How is your gorilla glass? - HTC Butterfly

Hi Guys,
Do you have scratches on your butterfly screen?
I can't find a decent protector that cover the screen fully in Singapore and now there is quite a few scatches on my screen. They are not visible when the screen is on but quite visible when they are off.
Quite disappointed with the quality of the gorilla screen.

The gorrila glass of Butterfly is very good (for me). My daughter use ball pen to draw on the monitor, no problem, her hand very dirty with alot of dust and play game (ninja fruit) on my phone, no problem... No scratch on my Butterfly upto now after 2 months.
Suggest for you:
If you want a screen protector, you could find the Nilkin or Rock protector for x920d, fit perfectly (except curved part at border of the screen). I just have free protector included in box when I bought the Nilkin backcover and just install for some days, quite good, fit, nice, clean and clear,

I have several nasty scratches on my glass. My S3 did a much better job than my butterfly in resisting scratches.

I am using the nillkin screen protector for x920d but still doesn't fit nicely.... it can't even cover the entire screen that is the display part....so i understand what deweylim is experiencing. I"m so tempted to tear it off..but then again.....scratches....:S scary...

any remedies we can use on the scatches? sigh..
It is just a 2 month old phone..

Well I must admit, Gorilla Glass sucks pretty much. Despite all fancy videos posted on Youtube.
My old Desire S once was near to me when I peeled tangerine. Sprays from the peel fallen on the screen and i didn't notice that. Of course I cleaned it later and glass looked like new... but since then it catches grease very fast and in nasty stains. Looks awful.
Butterfly first impressed me very much with its grease-repelling surface. But hell, one time I put my phone in same pocket with car keys and boom! here's scratch. Damned keys made of soft metal, that unable to scratch even regular glass, suddenly was hard enough to scratch Gorilla Glass2?? Couldn't believe that, but it's the fact.
Anyway, it looks like guys from Corning Glass have lost something very important in their researches.
I think I won't buy next phone unless it has new sapphire glass. Hope it won't be same joke as Gorilla Glass

I tried today using a strop loaded with some high grit compound from a bar that i use to strop my single bladed razor and knives seem to remove the scratches from my screen. high grit as in ~6-12k i actually don't know. But somewhere there because it gives my razor blades a polished mirror finish. Not a perfect mirror but enough for you to realise that you have a pimple on your forehead.
I got my screen looking like I just got it.
Remember to try on some corner of the screen first to make sure it doesn't scratch it then move on to your actual screen!!! I don't want to be blamed for screens that look like the surface of a chopping board! :cyclops:
I'm dissapointed like the rest of you with the resistance of this screen.
Hope your screen stropping works out fine! I'm happy with mine

The black borders surrounding the screen on my Butterfly is already faded less than a month after I got it. It was really disheartening the first time I saw it.

how does it fade? I don't think its meant to fade. I'm pretty sure that you can get your phone replaced by whoever sold it to you. that's a defect with the craftsmanship of the phone.

Gorilla glass is not so good. And it has nothing to do with butterfly. Gorilla glass on my previous sgs3 was bad I wore the phone only in my pocket and cared of it very good, but on the glass were scratches.

The one place I like Gorilla Glass better than others out there is the feel and texture ... what I mean is like keep rubbing your finger on an iPhone/Asus/etc and same thing on a Gorilla Glass, the others will get high friction very quickly whereas Gorilla one stays smoother longer ...
Its because of the glass texture that you can see if you see at the phone at a horizontal angle in light

phone's almost 6 months here and screen's fine. except for a dent on the side when it fell once.

There're actually a few things that gorilla glass can't handle, like most common is Quartz aka 'sand'

Totally fed up with screen protectors

I have now bought eight of the things from two sources (the HTC brand and the five for £2 ones from Amazon) and not one of them fit properly. All were too big, by which I mean that there was not enough margin either side to ensure that they didn't overlap and bubble. And cutting a tiny strip off doesn't work either - the pressure of the stanley knife seems to put the plastic under tension, so that it doesn't bed down.
Thoroughly fed up with it.
My HTC branded screen protector fits perfectly on my Desire though.
Only had bubble around the round hole on the upper right.
Here here, used the same ones as you, the touch after is perfect, but there just crap everything else.
Also used invisable shield on the screen, and just horrible to use.

Don't bother with a screen protector?
In a year I haven't used screen protectors on any of my capacitive screened phones (i8910, HD2, Desire), not a scratch on any of them. Just be sensible and don't keep the phone in the same pocket as keys and you should be fine...

