I own a sony ericsson arc s at the moment and am due an upgrade soon but cannot decide on what phone to get. I love my sony and i have used sony ericsson over the past 10 years (i think its time for a change). I found my arc easy to mod/upgrade even with a locked bootloader and would like my next phone to as easy. There are a few excellent phones out like the xperia z, htc one, samsung s3 and s4 and the nexus 4. Does anyone own any of these phones if so what are your opinions. Should i jump ship or stick with good old sony??? I have read reviews on many phones but need to get proper users thoughts.
Any thoughts, reviews, ideas are appreciated.
Cheers
Phil

All the mobiles you've mentioned are excellent phones which are easy to upgrade/mod.
They are in active development. But the new phones which are released (about to be released) are excellent in terms of all features and devs are working hard for custom firmwares and other deep options. So it depends on your personal choice. Anything you own depends on your own personal likeness.

well i'll always go for HTC... i'm a kind of WM fan but no matter what i'll always choose HTC over samsung or sony ericsson... just my thought...
thank u for your idea. Yeah i learnt that htc is very very pretty brand. But in Turkey, HTC's technical support is very bad. i broke my Hero's screen and i searched a service that can repair it for a week. finally i found one but it was very expensive. because there isn't any screen to be changed. so they bought from another country. luckily my parents can afford this. i'm a lucky kid in Turkey economically. but samsung and sony ericsson, there are lots of technical service for them ! :S i love HTC too, but in Turkey it's not popular...

well u think i should buy an htc. which htc can it be ? desire ? nexus one ?
Desire and Nexus is pretty good.
If you are willing to wait for a couple of months, you should probably get the HTC desire HD aka HTC ace.

my hero isn't working full function anymore. it fell down from my hand :S screen is ok but everything is not ok ... i can't wait couple months i think ... =/
I've been looking at new phones for the past month lol so here are some ideas:
Acer S100 Liquid E: Cheap/mid to high range phone/underclocked 750mhz snapdragon/LCD/256mb ram (350$) "its the poor mans decent android phone"
HTC Desire/Nexus One: similar good all around phones/1ghz snapdragon/AMOLED/512~546mb ram (550$ newish 400ish used)
X10: insane camera (8mp)/1ghz snapdragon/256mb ram (490$ new)
LG Optimus Z: not yet released but a beautiful phone
Acer Stream: expensive and the same as the X10 =\ (600$)
Samsung Galaxy S: fastest and best phone on the market currently
personally I'm getting the galaxy S on contract soon since in the long run it'll be cheaper and better than buying a new nexus one
If you're intent on getting a HTC manufactured phone I suggest the Nexus one, since it will probably get software updates quicker than the Desire

there are no contracts when buying phones in Turkey and there aren't any Galaxy S with official selling. If i'll buy it, i'll buy it from another country.
What about samsung Wave ? It's very sexy
htc desire - a no brainer android(you cant go wrong with it..just close your eyes and buy one) but i dont like the pinkish tint on the AMOLED screen and i am not a fan of its look.
xperia x10 - by far the best looking smartphone (according to me)..the screen is gorgeous..but 1.6 is outdated and lack of MT may be a deal breaker..
in the end, it comes down to your personal taste..i went for xperia x10 because of the looks and better sony tech support in my country.. and yes, this was when desire wasnt OFFICIALLy available..
and about samsung WAVE..it has bada OS..if thats not a dealbreaker for you..this is one of the best VFM smartphone iv seen yet..

Hello,
I'm not very keen on starting this kind of thread, but comparative information is pretty scarce on the internet.
I'm planning on getting my girlfriend an Android phone soon and I'm stuck between these 3 models due to my budget:
1. Sony-Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini
2. Samsung Galaxy Mini S5570
3. Motorola BackFlip
The Xperia was what she originally saw and liked, but in my opinion its not very good. The Samsung appears to be the safest bet, and the Motorola is something i've just seen 10 minutes ago and seems very good on paper (hardware-wise) but that screen seems too small and the keypad is not something she (or i) would like very much. Plus that flip mechanism i'm sure will not last very long.
Now i turn to you, the community, for opinions. I'm a bit stuck between these. Any input would be great!
Thanks!

The best for me is x10 mini...
1. X10 mini has many stuff u cn do n u cn root it n update to 2.3 cyanogen... Cons: lag of multitouch n qvga
2. Galaxy mini has ginger update too, but i dunt understand too much abt rooting it... Cons: qvga
Best : Able to overclocked to 800mhz
3. Backflip... I tink is lame...
But for a budget hvga fone, i recommended optimus one or x8...

Thank you for your reply. I know about Optimus One and it is superior to those 3 that i've mentioned. Unfortunately it's $35 US more expensive than my budget (my budget being what those 3 cost). This is a spontaneous decision and there is not a lot of money to be spent. She doesnt care that much about the technical side but she would enjoy the apps and everything and i could certainly help her discover more about Android. She prefers the smaller devices as well. So no optimus one.
I might just end up with the samsung. Im still not sure.

