[Q] Rooted sensation can be update official ics?? - HTC Sensation

is it rooted android can update official ics??

If you are on a custom ROM, no. If it is only stock ROM with root, maybe. Typically, you need a stock recovery to accept OTA updates. If you used the HTCdev unlock method, you might still have stock recovery. If you used Revolutionary, most likely you have a custom recovery.

There's no way to recieve the update via ota while rooted unless your stock rooted but I'm pretty sure a dev will make a custom rom thats fully stock with the lates ICS build for the Sensation

if you are using stock rom

Im using rooted stock rom.....and i receive automatic update yesterday for ics... After updating the root was not remove but the boot loader is now s on.....

you should flash stock RUU first to get everything completely stock, especially the recovery.
no need to s-on. s-off is fine. and do not flash any custom recovery this time!
leave it stock and unrooted.
then you can apply ICS OTA after applying first OTA until ICS OTA.
after that you can flash custom recovery and root your device.

Haha yes, i have faith in the devs from our forum. OTA updates will come attached with sense and other bloatware, not exactly something I want to deal with.

if i flash back to stock rom can get the official update??
still on old custom rom not the ICS version

With the highest possibility - Yes!

So i think i have the same question.
I have my official stock rom rooted on my htc sensation, no custom rom installed.
But when i try to update to ICS (i get the option to update over the air) it gives me the "error" screen showing an android man, besides a warning mark.
So is this superuser blocking the update or something else?
And how can i update to ICS.
(i don't care if i lose my root, the phone can be rooted after the update)..

Just restore stock recovery and intact stock Rom file (not delete any apps in original stock rom) and you can update via OTA. But the bootloader could be lock again.

If you're rooted it is NOT advised to apply the OTA as it's more than likely going to screw your phone up. You're better off just going to a custom ROM instead

[Q] Help with installing roms from stock

Hey guys,
I'm relatively new to playing with Android roms, and currently have a HTC Sensation.
I've worked out the kernel that I want to use (SebastianFM Overclocked kernal), the rom that I want to use (AndroidRevolta - slimmed down Virtuous Inquisition) but I wondering about the firmware. My phone is current unrooted, running stock ICS. Do I need to upgrade the firmware before I can flash this rom?
Thanks
to install another rom firstly you have to be rooted
secondly if you want to flash a firmware manually you have to be S-OFF
now about the rom you want to use i think as far as i know requires the latest firmware

Yeah, I know that it needs to be rooted first.
I've just seen things that say you need the latest firmware to run ICS, and I wasn't sure if that came with the offical ICS update.

Yes. Firmware is updated with latest ICS update.
If you have latest ICS update then you dont need to flash firmware again.

Is the firmware flash only for phones that don't have an offical ICS update?
So I can just root, install CWM and flash kernal and rom?

OTA update wont run after going back to stock from MOD

Hi am having a problem after going back to telstra stock after being on rohans JB build 3. It was really bad at connecting on LTE so I wanted to go back to stock where I have less problems. So now the 4.0.4 OTA update is available which fixes the one of the main reasons I found a ROM, that stupid settings bar.
However when I reboot to install the OTA it just boots into TWRP (v 2.2.2). I cant manually apply update from within recovery. It just gives an error. If I reboot from recovery nothing is applied.
Android v 4.0.3, software version 1.89.841.9
Do I have to get rid off TWRP or find a RUU and and apply that image? Was there some boot locking thing I need to do through abd to get the OTA to work?

Pretty sure you have to relock your bootloader and run an RUU to get your phone to true stock. Then OTA. Although, if the RUU was based off 4.0.4 you wouldn't have to OTA. You can always re-ulock your phone after an RUU as long as you have your unlock token and/or super CID.
Did you just flash a stock ROM?
Also, pretty sure there are 4.0.4 stock ROMs out there that you could flash so you wouldn't have to relock your phone.

Thanks I restored a backup I made before flashing the ROM. Might try and find another ROM to see how 4G goes.
Fixing a connectivity issue on one custom ROM is not a good reason to go stock. I think the OTA needs stock recovery, so that is why you are getting stuck at recovery. Even if it works, you lose root. Its a step backwards, so why would you want to do that?
Just flash a ROM based on 4.0.4 from Development. You can pick a custom ROM, or a stock rooted one (safe to flash from TWRP), if you want stock.
If you are rooted, don't install a OTA or run RUU (unless you are trying to fix a soft brick). Good rule for any Android device.

