Okay, so i bought a second hand Sensation XE today. I can't root it.
Whenever I try unlocked the bootloader it fails. It doesn't get a second in.
So I tried the Juopunutbear method, but that's driving me nuts as well. I also can't find a windows version anywhere.
I basically need to root so I can SIMUNLOCK my phone before tomorrow.
Any help? Is there any other easy root way?
Hboot is 1.27 and ICS firmware, and it is an XE, not normal.

Hi,
You need to be s-off to sim unlock.
Look HERE to root without using HTC method.
Yes, thank you for replying, but as I said they no longer support windows so I am unable to actually use that way of rooting. There is no windows version availbale.

Hi,
You will have to do it in Linux.
I don't have Linux and no-one I know does.

Hello,
I'm new to android and have been reading a lot. But not everything is clear.
With AlphaRevX you can s-off the desire s.
If you have 0.98.0000 and use AlphaRevX, will it still be 0.98.0000 or will it be upgraded to a higher number?
The desire s (gingerbread) can't be really rooted yet, only gingerbreak.
But to install a custom rom you don't need to be rooted, you only need s-off and goldcard?
Does anyone have an idea when htc will release a s-off tool or s-off bootloader?

The bootloader version number will be changed after alpharevx, to 6.something, to stop accidental bootloader down grading.
Ginger beak is the exploit that we use to achieve root, So it can be rooted!
You don't need gold card.
You're right in saying that you don't need root to flash custom, just soff and a recovery, CWM or EXT4
But you do need root to take the recommend pre custom backup
I don't see htc releasing unlocked boot loader to this device till at least late september as the schedule they've announced initially involves sensation and evo3d only

Thanks a lot, it is much clearer now.

So the only purpose of the goldgard is to downgrade the bootloader?

Yep, a pre-backup (a Nandroid backup) always helps and makes you feel slightly more secure when flashing!
Goldcards - I'm afraid that I'm not 100% sure about that.
A quote from @paulobrien @Modaco, "A GoldCard is a special SD card which, when inserted into your device, allows you to flash RUU (ROM Update/upgrade utility) files with a different CID to your own device. For example, if you own a T-Mobile branded device, this will allow you to flash a generic ROM."
As I don't own a network locked device I've never had to use one myself, so my knowledge about them is pretty thin.
Thanks, mine is also not a branded device.
Hi All.
Quick question, I have rooted my sensation and s-off'ed, sweet.
Here is me question, what happens if our friends at HTC update the part that made the s-off possible? Will we get the updates or will only the users who did not tinker with the firmware get them?
Cheers folks.
HTC has stated that there new HTC-DEV site will be where you will be able to S-off your device, its not gonna come in an OTA push, IMO revolutionary has got us S-off, so who care what HTC has coming for S-off....its a little late, besides if you S-off with HTC they want to document who is S-offing their devices.......eff em and just enjoy your no strings attached S-off.
Number 1...It is never a good idea to take an OTA on your phone if you have it rooted.
Number 2...OTA's may contain patches to exploits that were used to obtain s-off.
Number 3...OTA's may or may not s-on your phone depending on how the devs obtained s-off in the first place.
Moral of the story is if you want to maintain root never OTA
i own a sensation device
if i use this revolutionary tool to s-off, recovery and root, is it possible to s-on later? (e.g. to give my phone to htc service to be in warranty)
If i just use the ruuxxxxxx.exe for my device to put the official rom , the phone will be s-on again? or is there any other way?
and wht about official OTA updates? how is going to be achieved?
There is a way to to gain s-on again but it's risky atm. Look for the guide in the stickies in the development forum.
You will not get an OTA on a rooted custom ROM.. end of story!!
So enjoy

Yes it is possible to make you device s-on again just be sure to follow everything to the letter and don't screw up. Also why would you want to. If anything permanently root it and stick with that.

Can i root my asian sensation and keep my phone s-off? If so, how?
Are you serious? Hurrp Durrp use the search.
of course not
S-off means writing to /system. Root requires write access to /system in order to get the app + 18056377243 binary.
So no.

Technically the answer is YES on the Sensation because you can use the HTC unlock method to install a custom recovery and flash Superuser to give your current Rom root access without going S-Off.
But using Revolutionary to S-Off your phone is the superior method to use and gives you more options in the future.

Using the htc method still gets you to s-off, and then end goal the person doesn't want.
You cannot write to /system without some sort of s-off. And the htc way is one of the two ways to get s-off.

Whatever dude. The HTC Unlock method unlocks the boot loader, but it still reports S-Off as indicated by several posts in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16865964&postcount=71
When you boot into the unlocked boot loader, the boot loader commands have
special access to some of the partitions such as /system, but you are limited by what the commands can flash.
yup. the HTC method while gives you s-off doesn't allow you to root the phone or install a custom ROM.
I had read through the user guide at XDA, about the uninstall HTC SYNC. Uninstall HTC sync is on HTC phone or computer or both?
It is Rooting method for Samsung Galaxy S2 and HTC Sensation is different?

You only need to uninstall HTC Sync on your PC, not the phone.
Yes, the rooting process is different between SGS2 and HTC Sensation.
If i using Revolutionary tool to S-OFF and root the HTC Sensation, does it make changes on stock ROM, Kernel, driver (e.g 3G), etc?
It is Revolutionary tool compatible for all version of the HTC Sensation? Because i'm from Malaysia.
If my HTC Sensation got hardware problem need to claim warranty, can i unS-OFF and un-root it?

