I have read a few threads about this general issue, but they are from a few months ago and wanted to see if anyone had new information.
Quick recap: Got into a hot tub/spa, that contained very chlorinated swirling hot water with my 1S in the pocket of my shorts. I was in anguish over the stupidity for days. First there was nothing (which was a horrible feeling because my 1S had survived a drop in the bathtub while it was on and it remained on after I took it out—I think there is something to say about non-removable batteries here!!), so first, realizing chlorine ions in the water would be far more corrosive than water alone, I flushed it with isopropyl alcohol (every vent and opening I could see)... Although C3H6OH dries rapidly, I ziploc'd it with a few bags of silica gel I found in some shoe boxes and let it dry for 36 hours. Then, just in case the silica gel was not working (the silica was old and I don't know if moisture in the air diminishes it's absorbtion ability), I left it out with the top back part off for 24 hours. After all of that I finally plugged it in, waited 5 minutes, and hit power. I got a perfect boot screen and animation, however, when I got to the home page, there was a bizarre horizontal scroll which reminded me very much of what bad TV reception used to look like. And then 3 seconds later it went black. But the LED light was on. So I left it for a few seconds, and heard a text message alarm... so I knew that only the screen was malfunctioning. Tried to reboot again, but this time screen did not illuminate at all. I decided to unplug and wait another 3 days, and then powered it, rebooted, and the screen illuminated perfectly again....until the home page where I saw the horizontal scroll and then seconds later it went black. I am slowly beginning to accept that whatever damage was done to the screen is permanent. [tl;dr: Screen not working, but phone is]
Mainly I have been apprehensive about calling Assurion because I had read so many reports they were impolite, uninformed, and careless. I thought if the 1S wasn't in stock, I might end up with an HTC One-V. Also my old phone had hboot 1.06, and I highly doubt this will be the case in a 1S replacement.
I think I read your could tilt the odds in your favor if you go online to file the claim and if they don't offer a 1S, to come back in a day and try again, and keep doing this until you get a 1S replacement. If true, this is good news. Secondly, is there a new bootloader that will prevent me from getting root, SuperCID, and S=off??
Basically, I just am looking for advice on dealing with Assurion... the only phone I want is a 1S (or maybe a Nexus 4..though I don't foresee this possibility), but I have to be able to install BakedBean (favorite ROM) or whatever is running the latest OS from Google/Android.... so I am just anxious. And just to confirm, as I am in Chicago/US, using TMO, there is no chance I will get the S3 chipset, right???
Any comments or responses are greatly appreciated!!

I can answer your second question. I S- offed from hboot 2.15. Now we're S-Off capable, the hboot issue is almost irrelevant.
I read that there were still some different things you can achieve with different hboots but if s-off it's a synch flashing a different one if you need to. Good luck with your claim.

Guys, been hanging out here long time now. First incident with about 6 month old captivate. I dropped a glass of water on my captivate yesterday. I immediately removed and took out the battery and wiped it dry. Did not see much of seeped in water so did not do the rice method. Turned on Wi-fi this morning and it says "unable to start wifi". Same with bluetooth.
Call,sms, camera everything works fine. At work, so blew dry the phone and also have kept it next to a warm laptop exhaust. Should I dismantle the phone and try to dry the swb23 chip (wifi/bt) ?
Please help guys !

You can't see the water that got inside. Would have been better to do the rice method before switching it back on but you should do it now nonetheless. Just be warned, you may have cooked the WiFi chip already.
Are the moisture indicators clear? If so, you should send it for warranty replacement. If not, then you can resort to opening it up, wiping the traces, etc.

uggg...may be too late. If you get a significant amount of liquid on or in your phone the worst thing you can do is turn it on.
You should have:
1. immediately removed battery and placed on a paper towel.
2. immediately place phone in a bag of rice for a minimum 24 hours if not 48 before ever powering back on.
Still its worth a try....remove battery and leave in rice for 24 hours....try again....maybe it didn't fry anything when you powered it on...but you definitely need to finish getting the moisture out of the inside via the rice absorption.
I had my old tilt in a pocket submerged in a swimming pool for a good 15 minutes before realizing my blunder. When i realizing it i didn't try to turn it back on. Left it in rice for 48 hours and everything work fine (luckily the phone was powered of when i got in the pool so that probably helped avoid anything frying).
Haha, I once accidently dropped my old Samsung Epix in a bucket of water and it still booted up and worked but most of the features are dead but screen and all still works. It looked like it was wrecked. I got it replaced under my insurance which is a good thing.

but being aware that you shouldn't turn on an electronic device when it is wet hardly requires hindsight though does it? =)
Thanks guys, I have put my phone in a bowl of rice hoping it will get cured.
If not, will ATT not service my phone under warranty ? I read somewhere that replacing the wifi/bt chip costs $70 with ATT. Has anyone done this here ?