[Q] updating device.

I was just wondering, is the only way to be able to receive updates from Samsung is to be on the stock rom, I currently own a rooted Asus tablet with a stock rom But I can no longer receive Updates through Asus because of unlocked bootloader . So all in all I guess I'm asking how do the updates work on this phone with, root, unlocked boot loader, stock/custom roms. Thanks.

It's all the same for all devices, unlocked bootloader you don't get OTA. If you're using custom/stock rom with unlocked bootloader, you just have to wait for a repack stock rom or update custom rom. If you have rooted pure stock rom you should able to receive OTA and use OTA root keeper to preserve root. If you modify your build.props or removed system apps, the update will failed. Hope that answer your quesiton.

So from what I understand as long as Im on the stock rom even if its rooted I can receive updates and I need to use ota root keeper to continue to be rooted after an OTA update, correct?

I should probably add, if I had just rooted and got twrp and made a backup of the stock rom, then flashed a custom rom and if I wanted to update could I just reflash the backup of the stock in twrp to be able to update, this would be for if they Didn't have a custom rom out for the latest update. As of right now I have a tablet on ics but I cannot update to jb because I don't have the jb boot loader or whatever, but say I was to flash a stock Asus rom on ics And use OTA rootkeeper Would I then be able to flash jb custom roms? I assume the OTA update from ics To jb installs the correct boot loader instead of having to do it manually from a cimputer, big thanks for any help.

[Q] How to install OTA with rooted, S-OFF, TWRP

A month ago I rooted the stock rom, S-OFF, and install TWRP. I tried another ROM, but it didn't really interest me. I realized, that I actually like the stock ROM.
However, now I want to install the 4.4.3 OTA update. Is that possible? If I follow the directions, the device reboots in to TWRP, but does not install the update.
How can I install the OTA update, if I have a custom recovery?

It appears it is impossible: http://teamw.in/officialota
I guess I will have to completely reflash.
First off, it's not impossible. There's a thread in here with firmware that you can use and update without the OTA. Second, this is the wrong sub-forum for questions.

I'm also trying to get to 4.4.3 but after trying to re install the old recovery, it tells me I can't do the OTA.
Jeez...if you guys have soff and twrp and whatnot just flash the stock rooted rom scott gave us. Simple as that. You'll find it here in the vzw one m8 android development section.
Or alternately, if you no longer require control of you device at the lowest levels then just flash dottats RUU and magically your phone will be 100% stock.
But yeah, wrong forum.

The reason to do the OTA, is because I am lazy. I don't feel like reinstalling all of my apps, etc. The OTA is a nice incremental upgrade.
Where can I find the stock recovery, and directions to flash back to it? It is my understanding, that if I do that, I can apply the OTA.

[Q] 4.4.4 OTA Update from 4.4.2 rooted and unlocked with Mods

Thank you guys in advance for your help but I just had a few questions. I am running 4.4.2 currently with the stock rom rooted and unlocked bootloader. I have however issued a few Mods such as extreme power saving and built in tether. Can I just load the 4.4.4 firmware and radios, switch back to stock recovery and take the OTA to 4.4.4 without having to wipe anything or since I have used some mods do I now have to wipe my device and put everything back after getting the 4.4.4 update. The reason I ask is I like having the stock features while just using google now launcher on top of sense. Also would any of you have a recommendation on a ROM to achieve this same thing so I dont have to go through this everytime I want to take the newest OTA if it is not possible to take without wiping.

Flash the ruu here. That will get you to 4.4.3 the easy way and make you 100% stock so you can take the ruu. Then flash twrp and flash su or the rooted Rom of your choosing.
The RUU is one way to go, although I would never update via OTA...
Another would be to flash the firmware and radios from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2723159
And then Scott's rooted stock rom from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2914922
He usually has them up a few hours after a new OTA has been released. Even better - try his stock, debloated CleanROM once it's out.
This way you can keep your recovery. You can even try to just flash the 4.4.4 firmware and radios and see if it runs your current 4.2 ROM ok. But I would not update the rom from version to version without a wipe.
The setup is the price to pay for getting a new and hopefully better Android version.
