to calling or receiving calls. Texting and websurfing works but call get immediately terminated and calls made to the phone go automatically to VM. I spent three hours on the phone with Puretalk tech to make sure the settings were correct. The tech had me attempt to update the carrier configuration version to no avail. It refused to update and remained at version 0.0.0. I then stuck an T-mobile sim in the phone and noticed that the carrier config version change to some series that I currently do not recall. However, I still could not make or receive calls. I then purchased a prepaid ATT sim and stuck it in the phone. The carrier config version changed back to 0.0.0 but I was able to make and receive calls. I'm putting one more call in to puretalk to make sure I've tried everything before giving up on the phone.
I recommend that you check this guy's video on youtube. He seems to be on to something:
