[Q] Modified Device? - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I went to check for updates and I got this, "your device has been modifed, Software updates are not available".
So I checked under Status and it says "custom''.
I have never modified this device as I have zero reason to. I tried reformatting without the SD card and it works for about a week then I get the message again. I have done this about 4 times already.
Anything? Did I pay full price on a refurb from Best Buy, that I special ordered because no one had a 32 gig?

What does Kies say ???
jje

nothing, just says "Connecting" for an indefinite amount of time. It connects to Kies Air but you can't do anything other than file transfer with that.

have you booted it into odin mode..
holding down vol down and power button and see what the FLASH COUNT SAYS.. If you bought it brand new and there is a Count on it i WOULD be screaming at best buy.. They do repackage items... .
Was the samsung seal on the box when you got it ..
Check the above... and let us flash count

the seal was on the box.

I updated through KIES with a custom status, sometimes KIES doesn't connect though, takes a couple plug and unplug cycles

not necessarily, your attachment picture is of recovery mode( power and volume up) hold power and volume down for download, or ODIN mode, see what that says

sweet that's a good sign, did you push up? that will give you the flash counter and binary information. just hold power after you get that info and it should reboot. I would try plugging into KIES a couple times again, mine doesn't always get recognized. might have to uninstall and reinstall KIES also

just make sure you get all of the drivers off before you reinstall KIES, good luck! for what it's worth, mine said the same thing as yours and KIES updated it fine

Did you change the default language? Inventory sold by most US retailers is generally set to English. If you didn't change the language settings, you may have a refurbished unit.

I changed the language back to English and rebooted, nothing. Reintalling Kies now

OK. Now what. I have zero idea as to what to do. Restore? Take it back to BB? It seems to be working fine otherwise, just this bugs me.
Of course, my GN2 is not supported by Kies version 2.0. Why would the Samsung flagship phone actually work on the program that Samsung is pushing us to use. Guess Itunes is still my best bet for an ANDROID operated phone, I feel the blame will probably fall on Verizon. Sorry, rant... (sadly itunes works better with my GN2 and GN10 than it ever did with my iphone, ipod, and ipad)

System status CUSTOM .
Its not original firmware looks a probable returned phone .

[Q] Did I fully brick my phone?

I was updating to froyo using the Odin installer and for some reason it stalled. I waited 10 minutes and nothing happened, it was stuck on DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET!! aaand being the genius that I am reset the Odin installer and phone...now I get nothing. The phone is completely unresponsive, no ! screen or anything.
Am I screwed?
edit: sorry for posting this in the wrong forum, please move to Q&A if a mod gets a chance.
close EVERYTHING, take everything out of your phone (sim, battery, and sd card.) then put the battery in but DONT TURN IT ON. have your usb cable ready. hold the two volume buttons down, and then plug in your usb cable to the phone (it should be plugged into your comp) WITHOUT PRESSING ANY POWER BUTTONS. if you get back into downloader mode, you are fine and can then restore using odin or the i click restore
hmmm, well try this take out the battery sim card and ex sd if u got one, open odin, put the battery back in and plug the usb in while holdin the volume buttons, aka download mode... sometimes it doesnt work the first time just try it a couple more...
I did this with my phone. If nothing comes on screen when you plug in the USB cable and entering recovery and download mode don't work, then take thye phone back to AT&T, they accepted my bricked phone back. Just act dumb like you have no clue why it's broken.
I have a similar issue, however I can still get into the downloader..but it just hangs when restoring on factoryfs.rfs....
Any suggestions on that?

Are you doing the method where you remove the battery first, hold the volume buttons (without power) and plug into USB? That *SHOULD* get you into download mode- if not, maybe check a different USB port.

Can you clarify? Did you successfully upgrade to froyo or incur and error somewhere in the process. When you say that "nothing happens" what exactly does that mean?
What does ODIN show when you try to upload?

