ROOT Question - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Earlier I tried to root my brother's HOX which is on 1.85, and everything failed. My last resource will be updating it to 2.20 with the official RUU and then root it with the one click method. What do you guys think?

Did you search onexroot.com for a method that will work?
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium

Do not use onexroot.com under any circumstances. It does not differentiate between the international one x and the att variant. It could cause you to brick your phone

+1 to that. That website doesn't create anything original, either. They just steal content from XDA, and give little or no credit to the original devs or XDA.
Everything the OP needs is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237
Use the method that specifically meantions 1.85 in bold after the link. Alternately, X-factor or the All-in-One toolkit will work on 1.85, I believe.

There is no one-click method for 2.20, only X-factor, and the All-In-One Toolkit, which should also work for 1.85 (as I already mentioned).
RUU to 2.20 will not gain you anything, and a lot of work for nothing. Will actually hurt you, as the hboot included with 2.20 prevents flashing kernels and radios from recovery (unless you S-off or downgrade hboot).

Root 2.20

I'm still a noob when it comes to the HTC one x. Is there a root exploit that I have missed for 2.20 possibly or is it like the bootloader, still waiting on the release from HTC?

There's about a thousand threads already on this subject. Search function is your friend.
And no, no root for 2.2 has been made available........ yet.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I believe we're still out of luck on that. Unless you updated to 2.20 from 1.85 with superCID. Thats the only work around to my knowledge.
Doesnt HTC have to let us root within 90-120 days from release?
---------- Post added at 01:29 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:27 PM ----------
Ahulab- yes you are correct there or if you were previously unlocked(supercid hand in hand obviously) you could unlock using your original token instead of having to regenerate another

My advice to you would be not to root. Htcdev is down, nothing you can do until it comes back up.
You would need to use xfactor because htcdev will not give you an unlock code otherwise.

You could force the update to 2.20 if you wanted. But 1.85 is easier to root, why are 1.85 root exploits "invalid" they worked for many many users before you?
You need root so you can change your cid because htcdev will not give you an unlock token while it is seem as a AT&T phone.

[q] htc one x future updates

Hi, I recently purchased an HTC one X and I get a message with red letters saying "this build is for development purposes only do not distribute outside of htc", also my htc has been ramdomly rebooting, I want to go back to the stock ROM because I think I might have a custom one and that can be the cause of the random rebooting.
I have the 4.1 oficial firmware but I am affraid to flash it because my phone can become a brick.... The phone was rooted with SuperSU but I have uninstalled it and checked with titanium and I can no longer get superuser rights(I suppose I have succesfully unrooted my phone), I have also checked on bootlader and I have S-ON so I dont know if I am under conditions to flash the oficial firmware without risk(I dont want a brik). I want the original firmware because of the upcoming 4.2 and sense 5.0 update HTC will be releasing.
Thanks in advace for your help.

Is that all??? with S-OFF there is absolute no risk of briking??
Nonononono there's a tradeoff. Because once you supercid you brick if you ruu while s-on. So you need to s-off so as not to brick while RUUing. Technically because there are no longer security checks you have a greater amount of risk If you do something stupid.

Just flash a stock rooted Rom would be my advice.. what are you gaining from ruu? Look at cleanrom, it's forsurely the most stable for this phone... Just my 2 cents cause if ya don't know what you're doing or are comfortable using adb odds are is you will booger up your new to you phone..

Updated firmware that is not part of the ROM. If you read the top post of CleanROM, its recommended to RUU first. Its not "required", but some folks have found it helpful to resolve some issues, like random reboots.

Nothing you do to your phone can remove all risk of bricking when you flash. There is always a risk.
But if you have S-On and SuperCID, and try to install certain OTAs or RUUs, a brick is certain (known brick condition).

You are confused about what CleanROM is. That is just the stock rooted ROM, not CleanROM.
This is CleanROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1655011
In the top post you will see under Installation: •Highly recomend lates Jellybean firmware and S-Off!
Scrosler doesn't explicitly say "RUU", but this is what he means.

If you are S-on and SuperCID (which your phone likely is), and try to take the 3.18 Jellybean OTA, or run the 3.18 RUU, you will brick.
S-off will at least prevent bricking from this particular condition. The other option is change back to the AT&T CID.

[Q] software update?

Hello,
Upon many google searches I have come to believe that this phone has updated above 4.0.4.
I have complications updating so I came here with the following questions:
Did the at&t HTC one x finally get jellybean, or is that for other models?
if yes how can I update because I see get an error on the at&t software update tool, and I don't see anything in the "about" tab for updating like in other models.
Thanks
Edit: I forgot to mention I'm stock and unrooted.

According to the bootloader text, the phone was previously bootloader unlocked, and then relocked. Its probably also SuperCID, since this is the only way to unlock the bootloader on the AT&T version. Phone is also S-on.
Be aware that installing the AT&T Jellybean RUU with SuperCID + S-on will brick the phone. Advise you either change the phone back to the AT&T CID, or achieve S-off prior to running RUU or OTA or you will brick.
