Need ideas for rigging the power button. - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Alright, my skyrocket got the sticky power button issue. I went to take the screws out, and what do you know. They were all stripped already! This phone is refurbished that I got over the summer when my last Skyrocket just died out of nowhere and never turned back on. Since its obviously past the warranty date for refurb, and I don't feel like dishing out 200 bucks for insurance just to upgrade in a few months for the S4, I took the power button out without taking the phone apart. I knew I wouldn't get it back in since the hooks would break, and I can easily access the white button..
but.
I was wondering if there was any way I could rig something over the power button just to make it slightly more convenient to press instead of putting my nail inside the spot where the button used to be.
Any ideas? Thoughts? Or shall I just suck it up.

Unless I'm misunderstanding the problem, why not just replace the outer power button housing?
http://www.cellphonerepairshop.com/samsung-skyrocket-sgh-i727/
You can order it from here. I'm looking into this issue myself since I'm having problems with my power button sticking. Could crazy glue the outer button sleeve to the hooks if you meant those were broken.

I can't really open the casing to put another power button in. The screws are too stripped.
Another question, does CM10.1 have volume wake toggle? I couldn't find it after I tore out my power button so I switched over to Embryo which while is a good rom... Is still touch wiz and doesn't suit me.

Smh..... You took out the power button & stripped the screws stop while you're behind bud take it apart somehow buy new screws use a dental pick and pure rubbing alcohol clean everything around that button because at your rate this thing won't last much longer use the dental pick to clean around the white button itself.

You can get off this thread now. As my post said, I didn't strip them. But thanks for the advice!

FWIW I tried the needle + rubbing alcohol tip to clean around the white power button as suggested but still seem to have the issue - phone is nearly unusable. The volume rocker wake function seems to be moved or missing in the nightly build of CM 10.1 I'm using.

I would personally modify a rubber case, glue a small piece of rubber to the power button on the case then just put the case on and it has two functions #1 you don't have an ugly power button #2 its functional.

Volume buttons loose?

The volume buttons on my NS seem a little loose and rattle a bit, more than compared to my Vibrant. Anyone else have this? Just the way it's designed or a defect?
Otherwise, very impresses with the NS so far!
Pretty solid on mine, no give and does not rattle even if I shake it.
Pretty solid.. and I'm not going to shake it or do something to possible make it worse!
Mine rattles like crazy and it's super annoying. I guess if others don't do this then I should exchange mine.

Hmm, not good then, lol. I hope my BB has more in stock to do an exchange... Compared to my power button, the volume button(s) are very loose, make a rattling sound every time I even slightly touch it.
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk
mine is but im ok with it. My unlocked one does the same the power button is not loose while the volume button is.
Nothing wrong with mine, no noise or rattle.

exchange it, my vibrant had the same issue and i got one with sturdy buttons
What a pain. I just had everything customized and setup the way I like it and now I have to wipe it and get a replacement because of a crappy plastic volume button.
But at least there is a retail location to handle an exchange unlike the N1.

Fold a small piece of paper, take the back cover off, slip it in the gap of the volume rocker that goes into the hard back of the phone and that takes care of the problem

hahaha it worked for the vibrant and it works for this too =D
Many galaxies have this. Not a big deal for me.
Thx, that's a good idea re: the paper.
I was actually able to exchange mine today no problem, but had to drive 40 minutes to another BB that had a few in stock. This new one has a slightly loose volume button, but not as bad as the first one.
Mine is a little loose then my vibrant but I can live with it
just shook the hell out of mine. no rattle. have a vibrant, also doesnt rattle.
Eh... mine Just started to rattle. Not if I shake it, but if anything touches it. If I lightly touch it it will rattle. As if there isn't enough spring tension or more like the button is to small for the slot in the case. This is going to bug the hell out if me. I love this phone and its all finally customized how I want! Should I wipe and exchange it, or will they think I am crazy?
Same problem here.
The volume buttons are quite loose and I hear some rattle when I shake it.
But that's Samsung.
I know in some cases the Nexus One had problems with the power button, but at least there were no loose parts.
So I went to best buy to see if the loose button was just how its made or a defect. The employee took a few nexus's out of the boxes and they all had the same "loose feeling". Maybe loose is the wrong word; it just isn't solid like the power button. So I guess were just stuck with it. This is still a hell of a phone, just had some pretty high build quality expectations following my N1.