Upgrade to Froyo successfully. Want to go back to 2.1 after using One Click Odin JF6 rom, it never ends. Following on from here, probe with OCD Froyo, eclair, odin and any rom could do to finish flashing. He stays in zImage and shows the status bar.
Any idea I can try?

Guys, good news! I recovered the phone and install Froyo. My error was that it came to how to download and then disconnect the USB and reconnected.
Joe K Captivate works perfect in Argentina because it uses the same bands as AT & T, send me a friend who lives in NYC, obviously unlocked.
Thank you all for your concern, I return to live!

[FIXED] plz Help! Bricked trying to use ODIN on stock 2.2

my phone was running the official 2.2 update and i wanted to get back to 2.1 to flash a custom rom. it did a master clear just fine in ODIN but locked up at "DO NOT TURN OFF.." so i had to unplug it and restart, now its stuck at the pc to phone image and ODIN still wont flash it..plz help!
You're supposed to click 'Start' and THEN do Master Clear.
Remove battery so phone is off
Reinsert battery but leave off
Open Odin 1 click program
Hold volume up/down at same time, FOLLOWED by plugging phone in
You should be in Download mode
Click start & hope for the best
Hope that helps

My question is if my bootloader is broken will using the jig even matter. [Q] Dead phone - how to revive

I have a stock AT&T S2 (I727) that worked fine. We're now in Costa Rica and I need it unlocked. I'm short on time and the local phone shop said they could unlock it.
They couldn't and gave it back, saying the battery was low.
Battery is recharged, but the phone will not turn on or show any signs of life. When plugged into the charger, nothing on the screen. No response to the reset button sequence.
I downloaded Odin and the S2 drivers and the phone appears, but it's in yellow. When I press the power button, Odin responds with a sound. That's it.
I have no idea what they did, but I know it sure not saving me any time!! Esp since ATT may have just given me the code....
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks!
Kurt

Do you know how to use Odin? What is yellow? If it says COM port yellow that is a good thing, Odin sees your phone. You need it in download mode ( holding both volume up and down while phone is off and Odin on your screen plug it in to the computer, if they loaded a different ROM on it then only holding volume down might put it in download mode) then browse to your stock att ROM with Odin under PDA section and hit flash. Don't change any settings on Odin ... Only add a check mark to update boot loaders. Keep trying until you get a successful flash. After the phone AUTOMATICALLY reboots you can try the 3 button combo, get into recovery and reset to factory and reboot. Hope it helps ...

They bricked ur phone when they tried to unlock it, I almost guarantee it. You could've just purchased an unlock code off the net, but I digress. Keep trying to get the phone to go green in Odin. My guess may be the USB drivers you have installed are incorrect as well.
Yeah, the shop bricked your phone.

Argh. I looked for a 727 forum, but I didn't look for a Skyrocket forum. Sorry.
And sorry for the delay - we lost internet for a while when we got a new house (here in CR).
The shop is willing to try and fix the phone, but not sure I trust them but not sure of my abilities yet.
They said they just updated it. But that's not what they were trying to do - they were supposed to be unlocking it.
Thanks for the detailed directions.
No, I don't know Odin. Reading up a lot....
Yes, it's the COM port that is yellow.
I think I have the correct USB drivers - the computer recognizes my S3 as a I535.
So, I have KIES_HOME_I727UCMC1_I727ATTMC1_844945_REV02_user_low_ship.tar.md5 (stock ROM I believe) downloaded. Odin shows this as the entry next to PDA.
Hard to tell the phone is in the download mode, since there's no display.
I've been delaying, but I guess it's time to try....

