[Q] Root w/ 3.18 Update - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Hello!
I've been reading about how to root my HTC One XL that is currently on version 3.18. I have checked various other threads, and the consensus seems to be that I missed my opportunity to root. I just wanted to verify if this was the case with the community here, and if someone knew anything about any advances in exploits to install SU.
Just some background: I've rooted my previous phones a few times before (all HTC), but they all had unlocked bootloaders, so it wasn't too much of a hassle. About a month ago, I realized that 3.18 was out, and curiosity got me to update my phone. Unfortunately, it killed off my immediate hopes of rooting as well, something that I just realized a few days later.
Thanks!

root lost after 2.3.340 OTA update cannot get it back

Here's a good one for any devs. I have been fussing with this for 3 days and am at my wits end.
I noticed the other day there was a software update from VZW for my droid X. That night I get home launch ADB name all the renamed .apk bloatware back to normal, and DL & install the update.
After doing so I as expected lost root. No biggie I thought as I Had rooted my phone previously with little effort. Long story short after numerous attempts and now several different methods including z4, 1 click root, etc... I still am unable to regain root access, and am stuck with read only access to the file system.
I have posted on a coupe different forums with this query, and it seems to be a mixed problem. some are able to regain root, others are like me and locked out completely.
So.. the question here lies in this??? is there something VZW or Motorola have done with this update to disallow rooting, and if so is it possible to roll back my OS to stock 2.2 Froyo prior to this update? Alternatively does anyone else know of any tricks I may have overlooked in successfully rooting my DX.
Thanks in advance!!!
Same here. Tried z4 and onion root. Tried the terminal emulator method. Nothing works.

No, nothing they did. It happened because you accepted an OTA while rooted. Every root guide on here should tell you never to accept an ota when rooted, or you could permanently lose root.
i'm in the same boat as the poster. i accepted it while rooted, unrooted and then installed it. It appears i am locked out from rooting.

Maybe it's just me, but I always thought that the bootloader and the OS were separate entities. Unlocked bootloaders were promised yes, but, the promise to keep exploits in the OS for rooting was not promised. These are 2 SEPARATE ENTITIES!
Correct.

I don't think it will be hard for any of the talented developers we have here to root the OTA ROM. Obtaining S-Off after accepting the update might be another matter, and accepting the update on a rooted but otherwise stock TBolt might break root. But as long as you've rooted before the GB update I'm sure we'll be fine. It's the poor suckers who haven't rooted waiting for the update, and once it comes decide they want to root that I feel sorry for.
don't install the OTA until it's cracked by the devs, simple as that. i give it a day or two and it would be rooted. they never close all the root exploits.

As said, the BootLoader and rooting the OS are two different things..
That being said... I expect the DEV's to root upcoming GB updates... After all, chingy51o just created Gingeritis v1.2 from a new "non-test" GB rom... and its rooted.

Building a rom that has root access is not the same thing as gaining root access on an existing installation.
Its not really the same thing, but think about having admin rights on a machine with windows already installed, verses installing it yourself. If someone else has secured the machine, getting admin could be quite hard (stfu peanut gallery, I know that's only in theory).
If you install from scratch though, you just have to tell it to make you admin
What this means though, is with source, bootloader is everything. They can lock the rom down three ways from sunday, but if devs have source, and an open bootloader, we can install WTF ever we want on the phone.
Its silly that they are so quiet with updates its not like they are launching a spy satellite but anyway. Phase 2 out of how many phases? Just curious what their proper procedure is.

I understand the analogy of admin rights on windows already vs a regular user trying to get admin rights after the fact.
I'm not a developer, nor do I know the first thing about creating a "custom rom"... so my thought is... Chingy51o used a "GB leak that is newer than the last" as the base to create Gingeritis v1.2 which is rooted.... How much harder can it be for the DEV's to put out an already rooted/busyboxed version of that GB ROM Chingy used as the base?
And if that is possible... then the S-Off/Root processes (where you flash to older rom first to exploit...) could be used by those who took the upgrade... and flash the already rooted ROM, no?