How do I check for the moisture indicator ? Any easy steps ?
It is the white (or not so white anymore) square in the battery compartment.

i know i thought it as funny haven't seen that episode in a long time...almost as good as towlie
i am just always surprised to see the posts where someone gets there phone wet (washed in laundry, dropped in toilet, spilled significant amount of liquid on it) and the first thing they did was tried to turn it back on almost immediately.
btw if your looking at the moisture indicators for warranty purposes its quite possible you have to completely open the shell. Usually they have one visible without taking the phone apart but its not uncommon to have a secondary marker inside the phone where it would be harder for someone to tamper with. Can anyone confirm where all the cappys markers are?
Been a while since I had mine apart but I don't recall seeing one inside.

wasn't sure....my Tilt2 had one in the battery compartment and one on the motherboard that could only be seen by opening the casing
I've had my sensation for a little over a month now, and recently I've been having a bit of a problem.
A couple times a week, I'll pick up my sensation from sitting on the desk and use it like normal, but every time I touch/tap on the left side of the screen, the phone has a little give as the screen pushes into the battery cover and I hear a light click. this usually freaks me out, but I'll continue to use the phone like normal (since there's not much else I can do). after a minute of typing and checking email, the screen finishes reseating into the cover, and the phone feels perfectly solid again.
has anyone else had this problem? It's hard to recreate, the first time it happened was while rooting (having usb connected) and it took almost 5 minutes for it to reseat. Now it usually only takes a few touches to reseat, and the best way I have to recreate it is to leave it out in a cool room overnight without charging.
Should I try a warranty repair on this? I doubt HTC will even be able to recreate the problem. I ready don't want to have to deal with it like this, and it has the dust under screen issue as well, so I might be able to push it until I get a replacement. Any advice would be appreciated.

Yeah warranty for sure but if I were you I would leave out the screen coming apart and only note the dust under the scree. I would leave out the screen issue only because they may use that as a reasonm to deny the claim. Not saying this is what happened buty I know working at T-Mobile tey look for any reason not to process a warranty and thy could say that that is physical damage caused by the user. So I would recommend just pushing it together telling them about the dust and calling it a night
I lock my phone and about 10 mins later I go to unlock it and the phone powers up meaning that it has been turned off. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the charge of the battery but it keeps doing this. The other week the phone wouldn't respond for about 5 hours I would touch it and the touch screen was completely dead. I locked the phone and then the screen went black and the touch buttons at the bottom lit up and that was it the phone crashed so I needed to restart it and it just wouldn't work. 5 hours later when I woke up it responded and Bare in mind I ran about 5 ruus to get the phone back to stock so it wasn't a software problem. So has anyone else experienced one of these problems. The random shutdown is my issue at the moment. I'm considering returning it for repair because isn't it true that htc have a 2 year warranty in the uk?
Sounds daft but I'd put a piece of folded paper on top of the battery to ensure it has perfect contact and isn't able to move at all.....I have heard of others who have experienced this issue.
I would also see if you could get another battery for a short time and try that just to rule out that it is an issue with the battery.

Doesn't sound daft it's a great Idea. I have blu-tack on the slide off cover at the bottom to keep it from jiggling as one of the plastic clips broke. I will probably test another battery because they aren't exactly expensive. Do you know anything about HTC's warranty int he uk ben_pyett? Thanks for the help

I have heard multiple users that they simply rang HTC up, complained that battery didn't work and got a new one sent out.....so try that....and attempt if possible to hang on to old one, as if it turns out to be device, you get a free battery
Same issue for me, it drove me nuts. Turned out to be a faulty battery when sent off to HTC/Vodafone for repair. They replaced it so I wonder if it's a known issue.

My phone used to shut down randomly and I searched and found out that it is due to the bad design of battery placement in this phone. All I had to do was put a small piece of paper and it has never shutdown till then.
I'm definitely going to try this, I've been getting lots of resets and I'm relieved it's not a rom issue
edit: how many times did you guys fold the paper over?

i had issues with my phone turning off too, had it slightly wet at one point so i took it to a phone repair joint, they replaced a few things charged me and it had the same problems afterwards, a test battery proved it was the bloody battery all along!
the tech there let me know our batteries have a soft edge that when pushed up hard against the battery slot it slightly deforms, seems like a bad design if you look at the battery up close you can see one where the edges get pushed in a bit, (well on mine anyway) the test battery i borrowed didn't have the edges pushed in.
Had this problem too. Paper did the trick.

hi have same issue on my htc d820ts so i flashed it with new firmware and check the battery connector or power supply area its ok but phone issue is same so please if some one have any idea help me