My wife has a backflip, I got it for her in July and its been durable but broken a few otterbox cases (just the front piece). The best rom has been cyanogen mod 7.1 even tho it frequently freezes it has performed way better than the stock 1.5 & 2.1 that Motorola provides. If a good phone is above your budget, just spend the extra lil bit. It'll be worth it in the end.

I got sick and tired of waiting for Jelly Bean and the issues that Htc one X has from the start. This phone has got me lost because of its GPS issues, Had to get external GPS .etc. But now Im thinking about budget of £350 or little bit more. And I will have to get it as Pay As you go phone. So, which phone.
I really really like Sony Xperia Z but I don't know how much it is going to cost.
I like Nexus 4 because its latest and It falls into my budget.
I don't want to get windows phone. Because I dont like it
I dont want to get HTC, as I have decided HTC one x is first and last of htc for me. Unless they bring out really amazing phone
I dont mind samsung galaxy 3 or note2 but I don't think they are expensive?
Please help me out!
:highfive:
I have heard the xperia z is going to be a real nice high end phone but I would recommend the note 2 simply because of the s-pen

if you like xperia and want a nice budget phone try the xperia t, tx or v
Ok thank you i will try there
IMHO u shuold give a try at one of the last Xperia Phone, they are very well build and in my opinion the are kind a standard for quality on the android scene
For your budget you could try the Motorola RAZRi.
I know I'll get flamed or locked for this, but from what I gather this phone is our exact equivalent+ sd card slot. Am I right?

Having said that I havemt heard any mention of it in the "hoxl sux I'm buying a gs3 or nexus whatever". I'm curious as to why this is?
Anyone considered it?

At this point, with the One X being about 9 months old, I'd be looking at a phone that is more of a significant upgrade to the One X. Not looking to upgrade right now, but more likely after my One X is a year old (this May). Maybe something along the lines of the upcoming M7.
I've never been a huge fan of the Sony devices. They don't look too shabby. But they don't seem to be very widespread, which also causes them to have pretty weak developer support.
I haven't followed the Sony devices very closely. But I remembered a while back they had pretty locked down bootloaders, which really stifled dev activity. Is this still the case?
The Xperia T also looks like it might be a bit more clunky (or at least not as sleek as the One X) and the display might not be as nice. So I'm not sure if I'd even call it an equal. But that is just based on the review you linked.
The Z looks pretty nice, but I'm sticking with the X until it dies on me

They offer online unlocking very similar to HTC however AT&T devices are not unlockable (sound familiar?). Unfortunately no one has found a workaround for those devices
Sony is quite good about working with the FreeXperia team, providing timely sources, submitting code to cyanogenmod and aosp, donating devices, etc. But you're right that the talent pool is still smaller, so progress isn't as quick because of how much work the good devs are shouldering

Ditto!
I had an xperia x10, great phone that came with 2.1 and we even got GB! The problem is that Sony went good too late and everyone decided to abandon them. IMO Sony devices are the sexiest phones on the market and as said above, they help devs.
I'm also awaiting the M7 or "HTC One".. I'm loving the new leaked pictures, even though its taking an apple approach. If they include the new snapdragon 800 series processors, I'm preordering

Unfortunately the Snapdragon 800 won't be in production until this summer so I don't see that happening for the new One
I've always loved sony phones since my old t-637 so naturally I looked into the T but every review I read had something negative to say about the battery life. I'm going to ride my one x til the wheels fall off, however the xperia z has definitely caught my eye. First phone I've seen since the hox to make me even think about upgrading.
The one Sony device I've had (the X10) was pretty good at the time I had it. The camera was great (especially for a device made in like 2009) and I liked the UI a lot. I was on an Xperia S rom port and it was pretty smooth for a device that old. Not sure about more recent Sony phones though

No , this not the case anymore . Sony is only company apart from nexus line which allow you to unlock boot loader easily from the tool they posted on their website ..they won xda phone of the year for 2012 because they are very friendly with unlocking and rooting stuff .. They are actively working to get Sony devices into asop ..

Well it's time for a new phone since my old Galaxy S2 went in pieces on my job.
I have a really dirty and tough job, so phones comes and goes, and always goes in pieces.
There's only one demand i have with the new phone. The bootloader should be unlocked so it's rootable, and preferably able to switch rom and kernel.
There's two phones atm i'm looking at, and it's Galaxy S4 Active or Xperia z.
I noticed that there's lack of Roms for the S4A atm, but that could change in the future? Xperia Z lacks the battery time, but not the end of the world.
Any advice?
Go with Samsung Grand quarto
.

Hmm never heard about that one. Seems like it's not even available here in Sweden
Hi,
since you have a rough job i'd say go for the more durable - dust/water proof phone, the xperia
I'd get the S4, it's a Samsung and just about every phone of theirs can be rooted and loaded up with something custom eventually.