You might not be able to downgrade once you accept the update, this happened on the Incredible. They had rooted 2.1 on the Incredible, then there was an OTA (still 2.1) which required you to downgrade to root, similar to what we're doing now. When Froyo came out, of you accepted the OTA there was no way to downgrade and root. We (I personally) had to wait for them (the unrevoked team) to crack froyo to gain root access. I would suggest you root now, then wait for someone to release a rooted version of the OTA. Just my experience in the matter.
Why not flash an older RUU that has the known exploit?

I'm not saying you won't be able to after the GB OTA on the Thunderbolt, but on the Incredible after the Froyo OTA you could not flash an older RUU. That's my knowledge on the subject.

Sorry, my memory on each phone and their specific quirks is fuzzy (between the D1, X, INC and TB, and add in the NookColor and Xoom, and I sometimes have troubles remembering)
But I do remember a friend had sent me his Inc for my then fiance (now wife)... he didn't S-OFF, took an update and lost root... So when I got it, I had to jump through a few hoops to get her's S-OFF and rooted as the Unrevoked tools didn't work on that version yet.
Are you thinking that the Dev's wont be able to pack a pre-rooted/busybox'd/SU version for those with S-OFF and root already?

I think they absolutely will be able to, in fact I almost know so. I'm simply not sure how easy it will be to obtain s-off after accepting the update. I could be wrong, it's happened before, I think it was on a Tuesday...
Edit: In other words, I think it would be wise to obtain s-off while on 2.2 then wait for one of our wonderful developers to provide a rooted version.
It seems HTC's 2.3.4 Gingerbread builds are quite secure. I guess all builds of it are, not just HTC's. I have just noticed a trend with HTC's builds being rather difficult to obtain even temp root.

Hopefully people are looking into it now that the new GB rom has leaked.
AlphaRevX managed to unlock the bootloaders on the evo 3D and sensation. Don't see what would be diffrent on the Thunderbolt if it gets locked down again.

What is the best current way to root & unlock VZW S3?

Guys, I have spent hours rooting and unlocking my S3. Reason it has taken so long is either I don't know what I'm doing or there are so many ways to do it, some may be outdated or something. I'll side with the first reason. But, I do have experience in rooting...kept my OG Droid rooted/overclocked/customized. Did the same with my Thunderbolt. Also rooted my S3 a few months ago after the VZW update that crapped out the radio. When they released the fix, I removed root and installed it. Got the urge for some new stuff and here I am...
Here is what I'm doing:
- Using CausalR795b. Seems quick and easy. Definitely provides root, but I'm not sure about unlocking the bootloader. What is the insecure aboot? Says it's ready to install it, but I can't find out what this is?
- Trying to install TWRP recovery. What is the easiest way to do this? The last time I did it with Goomanager, I got the Verizon Unauthorized Software message at boot.
- Trying to install the latest Hyperdrive ROM. Got it installed once and on reboot, got the VZW Unauthorized message again,
- Using ODIN 3.07 to flash a stock ROM after getting the error message.
Can anyone tell me a link with good directions, start to finish? Or, give me some advice? To me, at least, seems like VZW has made customizing the S3 unnecessarily complicated,
Thanks in advance.
Insecure aboot is the unlocked bootloader. Once you install that you will no longer get the VZW Unauthorized message.
First welcome to the community.
second, this is the wrong section.
third, you have to use D2VZW-CASUAL-R634b release to fully unlock bootloader

My bad...I did post in the wrong place. Wasn't even thinking about it. Had just spent so long in this subforum trying to find answers, must have lost my bearing.
I really appreciate your help! The older Causal did everything in one try with no hiccups whatsoever. Why isn't anything posted about this noted in the newer Causal thread? It might be in there somewhere and if I would have seen it, hours would have been saved.
Now rocking the newest Hyperdrive and probably going to try a few more ROM's. Thanks again!

