Hello Dear One s Community ^_^
finally im able to upgrade my phone from a HTC Desire to something better... But i can´t decide what to get : HTC 1 S or the Sony Xperia S
i need a phone with good cam so:
first of all the software is not important for me i will run MIUI on it so HTC Sense is not important for me
pro Xperia S:
-dedicated camera button
- RGB Led
-Design
-720p Display
-highest dpi
-Normal LCD+Bravia Engine
-Hdmi output
-USB OTG
-32 GB Storage
negative Points:
- much thicker then the One S
-"only" a S3 processor
- smaller community
- cam software not that good
now the One S:
PRO
- Newest S4 processor
- better cam software (sense based miui roms)
- much thinner then the Xperia S
- its from HTC ( i never had ANY problem with my Desire and the Desire is still an awesome phone with the greatest community on the block after 2 years!)
Negativ
- LED Only 2 colours
- Pentile Matrix ( not that good i heard... )
- lower resolution
- only 16 gb storage ...
- i read that the one s has some build issues that the case has some problems
- no USB Otg
- no HDMI (yes with an adapter but then you can´t plugin a keyboard or something like on xperia s only with bluetooth @ one s... )
i really don´t know what phone to get ...
no fanboy comments pls
best regarts Melly
My friend got xperia, I got HTC One S.
What can I say about this:
1. HTC One S is much much more thinner, and design is better
2. Xperia got 32gb memory (I kinda dont care)
3. One S got 25gb dropbox
4. Xperia got better camera and also a button for camera (I would like one on S).
5. S can make photos of video easly, also I think it makes a photo much faster
6. Xperia dont have android 4 officialy
7. I like sens on One S
8. I didnt see much difference between the displays...
9. One S battery lasts longer. Xperias bravia engine takes its part in it.
I came from the HTC Desire to the HTC One S and i am loving it. For me i checked out the Sony Xperia S in stores but not the One S since its not availible in my country atm.
I found the screen on the Xperia S to be amazing, the pixel density is unrivalled however other than the screen the Xperia S didnt have much going for it that i required. Its a bulky phone that ran gingerbread at the time and the user experience was a bit on the laggier side. I havent been keeping up so i dont know if it has ICS yet and if it fixes those issues. The experience on the One S has been great and coming from a HTC Desire its a massive upgrade in all departments.
Main reason i chose the HTC One S was because of the size, build quality and S4 chip. The S4 chip is amazingly fast and effiecient, runs much cooler than my desire for games and i suspect it runs much cooler and more efficiently than the S3 chip found in the Xperia S. In terms of camera, both phones carry good cameras for a phone and the Xperia S seems to have better reviews but neither will replace you digital camera any time soon. I dont think you will notice much difference in quality unless u do careful analysis ;p.
To answer you question on build quality, the Micro Arc Oxidation version (Black) seems to have an unresolved chipping issue and it seems to be the luck of the draw if you get chipping or not. They grey version has none of those issues though. One thing to mention is that HTC are releasing this phone with the S3 1.7ghz chip now so better make sure with your seller before you buy it.
I think you will be happy with either phone but in my opinion if you loved the experience on the HTC Desire you'll certainly love the experience on the HTC One S.
Lastly i think with the new Jelly Bean announcement and Project Butter, when it eventually hits the HTC One S official or ported by devs coupled with the S4 chip, i believe Sense 4 will be absolutely beastly!
xperia s seems like another phone from sony that's too little too late. had they released it with a S4 cpu and ICS then it would would do okay in today's market against the offering from samsung and htc.
I think the One S is sooo fast!
Now i have the cm9 alpha 12 and its running very good!

