i was having several issues with my HD on 4.1.2 from sluggish performance to SMS and other things just not working right. i did a factory reset and it did not fix the problem. i could clear a bunch of cache and then reboot and it would run OK for a bit but then start to act up again.
i decided to do a full SBF to see if it made a difference and it made a HUGE difference.
i know root is gone but i prefer a fast and proper phone over root and the SBF was like getting a new device.
i did not restore from anything and manually added back everything after the SBF.
if anyone else decides to go this route it would be great to hear your experience to see if it works as well for you. i already had another HD that was SBF'd and it also benefited from the process and runs much better.
hope this helps someone

I was wondering about this. Anyone know if just flashing the system.img file does the same thing?
i used the 4.1.2 located here.

I did the same thing, & I'm so impressed with the way 4.1.2 runs, other than losing root. My battery performance has skyrocketed ((I'm now at 60 hours (2.5 days), 5 hrs. screen time, and 60% battery charge remaining. Everything is fluid & smooth & fast, every bit as fast as any of the custom roms I tried in the past. I don't know what tweaks Motorola added, but they certainly worked for me! It's a bit of consolation for me, even though I'm grieving the loss of some of my favorite root apps. So I agree - HUGE difference.

Do you have a MAXX HD? Cuz I have 4.1.2 rooted on my regular HD and I get nowhere near this type of battery life. Also, did you just use RSD Lite to flash? ...And what version?
i have regular HD and used the SBF file i linked to a few post up with RSD 6.1.4 and my battery is much better. right now i am 14 hours off charger with 72% remaining.
i can use this in my razor hd 925?

I own the Razr Maxx HD, and yes, I used RSD Lite to flash, v. 6.1.4, along with Matt's fastboot file. I am just blown away by the battery performance on this 4.1.2 update, & I was not exaggerating the numbers in my prior post, I continue to get similar stats consistently. I may even forget about ever rooting again! Everything is rock solid with the performance, haven't had a single FC or issue with any app.
Can someone please give directions on how exactly to do this? I am fed up with the phone's performance and want to try this. Thank you in advance.
Well, I tried flashing and it failed. Most likely I'm doing something wrong. I went into AP fastboot and connected my Razr HD, then hit flash after selecting the file. Status says: "Failed flashing process. Unknown fastboot command. (getvar)"
Do I need to uninstall safestrap and/or superuser first?

Nevermind. I forgot to delete the two lines with "getvar" in the xml file. It's flashing now.

SBF'd 4.1.2 is now operational
Will report back on the so-called increased battery life findings. I'm skeptical, but I have very consistent usage pattern at work so I should notice the difference. I'll know after Tuesday.

I doubt it because the 925 and 926 have different radios and the SBF is for Verizon phones (926). I'm sure someone will be able to confirm, though...

yeah i thought more people would be jumping in here because it is such a huge improvement but with no root i guess some would rather update then start fresh.
i preferred performance over root and i tried sever times starting over with ICS to get 4.1.2 with root to run like this and it just doesnt.

It's still not confirmed if the bootloader is unlocked but so far it seems like it's not. I'm still waiting to flash this as I want to be sure I can SBF back to Froyo if there are any issues.
It has been confirmed that flashing back to Froyo with the SBF after running the leaked GB update.zip is successful so there should be no issues trying out this update.
Great! I'll probably give this a try tonight once I get home. Also, regarding the original question, it's also been determined that the bootloader is NOT unlocked. Once we're able to root it (I don't think it'll take too long for someone to come up with a way to do it) I'll be happy.
TBH will have a rooted update.zip available very soon for this release...just need to finish tweaking the file and testing it.
And no, it doesn't unlock the bootloader...that was rabid speculation.

