Exactly- why bother paying $ extra / month..... you can just tether

The 16GB N8000 is $632 all-in including overnight delivery from Handtech in the UK. The VZW Note is $599 plus tax making it about the same price. The N8000 is literally a phone so you can use it as a spare or when you're making video calls or on long conference calls. VZW will kill the phone and MMS feature in their version. You'll receive updates from Samsung or can use Odin to install the latest on the N8000. You're at VZW's mercy for their version. You can use the N8000 on one of the AT&T MVNO's on a cheap voice/data plan, use AT&T's DataConnect plan and pay-as-you-go ($30 = 3GB), or add it to an AT&T FamilyShare account for $10 a month. VZW is $40 a month for 4GB or $10 if you add it to an existing shared account. With VZW you'll get LTE with the N8000 you'll get HSPA+ on AT&T. You'll also have to live with the giant VZW tramp stamp on their version which is the largest gaudiest logo placement ever seen on a mobile device.
Happy deciding.

Hilarious. I will be getting one as I have a line open doing nothing. You of course are correct about Verizon and their tactics, but since I am locked in for another year, I will have a note 10.1 for that time. Besides, we'll get it rooted and change everything anyway.

Hey, folks who picked one up already - would you be able to do me a favour please?
If you have a T-Mobile or AT&T (or even international) SIM card, would you be able to put that into the VZW Note 10.1 to see if the tablet is SIM-unlocked out of the box? I know Verizon does this with some LTE devices (like the iPhone 5) lately.
Thanks very much!

SIM restrictions on unlocked European Note3

Latest News - Oct 9th 2013 - Clove, who specialise in sim-free/unlocked phones have suggested
that the Russian unlocking service at:
http://puman.ru/?selectlanguage=English
may be a solution for those concerned about the regional lock.
More info in the Clove blog at:
http://blog.clove.co.uk/2013/09/25/samsung-galaxy-note-3-sim-limitations/
Whether or not the Note 3 Verizon (US) "Developer Edition" will be regionally locked remains to be seen,
At least the bootloader will, according to reports, be unlocked.
More skimpy details at the Samsung/Verizon page at: http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones/SM-N900VMKEVZW
More Recent News - Oct 6th 2013 - Chainfire appears to have created an app to
get round region locking for the Galaxy Note 3 SM-N9005 (MI7 firmware) and rooted
You can buy Chainfire a beer (£1.99) by downloading the app from the Play Store at:
http://pkg.to/eu.chainfire.regionlockaway
There is also a thread started by Chainfire at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=46187852 where meanies(!) can download it free.
Recent News (01:30 Oct 3rd 2013)
Android Authority: Galaxy Note 3 region lock is an issue after all, Android 4.4 update may lock older Galaxy handsets http://goo.gl/KjgVwc
Previous news (1st Oct 2013)
A significant number of users still claim they can't use "out of region" sims despite having first used a sim for the region the Note 3 was intended for which is the way Samsung have said is the way to 'unlock' the regional sim lock.
A number of users in this thread who found their Note3 was still region locked despite following the Samsung advice have successfully unlocked their Note3 regional lock using a Russian unlocking web site at http://puman.ru/ Although I am the OP of this thread, I do not have an out of region Sim to test this out myself - so no guarantees but read the posts!
Pics say it all. The Note 3 "unlocked" models are still locked to regions like DVD's and thus not very attractive to globetrotters or international purchasers who are being asked to pay £600 or so for a crippled device.

That better not be the case, mine will be delivered today and i'm in the U.S. next week. If it doesn't work out there like my Note 2 does, it's going straight back.
It will only accept European sim cards. As long as your UK mobile opeator has a roaming arrangement with a US carrier, you will still be able to use the phone but you won't have the option of using a sim card from Verizon, Sprint etc.

I daresay there will be frustrated customers. I havr not heard of such a restriction on a "sim-free" "unlocked" device before. All we used to have to worry aboit were the radio GSM/3G/4G/LTE bands.

I think this is an absolute disgrace to be honest, why have an unlocked, tri-band phone that wont work when you go on holiday unless you pay the absolutely disgusting roaming prices that UK networks charge?? I'm so annoyed about this, who the hell are Samsung to decide that i cant put a U.S. sim in a phone I've paid over £600 for

