I have not been successful flashing stock recovery as a blob or img file; and yes I have tried.
I have always had to flash the complete firmware which means total loss of apps and data.
You could consider backing up your apps and data with many of the options available. Many swear by titanium backup. I don't use it. Maybe search for backup apps that also handle data.
I use app2zip pro or rom toolbox pro and just bite the bullet for any data lost.
Good Luck!

hey guys i just installed this kings ROM but before that i made a backup , where and how do i get to that to install it so i get all my apps and info back.?
Depends on the recovery you used. Also if you can't answer the next question you shouldn't have rooted your phone in the first place. Do the research first then tinker.....

[Q] Fail to update 2.3.6 after stock flash Skyrocket i727

Can any one tell me what i did wrong?
I used a I727UCALC4_OneClick package to flash my at&t i727 to android 4.0.3. For some reason my home button and search button did not work so i said to return back to stock.
I flashed the phone with SGH-I727-UCKJ2-k0nane thru ODIN to return to stock 2.3.5 . I then tried to do a OTA update to 2.3.6. The update downloads and starts installing , reboots the phone and fails to finish.
Any help please ? Thanks
I tried doing this myself last night. Remember you will lose your root once taking it to 2.3.5, so re root using Odin, then, reboot. Then follow the root instructions as outlined by user k0nane here at xda. Then get into clockwork mod recovery mode and restore to the backup version you did of 2.3.6...much easier process than trying to flash stock. Hope that helps.

You might have renamed the backup, the backup might be corrupt, or you did the backup with a different version of cwm than you are trying to restore it with.
If this helps I got here a copy of my mhx lite 2.3.6 I made before going to 4.0.3

Its mhx superlite 3.1 but if the rom will work you can later on flash whatever you want. Atm you seem to be stuck with an unusable phone so anything is better.
Go to sammobile.com
make an account
go to firmware section
type i727 in the box
scroll down and download the tar
extract with 7zip
Flash in odin
Then drink beer and such
i was able to flash tru cwm a att rom that worked. Everything works ok now.
It is possible to transfer my data from the backup into this working rom ?
Just flash modem. To match firmware....

[Q] Using ODIN erase all data?

I've tried searching and just can't seem to find a definitive answer. I'm wondering if when you do the root method using ODIN (This one) if it erases all the data on the tablet or not?
The reason I'm asking is I've got a tablet for my son and I would like to try and back up some of his save games off my tablet and transfer them to his new (nook color already rooted) so he doesn't have to start over from scratch. I'd probably like to do this using Titanium Backup which I can figure out myself, but I just don't want to try the rooting method without having at least a little hope that my files won't be erased.
Thanks,

Thanks for the reply. I was afraid that might be the case...
Does anyone have any ideas on another way I can back up the game saves without having root? Or better - I saw on the Note 10.1 forums that they've got a way to achieve root by just flashing a root-injected stock rom through the stock recovery. Is something like that possible with our tablets?
(For reference this is the posts/pages I'm referring to about the note 10.1 root method where they don't lose apps, etc: Here and Here)

As i think so he played the game in stock rom non rooted then you want to root tab to backup
So you could flash via odin the root files and no erase will be done as total erase by odin occur only when you flash a full stock firmware not the root files

Sorry I am so late replying back to this thread. College stuff came up which I needed to focus on.
I'm confused on the exact process I need to follow to flash only the Root files through ODIN. The instructions in that tutorial are for flashing the "CWM Root for Tab2 10.1" files through ClockworkMod Recovery. I've not had any experience with flashing things through ODIN and I'm not sure what I need to do to make sure that happens correctly. Does ODIN support flashing just root files like this (even if it looks like they are designed for CWM)? I was under the impression that if it was designed for CWM then it must be flashed using CWM.
-- Zeustopher
Does anyone have any further insight into flashing just the root files through ODIN and not the recovery? I just want to make absolute sure that I know what I'm doing before I give it a try.

As a general rule, .tar files are for odin and. zip files for CWM. You can use my guide (link in signature) to root as it's a bit more detailed.

Firstly If flashing the same rom [yes I am talking about the whole firmware package not just root files] It won't wipe your data partition.
I've experienced it myself.
I've flashed the whole stock firmware downloaded from sammobile.com to the base stock firmware but it didn't wipe my internal memory.
My apps, contacts and messages were intact.
but having a backup is advised.

Just in case you wish to have root without leaving your stock recovery then try CF_Auto_root.tar, you have your stock recovery with you.

Rooting means pushing su libraries into system directories which is not possible with odin. There these custom recoveries come handy.
since root adb is accessable using these recoveries, they can easily install root into your device.
A healthy advice: Since you flash your device using odin [the only way... yet] for rooting. It will hit the flash counter in your device. use triangle away app from play store to remove it and get it to 0 so that you have your warranty with you. also remove your root and custom recovery before going to a service center..
Flashin tru odin won't remove your data..
it'll just write over the "data" thats included in the rom
if u use odin just to root..
it well just push root to system/app and /xbin or bin folder..
so u wont loose anything

How Do I Backup the Operating System?