This is no improvement over the amount of hacking we've had so far. It's a new version of the same stuff. We won't get an unlocked bootloader, no new radios or anything like that.

i guess u right. some of the posts though ,on d2g forums, gave a reason to believe that this might take us a step forward to b able unlocking it.
The update has a radio image in it. Can somebody who installed it say what radio version says?
So I noticed after flashing this build that the device encryption does not work .. Have not tried to encrypt the sd card but it keeps telling me device does not have enough memory and that I should clear some space by removing apps and there data. It says this even after a factory reset so I dunno. First known bug of this release I guess.
I installed GB on my Droid 2 Global and it's working great. The interface feels MUCH faster now, great audio quality, certain things like Manage Applications don't hang anymore, cool transition effects like when you slide the keyboard or switch back to the launcher... overall this thing is just AWESOME.

is there any improvement on the battery life?
running it stock on leaked GB
Battery life appears to be better to me but I haven't had had it for even a full day yet so my opinion might not be the most accurate, however, there are others that have also reported improved battery life. Nothing revolutionary but it does seem to be a bit better.
Okay... now that I have everyone's attention...
Here is the deal... in between a series of insane work trips my Mom comes over and says she just bought a new One X, and can I set it up for her.
I am pretty comfortable with this stuff, or at least following directions , but I am seriously pressed for time.
I started reading last night and think I have a pretty good handle on what and where, but want to confirm I am on the right path...
Phone is currently on 4.0.3 with version 1.85.502.3
I have zero plans to load custom ROMs on this since all my Mom needs is stability, but I want to root so that I can get in TiBu, clean out the bloat, setup a backup schedule and so on.
I have read a couple of comments that the 2.2 software gives better battery life and a few other improvements, so would not mind putting that on.
I have not gotten any OTA update notifications since I turned the phone on.
What is my best path?
Can I simply root the device using these instructions http://briefmobile.com/how-to-root-htc-one-x-att and then install the rooted stock 2.2 here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1812459

Believe me man you would want to how much bloat and crap that att throws on the phone. Might as well give her something worth having the rom is very stable and would never have to fix it for her.
Also after you install TWRP for her (the recovery) Make sure to make a nano backup of her stock image then flash with CleanROM and make one of that to. So if she ever has a issue she is just one click away from a new phone.:good:

I think the problem is that if you're going to root anyway, you've already made it so she can't stay current on the "official" path.
I've found CleanROM to be far more stable than AT&T's PoS.

+1000.
You'll never know it isn't stock sense/att except that all the apps which, if she clicks them she'll get charged additional usage for, are gone.
FWIW, ATT's OTA isn't anything special. My phone was three months old and was still running 1.73. Never succeeded in an OTA update.
So, CleanROM 4.5 was a huge improvement.
I would say that, if she is not totally interested in Modding, that she should either leave it with all stock ,or switch to CleanROM. I am running CleanROM because I like the stock feel, although I have modded a few things. I also liked the removale of bloatware. I feel that the best place for rooting your One X is on onexroot.com. just make sure you choose the right ROM and root method depending on your model, such as international AT&T, or Rodgers. Hope this helps!

2.20 breaks root if you go with the stock RUU. So you are going to be unlocking the bootloader and going off the "official" path anyway. Which means you will have to periodically update your mother's phone anyways and she will software warranty.
I would go with one of three options:
1. Root/Unlock and flash CleanROM 4.5 (you will have to update her phone every so often and she loses software warranty)
2. Root, stay with 1.85 and de-bloat (don't really recommended because of multitask issue)
3. Don't root, leave phone stock and stay on the official path (if you don't have the time to maintain your mother's phone go with this)
Actually, if you root &unlock bootloader now, flash a custom recovery, you can manually update the firmware to 2.2x, flash back your stock recovery and relock it you have a fully updated, stock device that you can always go back and unlock if u want to later.

True that for root on 2.20, you will need to unlock the bootloader anyway, so you may as well go ahead and root, SuperCID and unlock bootloader.
A 4th option would be to flash a stock rooted 2.20, 2.23, or 2.29 ROM (after unlocking the bootloader). Honestly, the 2.2X stock ROMs are quite good, and you won't really need to update the phone much after that; really mostly if you just want to.
Personally, I would suggest either leaving as-is on 1.85, and root and debloat; or unlock the bootloader and flash either a rooted stock 2.2X ROM, or custom ROM that does not divert too much from stock 2.2X (like CleanROM).
Updating to 2.20 the "official" way is just robbing yourself of any other options, until (if and when) a root method is found for 2.20. Personally recommend you stay away from that.

