I was just wondering, is the only way to be able to receive updates from Samsung is to be on the stock rom, I currently own a rooted Asus tablet with a stock rom But I can no longer receive Updates through Asus because of unlocked bootloader . So all in all I guess I'm asking how do the updates work on this phone with, root, unlocked boot loader, stock/custom roms. Thanks.

It's all the same for all devices, unlocked bootloader you don't get OTA. If you're using custom/stock rom with unlocked bootloader, you just have to wait for a repack stock rom or update custom rom. If you have rooted pure stock rom you should able to receive OTA and use OTA root keeper to preserve root. If you modify your build.props or removed system apps, the update will failed. Hope that answer your quesiton.

So from what I understand as long as Im on the stock rom even if its rooted I can receive updates and I need to use ota root keeper to continue to be rooted after an OTA update, correct?

I should probably add, if I had just rooted and got twrp and made a backup of the stock rom, then flashed a custom rom and if I wanted to update could I just reflash the backup of the stock in twrp to be able to update, this would be for if they Didn't have a custom rom out for the latest update. As of right now I have a tablet on ics but I cannot update to jb because I don't have the jb boot loader or whatever, but say I was to flash a stock Asus rom on ics And use OTA rootkeeper Would I then be able to flash jb custom roms? I assume the OTA update from ics To jb installs the correct boot loader instead of having to do it manually from a cimputer, big thanks for any help.

is it rooted android can update official ics??
If you are on a custom ROM, no. If it is only stock ROM with root, maybe. Typically, you need a stock recovery to accept OTA updates. If you used the HTCdev unlock method, you might still have stock recovery. If you used Revolutionary, most likely you have a custom recovery.
There's no way to recieve the update via ota while rooted unless your stock rooted but I'm pretty sure a dev will make a custom rom thats fully stock with the lates ICS build for the Sensation
if you are using stock rom

Im using rooted stock rom.....and i receive automatic update yesterday for ics... After updating the root was not remove but the boot loader is now s on.....
you should flash stock RUU first to get everything completely stock, especially the recovery.
no need to s-on. s-off is fine. and do not flash any custom recovery this time!
leave it stock and unrooted.
then you can apply ICS OTA after applying first OTA until ICS OTA.
after that you can flash custom recovery and root your device.

Haha yes, i have faith in the devs from our forum. OTA updates will come attached with sense and other bloatware, not exactly something I want to deal with.
if i flash back to stock rom can get the official update??
still on old custom rom not the ICS version

With the highest possibility - Yes!
So i think i have the same question.
I have my official stock rom rooted on my htc sensation, no custom rom installed.
But when i try to update to ICS (i get the option to update over the air) it gives me the "error" screen showing an android man, besides a warning mark.
So is this superuser blocking the update or something else?
And how can i update to ICS.
(i don't care if i lose my root, the phone can be rooted after the update)..

Just restore stock recovery and intact stock Rom file (not delete any apps in original stock rom) and you can update via OTA. But the bootloader could be lock again.

If you're rooted it is NOT advised to apply the OTA as it's more than likely going to screw your phone up. You're better off just going to a custom ROM instead
I was planning to flash Jelly but decided that I'm happy with ICS and liam wilng to wait for the OTA update. What's the process for preparing for the OTA update?
The method I used to root the phone was I believe the easy one click root debugfs-root. I used EZ-Unlock to unlock the bootloader. I also installed EZ-Recovery. Thanks.
Flash back to stock before applying any ota from Verizon

Give this a try. I just posted this in the development section. Original OTA updates modified to work on rooted, custom recovery, bootloader unlocked devices with Google Wallet and NFC libraries installed.

(edit) If you don't have the latest SW for the S3 yet you can apply those OTA updates on your rooted, custom recovery, etc. device. When the Jelly Bean OTA comes down I'll be sure to make a rooted, custom recovery-friendly version of that OTA as well.
Ok, I am running a stock rom rooted with no frozen apps. When the OTA tries to install it fails and when I try to use Kies the message " Your device does not support the update of Software via Kies" or something to that effect. I have never unlocked the bootloader, flash roms, or installed custom recovery on the device. Could I possible use OTA rootkeeper to unroot then check to see if the OTA will download and install? If that does work would I be able to restore the root? I don't guess I really need the new OTA but I want to be able to get JB when it comes out without any issues. Just as an added not it is currently running VRALG7...

Hello everyone,
I'm a noob to rooting and the whole flashing custom ROMs.
I rooted my Verizon GS3, installed ROM Manager, and flashed CwM Recovery. I then installed a "stock recovery" file in hopes of receiving OTA updates from Verizon w/o losing root. However, after installing the stock recovery, I lost root access.
My question is: can I receive Verizon OTAs on a rooted phone? If so, how? Any help is greatly appreaciated.
BTW, anyone know when JB 4.1 will be pushed to vz customers OTA?

Yes you can receive OTAs on a rooted stock setup, but you want to block these OTAs using something like OTA root keeper and don't install these updates as it will break root, and can cause a bunch of other headaches and problems. If you really want stock wait till a dev roots the latest OTA update then flash that to keep root acess. It will likely be a while probably 2013 at the earliest before Verizon pushes the JB update. If you want JB take a look at a custom ROM such as CM 10.

There is a thread with a ota updater for stock rooted and unlocked users. It lets you stay rooted and unlocked and get the updates. Not sure if it works with a custom recovery flashed though. I think its in the android development thread

Two other possible Options:
Can try this from cj64: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1964502
might be more than you're looking for or not apply since you didn't mention about (un)locked bootloader.

Hey everyone,
So for the past couple of days I've been getting the notification that 5.1.1 has been downloaded and is ready to install, but I'm running a rooted stock ROM with CWM and ElementalX kernel, so I wasn't sure what would happen if I accepted the update. So my question to you all is just that; what will happen if I OTA update? I would imagine I'll lose root access and have to re-root, but would the OTA also flash a stock kernel and get rid of CWM? Or will the update create a load of problems since I'm not completely stock?
Thanks in advance for your help.
The OTA update will fail.
As of Lollipop, you have to have everything completely stock (including the recovery) to take an OTA update. You're better off just flashing another pre-rooted ROM or custom ROM which has been updated to 5.1.1.
