[Q] S Note: Error Occurred. HELP!! - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey there,
I have a Note 10.1 and use it to take down my lecture notes from university.
Ive had no problems with it all semester until this week when I sit down to do my revision all my S note files are blacked out and when I open them I am greeted with the 'error occurred' message, so basically I have lost a whole semesters worth of work (besides this weeks) thanks to the corruption of this data. I do have a 64 gb SD card mounted but my S note files have never been anywhere but in the S Note folder on the system memory I have already tried to change their extensions on my PC with little success.
So the question after my rant is are there any ways to sort this out so I can do some f'in revision?
Many thanks,
Adam

So trying to find how to fix a corrupt snb file is a pain in the butt! I lost my school notes for the semester as well, and we're in finals week now. It's an absolute must I have them, so I feel your pain.
I found out that if you change the file extension from .snb to .zip you can view what is in the file itself. Now a zip should open on any computer, but if it doesn't, it means your snb file is corrupt. The way it became corrupt is your snb was probably open in s-note while you restarted or updated something. Because it didn't close and save properly, it corrupted the file.
Step 0. Move the snb from your device to a pc.
Step 1. Change the file extension from snb to zip.
Step 2. Find a zip repair program THAT WON'T STUFF A BUNCH OF MALWARE into your computer.
Step 3. Run the damaged zip through to repair it.
Step 4. Try to open the repaired file as a zip. If it opens, whatever was corrupting it is now gone.
Step 5. Change back the file extension to snb. (now if it doesn't change back at first, it might be because when you initially changed it to a zip, the file extension became hidden because zips are recognizable to pc's. You'll have to change the viewing options in order to make the file extension visible, and therefore, editable)
Step 6. Put it back into your tab-phone-blet-whichever to test it out.
Step 7. Hope and pray that since it worked for me, it'll work for you.
Good luck!

S-Note Blank Pages
I tried this without success. The snd opened fine as a zip. Everything was still blank though.
This topic came up on another forum, and at least in my case and another's, the problem happened after adding an image to a page.
In my case, it was adding an image on the S-Note Diary template--lost 39 pages.
A previous notebook was saved using the "Note" template without trouble. I even added images, but manually, not into placeholders as with the Diary template.
Seems pretty clear there's a bug in the S-Note app that Samsung needs to fix. Until I hear of a fix, I'm staying away from the templates that include places for images. Too much work wasted... I normally backup regularly, but hadn't yet with this 39 page batch...

Hi, I lost my s note files due to custom binary frp locked and I did a factory data reset when I tried to recover the back up files that I had on my pc thru recuva it doesnt open my s note files it says invalid file format and file might be moved, deleted, or renamed. Is there any chance to open it back?

Notification Error

I recently tried to start PicselBrowser.exe from a location other than the default one. It failed and I put it back into it`s default directory and uninstalled/reinstalled it. Now every time I turn on my Apache (WM5) it tells me ''Notification Error'' ''Cannot execute /Storage Card/PicselBrowser.exe'' which is the directory that I mentioned that I had failed to start the program from. Does anyone know how I can stop this message? Thanks.
Any ideas?
Does anyone know of a forum somewhere that would be better suited for this question?

Yes, that is a little easy to solve. I had that trouble a while back with another application I was messing with. Here is the solution.
Look into Windows>Start Up folder. In there you will probably see a .lnk file pointing to the OLD PicselBrowser.exe. Since you already moved the OLD PicselBrowser.exe file to a NEW location, then put it back in the same place. Your PPC thinks it is already a NEW file despite the fact that you returned the very same file to its ORIGINAL location. The solution is to replace that .lnk file by creating a shorcut of the NEW PicselBrowser.exe file in another folder, then rename that file to the same name as the one found in Windows>Start Up folder. The next step is a simple cut and paste to replace the lnk file.
The uninstall process probably leaves behind the OLD lnk file or notification to launch the NEW picselbrowser.exe file. So in reality, the lnk file is still searching for the OLD PicselBrowser.exe file. Despite the Uninstall procedure that you performed.
I hope I made it clear for you. Let us know if it works.
Good luck.

Thanks for the reply, I am a newb when it comes to technical PPC stuff. I looked in my startup folder and several others and found the following:
poutlook.lnk
sddaemon.lnk
Services.lnk
SpbMobileShell.lnk
None of these appear to be Picsel Browser, I also looked on my Storage Card, nata. Any other ideas? Thanks again!

Ohhhhhhhhh. I have another thoery and again very simple.
What kind of SD Card are you using? I would guess a 4GB one, isn't it? Basically what is happening is that, the built-in SD Card reader of your PPC is not fast enough to read the entire contents of the SD card when you turn it ON. To solve this issue, there should be an option from within Picsel Browser to delay its startup upon turning your device ON.
An alternative solution is to install Picsel Browser in the Main Memory rather than the SD Card.
Another alternative solution is to use a Lower Memory SD Card, say a 2GB SD Card, for faster read.
As a last resort, if you have MemMaid or a powerful Notifications Manager, just delete the pesky notification manually. Why does Picsel Browser need to be read every time you turn your device ON anyway?
Hope this helps.
---
Actually, I am running a 2 GB MiniSD Card and to be honest, I dont know why it is trying to activate PicselBrowser.exe each time I turn on the device. Let me clarify that it is not coming on every time that I do a soft reset, it is every time I press the power button on top of the device. Also, I got this same message when I first tried to run PicselBrowser in it's not default location, which is why I moved it back. Why it has been attempting that operation ever since is a complete mystery to me. Thanks for your help though. I would be clueless without you.
I guess the only thing to try now is delete the notification manually using a Notifications manager. BACKUP 1st is the RULE, before deleting an kind of Notifications.
Another extreme solution is Hard Reset and install from scratch. I know sounds horrifying specially if you have tons of stuff.

I'm getting exactly the same error for 'wakeup.exe' for Wisbar Advanced Desktop at the minute, I know that there has been a lot of discussion over at the lakeridge forums but most people have solved the problem by reinstalling several times.
EDIT: i think I may have fixed my problem. try installing picsel browser again without uninstalling it on your pocket pc. See if you get the message about 'all other previous versions will be deleted' just tap yes and continue to install it again. Then see what happens.
(And just as i thought i fixed it, the message appeared again)
I tried to install Picsel Browser over the existing install several times and it did nothing to the error message. I don't know what else to try, any more ideas?
Please, this is really annoying every time I turn on my phone. Any ideas?
I sitll get the same with WAD.
Hey, I fixed this problem simply by copying (NOT CUTTING) the file in question (in my case PicselBrowser.exe) to the directory that it was telling me it could not start from. Hope this helps. Cheers

missing file issue?

Since I can't post in the q & a forum I am posting here but mods feel free to move it. So I have a wm6.1 device and a Mac computer and I regularly send files, like cab and music files with out an issue. However, today I noticed that I send a music file like usual and the file is no where to be found on the devices however space about the same size as the file is being taken up. So I send another two files(one music and one cab file) with out an issue at all. Then later on I send a cab file, but I don't see it on the device even though space is being take up. This may have happened prior to this, but I didn't realize it or something. So how can A) regain that space by deleting those files not showing up, or B) find the files that are not showing up and use them as I intended to. I am loosing space because of this. Option of last(and I mean last) resort is a hard rest which I don't like to do. Thank you....

get a good file browser and search for the missing files. You may want to use a wild card search (*.cab,*.mp3)
if you still can not find them look in the folders in /Windows and /Temp or or equivalent on the device
well i am using total commader so I dunno how good that is or not. Not to mention I have done what you suggested and even searched for files added with in the last 3 days and nothing on all fronts but yet the sapce is being taken up by something that I can't seem to find on my device. Memory maid was no help either(granted I only did a clean up). But thank you.
have you tried using the default file explorer?

strange files

so I sync yesterday and notice 3 folders with characters not normally allowed. one contains all "?" while another has / and ?. when I try to delete, system can't since they contain these characters. and I can't find them using total command. any help?
You need to provide more infomation so we can help you .
Which version are you using (WM 6, 6.5, 6.5.3 etc.)? Where are the folders located? Do they contain files?
Sorry. Runninng WM6.5 stock verizon ROM with TF3D 2.0 on my Imagio. And they don't contain any files. I can open, but when I go to delete, it says files cannot contain the following symbols blah blah blah. And I can't seem to find them using TC.

Are the folders on the SD card ? My suggestions below:
1) If they are, try deleting them from the Windows PC side via an ActiveSync connection or in "Disk drive mode".
2) Try renaming the folders with 'proper characters' and then delete.
3) If in "disk drive mode", try removing them via DOS command. You may want to do a "dir /X" to see the 8.3 short file/folder name and remove them.
Regards.

No, they aren't on the SD card, they are phone memory. Whenever I try to rename them, I get the same error code, telling me files cannot contain the following..... And as for the last, I don't know anything about DOS, so that would require a level of expertise that I just don't have. I haven't seen any strange behaviour on the phone, and my memory size and usage has not freaked out, nor has my battery life. So what they are or what they are for is beyond me.
The 3 files are names thus:
??????
????Documents
oc????
Very odd.

Jerry,
My suggestions are only if the files reside on the SD card.
I believe the ? means the available fonts, on your phone, does not have the correct character set to display it properly.
Base on my belief above, try the following:
a) My apology being a new member, I am not allowed to post clickable link. Go to this link : add a http:// in front first
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=5869460
b) Download and install the "Droid Sans Font.cab" to your phone in post #9. Alternatively, search for the file, arialuni.ttf, (Arial Unicode MS) first on your Windows PC if not then on the web and copy it to your phone, \Windows\Fonts directly. This is a 22Mb file !
c) Restart your phone and see if those files are showing proper characters.
d) If it does, then go ahead, open it and see what's the content like. Rename the file then delete. Uninstall the "Droid Sans Font.cab" if you wish. Personally, I don't like the font as the characters are rasterised.
Regards.
ugh, too much work. My phone isn't acting up, and even though I don't like uninvited strangers, they aren't eating up resources, and my phone is still functioning properly. I will keep these files you suggested handy in case something does start acting up, and see what happens.
yea, I am lazy when it comes to electronic stuff. Thanks for the info!
If you have SK Tools (or a similar app), try scanning the memory. It sounds like you have corrupted files or a corrupted directory. It may not be causing issues now, but it could cause issues sooner rather than later. You may also think about backing up everything now while you can.

25000 .txt files - problem

Hi,
I am musician and have big lyric collection, around 25.000 files.
They are all saved in .txt format.
Since i got Transformer idea was to have it with me on my gigs instead of having huge 17inch laptop.
I tried to copy files, from external HDD, over WIFI, from SD card ... and its taking so long, last time i stopped it after almost an hour of transfer. And i think i got only around 3000 files copied.
Do you have suggestion on how to quickly copy/manage all those files on tablet? (no problems on PC whatsoever )
I appreciate your help.
Thank you.
Buy a damn fast SD card and reader, and copy the files to the SD card through the PC.
Or get an USB HDD and plug it into the TF.
Copying millions of small files always takes ages, and flash chips are especially bad at this. And the flash chips in the TF isnt exactly the fastest performing available.
Even my SSD disc on my PC slows down a lot during small-file writing (sometimes as low as 10MB/sec, compared to ~530MB/sec on larger files).
So basically, copy them within, to or from the tablets internal memory will take years. Only "solution" would be to zip all the files so you end up with 1 big zip file instead of 25k small files.
Thanks for answer.
As i mentioned, i tried to copy them from external USB Hard Drvie, as well as SD card, Class 10.
I forgot to mention that i tried to zip/rar files, copy to internal SD and then extract to a folder. Same thing happens. Veeeeery slow. Takes ages.
Yeah, the issue is youre writing to the internal memory, which isnt capable of writing very fast.
Your best solution would be to just keep the files on the USB HDD (if you got USB port for your TF) or the external SD card
Not to mention that transfers of many small files is generally the slowest of all, where large single files are generally much more efficient. No matter what you do, you still can't avoid that problem. My suggestion would be to do as others have said and connect the SD card directly to your computer, transfer them, and then put the SD in your transformer.
looks like that will be my only option
thank you guys

dont know if this method will help but, you could use 7zip to compress the files into 1 file from a PC, there is a 7zip app for android that can open it up and view the files. so you dont have to uncompressed it on the tablet
7zip http://www.7-zip.org/download.html
7zip on anrdoid https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ru.zdevs.zarchiver&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsInJ1LnpkZXZzLnphcmNoaXZlciJd
with 25k files, i think you need database. may help make it easier to search and sort through so much data.

Tnx for tip, i will try 7zip definitely!!
Regarding Db,.. thats the problem i am trying to find db app or similar for 3 years now. Wanted to do this on my cell phone too.
On windows i simply use TreePad software and everything is in one big file, search-able(indexed) so i can search for any word inside text and i will get results in matter of seconds.
I wish there is something similar available on android

well, if you looking for a db app these isnt any out there as far as i know, BUT
http://paw-android.fun2code.de/
you could try this. its like running a mini web server on your tf. and it allows you to make connections to sqlite, which is already built into android. so in theory you could be able to make a web app that stores your lyrics and allows you to access it via web browser on your tf (offline too).
it can run PHP, i've only used it to run web pages for demos nothing really heavy. never tried connecting to sqlite though.
http://www.vogella.de/articles/AndroidSQLite/article.html
if you are interested.
Tnx for answer Phil,...
I tried, and still have PAW setup on my tablet with PHP module installed.
There is option in dB program i use on Windows (TreePad) to export searchable (requires php) WebPage of my database, but looks like that their export is kinda buggy and That Exported site sometimes works sometimes doesnt. I contacted them and i am waiting for their answer.
I am still looking for something in this regards,... any other ideas or solutions is appreciated!
Thank you