I own both Xperia S and One S(S4). I think there are quite a lots of misleading
things on the Internet, mainly from poor review bases.
1. The major advantage from XS is the 720P LCD, obviously clear than One S. You can notice it easily. However, it does come with complaint, little yellow tint or over warm color temp. I'm glad to get an excellent LCD with minor issues of both but you might not be the lucky one like me. I do rank them at the same score unless you could find Xperia S equipped with a problem-free screen but the chance isn't high, you have to be real lucky.
2. I believe all HTC ONE will has USB OTG support with custom kernels, just don't think we will see it soon.
3. The smaller community one sadly is One S. You can go to the XS board and spot the situation, there are more threads and more roms, more active users. XS is a worldwide available mobile while One S isn't(it's, now, but divided into S3/S4 lines and S3 just isn't selling any good, at least at here - Hong Kong. None of us going to buy the S3, there are only little shops who sells it too).
4. Pentile Matrix doesn't has any issue on a 4.3" QHD. I don't know how well it performs on a larger screen with higher resolution, it may has some problems there.
5. Both design well. XS is a sex lady while One S is a pretty young girl. It's just a matter of taste. Personally, I would like to know which kind you(OP) are? just kidding...
6. yup, I like the LED on XS. It's better. But I also like One S which is thinner and light weight.
7. S4 CPU is definitely fast and not as hot as XS. The major bonus to One S and this is my main reason to use it as a primary phone. Another problem is you can't charge the XS while the phone is on and the battery temp. goes over 40 degrees(One S still charges at 40+), which is very easy to get to this temp you know it's summer now. I've tried to use air-condition flow or a big cooling fan to cool the XS down, just wish it let me to charge without turn it off. You know it's a horrible experience.
8. Time to speak on the stock ROM side. HTC is overall better, faster and not as buggy as XS(Sony UI is really pretty and there are more custom roms on XS, I think they could solve the stock problems). The battery consumption on the XS rom is superior considered it is on a S3 cpu. Sony manged it very well on XS, did a good job. I've to say the stock One S rom is only a little bit better than XS, not very good performance on battery, almost a well-known here. I know you will switch to MIUI, I'm running LeeDroid V2.1 with SetCPU and got much better battery life.
9. Finally, the camera. They both do a good job on their own, I really can't tell you which is better. They work exactly in the opposite way, very confusing? huh?
In general, XS takes excellent photo at outdoor beat the One S easy, not as fast as but not much slower than One S. While at indoor or low light environment, One S blows the XS away with f/2.0, XS got more noise with slow focus. XS is great for outdoor and One S is great for indoor.
XS does a very accurate white balance all the time outdoor/indoor but One S has faster focus speed outdoor/indoor. The XS auto scenes mode and close up mode works better while One S gives you a 60 photo bursting mode(old rom supports up to 99).
Video part is the XS wins. The video is more stable and the quality is also improved in the official ICS. One S on the other hand, let you shoot 5M photo during recording and offers a funny slow motion video mode.
10. At last, I forget to tell you. The Xperia SL(Lt26ii) will roll out. No one know the details at right now but it might be a S4 cpu or LTE supported device.
Thank you to reading my long reply and not fall asleep.
Just some quick updates to my last reply ....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1629134&highlight=usb+host
It's my fault. One S already supported USB-OTG now. It is just quite trouble because it doesn't provide power. We still need a kernel mod like on One X to make USB-OTG supports better.
And second, it's confirmed Xperia SL remains as a S3 unit. I guess no S4 and LTE, just some minor upgrade like [email protected]
sold my experia and got a one s.. if that tells u something. Got damn small buttons on the xperia got me crazy
Hey guys, I'm getting a new phone in August when my contract dies. My current phone is a stock Nexus S running Jellybean. I'm trying to decide between getting the HTC One S, or the Samsung Galaxy S III. Both are priced at $400 on a 2-year contract with Virgin mobile, and I'm completely stuck on making my decision. With the One S, have any of you had considerable problems or issues with it? Would you get an SIII if you could? I believe that each of these phones are evenly matched, and each have their strengths and their weaknesses. I'm a fan of HTC Sense 4.0, and i like the overall build quality of the One S, but the S III has more ram, a removable battery and expandable memory. The HTC One X is not available with Virgin mobile, so I cannot get the HTC equivalent of the S III. Which would you recommend?
Thanks
Well. That depends. If you love trying new ROMs/kernels on your device, the s3 is going to be better in the long run. Not that the one s lacks a healthy dev community. We have many great devs with awesome Roms but the s3 has more people on board.
On the other hand, I found the one s more stylish and I like Sense 4 better.
Personally, I have no issues with my One S and with HTC promising a JB update, we know that, hopefully, all software related issues will be squished. You could look around for some common issues but nothing serious IMO but YMMV.