[GUIDE] How to deal with/fix a broken power button

The myTouch 4g is a good, reliable phone. When, rooted, it is even better. We happily flash ROMS away, without a care in the world. One day, however, your power button just stops working . Dread, fear, and despair right? Well there is hope! If your power button doesn't work, there are a couple of things you can do before you head for the wallet to spend big bucks on a new phone.
1. Send to HTC.
The most recommended thing to do is to check if your phone has warranty and send it in to HTC if it does. You can either call (preferable) or send in a e-mail. Remember, even if you are rooted and you send in you phone with a custom ROM, HTC will not charge you unless you remove the "VOID" sticker in the back. This is the painless, easiest method, with little effort required, *although you will have to survive without your phone for atleast a week (which was hell)
No warranty?
If your phone is out of warranty, or if you removed the VOID sticker for whatever reason and Dont feel like paying HTC $125 to fix it, there a couple of things you can do.
2. Jury-Rigging (self-fix method)
This method is for those that are comfortable opening up their phone and want to fix the power button for themselves.
*Tools: aluminum foil, Torx T5 screwdriver, small phillips screwdriver, safe-open pry tool.
This idea was inspired from XDA user jjbadd385 who mentioned in a thread I can't quite remember that he had turned on his phone by using aluminum foil to touch the actual power button underneath the outer casing. I recommend using this thread and video http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1591388 to safely open up the phone. Ofcourse, you wont need to dismantle the whole phone, all you need to do is remove the outer casing (black rubber thing the surrounds the edges of the phone). Just do the First step from the guide provided. BE CAREFUL not too lose a little spring that is located near the power button, without it your power button will feel like "its stuck", but the spring itself is NOT necessary to turn the phone on. You will then see your actual power button at the top of your phone. Now here comes the fun part. Using your eyes, and common sense, cut out a small piece of aluminum foil that is about roughly the same size as the power button. Using your hands or the pry tool, bend the aluminum so that it comfortably fits in that little square area directly on top of the power button. Now carefully put the rubber casing back, be wary of the aluminum falling out of place. It may take some patience, but it shouldn't be too difficult. If put correctly, your phone should now start up! Now your power button should work whenever you click it
***If for some reason it doesn't, there could be a problem with the actual ribbon itself (which would be unfixable unless u bought a new ribbon), but most likely the aluminum foil probably was not placed right or was moved putting the casing back on.
****If enough people request, I'll probably make of video/picture slides of the Jury-Rigging method, but right now I have to study for my Sociology test and I'm too lazy
*******************************************************************
Want to turn on your phone, but you don't have the tools for the Jury-rigging method and you need your phone NOW?
If you are UNROOTED: (this method is untested by me) From doing a quick google search, there have been people who have turned on their myTouch 4g by simply connecting the phone to the charger and immediately holding the HOME button for about 5-10 seconds. Some have had success with this, but personally, It has not worked for me.
If you are ROOTED and your phone has these things:
Clockworkmod Recovery 5
ADB debugging enabled
You must have adb debugging already enabled on your phone or else this will not work! Even though the phone is powered off, commands somehow still go to the phone!
Make sure to set up ADB on your computer (there are multiple guides in XDA)
-Then simply connect your phone to your computer, open your terminal. Check to see if your computer reads your device by running this command:
Code:
adb devices
If your computer reads it, then you'll be all set!
Then, run the command:
Code:
adb reboot
Give me lifeee! Your phone should then reboot!