Custom ROMs have a huge variation in their stability. Sure, ROMs which are AOSP have some things broken, and ones based on the leading edge (Jellybean) have issues too, since they are ports, do not fully support our hardware, etc.
But many of the ROMs you will see in Development are based stock ROMs, with bloat removed, performance tweaks, and some features added, without any real drastic changes. CleanROM, King Cobra among others actually run smoother and more stable than stock. Don't knock all custom ROMs, especially since you haven't even tried any on this device.
CleanROM 4.5 is better than stock. It's the best rom I have ever flashed on any device ever.

You could flash in an ICS factory image using the built-in recovery (or at least I seem to remember doing something like it). But before anything, you need to know which variant of the phone you're dealing with (i9020a/i9020t/i9023/etc.) Just turn off the phone and check below the battery for the exact model. Once you have that, I (or somebody else around here) can link you to the right image for the device.

Oh, there seem to be no full recovery-flashable images for the NS4G. You could install a full image using fastboot but that would require unlocking your phone's bootloader (which more or less voids any warranty) and would also wipe all the data. If you're not particularly attached to all the data in the phone, you could try a factory reset to see if JB problems get resolved. Otherwise, maybe some other forum member might have a better idea.
OK, thank you. I'm about to go to sleep, and I'll ask her in the morning how she feels about the phone being wiped. In the meantime, maybe others can shed some info also. Again, thanks for the replies.
My wife and I both have the NS4g from Sprint, but our approach as to how we use the device is very different. She doesn't like change, simply wants the parts of the system that she uses, to work ... mainly tethering, mms, camera, phone. If your wife is anything like mine ... make your life a little easier, and just root the phone. It will give you so much more flexibility and choices. About a week ago, OMJ posted a stock, rooted rom in the NS4g development thread that would be perfect for her. It's all there ... smooth ... quick ... everything works.
i think before trying anything that could avoid your warranty you should do a factory reset ... it probably could solve all your wife issues ... it will just delete all your app but not photo or documents ( unless you select that option ) and you could after reinstall just the really needed apps your wife need ...
@wmdunn - She mainly uses her camera as well.
@kriout - doing a factory reset will still give her back JB tho wouldn't it? I'll ask her just to try it, and if it still runs slow, I guess root it?

The camera software in JB is really nice. As for rooting ... I have rooted every phone we've owned, and never had any problem with warranty issues. The rooted versions of the stock JB rom are smoother and quicker than the ota.

I think the Rogers/Fido Jelly Bean OTA update broke the recovery. Your best bet is to flash the stock firmware using RSD Lite.
Here is the post to find the stock firmware based on your location:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2032284
Here is the post on how to flash that stock firmware:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2176753
I'd avoid doing a factory reset even after flashing the stock firmware. If the is running slow, try disabling some apps.
Root for 4.1.2 is available here:

With a rooted phone, you can freeze some systems apps using Titanium Backup. Here is a post that lists all apps that can be safely frozen.

Just a word of caution. Before doing anything listed above, make sure to read and re-read everything. I'm not responsible for anything that happens to your phone.
Hope this helps.
thank you

thanks you for the help and im sorry for the late reply its been pretty crazy at work im going to try this tonight and hopefully it all goes well once again i really appreciate the help
no good
i attempted to flash the phone but i kept getting a failed flash i took a screen shot of the RSD LITE ive read everything over and over and im not sure whats happened tempted to just break the phone and move on lol
What's up,
So here is the deal,
For whatever reason, RSD lite does not like the <get var> command in the XML file you used to flash the stock rom. You have two options:
1) Open the XML file in notepad and remove any lines with a tag labeled <get var> (I think there's two in there)
Or...
2) Download a utility like Matt's or my own, which does the work for you. In mine for example, you go into fast boot mode on your phone, and press two buttons in the utility, and presto!
You're gonna need to do some exploration to find the threads with the utilities in them, I can't provide links since I'm on my mobile, but generally look in the "Razr HD Original Android Development", you should find a couple.
Cheers!

Look at Mr. Parkinson's reply. Step (1) is your best option. That's exactly what I did. There are two <getvar> lines. Delete those and you should be good,

Title says it all, trying to restore a nandroid of cleanrom1.1 with hk mod and art and it has been on restoring data for about 20 mins. Any suggestion? Pretty terrified to leave recovery without a removable battery
Anybody up? A booting phone would come in handy tomorrow. After trying to install gpe with some troubles, I decided I wanted to go back to cleanrom with a backup. The restore has been stuck on restoring data for a while. The system successfully restored, so I want to know a few things.
Can I leave recovery while stuck at the restore screen?
Can my system boot with just a restored system not data?
Can I somehow get out and back into recovery to clean install cleanrom?
I think I got it. Held power and vol up followed by power down and got into recovery again eventually, flashed per usual and its optimizing apps right now. Phew. On the bright side I'm entirely de sensitized with this phone after this brief heart attack
The latest TWRP is known to not restore Nandroids on this phone. Surprised you got it to work. Nowadays I don't Nandroid at all, I just use Titanium Backup. I know that method isn't perfect, but with Nandroid broken, it's what I got.
Like you discovered, devices with no removable battery have a virtual battery pull function that works independently of the phone's other functions. It's kind of like a kill switch.
It's always fun dealing with these issues, isn't it? Samsung phones, for all their faults, are pretty damn easy to work with. HTC... I'm finding, not so much, though when they do have a good ROM in them, they are some of the best phones out there.
Lastly, you're three versions out on CleanROM as of yesterday. I'm using 1.3 and once I get my USB cable, I'm updating to 1.4. H/K is a must.

Yes, I've heard; thank you.
I wonder if TWRP has abandoned the M8. Or maybe they're waiting on something (4.4.3 update?). I don't know.
130 seconds? When I was on the Galaxy S3 250-300 seconds backups/restores were common. I get that we have two more cores, but has disk write speed really gotten that much better? Depending on your ROM, you're writing 1-3GB to the SD card, and other disk operations are happening as well. I've had a few rogue 2 minute restores, but I expect closer to 4. Then again maybe you have a leaner setup. I'm strictly Sense only as long as H/K is. No H/K in AOSP means no AOSP for me until that changes.

Here is one I just made 5 mins ago just to show you. I backed up sense ROM 3.4 gigs as you can see an there is the 130 second backup. Check out the pic...also I restore it at 93 seconds but rebooted out of habit before I could take my pic of that lol....he did add his own kernel maybe that is what made it faster. Who knows but like I said I'm in the 130 range every time.....
Hello! I downloaded the recovery posted by buckmarble, currently using twrp. Earlier I thought I saw a thread explaining how to switch recoveries (easily) Now I can't find it anywhere, of course, right? Do u or anyone else know where I can get this info?
Thanks in Advance

Over the last few HTC phones on Vzw seems not to get any love from official twrp builds. I have been using one someone else built. Like on m7 santod's twrp was way better an stable an now buck's is hands down the best on m8. Maybe they don't like Vzw. Lol
I believe this is what I have been using since back when I got ny m8.. No issues to speak of.. In fact, this is the first time I heard of any

One huge problem is twrp don't have the partitions map right so if you r one of those users that use apps or the terminal emulator then you have just flashed twrp to your system partition an then your phone no longer boots to OS.. Which isn't the case on bucks build.. Myself I only fastboot so this isn't a issue but I have helped many m8 owners that ran into this. That's just for starters.

Ok, as of this moment, I have Buck-TWRP-v2.7.1.0 installed, just backed up my RoM, 3 partitions/4235mb=681seconds or just over 11.5minutes to create backup.

You use compression ? Or did you generate md5 or something.
Compression-yes no-md5
Is compression really not necessary?

NThat's why it takes so long. How long did it take on the other twrp with compression? I don't use that feature is why mine dont take that long..
I don't see the point behind using compression. Never have never will.
