Sunshine now supports HTC One M8 5.0.1 without kingroot - Verizon HTC One (M8)

Thought this was big enough to stand on it's own, rather than reply to the multiple threads on this topic. With the release of Version 3.2.1:
Merged Droid Turbo Support into main release
Added new root for Droid Turbo (no more mofo/kingroot needed)
Added new root for Some HTC (like m8, no more htcdev/kingroot needed)
Removed 626s support for now
During the initial run, they now have a "temp root" selection, which eliminates the need for kingroot (i'm assuming). I just s-offed my HTC 5.0.1 version phone without kingroot, so enjoy!

Sunshine = S-OFF = permanent root

It's probably early still, but can anyone tell me if we still need to downgrade our Lollipop version (S-ON) for this to work? Either way, I already planned to s-off this weekend, if no one else has tried either by then, I'll give it a shot and report back.
Thanks for all your hard work devs!!!

Need Help
I haven't Rooted a phone since my old Droid X. I took the leap, did the S-Off with Sunshine, that went well. Now I'm faltering, been watching all the videos on the Forum and cant see where i'm failing. I installed TWRP manager able to get into HBOOT and Recovery. but whenever I try to run SuperSu it says i'm not Rooted.
Did I skip a step ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You just need to flash supersu.zip in twrp. That installs the binaries needed for supersu app to work.

I saw this the other day, sweet news for us! My M8 is currently in the repair shop for a new USB board, wore out. When it's back I'm doing S-Off and using it over my Note 5. Will report back on how it went, hate being without root on both my Note 4 and Note 5! Stoked! It's Verizon so I couldn't use HTCDev and it killed me.

Yes, been waiting for this for quite a while. I ran sunshine on Christmas day and finally got my HTC One M8 s-off and rooted.
I flashed TWRP then tried out nusense7 which was nice. But I'm now on CM13 nightly builds and they have been great so far. It is nice to have rooted phone again.

So glad I'm a procrastinator too

Thanks for bringing this up, I just did this weekend but the first try the temp root didn't work and the device rebooted, but try it again if this happens to you as well because the next try it all worked

I wanted to check back in just to be another testimony that it truly does in fact work now!! It was so easy, I tried this about a month ago after I first saw this thread, it didn't take... Prob just needed to try it second time around. So, I got distracted on other things for a while & figured I would give it a shot. Worked perfectly first go round... only thing is I haven't gotten my phone rooted yet (a work in progress) as I said before I get distracted easily

Congrats on freeing your phone. :good:
As for root, if you flash a custom ROM, root will come with the ROM.
If you want to stay on stock you can flash TWRP custom recovery then flash latest stable version of SuperSU in TWRP.

[Q] SuperSU Binary Update

I am rooting my old GS III for my friend I gave it to since I got the note 3 (which i could Root and ROM so bad) and under the Casual One Click method it says to get SuperSU, which I got the Pro version, and it said to update the binary, but there is no option to do so anywhere in the App settings that I see. So I am a lil confused on what to do. I just had to revert back to stock, Cause I flashed CWM without Unlocking the Boot-loader first like a retard, don't know how I forgot that lol Stoner moment I guess. Anyways, can someone elaborate on how I am supposed to update the binary for SuperSU Pro (Latest version).
This is the instructions I've been following http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2332825
I am not new to Rooting or flashing Roms/Kernael, etc etc, But I was stuck with a LG Revo for the last 2years til I finally got a GS4 then a GS3 and now a Note 3. So I am just not up to date on the current methods and what not.
Thanks in advance for any helpful replies

SuperSU automatically updates the binary when you open it. You don't have to worry too much about it as long as you have root access.

Just bought one!

I bought a MyTouch on Amazon for 43 dollars.
Can someone provide a simple guide for me so I can update it to the latest CWM? I've never done any mods with an HTC like this and when I did it was the Hero and I hard bricked it. I had a few G1's, too...
Anyway, can someone PM me or reply to this? I need something quick and easy.
Starting from Rooting and finishishing at CM install.
My current device is an LG Phoenix, so... Big Upgrade!

I would start with this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1801106
It will unlock your bootloader, add CWM, and root your (arriving) phone (in that order). If there are any dead links, I should be able to help out (except for the drivers - you can either try ADBSetup or use Linux to unlock the bootloader).
I would skip Juopunutbear unless you are planning to flash every other week . I did it, it's no big deal, but the best I got out of S-OFF was to change the start-up logo (before the bootanimation).
Hope this gives an idea.

