Thanks.

Thanks. Is this 100% confirmed, or is it a "maybe" situation like it used to be with the International Version of the S2, whereas in some cases they did and others they didn't?

I am referring to using an AT&T sim on AT&T account, not MVNO.
What people used to do was get a non-smart phone data plan, unlimited for $10/mo, then change to smart phone. Different reports came of AT&T identifying these non-AT&T phones as smart phones, vs. other cases where AT&T did not identify the non-AT&T phone as a smart phone. So I was just wondering about the Nexus 5 since AT&T doesn't carry it and doesn't sell it.

All AT&T MVNO share like a IMEI database sort of how T-Mobile shares their blacklisted IMEI with AT&T
if a AT&T MVNO blocks it so does AT&T they share the database on witch to block.. it doesn't hurt to try though

You lost me. Why would MVNO block a phone? Say I buy a Nexus 5 from Google, can I not use it with StraightTalk for example? Why would it be blocked?

He is just saying it as an example. Someone reports the phone as lost or stolen, it can be blacklisted across carrier.
Back to your original question, yes you will be detected as a smart phone. Google/LG shares imei database with att. Just like nexus 4 and gnex.

Do you know if other manufacturers share IMEI DB, like Samsung?
The AIO thing is different I think in that data is blocked not because you are on a smartphone but it's blocked on that plan.
AT&T can easily identify said phones as a Nexus as they share a similar IMEI. I don't know if LG/Samsung send AT&T a list of their IMEIs but either way it's not hard for AT&T to add it to their list based on just 1 sample.

Pardon the ignorance, but what is AIO?
The basis for my question is, and the example that I brought earlier, the same phone but different model; Galaxy S2 has its international unlocked version, but also AT&T sells its own version of S2. This is not the case with the Nexus - it only comes unlocked, AT&T does not sell the Nexus, this is why I am questioning this.
Thanks.
I have AIO and it works flawlessly. Just gotta manually put in your APN just like with any other carrier and an unlocked GSM phone.

OK, but I am not talking about AIO or MVNO, I am talking about an AT&T sim card on an AT&T family plan (outside contract). You have a 'dumb' phone on your family plan, you add non smart-phone data for $10. You take the sim and put it in a smart phone that was not purchased from AT&T, is not AT&T phone and AT&T doesn't even sell it (e.g. Nexus 5). Will AT&T network - again, I am on AT&T, not AIO - identify it as a smart phone. Looking to hear from people with experience on this. With my personal experience they did not identify other phones in similar situation, even phones that they sell. I am just curious about the Nexus 5 in particular.
Thanks.

Exactly- why bother paying $ extra / month..... you can just tether
The 16GB N8000 is $632 all-in including overnight delivery from Handtech in the UK. The VZW Note is $599 plus tax making it about the same price. The N8000 is literally a phone so you can use it as a spare or when you're making video calls or on long conference calls. VZW will kill the phone and MMS feature in their version. You'll receive updates from Samsung or can use Odin to install the latest on the N8000. You're at VZW's mercy for their version. You can use the N8000 on one of the AT&T MVNO's on a cheap voice/data plan, use AT&T's DataConnect plan and pay-as-you-go ($30 = 3GB), or add it to an AT&T FamilyShare account for $10 a month. VZW is $40 a month for 4GB or $10 if you add it to an existing shared account. With VZW you'll get LTE with the N8000 you'll get HSPA+ on AT&T. You'll also have to live with the giant VZW tramp stamp on their version which is the largest gaudiest logo placement ever seen on a mobile device.
Happy deciding.

Hilarious. I will be getting one as I have a line open doing nothing. You of course are correct about Verizon and their tactics, but since I am locked in for another year, I will have a note 10.1 for that time. Besides, we'll get it rooted and change everything anyway.

Hey, folks who picked one up already - would you be able to do me a favour please?
If you have a T-Mobile or AT&T (or even international) SIM card, would you be able to put that into the VZW Note 10.1 to see if the tablet is SIM-unlocked out of the box? I know Verizon does this with some LTE devices (like the iPhone 5) lately.
Thanks very much!

If you are subsidize by Sprint, then maybe it's lock. But if you pay full price, then you are overpaying but it should be unlock.