Logically its all bluff, but im thinking of a way if they could actually do that. I mean restricting the phone not accepting any carrier unless its from europe region that means samsung have full access on europe database or certain information that they could use it on their software.
99% the restriction is being applied from the software side and 99% the pro devs on here will find a way to remove that restriction. But even though ive canceled my order and just called them to confirm my cancellation. Many negative feedbacks will follow up very soon.
I wonder why, I do remember reading an article stating Samsung wanted to stop retailers selling a German device in the UK for example.
For those affected, hopefully something simple could be found to alleviate the problem, like flashing a modem from the respective country perhaps (yeah I know, wishful thinking haha).
Sent from my GT-N7100 using Tapatalk 4
I am really angry about this. This is a BUSINESS phone, so many business users would have a local sim to EACH country they visit!!!
I travel to the USA a lot and always use a local SIM there, which saves thousands! Now I cannot do this?!?!?!
If I cannot unlock this "unlocked/sim-free" phone, then this is certainly the LAST Samsung I will ever buy.
Luckily got mine from O2 didnt get any such warning on box. Requested unlock code will be issed next few days.
Sent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk 2
I believe it would just be a software restriction based on the IMSI of the SIM card inserted.
I posted about this awhile back and saw the image on this thread confirmed it. Clove.co.uk were the first to post the announcement about the restriction and it truly is a disaster for Samsung to do such a thing with the Note 3. There currently is no law Europe demanding such action so really does question their reasoning for this.
I have already contacted Samsung and I'm awaiting any comments regarding this.
I will update here and my article http://geektech.ie/index.php/europe...ote-3-reported-to-not-work-outside-of-europe/
My note 3 has just shown up, big sim restriction sticker included. Do you guys think its worth keeping the phone and waiting for a software fix to the restriction or should i send it back? I'm just annoyed about that i'm in the U.S. next week and i wont be able to use the £40 sim card i've ordered because its american. I'll also be in the U.S. again next year so while it may only be a small issue, its still an issue. Worst case scenario is that i get the girlfriend to take her iphone and put the sim card in that so i can tether.

The E.U. wants to eliminate the roaming cost for.all countries across. Maybe has to do with that. Nobody with Note 3 here with a foreign sim card ( non Eu) can try to see what's happening?

HUH? Sprint wanted to charge you for the SIM??? Was it a corporate sprint store? or just a kiosk or an affiliate type of store?
Assuming you are a Sprint customer, Corporate Sprint store should not charge you for the SIM, and if they do, you can call customer care and ask them to sort it out.
I got mine shipped from Sprint Worldwide support - but it was too slow - took 5 days, and I was getting impatient, so I went to a Sprint Corporate store nearby and asked them for one - they gave me one free of charge (they kept telling me - "we don't have one for the Nexus yet" - and I reminded them that the ones for the S4 or the HTC One would work just fine)

If phones are locked and you pay the full amount, you still need to get the unlock code. I popped my sim in right out of the box. The Sprint version is the exact same phone. Same model number, same build number, same kernel version, got the same 125mb update right at the power on. There is not one bit of Sprint branding or bloatware. I know my phones...this is my 8th smartphone and my 4th Nexus (S, Gnex, N4, N5) and I can assure you that it is the exact same.

'Activation code' is their term for MSL. Some techs aren't familiar with 'MSL'. Or simply ask if you can get your Activation code/MSL.

T-Mobile will work just find if you swap the SIM. You may or may not have to go and put in the correct APN settings with the TMo SIM in, though mine works just fine. I've also tested with AIO Wireless.
You may also have to go in to *#*#INFO#*#* and set the radio to 'LTE/GSM auto (PRL)' mode. When going back to Sprint only you'll want to use 'LTE/CDMA auto (PRL)' mode.

Does AT&T "identify" Nexus 5 as smart phone

I am referring to using an AT&T sim on AT&T account, not MVNO.
What people used to do was get a non-smart phone data plan, unlimited for $10/mo, then change to smart phone. Different reports came of AT&T identifying these non-AT&T phones as smart phones, vs. other cases where AT&T did not identify the non-AT&T phone as a smart phone. So I was just wondering about the Nexus 5 since AT&T doesn't carry it and doesn't sell it.

All AT&T MVNO share like a IMEI database sort of how T-Mobile shares their blacklisted IMEI with AT&T
if a AT&T MVNO blocks it so does AT&T they share the database on witch to block.. it doesn't hurt to try though

He is just saying it as an example. Someone reports the phone as lost or stolen, it can be blacklisted across carrier.
Back to your original question, yes you will be detected as a smart phone. Google/LG shares imei database with att. Just like nexus 4 and gnex.

He is just saying it as an example. Someone reports the phone as lost or stolen, it can be blacklisted across carrier.

Thanks.
Do you know if other manufacturers share IMEI DB, like Samsung?
The AIO thing is different I think in that data is blocked not because you are on a smartphone but it's blocked on that plan.
AT&T can easily identify said phones as a Nexus as they share a similar IMEI. I don't know if LG/Samsung send AT&T a list of their IMEIs but either way it's not hard for AT&T to add it to their list based on just 1 sample.

Pardon the ignorance, but what is AIO?
The basis for my question is, and the example that I brought earlier, the same phone but different model; Galaxy S2 has its international unlocked version, but also AT&T sells its own version of S2. This is not the case with the Nexus - it only comes unlocked, AT&T does not sell the Nexus, this is why I am questioning this.
Thanks.
I have AIO and it works flawlessly. Just gotta manually put in your APN just like with any other carrier and an unlocked GSM phone.

Aio is a pre-paid wireless carrier which is wholly owned and operated by AT&T. It uses AT&T personnel, networks, towers, etc...

OK, but I am not talking about AIO or MVNO, I am talking about an AT&T sim card on an AT&T family plan (outside contract). You have a 'dumb' phone on your family plan, you add non smart-phone data for $10. You take the sim and put it in a smart phone that was not purchased from AT&T, is not AT&T phone and AT&T doesn't even sell it (e.g. Nexus 5). Will AT&T network - again, I am on AT&T, not AIO - identify it as a smart phone. Looking to hear from people with experience on this. With my personal experience they did not identify other phones in similar situation, even phones that they sell. I am just curious about the Nexus 5 in particular.
Thanks.