I being the brilliant human being that i am went into a pool on the day of our independence with my beautiful HOX in my pocket. i sat there for about 5 min, totally sober mind you, then realized what an ass i was. i immediately went inside, shut it off and placed in rice. the next day i turn it on to see if it works and indeed it does. The only visible problem was water under the screen though the screen worked fine. i turned it back off and put it back in rice so as to give the rice ample time to perform its magic. 3 days later i check again and it still works. i decided to switch back to the HOX and things were great. 2 days later however it would randomly shut off and take AT LEAST 30 min before it would turn back on. at the end of the day i took out the sim and threw it back in rice. the next day it wouldnt turn on and thats the way its been ever since. no light when charging ether. ive left it in rice for the past 3 weeks checking every once in awhile but to no avail.
so i know that water damage is the culprit as is my stupidity however im asking to see if there is anything that anyone can think of that might revive my phone? perhaps a batter replacement? or screen replacement? or find out what i shorted? ive taken it apart a little but have held back out of fear of being unable to put back together my already broken phone lol
any help is appreciated. Thank You

Sorry about you phone. Being an electronic technician, I would say you unfortunately made a fatal mistake by turning the phone on before it was totally dry inside. Almost anything on the circuit boards inside could have shorted or partially shorted while wet. I don't think anyone could guess as to what component is bad now without swapping in known good parts. It might have been damaged considerably before you got the chance to turn it off after the soaking, and there's nothing you could have done after that point, although it seemed to OK for a short time. I'm sorry that I can't recommend any further remedies.

alright i assumed as much but thank you for the help. i feel like i can finally let go off my HOX
Take it apart and sell for parts. The digitalizer probably works fine.

You really have to take it apart before putting it in the rice. These things are sealed up pretty good these days.
Might just be the battery. If water got in the pack, it would behave as you described from internal shorting.

At this point, you have nothing to lose by opening it up and drying it out for a week or 2. At least you'll get out any remaining moisture. You may just get lucky.
Also if there is corrosion, use 99% alcohol to remove it.

I think I've killed my phone. I have voided my warranty. Please help/comfort me!
The story so far...flashed stock ROM with ARHD, no problems everything fine. Broke screen in pocket while at work (fuzzy lines across screen), phoned htc to explain problem, they told me to send in for repair but said that the repair would not go ahead if any mods such as custom ROMS had been installed - I told the guy that a custom ROM had been installed (probably my biggest error!). Bought new lcd/digitizer combo from ebay (ukeasybuy), and installed following an online guide (I was very meticulous and followed the guide to the letter with great care). Initially seemed fine but then quickly started doing weird stuff on its own accord, not responding to button/screen touches, would have to press the power button twice to get it to play normal. Yesterday the phone threw a wobbly and crapped out, switched itself off. Tried many times to power on, eventually managed to get into 4ext recovery where I started a restore to earlier nandroid backup, phone switched itself off again after about 20secs through the restore process (battery at this time was at 57%). Now can't seem to power on at all (tried loads of times), no charge light when plugged in, seems bricked.
When installing a custom ROM if you brick your device does it happen instantly or is it something that can develop over time? Only that for a brief period after installation it seemed to be fine, I made sure I had flashed the correct firmware package for the ROM.
I have done some research, but stumped on what to do now...my only thought is that I do have gadget insurance through barclays but wonder if they will just refer me to HTC??
Your thoughts and advice greatly appreciated..

The turning off of the device itself can be a precautionary measure to protect itself. I'm guessing maybe the LCD was installed wrong and is causing a short within the board.

I followed the iFixit guide to install the new screen/digitizer.
As I mentioned I was very careful to follow it carefully, the only extra thing I did was to add some double sided sticky pads inside to stick it back together again as the thin tape supplied was damaged and discarded when taking the phone apart.
Should I try and take the phone apart again and look for any mainboard damage and/or potential areas where shorts may have occurred?
What do you think about the insurance cover, is it worth a shot? what would be the best way to approach the subject?

Maybe you did install it correctly, but there could also be the possibility that the screen is defective. But i would suggest checking the main board for a short.

I have taken the device apart again, but no signs of any shorts / problems or anything suspicious. I don't want to spend anymore cash on a new screen without knowing its that that is causing the problem.
Perhaps its one for the scrap heap
talk to whoever supplied you with the screen and tell them you think the screen is defective. say you have installed it to the letter and it is giving you issues. any respectable ebay seller should be willing to hear you out at least. hope youve not left feedback already though as they may think your a chancer :/
Unfortunately feedback was left once I first turned on the phone and the screen lit up. I will give it a try but I won't keep my fingers crossed!
What about the gadget insurance that I have, is it worth trying to get the phone repaired or replaced through them, or will they just send me back to HTC because the phone is less than a year old?
