[Q] No USB on any rom - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

So usb isn't working on any rom I flash and it's been like that for awhile. It first stopped working about a week after I flashed viperxl 3.2.3 and hasn't worked on any rom since. I've tried aosp roms and sense based ones. I'm running hboot 1.09 and I'm s-on because s-off was found after my usb stopped working. It's not a driver problem because I've reinstalled those and tried using a different computer running a different OS. I also don't think it's a problem with the actual port because the thing charges fine and windows 8 says "USB device not recognized". I've ran out of ideas so I'm asking for help now.

when you say different computer are they all running windows 8? try it on a true and tried OS like winxp, also your computer might not like MTP.

I tried it on two computers, mine is dual booting windows 8 and a linux distro based on ubuntu and the other computer i tried was on windows xp. Before viperxl 3.2.3, my phone could connect fine with all 3 OS's and both computers

I flashed the updates all the way to 3.2.5 after this happened and it still didn't work. I've also tried mounting usb in recovery and I got the same message from windows

Have you tried going to HTC website and installing drivers for windows 8? Also try powering the phone off before you connect usb and then power up phone after it is connected.

Like I said before, I don't think it's a driver problem. Back when it was working i didn't need to install any drivers for it to mount in my Linux os and I've made no changes to the software that it's sporting but now my phone won't mount.

Was just suggesting different things to try. Maybe someone else has had the same problem and can help. I only had it until I updated viper. But I have windows 7 and linux. I know there are different drivers for windows 8.

Bump. I'd really like to be able to get S-OFF

Maybe try wiping and reinstalling a later version of viper or maybe another rom all together. Any jellybean Rom will have mtp instead of disk drive.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium

I am currently experiencing the same problem. Some more info that might help in finding the solution is that fastboot works. I can see my device listed when I use fastboot. However, adb does not list the device.
I've tried messing with changing drive letters, Reinstalling HTC sync, trying usb debugging on and off to no avail.
I also think it's not the drivers, because fastboot works. It may have to do with how jellybean and Windows 8 talk.
One last thing I tried manually adding the hox as a device. And it sees something called "Evita" but when I try to add it it asks for a wps pin.
Hope this helps.

Lots of people have reported these issues with the jelly bean base. It appears there are some incompatibilities that are preventing the phone from communicating with the computer.
The only things I can suggest are the usual tricks:
-Remove and reinstall all drivers (even if you think that's not the issue).
-Be sure your SDK is fully updated. If you dont have it installed, install it.
-Change ports/usb cables.
-Try a different computer.
-Power off and reboot phone while connected.
One of these may solve the problem.

I tried an ICS viperxl build and still no USB, any other suggestions?

Download the latest windows HTC one xl usb drivers.
Steps for installing the driver: 1. Right Click on Computer -> Properties 2. Click Device Manager in the Left hand pane 3. Find your HTC Device under USB Devices or Android USB Devices. 4. Right Click -> Update Driver 5. Locate the extracted directory containing the driver i.e "HTC_Driver_64\HTCDriver\Driver Files\Vista_x64" 6. Click Next and install the driver.

It's either a driver issue or a hardware issue. I'd try it on another pc or set up a vm, try different usb cables/ports as a last resort before ruling out the driver issue.

I'm pretty sure its a phone issue. I've tried multiple computers and cords and I've installed the drivers for my phone on them and no luck. I don't think its a hardware issue for my phone because I can charge just fine from the USB port. I think its a firmware/software issue

Rooting/Boot Unlocking One X - I have tried everything, this is my last resort.

I have literally tried EVERYTHING. I have spent countless hours and actually did not go to sleep last night trying to figure this damn thing out.
I have a HTC One X running Android Version 4.0.4, HTC Sense 4.0, and Software 2.20.
I cannot figure this **** out. Right now when I run the X-Factor exploit, it gets stuck at "daemon started succesfully". When I run the HTC Drivers.exe that come with Hasoon2000's All in one kit, it doesn't even run. It does nothing.
I have restarted my computer numerous times, and I am stuck. So I'm offering this:

It would be more helpful to list the things you tried, instead of just saying "literally everything".
Does adb see the phone?
Did you try different USB ports or cables? Tried a different computer (if possible)?

I'm not sure by what you mean of "does adb see the phone?
If you mean if I open up device manager and it says "adb device", then no, adb does not see it.
I did try different USB cables, I'll try a different port now.
I do not have any access to any other computer at the moment, so no.
Thanks for your time, by the way.

Have you tried updating drivers manually? His toolkit did thesame to me but I just went to:
Right click Computer -> Manage -> driver manager
and updated my drivers from there.
EDIT: Try the post above mine, before this. I didn't even think of that, HTC Sync will install that latest drivers.
Aldo, this is technically a question so it shouldn't be here. It should be in Q&A
The problem is almost certainly the HTC drivers. Otherwise your computer won't see the phone.
You have to do this with just about every new device you root, unless you're staying with the same manufacturer.

Do you have the international version of the phone, or the US version?
it WILL work using the X-factor exploit.
Three main steps:
1.) Download SYNC to ensure latest drivers here
2.) make sure to RIGHT CLICK and RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR (that took me f'in 27 minutes to realize)
3.) follow all on screen instructions.

Check to make sure your use debugging is on, try it. If that doesn't work... I would like to see the prompt. May have to do this through teamviewer.
Drivers may be the problem. I didn't have quite the same problem he is having( fastboot and adb didn't wont to see my device.) Spent 3 days trying to fiqure it out. Finally I gave up and installed Mac Os X on vmware and ran the mac version of x-factor and then I had no problems. You might want to try that. It was the only thing that worked for me. Htc sync, pda net, and reinstalling the driver never helped me. No matter what I did I never could get windows to see my device.

[Q] Windows 8 64-bit Drivers not working

Just wiped all data off my phone before flashing CyanogenMod 10. Problem is, I need to reboot into the bootloader so I can flash the boot.img since I have the 2.20 AT&T update. But I can't get my computer to recognize my phone in fastboot mode. I'm using Windows 8 64-bit, and I've tried multiple threads with Win8 64-bit drivers, and installing the drivers with signature verification disabled. I'm at a loss, hope you guys can help, since I can't turn my phone on until this gets fixed.

Whoa whoa whoa. Downgrading the hboot is POSSIBLE. Holy frick, if this is true, I might hate myself for not discovering this sooner...
EDIT: The toolkit requires running Linux (which I don't have and am not real comfortable with) and involves hard bricking the phone...think I'll keep my hboot for now. Needing to flash the boot.img is kind of annoying, but it wasn't a big deal until I could no longer get fastboot to work...

I'm actually fairly competent in the unix terminal, thanks to using a Mac at work for a while, it's more the danger of hard bricking my phone that scares me.

Yeah, like I said, HTC Sync didn't solve my problem for whatever reason.
However, it occurred to me that I've never had to worry about Android drivers with Mac and Linux, and I was able to use fastboot without a problem from a Ubuntu LiveCD, without resorting to downgrading my hboot. Granted it meant downloading and configuring the android tools in Ubuntu, and I wouldn't want to do it on a regular basis, but it's okay as a workaround, and this whole fiasco has me seriously considering switching my laptop to Ubuntu from Win8 (I could dual-boot), but I don't really have enough disk space for 2 operating systems).