I've got the 2 dollar ones of amazon too and they fit great. Just perfect if u can get it lined up propper it will fit exactly. It took me 5 tries but evantualy i got 1 lined up properly.
just getting my desire today! but a word from the wise, a few weeks ago I was scrabbling under desks patching phone cables with my touch hd in my pocket, when I finally surfaced noticed a great big, deep scratch on my screen, probably from a desk leg or something. You could run your fingernail down it and it really felt like the glass had scratched. With big panic I gently lifted off the screen protector only to find that the deep scratch had not gone through to the glass. A fresh protector and it was as good as new.
I have already ordered protectors for my desire... well worth the money.

But I sympathize with the OP. I've tried a Martin Fields one, and a Brando anti glare one and I wasn't happy with either. Got some of those cheap amazon ones en route, but I think I'm going naked this time around. I was quite happy with the HTC ones on my Hero though.
Not had any issues with my Martin Fields one, gets a bit grubby but a quick wipe and its fine - also have it in it's case and screen facing inwards in my pocket so shouldn't have any issues...never had any issues before with screen issues in the past, though
FWIW, I'm exactly the same.
I bought the invisible shield protector, and tbh, so far I'm quite dissappointed in it.
Firstly, it's very tough to install, without getting dust particles underneath - I didn't get opportunity to do the "steamy room" trick as had been suggested before on here.
That aside, the protector seems really quite thick - I'm sure it will offer decent protection, but the touchscreen effect is really poor by comparison to an unprotected screen.
The question I have is this - are there no "hard" screen protectors?
A "Gorilla Glass" sliver would be excellent to place on top of your screen.
Anyone heard of something like this?
The screen protectors they sell in verizon and best buy for the Droid Incredible are a joke. After some quick diggin around I finally found a good company to go with. I got the Boxwave Crystal Clearview Screen Protectors for my Incredible two days ago and cant tell i even have it on my phone. Fits great, covers entire front of phone minus the earpiece and optical trackpad on phone. Went on first try, absolutely no air bubbles! Comes with a lint free cloth, should you encounter any air bubbles...The cloth prevents you from scratching the screen protector when removing any air bubbles. Also cleans the screen protector to perfection. I recommend Boxwave to anyone who is fed up of orange peel, misfitting, or screen protectors with clarity/quality issues. Boxwave also has has an antiglare/anti-fingerprint screen protector. Check and see what they have for the Desire. Good Luck.

I got a generic screen protector free with a gel case on eBay and I have to say, I think it's the first one I've put on WITHOUT any bubbles on it (and hence the first screen protector that's actually likely to stay on a device I own for more than 10 minutes ) Only think I don't like is that it makes the screen a bit less 'slippy' - it's still not bad, and to be honest I don't think I'll ever like the screen finish on the Desire when compared to the unscratchable, always smooth glass on my old iPhone...
I had inivisiable shield on, took me 3 times to install it and finally got it pretty much perfect,
then as you do, i got a key and scratched along it to show it off to some mates, so then one of my mates decided hey lets get a key and dig it right into it to make a big scratch down the middle!
Looked at ordering a replacement , but still had to pay $4 postage, ontop of the £1.50 my bank would charge for it being from the US. so i thought not worth it.
Though when i took it off it did protect the screen! not a scratch on it.
Here mate. Try these: 140397585852 on ebay.
I initially got a generic one from the three shop and it was rubbish. Very plastic and scratched very easily.
I got these off ebay and I am very impressed with it! It has a very good finish to the surface. Very similar to the bare screen. Also they are actually slightly smaller than the glass screen area so very easy to fit. Also they are very easy to fit and got no dust or bubbles!
Pack of 6. Bargain!

I agree. I have come to peace with using my phones without because I think there is a bigger risk of me getting angry and busting my phone when i try to apply the protector than there is scrathing the screen without

Well that's the trick. The protectors are easy to damage so that you buy new ones and each time think 'phew that saved me' when in fact almost all the time there would have been no damage to the screen anyway.

I don't think the scratch would be visible even without the protector. The protector is some soft material which can get a deep cut like scratch just because its soft. I bet it wouldn't be visible on the screen if you had none either as long as the phone is in your pocket covered by jeans or whatever you have on your ass and the desk inst really made out from pure metal with sharp edges. You would sooner break it then scratch in normal case scenario.

Screen protectors? Gorilla glass?

A long time ago I saw news for this phone that it uses gorilla glass.. is it true?
Because I just got the phone and the screen protector on it sucks. Thick, a bit fuzzy, and makes it less sensitive. I am seriously tempted to pull it off right now.
Has anyone gone without screen protectors? and how are your screens?
Gorilla glass or not, it's still wise to put a layer of protection on the display. It is scratch resistant but not scratch proof.
Am using a matte, anti-fingerprint screen protector and have no problem with screen sensitivity.
some say yes, some say no...

i would say yes
Last year while skiing I fell tearing open my jacket and spilling my HTC Hero onto the slope (unannounced to me) where it slid down the piste face down until a kindly Spaniard found it and returned it to me.
The body itself all around the screen had been ground away, but the entirely unprotected screen was utterly untouched.
Within moments of getting my Desire S up and running I had it knocked out of my hand by a friendly dog, it landed face down in gravel. Once again there was not a mark on it.
The only time I should have used a screen protector was on my old P800 with its soft resistive screen.
The moral of the story, screen protectors for capacitive screens are the biggest con in the world. Just don't keep your phone in a bag full of diamonds or anything.

Out of interest which protector are you using?
wow, that post and story makes me want to rip the screen protector off even more. other than seeing a lot of cracked screens, i havent really heard off scratched htc screens.
videos like this help too:
http://techielobang.com/blog/2009/1...-test-for-htc-hd2-feel-the-pain-video-within/
but i guess it's this paranoia.. one scratch will ruin it forever..
i disagree, i was realy carefull not to sscratch my phone around the house why i was waiting for my screen protector off ebay, but ive ended up with a hairline scratch on the screen. You can only see it at certain angles and when a protector on you cant see it but i would recomend a screen protector to keep it safe as the smallest thing can ruin it.
I'm a nudist. Trusted Gorilla Glass on my previous Nokia C6-01. And trusting it on the Desire S. I don't have a protector case either.
When I moved from resistive touch sensors (Windows Mobile) to capacitive (HTC Hero), I stopped using screen protectors. Well, it turns out that the screen doesn't scratch badly, it's very tough, but after months using it hairline scratches do appear, although they are only visible with the light at certain angle.
So I once again I use screen protectors. This way when it's time to sell my current device to get a new one, the screen is 100% perfect. And I don't worry much if I have to clean the screen with my shirt.
I just bought invisiblesheild from zagg.com. I also got a 25% voucher if anyone wants it? not sure if it includes all items in store
however the contact actually covers the camera and sensor/light which does worry me a bit. I was given a chinese brand one which had a dip so the film didnt cover the camera. but it was crap, but the design was better

Totally with you on the protector case as well. Why buy a beautiful slim phone and then make it fat and ugly by fitting a case?
That said, I have ordered a case but intend to treat it like a condom and only put it on when I need it.
That way, next time I try to impress a girl by falling face first down a mountain, my phone at least will remain unblemished.
C'mon people, liberate yourselves, take it all off! Your phone is a beautiful thing, don't hide it away!
Buy a sock... or some small bag. I don't really see any reason to have it packed when you are using it (if you are not playing sports with it).

I find that the best advice for phone protection is simply not to use the device when you had a few beers (or several!)
I have two scratches on the outside of my desire s and both are caused by drinking related accidents! I see a direct correlation between phone damage and UK bank holidays !
Luckily the curved raised lower lip of this phone means that when dropped you have to be quite unlucky to scratch its face!
it sure has gorilla glass as you can find in the official site of gorilla glass

i found a test about the hardness of the screen on mp3 players i think it may be useful as i have seen many people asking if a screen protector is required
http://anythingbutipod.com/2009/04/glass-screen-durability-test-a-lesson-on-the-mohs-hardness-scale/
i myself use a screen protector as i am scared that sand may scratch it...
but mine does not reduce the touch sensitivity or the clearness of the screen but it seems to be a fingerprint magnet...
iv seen a hammer and a knife ....
ITS ALLMOST UNBREAKABLE Gorilla glass.
search youtube .... its there.

lol I went without screen protectors for a couple for weeks. was very happy, the screen looked vibrant and sharp.
but lo and behold! today I found a tiny scratch. Probably my own stupid mistake, I put it in my bag without the case, even though i had a case for it in the bag.
but it's ok though. Not really obvious unless you try to look for it. when the screen is lit up, its pretty much nonexistent. Plus.. electronic objects will go out of date someday right

