Hi, can someone give me a short rundown of things needed to be able to install a custom rom for my Sensation XE running OTA Stock ICS 4.0.3? I've read some of the guides and just confused and overwhelmed with all the different methods. There's guides for how to do this and how to do that, but I'm confused with which step comes first.
For example, here are some of my questions:
1. Do I root first or S-OFF first? What's the chronological order for root, s-off, supercid?
2. I read somewhere you need to S-OFF for permanent root? But I thought you need to root before you can S-OFF or am I wrong? Is permanent root necessary?
3. Is there a different method for those who have installed OTA Stock ICS 4.0.3? My understanding is this update locked something.
Well being that your already on ics (your hboot will be 1.27 so theres only 1 method to s-off your device. Link below), your going to have unlock your bootloader. So visit HTC-dev to unlock your bootloader then follow this guide to s-off your phone http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25202517

Thanks! I'll check those out and come back if I have more questions.
Feel free to thank me, and pm me with any questions

They're different things.
In priority:
S-OFF Then you can do anything. Upgrade/downgrade firmware/radio, install custom recovery, ............
All the custom ROMs you're likely to use will be rooted.
There are many guides to help you S-OFF HBOOT 1.27.0000 read a few first. The wire trick may be frustrating but does ultimately work.

I have read the 1st post of the above thread. As I understand it, I have to do it in the following steps:
1. S-Off using revoltionary
2. Install CWM Recovery 5.0.0.8
3. Permanent root using su-2.3.6.3-ef-signed.zip
4. Install Custom ROM
Is the above procedure right? Or have I messed any step?
I believe the Super CID step is for branded phones which are locked to a particular carrier. Since my phone is unbranded and not locked to any carrier, I dont have to do it, right?
Please advice if I am missing something.

To install new ROM's like the ICS 4.0.3 ones you need supercid because you have to flash a new firmware
The order in which you wrote is correct

So I need Super CID for ICS ROM's only and not for Sense 3.5 ROM's, correct?

Technically incorrect as the ICS ROMs are sense 3.5 at the moment but I know what you mean. No need to SuperCID for Gingerbread based ROMs

Yes. I meant gingerbread roms. So are the steps that I mentioned correct? And in the right order?
Btw, why does my phone has 'locked' written in the bootloader menu? Is it the locked bootloader from htc and do I have to first unlock it before attempting S-off?

You should be able to S-OFF without unlocking it and it only says locked because the revolutionary tool and HTCdev tool work in slightly different ways. The steps are correct and in the right order

Thanks, Jonny. You have been of great help.
Another thing. If I root my Sensation now and install a custom rom, will I still get the ICS update available notification whenever HTC releases it? And will I be able to apply that ICS update to my rooted phone?
I know there already are ICS rom's available but I would still want to check out what HTC offers in their official ICS update. Maybe a newer version of Sense?
Hi ...Iam new at rooting my sensation and I a little confused with upgrading firmware for ics
I have an htc sensation 4g (tmobile) S-off , hboot 1.23.0000 , radio 10.14.9035.01, cid t-mobo10 , mid pg5810000 ,4ext recovery touch and Iam trying to install extreme sensation ics ..
I appreciate your help THX
If you're new to the phone and flashing it why not read the op in the ROM thread? All of the instructions are there. First of all you need to flash firmware to 1.27 h boot so you can get super cid. AFAIK you don't have advanced fastboot commands on 1.23. Read the op so you don't screw up your phone.
I am not being an ass but it's getting really old with so many asking for help when the Rom threads have very detailed instructions. If you can't read the instructions or don't understand them then for your own protection you shouldn't be flashing your phone.

and watch out while messing with firmwares... you might end up with a very expensive brick
Doesn't 1.23 come with the 3.12 update though? 3.12 is compatible with ICS, I booted Darkforest 4.0.3 from it before upgrading to 3.24. Could be wrong though, and either way, 3.24 is smoother and more stable.
Sidenote, however, I do agree that threads like these are unnecessary. This site is XDA Developers, the members here should know a thing or two - atleast the basic stuff. If I remember correctly, registering requires you to watch a video that says exactly not to make threads like this. Follow the guides, if you're truly stuck or are afraid to advance without clarification, then post in the Q and A section. This is for general discussion and should be kept as such.

I suggested the firmware update containing h boot 1.27 upgrade because it has unlocked h boot with advanced fastboot commands. He should be super cid, it's a lot easier to flash, most of the ICS ROMs require it. 1.27 firmware also has a newer radio and ril. Reading the stickies in dev forum will teach you a lot. You need to really have an understanding of the exact processes you're doing. I see so many inexperienced users getting into a lot situations they don't know how to fix and end up with more problems. I was a noob once and read a lot and still made mistakes but by reading I learned from mistakes others before me and how they resolved them helped me not panic and I too was able to resolve my problems. I just think you really need to read as much as possible. Especially the stickies atop all of the sections.
Installing ICS is tricky, updating a firmware if done wrong or flashing the wrong combination can cause problems. Read as much as you can.