HUH? Sprint wanted to charge you for the SIM??? Was it a corporate sprint store? or just a kiosk or an affiliate type of store?
Assuming you are a Sprint customer, Corporate Sprint store should not charge you for the SIM, and if they do, you can call customer care and ask them to sort it out.
I got mine shipped from Sprint Worldwide support - but it was too slow - took 5 days, and I was getting impatient, so I went to a Sprint Corporate store nearby and asked them for one - they gave me one free of charge (they kept telling me - "we don't have one for the Nexus yet" - and I reminded them that the ones for the S4 or the HTC One would work just fine)

If phones are locked and you pay the full amount, you still need to get the unlock code. I popped my sim in right out of the box. The Sprint version is the exact same phone. Same model number, same build number, same kernel version, got the same 125mb update right at the power on. There is not one bit of Sprint branding or bloatware. T-Mobile will work just find if you swap the SIM. You may or may not have to go and put in the correct APN settings with the TMo SIM in, though mine works just fine. I've also tested with AIO Wireless.
You may also have to go in to *#*#INFO#*#* and set the radio to 'LTE/GSM auto (PRL)' mode. When going back to Sprint only you'll want to use 'LTE/CDMA auto (PRL)' mode.
I recently bought sprint gs5 with bad ESN. hence I dont live in usa, o thought this shouldnt be a problem.
Ok I received the phone, I managed to activate it with our locale cdma network " no sim card used "
But I noticed some features not available such as usb tethering, hotspot wifi calling, raoming section.
I updated to NE5 but problem exists.
I finallu rooted and installed MOAR rom, usb tethering still not available. However wifi calling was there but frozen! After defrozen it, when I press on it takes me to self test mode!!
Hotspot didnt work either, I get msg saying " insert sim card"
Any great developer plz help me with those issues, also are they related to sprint activation?? Any solution to bypass.
Thanx alot in advance.

This is an LTE phone so it will want a sim for some data stuff.
That said, because it's running sprint software and not on a sprint network many things simply won't work. You would need to flash it with different software probably or change various advanced settings.
The WiFi calling takes you to self-service because for Sprint it actually adds a feature to the users account and uses a third party provider sprint uses for the WiFi calling feature. This won't work with another provider. You would need that providers stuff.
Simply put don't expect a phone from one provider on another to work 100% or perfect. You would have been better to get an international version or one with generic software.
Beyond that can't help you any, maybe others can.

He just said these things are tied into the phone. You will have these issues until pure AOSP/AOKP ROMs come out. Should have purchased an international version of the phone instead of purchasing a stolen phone.

Bad ESN ALWAYS means its stolen in some way or another.
WHO KNEW IT WAS BAD ESN - Sprint Galaxy S5
I have just been scammed on Craigslist by buying a Samsung Galaxy S5….I checked all the things I could :-
the ESN on Swappa.com
checked that the seller had the box and all accessories
checked that the IMEI number matched on phone and box
saw a mail document for the seller with an address on it
got a receipt
paid a "normal" price that was slightly discounted
checked the hardware using Antutu and CPU-Z
made calls and texts from the phone
checked for internet connection
checked the fingerprint scanner and software version
Beyond all this what else could I have done? Now I have an expensive toy that Sprint won't let me activate what else can I do?

The device will do no good for you in USA, but it may work in other countries if their carrier provides CDMA coverage. using DFS.
I suggest that you return the device to the seller and claim your refund. specially if they didn't infrom you it has bad ESN.

Many thanks for helping me YemenHero…..I can't contact the seller because this was a private sale through Craigslist and the only contact telephone number I have was attached to this phone and it is no longer in use. I cannot contact the seller by any means possible. The seller lied to me about the cellphone and so I'm stuck with trying to find solutions to recoup my money.
I am not xda knowledgeable so can you please help explain what DFS is?
Once again, many thanks.
Flashing it most likely won't help unless you're on a carrier that doesn't carry the same CDMA MEID blacklist as Sprint. Changing the MEID won't work here because of the IMEI certification being broken when you do it and therefore granting you no signal.

You will never be able to activate that phone on Sprint or get any help from them for it because of the bad ESN. It was blacklisted because it's stolen or the previous owner refused to pay their bill. You were foolish enough to buy it anyway, and you will have to deal with your poor judgment and crippled phone.

