[Q] Rooting and Recovery questions - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I've rooted my N8000 using CWM recovery - method 2 from this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=36236025&postcount=3
I want to remove CWM and restore the device to original and then root it using Method 1 from the same post above. Is that possible?
Also, what's a binary count and why is it bad?
The reason I want to go back to default is because the OTA update fails to install after restarting. I want to get the update. What should I do to make the update work?
Thanks for your help!
Edit: Sorry about posting in the wrong section. Don't know how to delete from here so I can post in the right place.

1. Installing stock rom removes your CWM.
2. Binary count is the count of # of roms installed on your note, can be rested by " Triangle away " from playstore.

Just install the new firmware direectly jb 4.12 for your country from sammobile.com or samsungupdates.com and forget about ota !!!

Update will remove root and will fail if you have CWM installed, it requires stock recovery to apply (this is of course if you go the official update route).
Return to stock recovery
So how do I return to stock recovery from cwm? I'm not so concerned about this update, but I'd like to use stock ics when it comes out. ( keeping root, of course)

Flash stock recovery with ODIN, make sure there is not a kernel in the .tar or the flash counter will trip.
Another question and sorry if I sound like a newb! Will I easily be able to reroot my phone?

If you get familiar with ODIN (and heed the same warning I posted above) all you end up having to do is flash CWM recovery and then install superuser via an update zip file. You may have to flash it "2 - 3 times to get it to complete without error" I am not sure why it does that but I followed the instructions around here somewhere.
Many thanks to you guys! I had the same question.

Help!! Lost Root Access when Upgraded to ICS from Samsung Support website using Kies

Could you please help me understand how to get back the root access on my skyrocket? I rooted my phone
DooMLoRD_v3_ROOT-zergRush-busybox-su.zip when running on Gingerbread.
Now I upgraded to ICS from Samsung Support Website using Samsung Kies Software.
I can see Super User in my phone, but the the info tab shows su binary not found.. and the apps that need root access is not working like Titanium Backup and Busy Box Installer.

I do not have CWM in my phone, I had just rooted my phone which was on Gingerbread, installed Titanium Backup Pro and used that to freeze the tetheringManager process, so that I can use my phone as a Wireless hotspot.
but after I upgraded to ICS yesterday night using kies, I think I lost the root access, none of the apps that require root access seems to work
Follow this thread to install cwm and then flash updated superuser zip and su binary
Edit: flash touch recovery. Search and u will find it

That's what it be. And id suggest twrp. I have a twrp tar you can flash with Odin to get you started if you like.
Its not the newest twrp release but it'll work. You can flash newest one after you root:thumbup:

1st thing flash cwm touch
Here's the link to 5.8.1.3 which I have. Supposedly it isn't recognized within rom manager but doing backups in rom manager is problematic so u are better off actually going into the cwm recovery.

Here's the link to an updated version with that inconvenience corrected...either will be fine

you need odin to flash cwm, dont use rom manager as it is sometimes problematic.
go to my sticky in my sig, goto the download section, under recoveries there is a tutorial on using odin and all the links for the downloads that you will need like odin and touch cwm, when cwm is installed just flash the su binary that you have, if you dont have su, there is also a link in the sticky to download it from
edit:just reread your post, did you say that you previously(b4 update) did not have cwm installed and had root, if so which method did u use to get root

So ODIN is a software that I have to instal on my PC and then I have to use ODIN to install CWM to my phone, and after doing that I should use CWM to install SU to my phone? Is that a Correct understanding?

[Q]Installing back to stock android

Hello everybody, new member here. I have recently rooted and installed CyanogenMod 10 on my Samsung galaxy s blaze 4g to test it out and I just feel weird with it. Is there anyway to return back to stock android Gingerbread? I've tried everything but it keeps returning me to CyanogenMod. Please and thank you.