Transfer WhatsApp Chats to New Galaxy Note Phone from PC

I had my 2nd Galaxy Note 4 show the eMMC fault and go into endless bootlooping. I thought that I had been backing up whatsapp to google, but I found out otherwise. Here is the situation:
*Note 4 (unrooted) would start up for about 20 seconds before restarting. Not enough time to backup whatsapp to google drive. I was backing up whatsapp locally though. Marshmallow 6.0.1
*I was able to install TWRP. The phone has no problem starting and staying in TWRP recovery mode. Endless bootlooping only occurs when I try to start Android
*I could see all non-root-access folders in TWRP as well as in file explorer in Windows 10 when the phone was in recovery mode and connected to PC
*I copied all whatsapp folders from the phone to PC with Windows 10 file explorer (again, only when the phone is in TWRP recovery mode)
* I realized that these files may not be enough to open the whatsapp db in a new phone due to encryption
*I then used TWRP to install Magisk
*Then I was able to use ADB to pull the whatsapp key file and wa.db file from the phone to PC
*I am able to unencrypt the database and view in WhatsApp viewer
*After 6+ years of the Note 4 (2 separate devices), I purchased the Note20 Ultra yesterday (what an upgrade!!)
Question is, what do I need to do to get the chats from my PC onto my Note 20? Phone-to-phone transfer won't work because the Note 4 won't stay on long enough. BTW, I'm almost a complete noob--I just figured these things out yesterday with the help of some amazing resources from folks like you. So a big thanks to you. I did some whatsapp db merging a few years ago when my first Note 4 died, but I don't think any of that knowledge is still relevant.
...surely it can't be as easy as transferring my media files then dropping only the msgstore.db file into the Note 20, can it?
Ok, it really was that easy.
*I copied all my non-root-access Whatsapp folders over to my unrooted Note 20. These folders included all media and the msgstore.db.crypt12 files but, of course, did not include the key nor the wa.db files as these latter files are only found in the root-access folders.
*I then signed in to a google account so that I could download Whatsapp from the Play Store
*After initial installation and before a full whatsapp setup, I signed out of all google accounts on the Note 20 in order to force a restore from the local backup that I had copied to the phone (actually, I messed up twice and Whatsapp found an old google drive backup; I had to uninstall and reinstall whatsapp twice; finally worked on the 3rd try)
*Most of my chat contents, media, and correct contact names are now on my new phone
I must not have understood the high-level details of the encryption. I thought that the key was device-specific and that moving an encrypted msgstore.db file to a new device meant that I must also move the original key with the db file so that the new device could decrypt the first time. This doesn't seem to be the case. It must be that the key is associated with the whatsapp-registered phone number because I did use the same sim card/phone number in the old and new phones. Does anybody know if that is correct?
Two slight issues that I will try to fix today include 1) some missing contact details and 2) a few missing recent whatsapp chats.
1) Most of my contacts were synced with google, so I pulled most of them to my Note 20 quite easily. I must have also had some local contacts on my old phone that I never synced with google. Can anybody post a link to a good tutorial on how to convert a contacts2.db to vCard or a similar format? It's tantalizing that my old Note 4 will start for about 20 seconds and I have tried to get into my contacts on the phone and export them to the removable SD card. It's so close. The export starts but doesn't quite finish. The result is an unfinished (408kb) vcf file on my sd card that won't open on my new phone.
2) I think that the old phone started up just long enough to download the latest whatsapp chats from the server, but not long enough for me to view them. I'm missing chats from the 3-4 days between when the old phone was wonky and I installed whatsapp on the new phone. I think that they are not downloading from the whatsapp server onto my new phone because they already downloaded to my old phone
Any thoughts on any of this?
If you can't decrypt, key file has changed.
Decrypting is not a problem. I can do it on my pc as long as I have the key file (which I do). The new phone is also able to decrypt--without the key. That is what surprised me
If you make a full backup and then make a full restore, your whatsapp will work perfectly.
You mixed things up a lot.
Msgstore.db and wa.db are never in same folder of msgstore.db.crypt12.
Msgstore.db and all other databases (*.db files) are not encrypted.
You don't need key file to read them.
Only *.crypt12 files are encrypted.
For them, you will never can decrypt them without key file.
About google backups, they are NOT encrypted.
All files backuped to google, are unencrypted.
Taken care.
Your worries are unnecessary.
Keep your backups safe and secure and you will have no one problem.
Ok.
So I did make a complete backup of the rooted Note 4 to my external SD card using twrp. I now have 2 phones: the old Note 4 which won't start and the new Note 20 which I don't want to root at the moment.
How could I make a full restore, so that my whatsapp will work perfectly?
Ok, I think I got this now. I've read up on the various threads related to this and I think I know what to do now