So what if I don't have Admin privileges on a computer? Will Fastboot and ADB still work? I don't know about the drivers...
And I had the original myTouch 3G and I installed the Visionary (the one with the yellow triangle with the lightning bolt hitting a guy) APK file. I was able to flash CWM Recovery after Visionary rooted the device. Is it possible to flash ROMS using CWM instead of unlocking the bootloader?

That would be gaining root through an exploit. If I recall correctly, all of those have been sealed in future OTA's. The only way that makes sense (that is, not trying every rooting package out there) is to unlock the bootloader first. It's really not that bad.

The MT4GS I'm getting is running Gingerbread. If I use GingerBreak APK to root the phone and install CWM, can I still back up the stock OS? And for future reference, how would I keep the baseband once I'm ready to flash ROMs? Like the IMEI and stuff like that?
And the guide that you directed me towards is slightly complicated.
Is there an APK that can turn S-Off? if so, how reliable is it?
And for future reference (I like saying that) the ETA for device delivery is Wednesday on the East Coast of the United States.

Getting out of my comfort zone here, but that should be possible. CWM will be able to back up system and boot, effectively the stock OS.
Haven't heard of people losing their IMEI's with this phone, nor of any backup to protect it, so that should be fine.
When I went through it, I found the guide a bit daunting as well, but you get used to it (alternatively there is below, which I never used).
There is no APK to S-Off (too complicated for a user app, and your phone would be upside down half the time thus making the screen unreadable), but there is this that can speed up the process:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2438884
This can root as well. It's no APK, but should get the job done.

s-off has gotten easier. juopunutbear (or however you spell it) is no longer needed. rumrunner s-off is by far easier to use. this is what I used combined with the windroid program to root.
I bought one from a liquidator online. Brand new, out of the box, with the plastic still on the screen and stuff. Unmarked battery, though. Charges a bit too fast. Was labelled as "refurbished" but came in the original manufacturer box with original PC sync cable and chager. I found a way to root the stock ROM without S-OFF, just with CWM. All I had t do was flash a 2.3.6 ZIP that had the SU binary and the .apk file for the Samsung Galaxy Admire. It works on the really stupid Huawei model, too. Which, I installed the Raspberry Pi variation of SliTaz on it, and it works great! But as soon as I came back to my apartment from work I unlocked the bootloader(HTC model), installed CWM, flashed the ZIP fro 1.4 DS, and then did a backup of my old non-functional broken peice of shi...Yeah, and then then flashed the boot image through fastboot, and then restored my backup. My point is, though, my Minecraft PE and my Ravensword 2 installations diappeared after restoring the backup. Any ideas of why this happened?

Can we get a version for the Moto G?
"Wow apparently this does allow sunshine to s-off and unlock some 4.4.4 Verizon devices, just not our test ones."
I tried weaksauce2 on my brand new Moto G that I bought 2 days ago from the Verizon store and it just failed with an error message saying that the program had unexpectedly stopped. Yes I read the directions saying that the program was for the HTC phones but I decided to try anyway just in case.
Jcase, will the 3.0 version of Sunshine support the Moto G with 4.4.4?
Will Sunshine support the HTC Desire 612?
Verizon has not pushed 5.0 out via OTA for the Moto G - yet - and I'll be continuing to refuse OTA updates until after Sunshine 3 comes out!

HTC Droid DNA rooted and S-off
About a month ago I got a "new" droid from Veri$on as a warranty replacement. My previous one had S-off and root. I had been putting off installing KitKat (didn't want to lose FoxFi). The replacement was KitKat 4.4.2. Sunshine, and Weaksauce didn't work. Neither did any combination of the other tools. I found that weaksauce had a version 2 this morning and tried again. Lo and behold, it worked! Guys, look in your mailbox, another $25 is coming your way. I don't remember the HBoot version before I S-offed, but after S-off it's showing 1.57 and the build version is 4.09.605.5 if that helps at all. This was a new (probably refurbed) never rooted or S-offed as far as I know. I would assume that during refurb they lay down an entirely new image using JTag to make it like new.
S-off 4.4.4 with weaksauce2 and sunshine after a few tries
I do not know if this will help or just another post but I was successful after about 5 tries (I'm stubborn).
I know the first few tries were with Sunshine (that I tried about 2 months ago) a couple of times then deleted and downloaded Sunshine again. Weaksauce2 was able to get me root but the binary wouldn't update (I know, known issue) but after several tried and even doing full powerdown and powerup I was able to get it to work and purchased right then and there and then got the s-off. I couldn't tell you what made it work but something allowed it to finally work and go through even with binaries not updating, but again it took about 5 or so tries.
Brand new m8 running 4.4.4.
Root and s-off with weaksauce 2 and sunshine.
Now shopping for the right rom's to start crack flashing.