I want to add that underneath the outer case, and sitting on top of the flex ribbon, is a very very small piece, that adds that "spring" to the outer button itself, & it falls out of place. Mine did, and to my suprise, when I opened my phone, I apparently lost it because it was nowhere in sight. Also, I have a 4ext recovery image, that was compiled specifically for me by madmaxx82, that when I flashed it, I can power my phone completely down, then plug in the charger, & it will automatically boot up into recovery. I then select "reboot" and it reboots my phone normally. It's a neat little utility, that keeps me from cracking my phone open.

yeah, I too lost the spring as well! good catch!!
I too use to do pretty much the same thing (plug-in the phone to turn it on) But now with the aluminum foil in-place inside the phone, I can use the power button whenever!
Thanks again for the insight about using aluminum foil!
Alternate material option
I had a similar issue with my power button and came to this solution also but instead of aluminum foil I used a piece of disposable aluminum cookie sheet because it was thicker and has some spring in it. I started with aluminum and it didn't work so well - I think the aluminum foil deforms too much to work reliably over multiple operations.
But if you can get your phone replaced by the carrier or manufacturer do it because these things aren't made to be repaired.

Good call, the cookie sheet was certainly tougher, but not much of a big difference i guess.

My phone would not turn on after I dropped it on a hard floor for at least the hundredth time (Silly name aside, I LOVE this phone for its durability and the fact that I bought it almost 2 years ago and its features are still on par with most phones out there!!). I had almost bought a new phone earlier in the day before trying one last time to find a solution online. I am so glad I found this post!
I used the foil method, although I didn't have a torx 5 handy, I was able to safely pry the frame apart enough to access the power button and put some foil on it. I am pretty sure I lost the spring before I even attempted the fix. There was also a small amber plastic square with a small metal bump in the center covering the switch poles - seemed like it might have once had to do with powering on the phone, but I took it out and now the phone powers on fine with the foil.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING!!!

Since I had to do this for myself last month, I thought I'd throw in a couple of little things I gathered from the process.
- My symptoms were that my power button would not 'register'. It had less feedback and gradually grew harder and harder to activate until eventually I couldn't get it to work at all. Other than a couple of small drops, I hadn't put it under any serious stress. I did the cable-boot thing for a while (in combination with a sleep button app), but eventually got tired of it and decided to pop the case open.
- You absolutely need a T5 screwdriver, and they can be a little tricky to find (many driver sets don't go down past T7). Home Depot has a generic driver set that does include a T5 bit. The safe-pry tool is optional (you can use a small, flat screwdriver head if you are _careful_).
- My phone was never serviced, so the third T5 mentioned in the guide is under the VOID sticker at the bottom of the back. Once you take those three screws out, you can use your fingertips to make a gap between the front bevel and the rubber, then pry _gently_ to loosen the clips.
- Once you have released all the clips, the construction of the power button assembly looks like this:
Button -> piece of film -> metal disc (this is the 'spring' mentioned in the guide) -> ring-shaped contact on body
In my case, the film and disc had somehow slipped off-center, making it so that I couldn't make it hit the contacts. In this case, all I had to do was line everything back up again (film over button, disc over contact with concave-ish end facing the contact so it 'springs') and carefully clip it all back together. Now my power button works like it did on day one. Obviously this fix won't work if you actually have a flex cable break, but I have a feeling that most people who don't throw their phones around may have this sort of slippage occurring over time, and the fix might be simpler than you think*!

Thanks for the input!
I bought a used sensation 4g week or so back. Opened the cover, something fell off, I didn't pay much attention and lost it. By the time I realised it was the spring, it was too late using a light sensor software at the moment to lock/unlock the device.
Is the foil method for the above issue? How can the foil create the spring effect. Hmm I guess I'll have to try out for myself though the sensor is working fine too but this post gives some hope.

Yes, mine does too... It's now annoying me so much that I'm just about to head off to the store that I bought it from; to exchange it for another...
Mine too, also applies to the volume rocker button, although not quite as much. Why can't these things be under more tension?

STOP SCARING ME ! I'm from Romania and if my phone comes with defects it's going to be a looong time till it heads back to Italy and get a replacement ( +money spent on shipping it from RO to IT and the other way around )
My power button and my volume rocker do not wobble in any way, they are perfectly tight. Who knows if that will change in the future though?
It was discovered on another forum that the white version has tight buttons with no play. The black ones seem to suffer from a loose power button and a bit less so with the volume button. Does this seem to apply to everyone here?

