Hi guys,
I am sure this has been asked many times and it's very stupid question. I have reading since last three days and I am still unsure.
I got this HTC sensation from someone. It is rooted and has CWM. I am not sure if it's bootloader is unlocked or not. I assumed that if there is CWM then it must be bootloader unlocked but the attached picture confused me.
I just want to upgrade it to official ics. I tried to use this thread to upgrade but nothing happened. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459767
Can someone direct me to right path? Please. I will really appreciate.
I am not a noob. Just new to htc phones

The bootloader still locked according to the picture. So go to htcdev.com website and follow instructions to unlock it. You can upgrad to ics either through installing a custom ROM or an official RUU (Rom Update Utility). If you choose the RUU method you will loose the root and the custom recovery but will retain the unlocked bootloader and the soff status.
Read the following guides carefully to be able to upgrad your phone.

Hi,
@ Alsager:
Please stop telling people who are s-off to unlock their phones at HTC.
This is totally unnecessary and could possibly bork their phone in the future...
@ viny2cool:
You need to upgrade your firmware/radio in order to get everything working properly.
The Kohr-Ah thread that Alsager suggested is a good starting point.

Hi,
A locked bootloader will prevent the user from using certain fastboot commands.
If the user has a locked bootloader, this can be unlocked with Kohr-Ah's "HBoot 1.27.1100 Patch (Go from Hboot 1.29.0000 to 1.27.1100)"

I have read the 1st post of the above thread. As I understand it, I have to do it in the following steps:
1. S-Off using revoltionary
2. Install CWM Recovery 5.0.0.8
3. Permanent root using su-2.3.6.3-ef-signed.zip
4. Install Custom ROM
Is the above procedure right? Or have I messed any step?
I believe the Super CID step is for branded phones which are locked to a particular carrier. Since my phone is unbranded and not locked to any carrier, I dont have to do it, right?
Please advice if I am missing something.

To install new ROM's like the ICS 4.0.3 ones you need supercid because you have to flash a new firmware
The order in which you wrote is correct
Sent from my HTC Sensation XE with Beats Audio Z715e using xda premium
So I need Super CID for ICS ROM's only and not for Sense 3.5 ROM's, correct?

Technically incorrect as the ICS ROMs are sense 3.5 at the moment but I know what you mean. No need to SuperCID for Gingerbread based ROMs
Sent from my HTC Sensation XE with Beats Audio Z715e using xda premium
Yes. I meant gingerbread roms. So are the steps that I mentioned correct? And in the right order?
Btw, why does my phone has 'locked' written in the bootloader menu? Is it the locked bootloader from htc and do I have to first unlock it before attempting S-off?

You should be able to S-OFF without unlocking it and it only says locked because the revolutionary tool and HTCdev tool work in slightly different ways. The steps are correct and in the right order

Thanks, Jonny. You have been of great help.
Another thing. If I root my Sensation now and install a custom rom, will I still get the ICS update available notification whenever HTC releases it? And will I be able to apply that ICS update to my rooted phone?
I know there already are ICS rom's available but I would still want to check out what HTC offers in their official ICS update. Maybe a newer version of Sense?
Hi all
Is it me, cuz im not seeing the 'desire s' listed on the htcdev.com as an option to unlock the boot loader?
All I want to do is root my stock Rom. Not interested in trying any other roms.

It's not listed but it works. Just select the bottom option "Other Supported Devices" and follow the procedure
Does this procedure get around s-on also ?
Concerns me why they haven't listed it.

No, your device will be s-on, but the bootloader will be unlocked. It's almost the same.
I have no clue why they haven't listed it either.....
Can you still root with s-on ?

After you unlock bootloader via htcdev.com, yes you can
Thanks for your help. One last question, how do you root the installed rom?

Look for SuperOneClick in here, it will easily root your rom
Sent from somewhere around the globe using XDA app on my HTC Desire S
I unlocked the bootloader via htcdev.com (operation was OKAY).
SuperOneClick 2.2 hangs at step 7.
I'm guessing that you have a hboot 2.00...
When u used HTC.dev to unlock your HTC desire s you need to Install cwm or 4ext and then you can flash any Rom you like.
After flashing your HTC with the new Rom you need to fastboot the boot.img to your device cause your device is not S-off.
An other option would be downgrading. Do a few searches and you will be fine.
Otherwise post back and I'll help you out.

Hello,
Thank you for your help.
Yes I have the HBOOT 2.00.002 - Android 2.3.5
In the post : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1390496
"dtronics" suggests 2 operations to do for s-offing for the Desire S :
1 - unlocking the bootloader (htcdev.com)
2 - using SuperOneClick 2.2
The second treatment hangs at 7th step.
Without downgrading the hboot (2.00.002):
If you have a link to a simple and complete documentation to doing s-OFF.
Thank you
Dos bootloader unlock deletes all personal apps, contacts, files or not?