then you prolly didnt complete the steps to get the 25 gb. you should have gotten an email when you registered for DB or signed in which told you how to get the 25 gb.
as for your q, im more than happy with the one s. The screen is the perfect size whereas i believe the SG3 has a screen thats too big to be comfortable. Maybe if you have big hand its ok lol. The only drawback i suppose would be the 16 gb storage, but using DB and google play music, that isn't really an issue. in the end though, it all comes down to your choice. Both are amazing phones
HTC One S was my choice. I prefer Sense 4.0 over Samsung's skin as well as I think HTC is doing better with updates than Sammy.

Thanks guys, also, how's the display on the one s? Its a pentile which means it could be a little jagged but my Nexus S has one and I really don't find it that bad.

Display is great, obviously not as sharp as the gs 3 and x and has less screen real estate due to the 720p res that the x and gs 3 have.

And of course you would expect the display of a device that costs about £130 more to be better.
the galaxy s3 is not miles ahead of the one s. I had it. Glad I got my money back. Its nice but it is way too big and feels like a kids toy.
I found myself in same position 3 weeks ago, and I struggled for weeks researching my choices between one s and s3. All my friends got s3 so I had a good chance to try it.
Though what s3 does is impressive as far as speed and memory goes, it seriously lags in look & feel and coolness factor. It feels like lugging around a tablet than phone and it barely fits in pocket.
Compare that to one s, which I finally ended up getting which is incredibly fast, memory though less never been a hindrance. I had 10gigs available after all system programs which I believe is plentiful when added with the online storage options.
Sure s3 beats one s in all test scores but one s Screen is unbelievable, phone is sleek and stylish and you can still reach around with one hand and fits in your pocket. Camera will put your point and shoot cameras to rest and I cannot be more happy.
And battery life is great too. I got a about 12 hours on moderate use even with couple of camera flashes and I still have 20% left.
Ultimately think of the long term impacts of having a tablet for a phone for next 2 years just because it is fast and more memory, vs. having a sleek, handy pocket able phone which is still fast with decent amount of memory.

Does Adobe Flash still work on both devices?
gs3 = hot and plastic
main reason i switched from gs2 to one s
i tried the gs3 its just gets hot when using the phone
Actually the GS 3 doesn't even beat the S in all of the benchmark tests (both the quad and S4 version), yes the res. does have an impact but then the XL has the same hardware but also 720P res. and it still beats the GS 3 in the majority of tests.
The GS 3 international version only beats both in the tests, which uses the GPU such as quadrant etc. as the GPU is far better than the adreno 225.
Only areas that the GS 3 is better is:
screen
1080P recording
storage/SD slot
removable battery
bigger developing community
Everything else is more or less same or better on the S (IMO):
- camera is more or less the same (some photos look better on the GS 3, others look better on the S), however, the UI is better than touchwiz alternative and has way more features, which are actually cool and make taking photos more enjoyable.
- Speed/smoothness is more or less the same, only reason the GS 3 appears to be smoother is due to the animations/timing that is used, could achieve the same if you flashed those animations and had the exact same timings, besides were getting JB soon hopefully so there will be virtually no difference then (on any of the phones)
- audio is more or less the same (some say the GS 3 is better, others say the S is better)
- out of the box battery life is better (to be expected considering the S has a smaller battery and is only qHD), not by a huge amount though, however, with the GS 3 you can carry spare batteries around with you
- sense V4 is far far better in looks/UI, unified feel, the stock apps are amazing such as the gallery, calendar etc. touchwiz has loads of gestures and some cool features (but the majority of these are being ported over to every other android phone, such as the smart stay feature (iseeyou, works great on my S), Svoice, smart status bar (can drag the notification bar down when in an app full screen) etc. only a matter of time till we get things that like smart alert etc. The same can't be said with sense app/features though. IMO touchwiz is too bloated and no real unified feel across the apps/menus etc. everything just looks disorganized and the colour scheme is too kiddish/cartoonish
- and lastly the build/perceived quality of the S is miles ahead of the GS 3 and IMO looks far better compared to the GS 3 (subjective the looks though)
Do you want a phone that fits in your trouser pocket?
Get the One S
Are you a basketball player with huge hands?
Get the One X or Galaxy S3
Want to watch lots of movies?
Get a tablet.
Phones are getting far too big these days. Unfortunately there are no top spec 4" phones, so I got the One S. It's still in the mail so I can't really review it further. Manufacturers really need to learn from apple here, make it pocket sized for f&# sake. Also half the market is female and even being an average size male I find the latest phones too large.
There are some things that suck on the One S though: No MicroSD , Stupid capacitive buttons, at least samsung always have one proper button, sense UI looks like tacky plastic ****.
If you do get one s make sure it's not the old snapdragon S3 SoC which has worse battery life.
I whole heartedly agree with the above. I'm 6'0 healthy 225 pounds guy that thought the beastly oversized gs3 would fit me. I was wrong. That thing is just way to big. I found one handed operations almost impossible. The display isn't that great either, not for the price. Plus I had a amoled smear that looked like a smiley face smack in the center of the screen. The one s that uses Samsung amoled displays shows no sign of such things.