My black 16gb has a loose power button. It works fine, but if I push it side to side it has noticeable movement. If I shake the phone and put my ear right up to it there is a small rattling noise.
Out of curiosity I checked buttons on my xperia sp and my note 8.0 and noticed other buttons on these devices such as volume button and power button had some movement as well. It doesn't effect the way the nexus looks or the way it works, so it doesn't bother me as long as it's not a defect and as long as it functions for the life of the device.
I emailed google support and got this response:
"Hello Lee,
Thank you for contacting Google about your Nexus 5. We are very glad to hear that you love the device! I am happy to answer your question about the power button.
By design, the power button does have a little 'wiggle' room. If however, you are having any issues with the ability to get the power button to function normally, please let us immediately.

I have a white nexus 5 and both power and volume are loose. This doesn't effect it at all and I'm not sure whether it was from my case (spigen ultra hybrid) when I take it out to change the back/clean, but I'm worried that if it was just from the case, how strong are the buttons and how long will it last?

All of a sudden today my power button became loose and now rattles. Rattles loud enough where I can here a foot away. I went to the Verizon store and all the gun metal ones had a very little rattle. Anyone having an issue with a loose power button?

Just realized mine rattles today, had it less than a week, heard it while I was on the phone...not sure if swapping for a new one would help.

Go ahead and exchange. Have them check the stock in the back. Then cross your fingers that it won't happen again. Or return and wait to purchase one later. I've had luck so far on my replacements power button but my volume rocker one is kinda loose.. Not sure what I'm doing yet..pita I'm on my third replacement
Mine doesn't rattle at all. However it does seem to be sunk in a bit. I can rub my finger along the top and not feel the button at all.

Yah, unfortunately just like the original the power buttons have inconsistencies. I've seen then raised up nice to being flush.

I'd noticed that the darker m8s have the recessed button.. I have that and my fiancee has the silver.. Even the display models show it.
M8, nuff said.
I've noticed the same thing with the two colors. I just don't want mine to rattle bad.
Well, mine just started rattling today...
I have a rattling power button as well. If I move my finger across the button it moves from side to side. It doesn't bother me too much but I'm worried that it will eventually fall off. Should I ignore it or get it replaced?
The phone that I received initially had a loose volume toggle. I was able to get it swapped for a new one without any difficulties at a store.
Certainly if it is in the first 14 days, the replacement should be extremely easy. Not sure how much of a hassle it will be with later warranty support.
Just swapped out mine for the rattling power button as well as the right side of the screen coming loose causing a squeak. Spoke to a rep on the phone yesterday who said they don't have replacement devices for the m8 yet. Hopefully they will soon, but I would recommend anyone who is having issues to swap it out before your 14 days is up. Hopefully I'm wrong but I have a feeling all the current M8's will have the rattle issue eventually until the issue is resolved in the next batch.

Power button loose

Hi all,
So I just noticed that the power button seems to be slightly loose, hanging a little downwards. It is still working fine, but a little wobbly, not like the other two buttons (volume and camera).
Anyone else noticing this?
Thanks,
Abprie
What is age of your phone?
Mine is 6 month old, no issues.
I bought it when it came out. Was that like one year ago? Can't remember...
So, no one else with a similar issue?
I removed the back soft transparent TPU cover which I use from the phone so I could touch and test all three naked buttons for you, and they all behave the same, no one is loose. However, throughout over a one year period of use, all three buttons were protected by the back cover from dust and forcible manipulation. Did you use your phone naked without a cover or not?

Thanks for checking this. The power button feels significantly looser than the volume buttons, so I guess that something is different.
I always used the back cover, otherwise the phone was too slippery for me.
I use the phone for 2 weeks and all the buttons are the same without complaint. I use all the time with a rubber case (back). If your button suffered more in use (but it still worked) you can change the key mapping as I did, because the power button too often accidentally pressed when I took the phone in my hand. I replaced the POWER button with the top ASUSA.