Close. You'll have to flash a custom recovery first. If you were already assuming that, then yes. Just flash superuser again and you should be good to go.
I think I understand....I'm not very familiar with custom recovery (even after reading abunch). Once I flash like CWM will it always be there, even after taking an update? Thank u for all this by the way

[Q] Need help flashing custom ROM

Hi Everyone,
As this if my first post just wanted to say that I'm relatively new to customizing my Verizon HTC One M8 and really tried to search around here as well as other places to find answers but I really just wound up getting confused and bogged up in all the different scenarios and things that worked in this version but don't know etc. so apologies if I'm asking a bunch of newbie questions I after a lot of hours I really just couldn't find an up to date comprehensive guide.
So basically I have a Verizon HTC One M8 running Android 4.4.4. and I want to install a custom ROM most likely the DigitalHigh GPE or Skydragon not sure which but regardless I just read a bunch of different guides and started getting frustrated when they didn't work (like going the HTCDev route to realize that that route isn't supported by Verizon or whatever). Currently I have Sunshine installed and am waiting to verify that I can move forward before paying for it.
My question is after I pay for and run sunshine whats the exact route I take to get to where I want to go? I've searched around and found guides but I don't want to be stuck with outdated information that might not work. Thanks a lot for any help you guys can give.

Since you are on 4.4.4 you first have to figure out if Sunshine will work on your phone, it's more recommended for users on 4.4.3 but you can still try as some people have had success. If it doesn't work, it will not charge so you don't have to worry. about paying and it not working.

Hey bud, we'll get you where you need to be. First off, unless it's the 4.4.4 under the Verizon forums, don't flash Skydragon as it is for the GSM version. I would recommend going with DHs, but beware *some* people have issues with data with that ROM. Here's the easiest way to get you where you need to be.
1. Go ahead and get S-off with sunshine. With S-off, you can flash RUUs.
2. Download this RUU and place it on your sd card, or use the executable method, both work flawlessly. Note that this will reset your phone, but you're flashing a ROM anyways. This is rooted. http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...ent/ruu-m8vzw-4-4-4-s-off-onlynewest-t2914914
3. Confirm root and download flashify from the playstore.
4. Flash the recovery of your choice (most, myself included, prefer TWRP)
Now you are rooted with a custom recovery and good to go. If you flash DHs GPE, you will need to update to the 5.0 firmware first for best results. To do this, just place it (https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95832962473400175) on your sd card and boot into hboot by turning off your device, then hold volume down and the power button until it boots into a white screen with multi-colored text. This is hboot. From there, the device should auto detect the firmware on your sd card and press volume up to flash it. Volume up once more to confirm it. To confirm that you are on the new firmware, go back into hboot and check the opendsp number, it should something other than 46.2.2. Delete the firmware from your sd card so hboot doen't keep prompting you to run it every time you boot into hboot. From here, you should be all good to flash DHs ROM. If there is anything else I can help with or you get stuck at any point, let me know and we'll figure it out.

Thanks so much for the detailed explanation! I suppose its worth mentioning that my end goal is to run a ROM that's close to stock Android 5. Certainly don't mind resetting my phone, I have my contacts and whatnot backed up and being my first android phone I have tons of crap I don't need on it anyway. That being said, would you recommend DH's ROM or another one for my needs? Also in step 2, to clarify, once I apply the RUU that will root my phone or will I have to do that with a separate method?
Also @The Stig 04 thanks for the heads up, I ran the test they have and it told me it would work with 4.4.4, certainly reassuring that they'll refund if it doesn't work so appreciate that