Yeah I know
But the GS 3 is far better for light metering and smoothness and slightly better quality as well.
I think these are probably two of the best phones being released this year. The ZL just hit the FCC for att and the Z is over seas basically the same phone just one got notification LED and the US ZL isnt fully water proof like the OG Z.
Anyway i want to compare the phones both design wise and spec wise which you think is better or would prefer.
To me i like both appearance wise, the only thing i dis like about the sony is non removable (smaller batter) than the s4. 2370mah vs 2600...
The other thing is which one packs the most speed under the hood... Im not to familiar with the Chipset, Qualcomm MDM9215M / APQ8064
CPU Quad-core 1.5 GHz Krait, GPU Adreno 320 thats in the sony. And depending on which variant of s4 you get then there is snapdragon and exynos..
So thoughts anyone... I dont want this to be a bash this or that thread just honest comparison of the two as i think the xperia z is one of if not the closet contender to the s4 for 1080p smart phones

I have a Z and the screen is phenomenal, much better than the One X and GS3, it just doesn't look too good on videos...
Overall, I love my XZ, the waterproof is really cool and I like to show that feature off.
I prefer Sony due to their developer-friendliness and higher build quality.
I also love their UI, Samsung's just doesn't do it for me, and their phones don't look too nice to me either.
That is not to say that Samsung make bad phones, the specs are usually ahead (on paper), and I'm sure there are people who like the phone design/UI choices that Samsung make...

With such a high pixel density, you can't really say that a 1080p phone screen looks that different to a 720p one... (I own both an XT and an XZ, and they look almost identical)
There isn't exactly a plethora of 1080p phones to compare it to at the moment anyway.
I have found that I prefer Sony's TFT displays, they are less saturated, although the viewing angles are worse (which is fine, I hold my phone in-front of me, not sideways )
But whatever, I'm not gonna say whether one is 'the best', these are just my opinions...

Don't even try to compare LCD Vs (S)AMOLED. It's not the same technology at all. (S)AMOLED is great for people loving over saturated colors (including me), whilst LCD is for people that are more into life like colors. But....
The Xperia Z is having some serious problems with its display. Consistency is the word here and the Z doesn't seem to use the same display across devices. Some devices uses Sharp displays whilst some devices uses JDC. (S)AMOLED devices has excellent viewing angles, SLCD2/3 panels are also excellent, but the Z's TFT is quite disappointing. It's a really great device - and dev friendly, but the screen is toataly ruining it for me.
The S4? Really boring. It's packed with new features, but it's soooo boring. We've seen it before.
This is my own opinion.