I rooted my S3. I have not unlocked it.
I would like to backup the android operating system, the apps, and the data before I allow the recent OTA update.
Based on my research, I believe I can use titanium to backup everything except the operating system. How do I backup the operating system?
I tried the Volume Up/Power/Home Button restart. It gives me the option to restore but not to backup.
What am I missing??

Thank you for the speedy reply. I did a quick search and found quite a bit written on installing a custom recovery including on the S3.
It appears that I can only back up to a custom ROM such as ClockworkMod Recovery or TWRP Recovery and not the base ROM as it is on the phone now. Is that correct?
I have ROM manager on the phone so I expect the ClockworkMod Recovery would be the way to go.
Nope, CWM and TWRP are custom recoveries. You'll have to install one of those in order to backup. Go onto the app store and search for EZ Recovery. Use that app to install the recoveries(it's the easiest way for someone new). Then you just boot into your recovery and do a backup of your current setup.
Download EZ Recovery and flash CWM then boot into recovery and choose the backup option.

Custom recovery will backup stock rom. You will not be able to install any OTA until untill you Odin back to stock.
Thank you for the replies.
I guess I should have included in the initial post that all I have done is root the phone......I think.
I never unlocked the phone with Ez-Unlocker
I never used Rom-Manager either.
I did install SD Speed Increase and increased the SD cache size from 128kb to 1024 kb.
Thats it.
Does this information change the previous recommendations?
No, just install EZ Recovery and follow the directions listed in one of the guides in the stickies.

Yes, if you have a custom recovery you cannot accept an OTA. The install will fail. You will have to Odin back to stock in order to take the OTA.

Thank you for the input.
There is a lot of information on this topic but its not easy to determine which of it applies to my situation. I feel pretty good about being able to Odin back to stock but I'm not sure I want to take the risk of doing that (probably not much risk) just to get the latest update.
I expect the best thing for me to do is decide to either 1) go ahead and install CM10 (I think that's the one I would want) or 2) go back to stock and stick with the Verizon software. I'd like to get Jelly Bean now, but I'm not sure its worth the risk. We'll see.
Thanks again!
If u use ez recovery and flash back the stock recovery u can then accept the ota just fine. As long as u haven't messed with any system files you are good. Then just re root it once ota is done.

Thanks for the info.
I have installed EZRecovery and it seems pretty straightforward. I'm still trying to decide if I want to go for a Jelly Bean ROM now or just wait.
I'll just keep reading until I'm comfortable that first, Jelly Bean will give me improvements worth the risk, and second, I won't brick the phone.
I have been fooling with computers since the 70s but Android is somewhat different and it will take a while to learn something about the architecture.
Thanks again.

If new I would flash an ICS rom first and get you a stable daily driver setup and backed up. Regardless of what you read all JB builds are buggy to an extent since they are all ports. The advantage of Android is as long as you have a stable Nandroid you can experiment with more advanced ports. Backup IEMI also and be careful jumping back and forth between AOSP and TW based roms. This is where the most problems come up. From what I've seen if flashed AOSP base it is best to Odin back to stock before going back to Touchwiz.

Details of a rom from Nandriod Backup

Hello
All XDA members
I have a problem that made me raise a question an that is an we know the name of a rom from a nanriod backup either on PC or on Andriod.??
Ideally PC would be good !!

Most ( not all) recovery apps let you name the file. Are you asking how to find the file? If so, it likely is in a folder named backups. You can move the file to your pc and keep it there if you are out of storage space.

Sorry if I wasn't clear please consider the following situation :
I have around 12 backups of different roms and I dont want to restore each n every backup for sake of simple file or simple thing. So any tool which can read the name of Rom? Probably the buildprop or about phone info will help
Sent from my A110 using Tapatalk
Well, if you gave a single boot system, your recovery should "see" all of those files. If so, you can usb them or copy to a sd card and move them. Just move them back when you need to.

Simply,it is a backup of your OS and settings. It is extremely valuable if you flash a new ROM that doesn't/won't function. Then, you can use your recovery to, well, recover your previous WORKING OS.
When/if you begin to flash new ROMs (and other tools that may corrupt your OS) you should always.first.backup.your.files.
Can I assume I would need to wipe data/factory reset, etc. before I restore the backup?

So, that depends on what your starting config is, what you upgraded to.
For instance, if you are stock and flash a ROM using the stock recovery, then likely yes. You should and you would use the stock bootloader to wipe with.
If you have loaded a new recovery (TWRP, CWM) then read(!) the instructions on the developers page. My example is that on my tablet, once I upgraded to TWRP, I SHOULD NOT use the factory wipe option as that would wipe both TWRP and the backup files. That would cause lots of problems so, don't assume.
Typically, you do need to data/reset/wipe prior to flashing a new or recovering to an old ROM, just be careful what/how you do it.
I have a CWM recovery installed and installed custom Rome before. I have always redid everything again. So a backup would save me a lot of time.

Then, unless the ROM developer states otherwise, you should make backups, wipe data, install ROMs and recover your device using the Nandroid backup.
You likely shouldn't use the "factory" wipe data as that would cause issues.