HTC Sensation Durability & Protection

Hello, I'd like to collect some opinions here about the durability of the Sensation and whether you have a case/screen protector on it.
I just want to know if it is worth putting a case on, because I didn't have one on the desire and I dropped it one good time in the middle of the road and a whole piece came off the top right edge so I wish I had a case on it.
However, my friend has dropped his Wildfire (without case or screen protector) like 150 times in every place you can imagine and it has almost no signs of abuse!
So, if anyone has managed to drop it completely bare rolleyes, please reply here and say if you got any scratches etc...
I've got a couple of nicks on the paintwork of the case, around the edges where it meets the screen. The fact that I've not exactly been heavy handed with the thing leads me to believe that it's going to flake away in those places over time.
I've ordered an official case however so should get that soon and will let you know. I want a bit more grip/grrrrr to the phone so will be happy with that as I'm always scared of dropping the thing at the moment. It's so nice, but so smooth!!
I dropped the Sensation onto tarmac while out on a bike, CardioTrainer reports 30km/h. A day before the case arrived of course.
It bounced a few times, the teflon coating took some grazes on the 4 corners, the screen and back was untouched, the phone was still working, totally unaffected. I touched up the corners with some pewter coloured Plasti-Kote paint, you'd have to look close to notice anything.
If I had a gel-case I think there'd have been no damage at all, the unibody is really strong.
The nice thing is the cover surrounds the entire screen, and can be replaced. I may do this when the cost drops below £45.

Ouch, that was pretty hard but it seems that the phone's pretty well built if you fixed it with some painting. Btw, that's how I fixed (somehow) my Desire after that drop. Anyways, I won't be putting a case or screen protector on it because I've seen a lot of videos and proof of how strong the Gorilla Glass is and if I get any scratches on the rest of the phone I can just replace the whole cover (on ebay you can find it pretty cheap).
PS: How that damn multi-quote works?! I still haven't figured it out
I have already without dropping I must add scuffed the screen a little bit, dont even know how given it has just been going into my pocket, I have emailed a couple of the premium screen protector suppliers zagg and wrapsol and they are going to produce a screen protector that accommodates the curved edges of the screen which should be interesting.

[Q] Are You Using a Screen Protector?

Hi
New - just got my G2x
Are U guys using a screen protector?
I think it's a Gorrila Glass, so I am not sure if this means I don't need a screen protector. They usually suck so I would probably prefer not to have one.
What do you think?
Thanks
Dad bought my G2x for me as a surprise early birthday present. He went and got the Invisible Shield screen protector from one of those booths at the mall installed before he gave me the phone. Also got me a dark gray hard cover case.
The screen protector and case (although bulky) has done my phone well. Better to be safe than sorry.
I used to use Invis. Shield, but it greatly degraded the quality of the screen IMO. And it's expensive as hell for what it is. So I went and ordered some cheap ones from Amazon. 10 for 1 buck. It covers the whole screen and doesn't look like my screen has a protector. It does its job so I'm happy with it.
Stealth shieldz is a good screen protector can't tell I even have one on and there cheap via Amazon
Same day I picked up my g2x I put a screen protector on it, a universal one I cut down to size. I ordered the stealth shieldz from amazon after reading alot of good things about them. Should be in in the next couple days
Unless you do what I did and STAND on the screen grinding it into rocks, it won't scratch. Of you do, a little piece of plastic sheeting isn't likely to help much.

With the gorilla glass, it will resist scratches from metal very well.
Other minerals however will scratch it. Sand in your pocket, rocks, stuff like that.

I don't use a screen protector. I really don't see why it would be necessary for me. The phone sits in my pocket, and I rarely have rocks and gravel in there.
I just left the plastic cover that came new with the phone. Never remove it, six months already my phone look new...
G2x Weapon 3.0 R1
I hate screen protectors. They take your beautiful screen and reduce the visible light output and often makes the text harder to read. The Gorilla glass is incredible. I have never scratched any phone with Gorilla glass. You really don't need a screen protector for these phones. I bought mine second hand and it had a perfect screen. I have had it about four months and it still has a perfect screen. If a phone doesn't have Gorilla glass I put a screen protector on it. But if it has Gorilla glass I happily do not use one.
I've never dropped my phone and and I still got a small scratch. It's not noticeable unless you look very closely, but I've been using a screen protecter ever since, just to be safe.