What's better to do if I want to flash roms, htcdev unlock or S-OFF? I mean, do I have to do both, or just one, and what's better?
And what should I use, EXT4 recovery or ClockworkMod Recovery? Tnx
I would choose downgrading if necessary and S-OFF. The main disadvantages of the htcdev method are the loose of warranty and the need to flash manually the boot image every time you change the rom.
I personally like 4ext but CWM is also very good.
Next time you need some info gry to search the forum, this things were allready discussed.
As a mather of fact i don't think there's a thing left undiscussed in here.

Is it any chance to flash some sense 4 ROM into my Sensation with official update of ICS ? I unlocked bootloader from htc website but still s-on hboot 1.27?
Is any way maybe to downgrade to gingerbread or other solution for this ?
No. There are countless threads saying Revolutionary S-OFF is needed on Gingerbread before upgrading. Please read, now you will have to wait until someone finds a way to unlock it on the new HBOOT.
Don't use HTCDev. You're just letting HTC know you've rooted your phone. I'm not sure why people even use it - maybe because they think it's "official" or something. Oh well.

No. Well actually you can, but 95% that your phone will not boot
You want a Sense 4 ROM? Then flash one from the Development section?
You want official ROM? Do not flash on a rooted/S-Offed phine- use the RUU.
By the way the development sub-forum has a lot of guides and answers

Thanks but I already did official update to ICS and now no way back until someone make it possible.
Why then on htc official site say unlock bootloader to flash custom rom if it is not possible because s-on ?
I remember unlocking my bootloader. It actually does not S Off. But I managed to root. Problem though is that my phone in running on ICS. Theres no way I can get my phone to S Off, and now cannot flash a custom ROM.

Hi, can someone give me a short rundown of things needed to be able to install a custom rom for my Sensation XE running OTA Stock ICS 4.0.3? I've read some of the guides and just confused and overwhelmed with all the different methods. There's guides for how to do this and how to do that, but I'm confused with which step comes first.
For example, here are some of my questions:
1. Do I root first or S-OFF first? What's the chronological order for root, s-off, supercid?
2. I read somewhere you need to S-OFF for permanent root? But I thought you need to root before you can S-OFF or am I wrong? Is permanent root necessary?
3. Is there a different method for those who have installed OTA Stock ICS 4.0.3? My understanding is this update locked something.
Well being that your already on ics (your hboot will be 1.27 so theres only 1 method to s-off your device. Link below), your going to have unlock your bootloader. So visit HTC-dev to unlock your bootloader then follow this guide to s-off your phone http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25202517

They're different things.
In priority:
S-OFF Then you can do anything. Upgrade/downgrade firmware/radio, install custom recovery, ............
All the custom ROMs you're likely to use will be rooted.
There are many guides to help you S-OFF HBOOT 1.27.0000 read a few first. The wire trick may be frustrating but does ultimately work.
Hey everyone,
I have a Htc Sensation XE, with ICS (original rom) and i want to s off and root it, but the hboot is a 1.29 so the revolutionary way does not work, i know that there is a new way, the Juopunutbear one, but its seems a little hard, and to be honest i'm afraid to brick my phone, so can i just downgrade the phone ? flash any GB stock rom and use the revolutionary way to s off and root it ? if yes, how i'll do it ?
Thank you, and sorry for my bad english.

i think if you downgrade your hboot version you will brick your device
instead of juopunutbear method you can do htcdev unlock method to unlock the bootloader and then root the device
and if a flash a RUU rom, a GB one, and then do the s off and root thing with the best method i know, the revolutionary one ^^

i don't know if you can do that when you are in completely stock situation
wait for someone else to confirm it
if yes then you can do that procedure
You can't flash gb ruu, if you aren't s-off, or if you don't have supercid. Try the juopuntuBeats, is very easy and no problem. If you try it 4-5 times before running the program you can do it very fast.
EDIT: you can't brick your phone, if you do all the things that is required!!! First of all unlock the bootloader, with the htc WEB SITE and then install a recovery with the sensation toolkit and then install ROOT. Finish if you want to s-off you have to do the juopuntubear if no, you can flash rom with s-on but only with 4ext recovery
ok ok, thank you very much my friends, you have been a great advise, thank you once again.
No problem, bu remember do it slowly and keep calm

Nothin will happen, just S-OFF. Don't worry it works fine, when i do it first time i got success on the 4th try, now i can catch timing on the first attempt...so like other things it just depends on practice..