Doesn't change anything, you just get access to write to /system and all that good stuff. Yes revolutionary is compatible to all sensations.
You can also revert to s-on per the same guide to s-off.
If its a hardware problem that has absolutely nothing to do with software(like volume rocker falling off) then I don't c y it should b a problem claiming warranty regardless if ur s-off/on.

I understand that HTC will release a new update for all HTC device to unlock the bootloader.
Recently i just got an software update fromHTC. Software number is "1.45.707.1" running Android 2.3.4. It is this software number already unlock the bootloader?
If the bootloader already unlock do i need to S-OFF in order to root my HTC Sensation?
What are the different in between S-OFF and unlock bootloader?

The update itself doesn't automatically unlock the bootloader of all sensations...it only makes them compatible with HTC's unlock tool.
If you don't mind me asking, is there a reason that you seem to want to avoid the revolutionary unlock? It's generally regarded as the better method since its reversible and doesn't require you to reveal to HTC that you're unlocked.
I want root my HTC sensation on the safe way, so i need to do some research. Because i still new on rooting android device.
After S-OFF the bootloader, do i need to check compatible of baseband version and build number before i root the HTC sensation?
What i know is for Samsung Galaxy S2 need to check this.

IMHO, revolutionary is the safer method to unlock since you can reverse it for warranty purposes. Supposedly HTC will honor hardware warranty issues even if you use the official unlock but I can't confirm that (they did with my nexus one though). Why risk getting denied though?
AFAIK, all current bootloaders, radios (basebands), and ROMs are compatible with each other in the sense that it will work. Some radios work better with some roms but no combination that I'm aware of will result in a brick. It's not like the G1 days where you had to make sure that your radio was compatible with your SPL and flashing them in the wrong order would make the device unbootable.
So I will have to s-off with Windows and then I can root with my Mac ? Sorry for sounding dumb...... Just still stuck in iPhone land lol htc sensation with 2.3.4

You don't have to do anything to root unless you're going to stay on the stock rom. Custom roms are already rooted. To root a stock rom, you flash the root files from recovery, no pc needed.

Hi,
I was wondering how you would root a htc desire s hboot version 2.0.0002 with S-ON. Another question I had was on htcdev where I would like to unlock the bootloader on my phone the 'S' model isn't listed. Would it come under the desire or other phone models? Thanks
take other phone models since its a desire s and not a plain desire.
if you got your bootloader unlocked u need to downgrade the bootloader
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1318919
and continue with
http://revolutionary.io/
i didnt tried anythign of this yet but thats what id like to do with my desire s as soon as i got enough time
if youre happy with s-on you could go for the zergRush thing for temproot right after youre done with unlocking the bootloader with htcdev.
hope its correct. ive just started reading yesterady in here
€ or search for the superoneclick. same thing as the zergRush but much more easier to use

OK Thanks For Your Help
is it dangerous to do this?
im no pro in flashing and all this stuff but as long as you follow the instructions there should not be any prob. if theres any high risk in bricking the device or anything there will be an extra warning i guess.
oh and one big nogo i learned by my friends phone.... never ever pull the battery
and you lose the warranty by unlock with htcdev.
Ok thanks is it reversable when the bootloader has been unlocked? Thanks
I have now unlocked the bootloader so how do i root now?
if you just need root, check this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1390496
if u want s-off u need to downgrad the bootloader and go for revolutionary like i posted befor
€ and always edit your post if u need to add something . dont double post like you did
u just can re-lock your bootloader with htcdev but u cant go back to the normal locked. not 100%sure about this

The point of installing a rom is that they can be smoother and more customisable, they also get rid of a lot of the branding **** that comes with the pjone.
As for sim-unlock this has nothing to do with s-off or routing, you can pay to get it unlocked from ebay, Idid it yesterday and it cost me £3.99, so very reasonable.
would this be ok? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UNLOCK-CO...ultDomain_3&hash=item3cc0e2889b#ht_3192wt_952
and what is a goldcard? I am new to rooting
Looks ok, I used this one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Unlock-Co...ssories_RL&hash=item2c611a04e1#ht_2693wt_1344
what is a goldcard? Thanks
goldcard allows you to flash RUU files with a different CID to your device.
what would you say is the best rom? Thanks

Firstly I declare myself a noob for asking this but I want to be sure of what im doing before I do it.
Basically I want to run a patcher for a perticullar program on my phone however it needs root access to run.
Now my noob question is, what exactly do I need to do (is it just S-Off?) and can somebody send me a link with instructions on how to do this for my device.
I have a stock Sensation Z710e running ICS via OTA download on O2 (UK)
Android Version: 4.0.3
HTC Sense Version: 3.6
Software Version: 3.32.206.12
Any other info needed for definative answer just ask and i shall provide.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Just a few quick questions:
1. When i boot up holding the volume down key it says S-Off however it still says locked at the top. I have managed to run the patch that needed root access so i'm guessing the phone is rooted fine.
2. Would it saying locked at the top pose a problem if i wanted to run a custom rom in the future and