Didnt feel like reading all the post but i always use a protector on all touch screens. Dont care what the glass is made of it can be scratched. Gorilla glass can be scratched. I have 2 small very light scratch on my phone because i used it the day before my protectors gave in the mail.
I don't. There's a small scratch from being kicked across concrete. It's barely noticeable, not at all when the screen is on. Plastic just doesn't have the same smoothness as the glass does.
I use a Clarivue anti-glare screen protector, not because I'm afraid of the screen getting scratched but because I can't stand the reflections and fingerprint smudges on the bare glass. The Clarivue protector does not degrade the image quality much (about the minimum possible for an anti-glare protector, based on my experience) and makes the phone MUCH easier to use in the car when it's not acting like a mirror.
After six months of using a Swype-style keyboard (SlideIt), the keyboard area was getting polished and shiny, but the Clarivue protectors come with a lifetime warranty, so I got a new pack for just the price of shipping ($3.00, if I recall) and the phone is back to its non-reflective self again.
The only downside to the Clarivue protectors is that they're very tall, so you have to be extremely precise in positioning when you're installing one.

Actually, I forgot to mention it in my immediately-preceding comment, but smoothness is one of the reasons I use a screen protector, too: with the bare screen, unless my finger is perfectly dry, trying to slide it over the glass is difficult; it keeps sticking and jerking. With the Clarivue antiglare protector, it's like sliding your finger over a very smooth piece of paper -- no sticking and no jerking, much more comfortable than the bare glass.
This varies with different protectors. Before I remembered the Clarivue lifetime warranty, I bought some cheap antiglare protectors from Amazon. I installed one and threw it away after about 30 seconds, because it was really hard to slide my finger across it -- no comparison in any way with the Clarivue.
Screen protectors were originally made for resistive touch screens because of how delicate their screens were. They've continued making them for capacitive screens because they follow the older saying "there's a sucker born everyday".

Honestly I haven't even worried about where I put my phone or in my pockets with my keys, etc. I don't have a single scratch. Any even if I did, it's so unnoticeable that I can't tell you with 100% certainty that I do have a scratch.
That being said, screen protectors don't let your fingers slide as nicely.

Ah, so it may have been the ones I've tried. I'll look into that brand. But for me it's the exact opposite. My finger doesn't stick to the glass at all, but catches on screen protectors. Kinda weird how that works.
I used to have the one that came with the phone on there until a couple weeks ago when it developed a little bubble at the edge which got bigger and bigger 'til I peeled the whole thing off. The G2x screen is fantastic without it. Very happy with the way it looks, and I trust jboxer so I'm gonna keep in as is.
Every touch screen phone Ive ever had I order screen protectors and put them on.I wont use the phone until I get one on.Well besides around the house.

i'm using one, at first it will feel like your thumb sticks and hard to swipe, but that's just because its new. after that it will feel as if you're touching your actual screen again. i recommend you use it. i know the sensation has corning gorilla glass, but that didn't stop some little scratches from getting onto my screen.
i didn't get what you meant by "glue"...as it's not glue, it's just some sort of a magnetized sheath, i don't know what it's called exactly. so if you didn't want the screen protector anymore, it's pretty easy to take off. no worries.
Thanks i will try it

No screen protector, no case. It's how phones were designed to be used.
most screen protector don't have glue on it. because of sensation curvy glass, you will get bubble at the four corners.
so you'll be better of with the one with glue. later if you need to change it, just use damp cloth to wash off the glue.

Actually with some practice you can reduce the bubbles, I only have one tinnny one of the top right curved part of the screen.
As for screen protectors as a general they are useful, the second I stuck one on the loved the feel of the screen and still do. However make sure you get a good brand, my current one is fill of scratches and then as I use my phone some grease or oil whatever it is gets into the cracks and then it all turns to ***t.

I like my phones like I like my women! All natural baby!!!
Personally i don't feel like those screen protectors are needed, just a case for any sorts of scratches, screen or not and you can keep your hands busy with the case
Hi personally I use Skinomi, its self healing, Lifetime guarantee, crystal clear, and a LOT Less expensive than Zagg , I do the wet install. Dries without streaking or bubbles ! It's amazing. Tough but made for touchscreen. Does not interfere with sensitive touchscreen. I really love the fact it's self healing because if you get a scratch, it heals right up and you cannot see it anymore! This screen protector is long lasting ! Best protector I've ever tried! I think protectors Are great because this device is expensive and one slip or mistake and it CAN get scratched! It's worth protecting your device! Because scratches WILL happen and is its best to scratch protector rather than the device! I think you will love SKINOIMI! Just follow the directions provided. I was amazed at the quaility of this product. Also the price is right! I think you tube has a video of installation if you like to watch. I'll never use anything but Skinomi Again! Highly recommend this product!