I am having some problem. Some xda guys told in some different posts to use taco root and while bootlooping, use the revolutionary app. Now what I don't want to experiment or do is brick my first android smartphone. So, help me out guys, s-on, non root, Sen XE. I will be obliged if someone sees into this and tries the taco root and revolution. Only the Revolutionary does not work for me because I updated to HTC's latest software optimisation update.

Step 1: WHAT does the Bootloader say ?
Are you S-OFF'd ? If so have you got a custom Recovery, e.g. CWM ? If so you can just install root through the custom recovery.
Or is Revolutionary failing to S-OFF in the first place ?
Don't know what Taco Root is but then again I'm a bear of very little brain.
EDIT: looked up Taco Root, interesting. I won't try it as I'm S-OFF'd already, there must be a thread somewhere that discusses it.

In some threads there was a mention of Taco root but none of them say how safe it is. As I am only concerned about bricking my phone. I have tried Revolutionary but fails. As I have mentioned earlier, I am s-on at the moment. And I have also tried to install CWM recovery without s-off but with no luck. Can u Devs please find out how safe taco root is, because some people have got s-off by taco temp root and then s-off using Revolutionary while bootlooping.

No do not use HTC dev, you will not have s off. Follow the guides on how to root, super cid, etc, stickied at the very top of Sensation Developement forum. Why are looking at how to root a phone other than the one you have? This is what causes people to brick their phones.
i'm sorry to sound like a noob, but i searched and searched and got no informative answer.
i have a sensation xe. firmware is 3.32.401.105, on ICS, 4.0.3, stock.
is it possible for me to root this device?

if you have hboot version 1.27.0000 then u will have to wait. JuopunutBear has made a S-OFF version you can go and check it in the Developement section!
If you have the S-offable version, please refer to my signature below for a Noob's guide to rooting and flashing ROM cheers~
It's 1.27, does that mean it is unrootable ATM?

Only way is to downgrade using an RUU to gingerbread, root it, flash custom recovery, use voodoo ota rootkeeper, flash stock recovery, update to ICS again. Restore root using voodoo, flash custom recovery and flash the rooting tools in Mike's stock Rom thread.
No direct way to root it yet though.

Hey everyone,
I have a Htc Sensation XE, with ICS (original rom) and i want to s off and root it, but the hboot is a 1.29 so the revolutionary way does not work, i know that there is a new way, the Juopunutbear one, but its seems a little hard, and to be honest i'm afraid to brick my phone, so can i just downgrade the phone ? flash any GB stock rom and use the revolutionary way to s off and root it ? if yes, how i'll do it ?
Thank you, and sorry for my bad english.

i think if you downgrade your hboot version you will brick your device
instead of juopunutbear method you can do htcdev unlock method to unlock the bootloader and then root the device
and if a flash a RUU rom, a GB one, and then do the s off and root thing with the best method i know, the revolutionary one ^^

i don't know if you can do that when you are in completely stock situation
wait for someone else to confirm it
if yes then you can do that procedure
You can't flash gb ruu, if you aren't s-off, or if you don't have supercid. Try the juopuntuBeats, is very easy and no problem. If you try it 4-5 times before running the program you can do it very fast.
EDIT: you can't brick your phone, if you do all the things that is required!!! First of all unlock the bootloader, with the htc WEB SITE and then install a recovery with the sensation toolkit and then install ROOT. Finish if you want to s-off you have to do the juopuntubear if no, you can flash rom with s-on but only with 4ext recovery
ok ok, thank you very much my friends, you have been a great advise, thank you once again.
No problem, bu remember do it slowly and keep calm

Nothin will happen, just S-OFF. Don't worry it works fine, when i do it first time i got success on the 4th try, now i can catch timing on the first attempt...so like other things it just depends on practice..
Hi guys,
I am sure this has been asked many times and it's very stupid question. I have reading since last three days and I am still unsure.
I got this HTC sensation from someone. It is rooted and has CWM. I am not sure if it's bootloader is unlocked or not. I assumed that if there is CWM then it must be bootloader unlocked but the attached picture confused me.
I just want to upgrade it to official ics. I tried to use this thread to upgrade but nothing happened. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459767
Can someone direct me to right path? Please. I will really appreciate.

The bootloader still locked according to the picture. So go to htcdev.com website and follow instructions to unlock it. You can upgrad to ics either through installing a custom ROM or an official RUU (Rom Update Utility). If you choose the RUU method you will loose the root and the custom recovery but will retain the unlocked bootloader and the soff status.
Read the following guides carefully to be able to upgrad your phone.

Hi,
@ Alsager:
Please stop telling people who are s-off to unlock their phones at HTC.
This is totally unnecessary and could possibly bork their phone in the future...
@ viny2cool:
You need to upgrade your firmware/radio in order to get everything working properly.
The Kohr-Ah thread that Alsager suggested is a good starting point.

Hi,
A locked bootloader will prevent the user from using certain fastboot commands.
If the user has a locked bootloader, this can be unlocked with Kohr-Ah's "HBoot 1.27.1100 Patch (Go from Hboot 1.29.0000 to 1.27.1100)"