Proper way to go about rooting

Okay so I just received my brand new M8 through Amazon and luckily it came shipped with 4.4.2 out of the box.
I may or may not want to install roms as of yet, but I at least want root to remove the bloatware. What's the best way to go about achieving that and to updating to 4.4.4 while maintaining root?
The two exploits for the m8 (firewater and sunshine) both unlock the bootloader and turn s-off. Firewater is free and only works on some 4.4.2 devices. Sunshine is SUPER easy, costs $25 (I think) and works on 4.4.3 or lower and is expected to be updated soon to work with 4.4.4.
Once s-off you should find (at a minimum) the pinned threads for details on flashing recovery and the super user/super su binaries.
Newbie (not intended to be insulting) advice: it sounds like you have a lot of reading to do. While your question is reasonable, it implies that there's a lot you may not know and gaining s-off opens parts of your phone that you can really screw up. Read read read everything you can BEFORE flashing anything.
Welcome to the m8.

Definitely don't take the OTA update to 4.4.4 until you've got s-off and root. They fine folks haven't cracked that nut yet. If I recall correctly, I used the weaksauce/firewater method. This is the guide I used: link. I'm pretty sure my device was on 4.4.2 when I bought it just a few weeks ago, but I'm not 100% certain. In any event, as long as you're not on 4.4.4 you're good.
As for getting to 4.4.4 once s-off, I flashed CleanROM and it's been running like a champ. Any 4.4.4 ROM you flash is going to require a firmware update. Firmwares can be found here.

Here is the sunshine link in case firewater doesn't work. Instructions and how to's are in there I believe.

I feel where the OP is coming from. I've gained root/s-off on 6 different HTC devices to date and just about all of them have some new or different twists from the last. I've found it's best not to make assumptions with an unfamiliar device and to ask clear, concise questions. I'm sure his OP will answer the same question lots of people will have in the coming weeks.

It's just that HTC is new and to me seems a bit more complicated than Samsung. I am used to Samsung and having Odin makes things way easier. But i'll definitely give it a shot, thank you guys.

I've worked on a number of Samsungs. HTC's are a bit more complicated, but I strongly prefer HTC for a number of reasons.

Sunshine now supports HTC One M8 5.0.1 without kingroot

Thought this was big enough to stand on it's own, rather than reply to the multiple threads on this topic. With the release of Version 3.2.1:
Merged Droid Turbo Support into main release
Added new root for Droid Turbo (no more mofo/kingroot needed)
Added new root for Some HTC (like m8, no more htcdev/kingroot needed)
Removed 626s support for now
During the initial run, they now have a "temp root" selection, which eliminates the need for kingroot (i'm assuming). I just s-offed my HTC 5.0.1 version phone without kingroot, so enjoy!

It's probably early still, but can anyone tell me if we still need to downgrade our Lollipop version (S-ON) for this to work? Either way, I already planned to s-off this weekend, if no one else has tried either by then, I'll give it a shot and report back.
Thanks for all your hard work devs!!!

Need Help
I haven't Rooted a phone since my old Droid X. I took the leap, did the S-Off with Sunshine, that went well. Now I'm faltering, been watching all the videos on the Forum and cant see where i'm failing. I installed TWRP manager able to get into HBOOT and Recovery. but whenever I try to run SuperSu it says i'm not Rooted.
Did I skip a step ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You just need to flash supersu.zip in twrp. That installs the binaries needed for supersu app to work.

I saw this the other day, sweet news for us! My M8 is currently in the repair shop for a new USB board, wore out. When it's back I'm doing S-Off and using it over my Note 5. Will report back on how it went, hate being without root on both my Note 4 and Note 5! Stoked! It's Verizon so I couldn't use HTCDev and it killed me.
Yes, been waiting for this for quite a while. I ran sunshine on Christmas day and finally got my HTC One M8 s-off and rooted.
I flashed TWRP then tried out nusense7 which was nice. But I'm now on CM13 nightly builds and they have been great so far. It is nice to have rooted phone again.
So glad I'm a procrastinator too

As for root, if you flash a custom ROM, root will come with the ROM.
If you want to stay on stock you can flash TWRP custom recovery then flash latest stable version of SuperSU in TWRP.