The ucmc1 tar file in your post is for the i727. If that's the phone you have then go ahead and flash it. If you have an i535 it'll probably brick your phone, don't flash it.
So I tried flashing it. Odin says 'SetupConnection', but then nothing else happened. It didn't pass or fail.
I'm not sure what to do next - I'm afraid to interrupt the process, but nothing is happening...

if the phone has no signs of life it is hardbricked as such odin/computer wont see it, jtag is the only way to fix it
So I guess at this point it doesn't matter what I do - just unplug it or shut down Odin first....
Interesting, Odin still sees it and COM is still yellow. But I don't hear a response from Odin when I press the buttons on the phone.
Trying again.....
Pull battery, hold both volume buttons and insert USB cable from PC..... Release volume keys after about 5 sec.... Push volume - key after that try to flash with odin

[Q] Samsung S6 (SM-G920V) bricked

I have a Samsung S6 (SM-G920V) Verizon 32 GB. It was rooted with Ping-Pong Root (apk).
I try to install TWRP. At the restart, my cell phone would not start more. Apparently it was not compatible with my version of mobile phone.
TWRP not installed, so I understand.
When I turn it on, it stays on a light-blue screen.
I try to install a stock firmware with Odin3 but the application remains frozen with the message 'NAND write start!' for several hours. And sometimes the status message 'Set Partition' appears in the box where it should say 'PASS' at the conclusion flashing.
You have a solution? What?
If I can give links to the files you need, also they are grateful.
Are you in download mode with the phone when you are trying to odin back to stock? Silly question but I have to ask.

The bootloader is locked on Verizon. No custom recoveries for our phones.
I had trouble getting Odin to work on mine once. I went back and forth with 3.09 and 3.10, closed odin, opened it back up and it finally took. Try a different USB port if you have one.

Are you doing it like this?
Power Down the Galaxy S6
Press and Hold the Home Button, Power Button and Volume Down Buttons at the Same Time
Continue Holding These Buttons Until You See a Special Download Mode Menu
Once You See that Download Mode Menu, Immediately Let Go of Those Buttons
You’ll Need to Press the Volume Up Button to Accept the Warning

Have you tried a different cable?

Even a different PC? (If one is available)

If that doesn't work, some people have reported having luck restoring their phones using Samsung Smart Switch. It's main purpose is to transfer data from one phone to another but it also has "Emergency Recovery" and "Software Update and Initialization" sections.

So I trying rebooting using the Power + Volume Down and that's when i realized that the phone has been hard bricked. I don't have anything but black screen. When I try to get into recovery it shows "Rebooting Recovery" and then black screen again. Can someone please help me unbrick this phone? Is there anyway to boot from sdcard? Any way to get into a safe mode or something like that?

No I can't get into download mode. Otherwise I would've done exactly what you said. Download mode isn't working. When I try to get into recovery it shows "Recovery Booting" and then it goes black again.

I'm sorry. I don't think I clarified it properly. When I press the Volume Up + Power + Home I see a set of blue letters saying "Recovery Booting ..." I don't see anything after that. The phone goes back to Black screen and I don't see any of the recovery options.
What do you mean by Download mode "Does not work" ? Can you please elaborate.
Also, try to hold the download mode key combination in for like 20 seconds.

1- Waits for the battery to be empty ( if phone can be charged again )
or
2- use jig to force phone to star download mode

If you're just faced with a black screen when you try to access download mode, try to plug it in with odin and see if it's detecting anything?
I've been in a similar situation where you are now, and by pressing the combinations for download mode for maybe 30 sec the phone restarted itself a couple of times and evetually I got download mode.
One other time I held the combination and I thought I got into download mode but my screen was still black, and just for the fun of it I plugged it into my computer and opened odin.
Odin said "Added", I flashed stock, wiped everything, restarted and it worked! I then flashed stock rom completely again for safety reasons.

Yeah tried all those. Nothing worked. Just gonna send it back to Samsung since it's covered under warranty. Thanks for the suggestions though
Just being curious, if one of those hard brick occur, and i take my phone to service, what would they do to fix my phone? is it even possible to fix it, and how much would they request you to pay?

You voided the warranty as you have rooted and tripped the E-fuse
Happened the same to me because of a xposed module. Black screen with a pulsing blue led. Someone sugested to wait for the battery to drain and then try to connect to Odin. I have not tested it.
At the time i panicked and sent it to Samsung immediately without thinking.
Good luck to you.