No problem buddy! DHs is GPE, so it'll be the closest to stock android that you can get right now, well Google's take on Android anyways. There are a few AOSP roms running around, but I personally have never had an AOSP ROM run in the past year that wasn't ridden with bugs. Plus DHs ROM has an almost completely working Sense camera, which I personally found as a plus since the quality of the 4 ultra pixels on AOSP is almost painful haha. I think another good rom that is actually Sense based but looks and functions a lot like stock Lollipop is Unsense. So step two where you run the RUU will actually redownload and install the same version of OS you have now but it will come rooted and no other further action will be needed to have root access. I found this to be the easiest way to go about it without having to use ADB to install TWRP and flash SU. It takes a few minutes longer since it has to reinstall the OS but is less steps than the ADB route and far easier to explain. Either one will provide the same result, I just prefer the simplicity of running the RUU

Right on, I'll probably stick with DH's ROM. Thanks again, I'm about to hunker down and start this process, lol I'm glad I made the switch but am mildly missing the days where I could just click a few buttons and have a Jailbroken iPhone.

I had an Ipone for about 3 months and never had the guts to modify to because I didn't know how to fix it if I broke it haha. There are a lot of individual steps but the process as a whole should go smoothly. Just follow the threads and you will be fine and if you get snagged on anything or need clarification, just let me know man!

Awesome man! I'm stoked for you, enjoy and no problem!

[Q] Any possible way to Root my Verizon HTC One M8 5.0.1?

I'm having all sorts of troubles trying to find any way to unlock my phone. I know with 4.4, I could TempRoot my phone using Sunshine and then, I could S-Off from there, but now you can't even TempRoot on 5.0. If anybody knows of a way or even knows of a downgrade, that would be awesome.
You need to find one of the guys with a java card. There's a thread about java card holders in the m9 forum. Go check it out and see if there's someone close enough to go visit or mail you phone to.
You don't need a java card

Downgrade, temp root with Kingroot, Sunshine, profit

Keep trying it, it took me several tries, also I think I may have used the desktop version of kingroot.

It's a PIA to make root stick for Sunshine with King Root but it works. Search the Sunshine thread, people posted what worked for them.
I, too, can confirm Kingroot worked for me on 5.0.1. It is a pain. Just be persistent until it finally works.
I believe BAttitude7689 was successful with rooting his phone (read in another thread)
So I downgraded to whatever that link had. Kingroot ran one time, unsuccessfully, and now gets stuck at "verify root status." I've tried rebooting, reinstalling the app, everything.
Verify root status.... over and over and over.
Uninstall, reinstall kingroot and try again. I literally had to repeat the process nearly a day and a half to finally get it to the point where Sunshine would complete (and got TWRP to install).
I was lucky that my second M8 was a leftover in-store (not a replacement from service center) came with KitKat and I immediately ran Sunshine. But on a friend's replacement from service, it came with 5.0.1 and I had to do the dance. Dottat was thoughtful enough to give us the stagefright downgrader that enables Kingroot to run at all, but it's not a perfect science.
You also have the option to ship the phone to the sunshine devs & they will happily soff your phone. They have a way with 5.0.1, but its not stable for release
Took me about 3 hours last night with a bit of trial and error since every time my phone rebooted I had to Kingroot all over again but eventually for some reason it wound up working. I didn't RUU or flash TWRP until after Sunshine confirmed that I was s-off. Also, try different versions of Kingroot, I played with a few different ones and different SU apks as well.

Yup same here. It took me a like 6 or 8 tries. I also used Sunshine for the next level s-0ff! I was able to install the custom teamwin recovery with flashify too. Custom roms here I go.
Can confirm it works, I rooted 5.0.1 this way as well, and just to chime in with everyone else, it is a pain in the ass, but plenty worth it.
Did anyone else have the problem where the phone rebooted after a successful root? I need to use sunshine to s-off but phone keeps rebooting after a random amount of time. Somewhere between 5 seconds to a minute

Sorry I should've read the whole conversation before posting
A new version of sunshine was just released about one or two hours ago. Here is the newest entry in the changelog: Version 3.2.1
Merged Droid Turbo Support into main release
Added new root for Droid Turbo (no more mofo/kingroot needed)
Added new root for Some HTC (like m8, no more htcdev/kingroot needed)
Removed 626s support for now*
Sunshine now works without kingroot
I had been checking the threads every couple weeks for the last few months waiting for Sunshine to get updated to work with Lollipop. As soon as I saw that an update was available and that someone had used it successfully I ran it and it worked great. It is nice to have a rooted phone again. :good:
