twrp restoring data for quite some time now - Verizon HTC One (M8)

Title says it all, trying to restore a nandroid of cleanrom1.1 with hk mod and art and it has been on restoring data for about 20 mins. Any suggestion? Pretty terrified to leave recovery without a removable battery

Anybody up? A booting phone would come in handy tomorrow. After trying to install gpe with some troubles, I decided I wanted to go back to cleanrom with a backup. The restore has been stuck on restoring data for a while. The system successfully restored, so I want to know a few things.
Can I leave recovery while stuck at the restore screen?
Can my system boot with just a restored system not data?
Can I somehow get out and back into recovery to clean install cleanrom?

I think I got it. Held power and vol up followed by power down and got into recovery again eventually, flashed per usual and its optimizing apps right now. Phew. On the bright side I'm entirely de sensitized with this phone after this brief heart attack

The latest TWRP is known to not restore Nandroids on this phone. Surprised you got it to work. Nowadays I don't Nandroid at all, I just use Titanium Backup. I know that method isn't perfect, but with Nandroid broken, it's what I got.
Like you discovered, devices with no removable battery have a virtual battery pull function that works independently of the phone's other functions. It's kind of like a kill switch.
It's always fun dealing with these issues, isn't it? Samsung phones, for all their faults, are pretty damn easy to work with. HTC... I'm finding, not so much, though when they do have a good ROM in them, they are some of the best phones out there.
Lastly, you're three versions out on CleanROM as of yesterday. I'm using 1.3 and once I get my USB cable, I'm updating to 1.4. H/K is a must.

Yes, I've heard; thank you.
I wonder if TWRP has abandoned the M8. Or maybe they're waiting on something (4.4.3 update?). I don't know.
130 seconds? When I was on the Galaxy S3 250-300 seconds backups/restores were common. I get that we have two more cores, but has disk write speed really gotten that much better? Depending on your ROM, you're writing 1-3GB to the SD card, and other disk operations are happening as well. I've had a few rogue 2 minute restores, but I expect closer to 4. Then again maybe you have a leaner setup. I'm strictly Sense only as long as H/K is. No H/K in AOSP means no AOSP for me until that changes.

Here is one I just made 5 mins ago just to show you. I backed up sense ROM 3.4 gigs as you can see an there is the 130 second backup. Check out the pic...also I restore it at 93 seconds but rebooted out of habit before I could take my pic of that lol....he did add his own kernel maybe that is what made it faster. Who knows but like I said I'm in the 130 range every time.....

Hello! I downloaded the recovery posted by buckmarble, currently using twrp. Earlier I thought I saw a thread explaining how to switch recoveries (easily) Now I can't find it anywhere, of course, right? Do u or anyone else know where I can get this info?
Thanks in Advance

Over the last few HTC phones on Vzw seems not to get any love from official twrp builds. I have been using one someone else built. Like on m7 santod's twrp was way better an stable an now buck's is hands down the best on m8. Maybe they don't like Vzw. Lol

I believe this is what I have been using since back when I got ny m8.. No issues to speak of.. In fact, this is the first time I heard of any

One huge problem is twrp don't have the partitions map right so if you r one of those users that use apps or the terminal emulator then you have just flashed twrp to your system partition an then your phone no longer boots to OS.. Which isn't the case on bucks build.. Myself I only fastboot so this isn't a issue but I have helped many m8 owners that ran into this. That's just for starters.

NThat's why it takes so long. How long did it take on the other twrp with compression? I don't use that feature is why mine dont take that long..
I don't see the point behind using compression. Never have never will.

[FIX] Flashed Wrong Recovery image

Alright, so we all know it's confusing to differentiate the One XL from the One X, especially since Rogers and AT&T insist on calling it the One X.
IF YOU HAVE A "ONE X" FROM ROGERS/AT&T, YOU HAVE THE ONE XL. DON'T EVEN BOTHER VISITING THE ONE X FORUMS.
Now, you've gone and downloaded CWM from the One X forums and flashed it to your One XL, and you're semi-bricked. Let's get you out of that pickle. Please note that I have not done any of this to my own One XL, as there's no ROMs or custom recovery images or kernels for our phone yet. However, just this morning I performed a similar operation on my Jetstream, and the steps will be identical. I take no responsibility for any problems you experience.
First, you'll need to download the leaked RUU that can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1550930
EDIT: designgears has offered a newer recovery image. I'm not sure what advantages it would bring, but at least there's a second option: http://www.gigashare.in/53885
Please note that this is marked as the AT&T RUU, so there's no guarantee this will work for Rogers. However, your recovery mode is screwed anyway, so in my opinion, it couldn't hurt to try.
Once you've downloaded the RUU, run it. You don't need to install the RUU itself, we just have to have the application running. Once running, it'll create a "rom.zip" file in a temp folder somewhere in your user profile. While the RUU is open, just search for "rom.zip" and you should find it. Open this file and extract "recovery_signed.img" to your computer, into the same folder as your "fastboot" application. Once you've done this, close the zip file and exit the RUU.
Now, boot your device into fastboot mode
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
Once in bootloader mode, you may need to select "fastboot" from the menu.
Now that you're in fastboot mode, you can flash the recovery we extracted from the RUU:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery_signed.img
Your screen will go through a couple brief steps, something like "sending recovery_signed.img" then "writing recovery_signed.img" and then "OK."
Try to boot into recovery now, and you should see the standard HTC recovery mode!
I really hope this helps everyone out. I'll iterate again that I have no tried this with my One XL, so I have no actual proof that this will work. But, if you've already flashed the wrong recovery image, you should be somewhat familiar with these steps already.
EDIT: Please post your success with this method. As I haven't tested, I'd like to know if everything's kosher, and I can change the instructions accordingly if something's wrong.
Hey, sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, went to bed.
Here is just the recovery image for a newer, unreleased leak.

It's AT&T recovery.
Flashed but still having trouble. Got into recovery but can't boot.
Going to see if re-locking the bootloader may help. Only thing different I've done is that I ran that flash_boot.zip thing that Leedroid had on his page. It just seems to push a boot.img file and clear the fastboot cache.
Does anyone have that particular boot.img file? Pretty please?
For myself I will leave it for now and wait until an official rogers RUU or custom recovery to make sure I don't break it again

The rom.zip file from the AT&T ruu should have the boot.img file in it. you can flash it with
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
However, the boot partition is a WEE bit more critical to the phone's function than the recovery partition. Dunno if I'd be flashing it myself, at least not to a Rogers phone.

Thanks, man. Someone said they flashed the entire RUU to their Rogers phone so I don't think it could be too harmful.
I only have my Ubuntu machine and Wine is being fussy and not extracting the rom.zip archive properly. I'll see if something gets released soon. I rarely see Rogers RUU so hopefully I'm not waiting too long. Reactivated my SIM for my Galaxy Nexus but still sad lol

I've been in the same boat brother, minus flashing the boot.img file. Did you end up resolving/unbricking your XL? If not, I can extract the boot.img from my Rogers phone if that would help.
Btw, I haven't been on the forums in a couple of days, but I caught wind of your predicament and I'm surprised at the trouble you've had recently asking for help in this matter. Some people are ridiculous!
Truth is, we have this pretty new device that we want to take advantage of! We got excited, and f'd up. Anyhow, let me know if I can help.

Ok, I'm in the middle of downloading the evita leaked files. I can't extract it from my phone since I need root... unless you know a way other than adb shell? Either way, I don't think you can access it without root. I've tried a few ways with no luck.
I see you can't access the evita files so the best I can do for you is extract it from there for you. Download is slow as hell, so bear with me!

Krepler, Can you tell me how did you solve your recovery? I am in your sisutation as well, flash the wrong recovery and once I boot to recovery and it will occur the boot loop, however I am still able to use the One X (Semi-bricked). Did you flash the stock recovery from Rogers or the one that you just posted from AT&T?

One does not interfere with the other. Recovery is pretty much its own operating system, completely segregated from the rest of the phone. It can neither hinder nor enhance the booting of your phone in normal mode. You could theoretically flash a random sequence of ones and zeros to the recovery partition, and the phone would continue to boot just fine. Until you try and go into recovery mode that is. Flashing the recovery_signed.img as per my instructions is safe in regards to the phone's normal operation. I can't promise that it's a working recovery, however, as I've not tried it myself.
Awesome! Just booted up, my man. A thousand fellatios to you!! Please message me your Paypal address so I can buy you a beer or two.
Haven't tried the Cingular ones but the AT&T ones worked just fine. I'm betting it'll be damn near identical, save probably a few radio adjustments or very minor adjustments.
Booted to the main screen so I should be able to set things up. But I'll chime in and report if there are any major issues. Thanks again!!

Have you tried running "fastboot erase cache"?
What other steps have you done as well? The killer for me was the boot.img file that Leedroid created as part of his ROM installation. The AT&T recovery is what I had used. For a moment I thought I might need to try flashing the system.img file like redwreck had to, but I didn't need to.
Perhaps someone could upload that as well, please? If you need to flash that, it's "fastboot flash system system.img" and it'll flash that too. I always do "fastboot reboot" after as well.
I trust that these should work. Hopefully there'll be a full Rogers RUU so we can flash that just to be on the safe side. Best of luck! I'll keep an eye on this thread as well.
Since I posted earlier I've been setting things up and it's working like a damn charm. Tried exhausting every weird and quirky feature I thought might screw up, but I can't find anything that's not working.

att one x wont let me flash rom..

Ok guys, so Ive rooted using the 1.85 method and unlocked my bootloader using the spoof cid and htcdev.com method. TWRP 2.2 installed, and thats about it.. downloaded CleanROM4.5, on PC moved to phone and rebooted into recovery, went to install and just comes up " Failed".. Tried twice and nothing. Got freaked out and even went and accpeted the OTA 2.2 att update, once I hit install it just reboots into TWRP and Thats it, from there i can reboot and what not and the phone functions fine a well, it just wont flash anything.. I guess maybe Im missing something..? Im not a complete noob, you could say i am a flashaholic with my HTC Inspire 4g so i dunno whats going on here. any help is appreciated..
recap
phone is currently rooted stock 1.85
Bootloader unlocked
S-on
wont let me flash, i dont get it...
If you downloaded from chrome that could be your problem, it messes up the ROMs. Happened to me as well..lol Try firefox, it works perfect
sinco54 did you :
Copy ROM to storage
Reboot to Recovery
Recommend wiping data / Factory Reset in Recovery!
Install ROM and Aroma installer will start.
Choose Standard or Lite Edition
Let install complete
Reboot to System
Profit!
I copied that from the first post of : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1655011
Before I wiped anything I made a backup of my 1.85 setup.
Not trying to incite you but I'm on my first android phone and it worked perfectly for me last week.
I used chromium on my pc to download the zip then transfer it to the phone, are you and SkookDroid talking about downloading the zip directly to the 1X? That would be weird if that was why it didn't work.
I tried the CM10 8/9 alpha today and had to change back to cleanrom 4.5 because the call quality was messed up. First I wiped cache and davlik cache with TWRP then restored my 1.85 backup. It said everything was ok but on restart it hung on the white 1X screen until 5min later I restarted and the restore finally took.
Good Luck with it.

Copy ROM to storage
Reboot to Recovery
Recommend wiping data / Factory Reset in Recovery!
Install ROM and Aroma installer will start.
Choose Standard or Lite Edition
Let install complete
Reboot to System
Profit!
I copied that from the first post of : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1655011

The install instantly fails due to a bad download, thats why I said to use a different browser to download the ROM from the pc then move it to the phone and flash it lol
yuup, back up done, wiped dalvik and cache, fatory reset blahblahblahblah.. instantly fails.. Im downloading via mozilla right now but, gonna give that a while once that finishes up and see what happens.. and thats why im confused, it should work JUST FINE cause ive done this 8 million times but ive gotta be missing something obviously cause it should work.. the funy part is that the phone wont even let the OTA 2.2 from att install, it just goes directly to twrp and thats it.. thats where i get lost, i cant flash from twrp and the OTA will just boot directly into twrp so its like ive missed something somewhere.. Ill update here in a few minutes once i try again with a new download via mozilla.. thanks guys and sit tight..

No. Instead, people blame browsers for not completing downloads. It takes 15 seconds at the most to check MD5 sum and it can save hours of headache.

I was giving my opinion because chrome has given me problems before. Sorry we cant all be super devs like you, oh wait...
I wasn't trying to be sarcastic It's just that coming from the aria forum it was almost like written in stone (attn1) always check md5 before flashing anything. It's just a really easy way to make sure your not about to flash something that could potentially Bork your phone.

Depends on the devs. Some forums make things very noob friendly (like the HOX). Very convenient and nice of the devs, but when people don't even know what fastboot and ADB is, it causes a lot of grief for the devs. Just look at what happened with the scandal that almost deterred Scott from producing HOX roms. It's fine being new to the scene, but there are too many people who don't even care enough to read instructions.
Even some of the ROM developers themselves said the same thing about chrome, but since your the smartest guy around and no ones opinion matters but yours they're wrong too right? I've been here for a month, youve been here for two years. Im new to the scene and still learning, its people like you that deter newcomers from asking questions and participating in this site. Im not here to argue with you, im here to try to help out fellow users(WHICH I DID) so have a good day, sir.
yeah my bad entirely, i had assumed that because i was downloading from scott directly and not like media share or some mirror download that the md5 needed to be checked. but that still doesnt explain why 2 downloads via chrome were not good and 1 download via firefox is ok.. i dont know, but its interesting to me.. I didnt claim to be mr know it all, nor do i think i am at this stuff but your shamless sarcastic stab wether to be taken like that or not sounds like it..
I do understand this site has grown exponentially and many of the original guys are just disgusted with newbs like myself but ill tell you i do appreciate all the help ive been able to search for over the last 3-4 years as a lurker and finally registered a few months back.. I hate internet forums for this exact reason.. wether skookie was correct or incorrect he helped me and he deserves an 8 ball of the finest coke and 2 hookers for it. cheers!!
I want you to know that I try to help everyone I can and even have taken **** from some other members for not letting some members with redundant questions figure somethings on there own. As far as the downloads go I'm nit going to take sides because I've seen people report the same thing that one browser works while another doesn't. But my point still is what ever your using to download or where its being downloaded from there is always a chance that it can get corrupted or be incomplete so a quick md5 check just ensures a safe flash.

[Q] trouble flashing PG59IMG.zip

I've been running CM9 for a few weeks now, but have decided that I want to get S-Off and open the phone's capability up some more... Anyway, I'm on a MT4GS:
HBOOT 1.45.0013
Nov 21 2011 build
Tried flashing this https://www.cx.com/mycx/share/O2W61....00_11.16.3504.20_2_release_245247_signed.zip
from weekendsr2short's mirror page (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1878329) of Blue6ix's stuff...(i tried autoflashing from the bootload/fastboot screen)
anyway, it loads up like it is going to actaully flash, but nothing changes on the Bootloader screen. The phone is unlocked via HTC's tool and is rooted. Any help is greatly appreciated! Please lemme know if any more info is needed.

OK, that's what I was hoping to do. I noticed in the JB instructions that it said I must be a stock RUU not a custom ROM or something to that effect. I am on CWM 5.Something so a rom flash is NP. Any recommended ROMs? I.e One that worked for you? I tried the wire trick about 100 times over the course of an hour or so(on cm9.1), but then reread the bit shout the rom again.
Thanks for all the responses so far!
Any stock based ROM will do. I went with MikTouch myself and it worked like a charm! (on the 4th try so be patient....)

yeah, Ive been running root since my MT3G way back when...couldnt stand how laggy that thing was with all the bloat... wasnt even that great with CM6 but still night and day better than stock (=hooked on rooting). then upgraded to the MT4g and now this thing... was fairly concerned about all the extra hoops but wouldve just chosen another platform had I borked it...glad I didnt, saved me some funds!
On a related note, what radios are you guys running? Are there any issues between the GB radios and ICS ones? Im assuming so, but with the custom ROMs/kernels anything should be able to be overcome I'm hoping... I know I def. had issues on CM7 -> CM9 on the reg. 4G when swapping radios...
I don't generally swap my radios around since there are only two that I'm aware of. But I DID find that the new one (when I replaced my phone) seemed to lock a signal a bit quicker but for me the original radio gets MUCH better phone reception. Depends on your phone I suppose.
(you'll be glad you went with this phone though. basically a Sensation with a keyboard)

cool, I just flashed the older one today... been having really crappy recption on campus lately (esp. since switching from the MT4G) better reception is what I'd rather have... ill give this one a week or so and see if I think its any better... I like the phone a lot already... i still use the soft keyboard from time to time as I forget the other one is there, but it comes in really handy on certain sites...
Hello guys, I've been lurking the forums for hours trying to find a thread with an issue close to mine, and this is the closest I got. I followed all the necessary steps on the first page, but the problem I'm having is when I try to flash the PG59IMG.zip file, it says "Loading... PG59IMG.zip", but then it says "Checking....PG59IMG.zip" and afterwards it says "Wrong zipped image!" Any ideas what it could mean? I just want to get it back to stock. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the link. It said I need to relock the phone in order to flash the image, but when i type "fastboot oem lock" into command prompt, I get a message saying 'fastboot' is not recognized as an internal or external command, inoperable program or batch file." I'm guessing this means my fastboot wasn't set up correctly, but I don't know where to go from here. As always, thanks again for any help or advice.

Bricked HTC One X

Hey guys.....
I tried flashing IceColdJelly on my HTC One X ATT and i was rushing and i just remembered a notice before i rebooted the phone that it says there was no OS something something to this rom and i clicked OK and it attempted to reboot. Now its not turning on at all. Cannot get into download mode or ANYTHING. Don't tell me to try pressing any more buttons because i've been doing that for the past 3 hours. I know my way around phones and this is my biggest problem i've ever faced. I put in the phone to the computer and it recognizes it but has 3 beeps after basically cannot do anything to the phone. I have TWRP recovery on it btw. Basically, its a paperweight. Cannot turn on a single freaking thing. Please help. I cannot thank you guys enough if you can help in any way....

Taking the time to research before flashing a ROM that is not even meant for your phone would have saved a lot of heartache:

I have downgraded using JET from 1.14 to 2.20. Process includes bricking your phone to get into special recovery mode that give RW access to hboot, but you do need TWRP at some point I think (not sure though) to get in bricked, before you start downgrade, so you might not be able to downgrade.
However, I don't think you are SOL. Look into manual steps of downgrading here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32761598&postcount=107
OP gives you there way to verify that device is connected and part of the steps is listing partitions. If you can get partitions listed on your PC, then I think you can just dd system image and it should come back to life... also have you tried 2.20 RUU? I had a corrupted system partition (bad sector causing reboot when I would try to access system - including booting phone or into twrp recovery). I ended up using RUU (which also failed from the same bug, but It actually reformatted my system partition giving me access to twrp and then I was able to restore).

This method will not work because he's corrupted his extended partition table. All that's left is the write-protected hboot, which the processor can't find because the partition table is gone. So he can't boot into recovery.
People have been working on this issue for a long time and there is currently no solution if you're on 2.20.
To the OP, where did you get a copy of ICJ? The latest version is supposed to contain asserts to prevent flashing on this phone. You can get this repaired by HTC for $150 or something. Or, if your ethics allow it, people have played dumb and gotten warranty replacements.
Next time don't go rooting and romming the day you get your phone.

If there is no ROM loaded onto the phone, as in doing a full /system wipe, the asserts will not work.
The assert that's being flashed looks at the build.prop that's already loaded onto the phone.

And of course, it's good practice to wipe /system when changing roms. I didn't think of that. That's obviously why people are still getting in trouble.

I don't ever wipe /system when flashing ROMs. It gets wiped when you flash anyway. I always wipe user data (factor reset), Dalvik and cache. But that's it.

Yep, if you format /system, the build.prop is gone, and the assert looks to the build.prop.. why it flashes, I don't know.
The way its set up seems like it would only flash if "ro.device=endeavoru" or whatever the line is, is present. I guess there is no fail safe to stop the process if the build.prop isn't present
Yeah, i'll skip the playing dumb idea. I prefer just going straight up to HTC about this. Would i be able to call in to HTC and ask them how much it costs? That is, if they accept these kinds of repairs.

They can fix any software corruption they have the tools too they know their phones front to back and can rewrite anything to them...just tell them what happened and they'll tell you the cost( maybe they'll feel bad and give a nice price) honesty can get you in good places sometimes
Thanks. Will send everyone who replied a thank button. Regardless of what type of comment...... I'll need to check the cost. Hopefully its below 100....

[Q] Stuck in ''entering recovery...'' htc one s

What's up everybody! This is my first post here and I am what you would call a noob!
First of all I got tired of the 4.2.2 jb upgrade never coming to my htc one s and decided to give cyanogenmod 10.1 a shot (my first attempt ever tampering with mobile software)!
So I have unlocked the bootloader on my phone following a guide. It now says ''unlocked''
After that, I have tried to flash the paul recovery.img from this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1583427 .
I have done it through adb with the command promt as it says on the article above!
The command promt apparently managed to do the job and it said ''finished'' as it should!
Then i rebooted the phone into recovery mode through the bootloader menu but it then stucks there doing nothing...I have left it for 5 minutes and it was still like that and i thought that the recovery wasn't succesful (i ve seen it going very fast at the clockworkmod menu at videos on youtube while mine was stuck). I then rebooted it by holding down the power button and it went to the sence screen normally.
Then i have tried the other recovery img described at the article...Same thing happened...Then the other one! Same thing again!
Every time i am trying to flash the recovery image the phone stucks in ''entering recovery...'' screen, doing nothing.
Am I doing something wrong?
Please help, it will be much appreciated! I really want to dig custom roms...I' m a total geek
Thanks in advance!!

To boot into recovery, Hold VolumeDown + Power.
Edit: maybe you've done that, but make sure that you choose the correct recovery version. that is, match the version of your phone S3/S4 with the recovery.

Can you tell me where i can find the right recovery for my S3 model?

Have the same problem (HTC one at&t) and that link he has that I clicked gives you a page of LIKE A WHOLE LIST of versions.. How do you know which one to choose?
plus spent all night trying to download the recovery.img from clockworkmod.com as well as other links and all I get is this LONG encrypted script page displayed, and not an actual FILE that prompts you to download. going crazy here!

The link works, i ve managed to do it but twrp is useless if you want to flash any roms...I have tried every known version of cm for htc one s and I can't flash any of them in my phone through the twrp recovery...Always fails for no apparent reason! If you want my advise, do not waste your time, cause it's almost certain that ig you flash any custom rom, you will loose the advantages of htc sense, including the camera performance and special effects and also the beautiful widgets...If anyone though knows how to flash a REALLY nice rom with twrp we will be glad to hear his/her suggestions!

sad part is I'm not going for anything fancy.. When I bought the phone (last week) it had version 4.1 on there and all I want to do is upgrade it to 4.2... and no it's NOT available through AT&T in anyways what's so ever.. hence the flash recovery chaos.
If no one response with a solid solution, then I'm just gonna let it be like you said.

Tell me what do you want to do to your phone?
State in points, easy for me
blah
No it wont affect.
By the way, TWRP recovery has been the most successful one with The One S.
Google twrp and Download it for VILLE (THE S4 MODEL HTC ONE S) and then flash it.