Ok I had same issue when I was beta testing win 8 in Summer. You need to go to device manager and click the show hidden devices on menu bar. It will show you all devices not plugged in. Next find andriod , it should be greyed out. If you don't find install win 64 bit driver. It will still not recongize android when plugged in so click greyed out android and choose Manuel update. Then click browse for driver and go into win 64 drivers and manually choose. There is a lot of utube and other tutorials if you Google manuel install HTC drivers for win 8. Hope this helps ya. Let me know how it worked out

I was able to get mine working with the combo of
1. uninstalling any HTC sync or sync manager and the HTC BMP USB Driver. Basically anything HTC.
2. Install HTC sync. Not sync manager. Go to the HTC support page and you'll see both listed. If you go to the specific phone support page it might not be there. (One S doesn't have the sync program, just sync manager iirc.)
3. Download PDAnet. When installing, It'll give a warning that you already have drivers installed and ask if you want to fix them or leave as is. I chose it to fix and it went though its process and I had working drivers after that.
I think this was already suggested before. I going back and giving thanks wherever due after this post. (On the mobile app right now)
Other easy way if you're using a One S is to download Hasoon2000's All-On-One Toolkit. He's updated the drivers for windows 8. I haven't tried it yet as mine are working so haven't had the need. I would assume his tool for any of the other phones he supports would have the updated drivers too.

Bootloader Malfunction

I'm trying to get to S-OFF using Facepalm S-OFF, however when I connect my One X in bootloader to my PC (I have 2 laptops & 1 desktop) it pops up that the USB device that you connected has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it it does the same thing on all 3 PC's.I originally posted in the Facepalm thread and am now posting here as per thedailyl3af recomendation that I post here since he could not help me. When I connect my One X to the PC the phone is recognized by both the PC & HTC Sync manager (yes I shut down the Sync manager) but soon as I go to bootloader the PC no longer recognizes it. The main reason I want S-OFF is so that I can flash different kerrnals and radio's to try and clear up the One X clearity problem, when I am talking to people most of the I am saying "what" or "could you repeat that". My One X is unlocked and I do have SuperCID. Please Help! Thank you in advance

I have done that, When I connect my One X to my computer, HTC Sync starts, I shut it down. I open command pompt. Then I use adb commands to open bootloader and soon as it goes into bootloader the PC stops recognizing it and says the USB device has malfunctioned. I am unlocked, have SuperCID, Have Super user and am able to use it. I am running ViperXL rom. I have uninstalled drivers on my PC and re-downloaded them and re-installed them many times, so I know it is not drivers on my PC.
Something had to go wrong when I flashed TWRP v2.4.1.0. My problem is everything that evryone is telling me to do goes through bootloader, well if my PC does not recognize my phone while in bootloader how am I going to get past that point. I even tried to flash to TWRP v2.3.1.0, through TWRP recovery, both as a seprate zip file and by starting to reinstall ViperXL (Aroma) installer and I can't even back to TWRP 2.3.1.0 which I know is not as buggy as v2.4.1.0. When I go through the Aroma installer it says that it installed it, but when I go back to TWRP it still says v2.4.1.0.
Was on Facepalm S-OFF Thread and they recomended that I try this forum since evrything they had me try did not work. I am stuck and I just want some straight to the point advice on how to get past this issue. Don't know if this will help but when I am in bootloader this what the bootloader image says, I'm only putting the first part down as you guys know what the rest says.

I already told you to uninstall HTC sync.

There is one more thing that could cause you problems and that is that your cable is bad. If you have another one that will fit your phone laying around you might want to try swapping out.

I just went through all of this. Been having this problem for the past few days. I tried different cable, differenent port, installing/unistalling htc sync, install htc driver/uninstall htc drivers, install android sdk/unistall android sdk, installing pdanet drivers, stopping htc sync, manually uninstalling all android related drivers and reinstalling them. In the end after 4 days of long hours of trial and error I gave up. EVERY solution on the internet fail. Every one of them. Came to the conclusion that something else besides android related drivers is interfereing with fastboot. So the only solution I found was to download virtual box and install a copy of windows in it. Install htc sync on the virtual machine and dont uninstall it. Then plug in your phone while in bootloader connect to the virtual machine and let it install the rest of the drivers. Then fastboot WILL work.
Im not saying don't try all of what everyone is telling you first. What Im saying is that if nothing else works although it may be a bit complicated I can almost guarantee it will work because everything is fresh and there should be no conflicts.