Even if they don't pick it up, eventually you will get blocked and they will tell you to upgrade your plan
Edit: XDA isn't the place to ask this question not that many people have that plan you want try Howardforums
Edit2: i asked for you.

My wife originally had the nexus 4 on the non-smartphone data plan on att and was never detected. I just upgraded her to the nexus 5 and now they automatically added a data plan for her I was looking at my account and it is not registering as any type of phone yet though.

Are all Nexus 5's unlocked?

Might be a lame question, but want to make sure I don't get burned before I buy this. Found a craigslist post for an almost brand new Nexus 5, apparently from Tmobile. Here is the title "GOOGLE NEXUS 5 BY LG T-MOBILE 16GB"
Will I be able to use this Straight Talk? Could this somehow be locked to Tmobile under contract? That is my only concern.
Thanks for any help
Yes. Although you'll need to buy the right one for your country (D820 for North America, D821 for everywhere else)
So far, no Nexus 5's have come locked so it looks like they're all unlocked.
Some older Nexus' did turn up locked though, but so far no one has seen a locked N5 so the assumption that all N5's are unlocked is a safe one.
So I picked up a N5, 16GB black with box, no charger which is no big deal for $260. I get back to work and the phone isn't wiped, lots of d**k pics. I can't believe some people.
Ha!

So I swapped my active Tmobile SIM to the Nexus 5 I just bought and I can't get it registered to Tmobile. Am I screwed or do I just need a new SIM?

Phone could be blacklisted and stolen which would explain no charger or box.

Just got off Tmobile Chat and the IMEI is blocked. I'm so f'ing pissed. Tmobile said to contact the owner and have them call Tmobile. I'm so confused and I got majorly ripped off. Good times.

Do you have any info of the person you bought if from. I always try to get a license plate of their vehicle just in case.

You are screwed if the guy you bought it from isn't the original owner, that could be the reason why it wasn't wiped.
From what I hear the only way to get it delisted is to have the original owner, the one that reported it stolen call in. If he is the guy that you bought it from have the police make him call T-Mobile or give you a refund.
THis is going off topic, but speaking of unlock phones.
What frequency is the Northamerican one missing that makes it can't work over seas?
Google play store shows that is has almost every frequency band needed.

Most information on Bands for the D820 is taken from google's info, which I'm sure you won't believe but is actually not accurate. The maximum LTE bands the WTR1605L included in the MSM8794 of the snapdragon 800 is 7, which is actually the most any chip today can do - BUT teh google site and many other sites list 9 bands - which isn't quite right.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2131705
The D821 does:
LTE: Bands: 1/3/5/7/8/20
The D820 is reported to do:
LTE: Bands: 1/2/4/5/17/19/25/26/41
However, looking at the box of the N5, you'll only see 7 listed:

Unlocked on sprint?

Will the unlocked version from Samsung work on the Sprint network?
I see all other carriers supporting, but no Sprint.

I believe Sprint merged with T-mobile and all branded phones will be T-mobile but to answer your question, yes you will be able to use tmobile and unlocked version on the sprint network.
I know they merged, but you can't use tmobile phones on a sprint account yet. Which is why i was asking.

From my experience, I've had a tmobile branded note 10 plus on the sprint network for 8 months. This is how I know but you can do your own research.

On Best Buy it shows unlocked can be activated for ATT, Verizon, and Sprint.
I had a Sprint account but ordered the T-Mobile version thinking they were connected -- but they're not yet. After 22 years with Sprint, I decided to move to T-Mobile and now I have 5G service (don't think Sprint itself does yet until they merge the networks) and my Spring phone number transferred in about 10 minutes. I'm not looking back.

I received my unlocked Z Fold 2 from Samsung, picked up a 4 pack of sim cards from the Sprint store, which I was told included the one I needed. Couldn't activate it online. Called Sprint, gave them my IMEI and was told it could not be activated on the Sprint network. They are sending me another sim card, but couldn't guarantee it would work. Curious how this is possible.

I spent an hour at the Sprint/tm store. They tried all 4 sim cards in the pack, called their tech support and still couldn't get it activated on Sprint. When checking the IEMI on the Sprint checker it says clean. They could get it to work with a T-Mobile sim card. Yours is activated on Sprint? Was the sim card used labeled A,B,C or D? Thanks?

Once when I called and gave them the IMEI number, he said he couldn't find it. Since it's so new -- and even released earlier than expected, he thought it wasn't in the database yet.
He told me he'd look into getting it added and would call me back the next day, but never did. Bye, Sprint.

In case anyone is still wondering. Yes. You will need the Sprint sim card ending in 416TQ. It does not however come in the Sprint 4-1 sim kit. Finally, got one from Best Buy after dealing with Sprint directly for a week.
Ordered online from Best Buy. Already had SIM in it. Had to chat with Sprint to get it activated, but works great.