Personally i like the s4 since its got the latest tech but to me they did good tech wise but are getting lazy in the appearance and software side of the phone game..
Sure you could probably say a galaxy looks the way it does because that makes it a galaxy but I feel the s4 should of had a bold new design and either less of a tw skin or a completely overhauled tw like no one has ever seen before. Guess I'm getting bored with they're products that's why i am leaning toward the zl because i like the software skin and design of the phone...

Yeah. I love the Z's display.
It's slightly behind the GS4 in terms of CPU (1.5 GHz quad Krait instead of 1.9) - but that really only matters on benchmark epeen. The raw hardware performance advantage will be thrown away by Samsung's bloat and atrocious software incompetence. Samsung Touchwizz is revolting and bloated, constantly assaulting you to sign up for a Samsung account until you give in or nuke the bloat. Sony's stock firmware, on the other hand, is so clean and well done that the ONLY thing I've done to my device after rooting so far has been to freeze the charge reminder in TiBu.
I'll be switching to CM10.1 soon, but that's more because I'm a CM maintainer and that is what I do, not because of deficiencies in the Sony stock firmware. If I had to run 100% unmodified stock on a device, the Z is the first non-Nexus device I've felt that I might be able to tolerate such an experience.

That's because the XZ can't compete. It has a subpar 1080p screen with washed out colors and really bad viewing angles, the speakers position is ridiculous and the speaker itself isn't that loud and clear, It LAGS like hell when you use the Sony launcher especially when you add more widgets and battery life isn't great. Plus it has some overheating issues. I think Sony will do better next year and this device is something to build up on, but it cannot compete with either the S IV or the One.

S4 is Ugly.

I've owned the Xperia Z since launch...
The display is very good, going from an S3, I have no regrets. Colours are good. Viewing angles are good too, slight change on colours ay extreme angles. My GS3 used to get a multi coloured sheen at extreme angles. Speaker is fine, location can be awkward but I rarely accidently cover it up with my hands.
In no way is the XZ laggy, I've not experienced this, infact its the most fluid handset I've owned.
Battery is good, needed cycling, lasts alot longer than my GS3 ever did. Also my GS2 and GS3 overheated more than my XZ.

In the store where I'm buying a new smartphone, both Xperia Z and Nexus 5 16 gb have the same price.
So I would like you to tell me what you think is best.
My main usage is social apps/web browsing, watch movies, listen to music, take casual photos and gaming (just a little).
I know the N5 has a much better cpu and gpu, but I'm not going to play much hardcore games (maybe just some GTA).
The advantages of Xperia Z are:
micro-sd slot (big advantage for me)
it's waterproof (awesome)
better battery life(?)
has better headphone audio quality
even though it hasn't got android 4.4 yet, it has android 4.3 with Sony apps
better overall quality
I can't really decide because I like Nexus 5 too, it's design and screen.
Just another question do you think is Xperia Z worth 70€ more than Nexus 4? (not related to the main choice)
Thank you.

Hold off for the Nexus 5 for now as there are many issues with it and google cannot get solid ground whether its a hardware or software issue, especially on the mic. Generally when a new device comes out i let it wait out and watch for bugs so I don't suffer through them but this time I couldn't resist.
I dont think xperia z is gud...one of my colleague had z...the display on it was sh*tty!! Bettr go for z1...its on par with N5....i hav N5 and my colleague exchanged his z with z1..
Z1 has superior camera, battery, display on par, sony apps+ android 4.4 on the way!!
But personally i prefer my N5 as its smaller more compact more lighter..

It has to be until the end of the week I can't wait. So this means you think I should go for Xperia Z?

I had the Xperia Z and returned it within 2 days. The battery life was HORRID and it couldn't be flashed or anything had I decided to do it. It was a beautiful phone and I loved the features but it chewed through almost 70% of my battery within 4 hours with only about 2 hours of that total being used to play games and surf the web.
My Nexus 5 on the other hand, stock, would go all day with the same usage. Now that I flashed a custom rom and kernel it lasts even longer. It doesn't have a microSD nor is it waterproof. But if storage is an issue then save up $50 more and get the 32gb version. Also, phones don't belong in water anyways and I've always been in the mindset to keep my phone in my pocket and use a bluetooth headphones to take calls.
Xperia z is garbage. Do not recommend

z1 is beautiful.
We can't decide for you, its your money your purchase.
Yeah you're all right I should pick N5, the problem is the Nexus 5 is out of stock atm in store I have to buy it, I'm hoping it gets back on by the end of the week.
In case it doesn't, I have to pick another phone because I have a coupon that ends at that time. So if that would happen, is the Xperia Z worth the 100$ over the Nexus 4?

Again, if battery is one of your main concerns then the Xperia Z shouldn't be on your list. But if I had to pick another phone because the Nexus 5 isn't in stock, I would go with the Moto X.
had one year ago xperia z just a while and sold it.
the main reason that you will not get the same speed and support like for the nexus 5.
and even with so popular galaxy s4, our still not that smooth like nexus 5.
why other companies cannot get normal android os for their devices and do not install their garbage software.
when I test z1 and z. the speed on z1 is definitely faster than z. But I prefer N5 than z1.

yes
fyi i own n5 and xz and the xperia z has a better cam and is a perfect outdoor phone, the n5 is the speed monster. Combined they are a good team
Also the Xperia Z's battery time is much better than the n5's.

I prefer N5 than z because the speed always win.

Go for nexus if you want to use unadulterated version of Android, wants to receive future upgrades early, want a better camera and much options in Android development

Hello guys.
I'm using a Nexus 4 now and after about two years it's starting to get broken.
I tought about getting a new phone but I have few requirments, hope you guys can help me with it.
1 (and the most important). smaller form factor than the Nexus 4's has.
2. Good battery life.
3. A well supported phone ( Roms, Guides, etc.).
I can get along with 720P and not having a 810SD xP...
I almost don't play games on the phone and the S4 Pro of the N4 is more than enough for me.
Thanks in advance!

Moto X 2013 or Sony Xperia Z1/Z3 compact. The Moto X has a 4.7" screen like the Nexus 4, but is smaller and lighter. In specs it appears thicker, but that's because the back is curved, and the phone is extremely comfortable to hold and use. Battery life is average, which makes it better than the Nexus 4, which is piss-poor. Some ROMSs are available, but lots of people stick with rooted stock, as it's very fast and minimal, but with some cool features. As for the Sonys, the Z3 Compact is the king of small Androids. Great specs, dual front speakers, very small, and almost absurdly good battery life. The Z1C isn't as nice, but is still a very good phone, and cheaper. Development is somewhat weak for the Sonys though, but at least they're rootable. There's the Galaxy Alpha as well, which is nice and small and thin, but I can't speak for development.
I'd go with the Moto X if you want something cheaper, or the Z3 Compact if you can afford to spend that much.

Thank you very much.
I thought about the Z3 Compact but I don't like Sony's phone and they seems to be "Bricky"..
And I don't like Samsung too.
I think I'd go with the Moto X.
Thanks .

There was a seller on eBay that had the 32gb Verizon branded (but compatible on all GSM networks) Developer Edition for only $200, but he upped the price to $300 just a few days ago. Right before I got my tax refund(s). Another seller has them for $250.
You can improve the battery life on the Moto X by turning off the "active" and "always listening" features. Also, since it's an AMOLED display, use a dark background and any dark themes available.
The Moto X is a seriously great phone. Too much attention is focused on specs, and not enough on simple usability and ergonomics, and the Moto X 2013 is possibly the nicest Android phone to hold, use, and carry in the pocket. I want one so badly, but I just can't justify buying one, since my own Nexus 4 is still going strong.

I will look up for this thanks!
And you're right, I think that the OS feel of the phone is more important than 8-core or 4-core processor.

I don't think I've seen a single complaint about the performance of the Moto X 2013. It's certainly not impressive on paper, but whatever they did with their "X8" processor definitely works. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