For samsung official (no root) go to this thread and download the file: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1917570
download Odin (look for k0nane's post in the dev thread). flash the tar.md5 file from the first thread. click on phone and navigate to where you downloaded it. UNCHECK REPARTITION. if you dont, you'll brick your phone... boot into download mode, and then flash it. you'll be stock.
for the future, you can get a long way by using the search feature...

You probably dirty flashed, install cwm for the stock firmware you flashed via odin. Once installed go into cwm and wipe everything; data/factory reset, wipe cache, dalvik cache, and fix permissions. Try that and it should be able to workagain. Also you might have the wrong baseband installed.

Xspoed framework not working ?

This is my first ever post in xda so I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to post this. So I have a HTC one m8 Verizon running the latest os. It is rooted using weaksauce 2. The boot loader is not unlocked and it has s on unfortunately. So here is the problem I go to install framework work then I reboot and I get an error
app_process version "58" has been installed preciously but version "47" was found now. if you didn't expect an old file to be restored.
A lot have people have said to flash it via recovery. Which I would do but here is we're I get confused. I don't have a custom recovery. Don't I need one to flash xsposed ? Or can I flash it via stock recovery ? Thanks for the help.

The only way to get a custom recovery is to unlock the bootloader, which you didn't do. Once you figure that out and get a custom recovery installed, then you can flash whatever you wish (including Xposed). I'm new to this phone, but I'm pretty sure that the way you rooted it with WS 2 is not permanent, and probably reverted itself after a reboot.
The only current way to permanently root this phone with the latest OS is to use Sunshine, which will cost you $25. But I hear that it does work.
p.s. Oh, and next time, please post questions in the Q & A forum.
Okay thanks. Sorry for posting in the wrong place.

[Question]Updating rooted phone without messing up the phone?

Hi,
TL-DR; I rooted my phone, and want to update with minimal loss of data.
Sorry for this newbie question but I really couldn't figure out everything and wanted to confirm before proceeding.
I have MHA-L29C185B138 and rooted step-by-step via the instructions on this link:
HOW TO ROOT YOUR MATE 9 with Decrypted Data in TWRP without needing a patched Boot.img
I want to update. What should I do? I isntalled Firmware Finder and downloaded MHA-L29C185B172 FULLOTA-MF. (downloaded all 3 files)
I couldn't find a complete tutorial for rooted roms. Read different and partial recommendations on different threads. Somewhere I read that I need to restore my boot and recovery partition before update. I backed my boot partition as it was a step in rooting guide but I didn't back up my recovery partition.
So could you please point me a beginner friendly guide that explains step by step updating rooted mate 9?
Thanks in advance.
I bump up this question as I'm interested in that answer also
Sent from my MHA-L29 using Tapatalk
Updating and keeping root is basically not possible, as far as I know.
Regardless of installation method, your phone will be re-locked and wiped when new firmware is installed on a rooted phone.
Same question from me as well. I rooted using the method in the link and I wanted to update to C185B172. No idea what's the safe proof way. As this is my daily driver and only phone I can't risk messing with it.

Whenever you update you have to start all over again with the same process you originally rooted with. Like @duraaraa said your bootloader gets locked back down and your recovery gets flashed to stock. So you have to unlock bootloader, then install TWRP, format your data so that you're unencrypted and flash the public then HW data files for the specific firmware you updated to. Basically follow the steps in the root method you initially used. This has to be done everytime

Yes sir. But remember if you're rooted with TWRP you will have to flash stock recovery first before you can even think about updating or taking an OTA otherwise it will fail.

Thanks for clarifying but the original question of OP hasn't been answered yet. Where to get the recovery.img from?
I downloaded the full package from firmware finder and extracted everything with 7zip, I found 2 different recovery files with same file size but different content in it.
recovery_a.img and recovery2_a.img
Which one should I use ?

Sorry about that, you want to use the RECOVERY.img not recovery2. You fastboot that img and you will have stick recovery, and it will place it in the correct spot so need to worry about where you would need to flash it to. Hope that helps