While I agree with you, there are steps you take with troubleshooting to narrow down the cause this way if you don't HAVE to do a fresh install of Windows on a virtual machine, you don't.

Exactly. That was what I was trying to say in the last line of my post.
I had the same problem and tried all of these solutions. Now I tried virtualbox with XP and still no luck. What seems to be happening is that Windows 8.1 cannot even hand off my phone to the virtualbox USB controller because I am getting that error that the device malfunctioned. I've also put a filter to catch all USB devices and enabled/disabled USB 2.0 controller. Any suggestions?

I was trying to flash boot.img trough HBOOT instead of Fast BOOT, very stupid mistake by my hand

New out of Box Phone not connectting to PC

Help needed,
Got a brand new HOXL, unlocked yesterday and from AT&T shipped to me in the carribeans. So shipping back is not an option.
Android 4.1.1
software version 3.18
Hboot 2.14
S-On
Boot loader Locked
Two windows 7 laptops
Two usb cables, one official from HTC and another that I had lying around at home
The phone doesn't connects to a Pc and it charges. However the PC does not recognize the device. And usually says something about unidentified usb device.
- I have gone into device manager and tried different things (uninstalling device/leaving device plugged in while reboting the PC...etc) to get it to work.
- And I have the latest drivers installed via HTC sync.
- Tried installing only the drivers and then also tried installing all of HTC sync.
- I can get into fastboot and while there phone is still undetected by the laptop.
- If i try and open recovery I get a screen with a phone picture on it and a caution sign and after a while phone reboots. Don't know if thats normal or if its cause my bootloader is still locked.
Any assistance will be greatly apprecuated. thanks.
Do you have the latest version of HTC Sync Manager? The connection protocol changed from usb mass storage to MTP so I believe you need the latest version. I'd advise uninstalling HTC Sync and all drivers and downloading HTC Sync Manager from HTC again. The caution sign when entering recovery is normal, that's normal for stock recovery. Are the usb ports on your laptop 2.0 or 3.0?

Thanks. I was able to sort the problem and I've gone on to unlock bootloader, flash twrp and root. Haven't done s-off yet or tried any new Rom. Wanna get a feel of the stock Rom first that way I have a better handle on what I Want or dont want.
My fix was kinda strange. Previously had HTC sync manager fully installed and then only the drivers of HTC sync installed. Didn't uninstall anything. Put my phone into hboot and then went into fastboot then plugged it in. The laptop discovered the phone and stayed downloading a "android 1.0" driver. My hox could now be recognized as a usb device only in fastboot. Test the phone, and this time around windows downloaded and installed all the necessary drivers.
Strange.
Any Rom recommendations? Looking for something as close to stock as close to stock as possible. Currently leaning towards the viper x sense5 Rom.

I won't say any recommendations, but make sure that everything you flash is from this device forum ONLY.

Lol.... of course. That goes without saying. I've been around for quite a bit.
Anyways, S-offed and all that. Gonna let the phone run as stock for a week or two while I explore my rom options.

Nothing here "goes without saying". Its far better for folks to point out the seemingly "obvious"; instead of folks bricking due to something that went unsaid. Aside from your post count and join date, we know nothing of your experience. And even so, just because you know it, does not mean that everyone reading this thread will also know it. So its just good all around to point out even the simple things.

Since you've been around for a while, you should know that asking for ROM recommendations is a no-no on XDA. Just look through the ROMs and see what fits your needs and wants. And its not hard to figure out which ROMs are well liked without asking.

Its normal, as that is the stock recovery. You won't have a custom recovery until you unlock the bootloader and flash a custom recovery.
Get what u mean Redpoint.
And to everyone else this problem has been resolved. I have done everything including using a custom Rom. For those that may have a similar problem this was my fix.
- make sure usb debug is on. put ur phone in hboot and plug to computer. Windows should detect the phone and install one driver "android 1.0
- with phone still plugged to computer, reboot phone. Windows should detect device and install all other drivers.
- done.