While people like me are foolish enough to buy phones (or any used item for that matter) please note that this is what often allows others to upgrade their phones and buy the latest technology. If this did not happen many people would not buy the latest products like s5 and the new technology would actually cost a lot more than it currently does.
When buying the S5 I took diligent steps including checking the esn with swappa.com and sprint. Getting the sellers details, checking out the functions of the phone and paying a reasonable market price were the other pieces of the puzzle. Apart from buying from a dealer what other steps would you have taken in this instance…..I would welcome advice on this issue because it is easy to pass judgement on those that have fallen to the scammers out there.
This post is about how to unlock so let's focus on working on this please……thanks.

There is nothing to focus on. You cannot unlock a Sprint S5 because it's CDMA. You would need to flash it and you cannot because there is no way to get past the IMEI certification. It is simply not possible.
My post was not aimed at you. It was aimed at the OP and other foolish people who know phone is blacklisted with a bad ESN but buy it anyway.

Hate to burst your CDMA bubble, but ever since the S4 all Sprint phones are domestic GSM CAPABLE. This doesn't mean that it'll work out of the box. A) the device needs to be internationally unlocked B) you must patch the domestic blacklist or bypass it completely through the service menu. I've domestically unlocked the Sprint S5, BUT it won't work because it's not internationally unlocked. As soon as that happens I'd be able to pop in a GSM SIM and get signal, guaranteed.
PS: To future posters please do not ask me how to domestically unlock the S5 unless you're going to share how to internationally unlock it. As mentioned above, a domestic unlock does nothing without the international unlock and by domestically unlocking your internationally locked phone you'd be wasting your time.

Hi there,
I apologize for my late replay, just saw your msg..
actually Yes, its same as sprint GS4, msl pwd is 000000. Just make sure you flash proper PRL for your network. Also make sure it support at least 3G data. I had to flash many PRLs till one worked fine with me.
The ATT site says they're currently not unlocking the Gear S3 even if the full purchase price is paid:
"This watch is designed to work on our AT&T network with 4G-LTE Bands 2 and 5 and 3G-UMTS 850/1900MHz. At this time smartwatches are not eligible for unlock to use with other carriers."
and
"Due to the nature of the smartwatch devices, it’s not possible for these to be unlocked. In order to do so, you would need to be able to remove and replace the SIM card. With any smartwatch, the SIM is integrated into the device itself and therefore not removable."
Does anyone know if both of these statements are entirely accurate? I've never used a device with an embedded SIM but I know that devices with a SIM slot can be unlocked regardless of what the carrier states. Will I be able to unlock a Gear S3 Frontier with LTE from ATT to work on other carriers?
I think until people start getting them and messing with them it's tough to answer. Mine is shipping for the 18th. I will have it in the next few days. Not the same, but I did use ADB and unlock the bootloader on my Huawei watch and even installed TWRP and a custom rom. Being this will be an AT&T device I am doubtful things will be unlockable. The e-sim excuse they told you does sound plausible. If you can't change the Sim, I doubt you can change carrier. Time will tell.

My understanding is that these watches have an esim which is software. With that in mind, I doubt the phone is actually locked in the same way our phones are. The issue might be that they can't erase the network values which are written to the esim. They might be written to ROM which might explain why it would be a bit more difficult to erase. Of course this is just a guess so time will tell.

It's an interesting question. First we'd need to know if the ICCID and SIM number used in carrier versions is customized and unique by carrier. For example, did AT&T provide Samsung with a sequence of SIM numbers to pre-load on all "their" phones? Second do any or all of the carriers have the ability to input foreign (generic Samsung or from another carrier) SIM numbers in to their system? For example, if all AT&T's SIMs start with 88888 can they manually input a SIM provided to them that starts 12345? As far as I know you need an AT&T provided SIM to access their network from any device. I have no clue but if the first item is yes and the second no an AT&T Gear would only work on AT&T's network. It could roam on another network as an AT&T device but couldn't be used natively on that network.
If the above ends up being true a non-carrier LTE Gear bought from Samsung couldn't be registered on AT&T's network. Same thing with an AT&T Gear on T-Mobile's network. What were people's experiences with the LG Urbane LTE and Gear S2 3G? Whatever applied to those devices would seemingly apply here.

The Gear S3 and S2 are significantly different from the LG. The Urbane 2 uses an physical SIM (not an eSIM). Furthermore, it isn't carrier locked. Also, there are folks using it on prepaid service providers like Cricket. I don't think that any of this is true for the S2.

Hey, I was looking in to the possibilities of getting an ATT gear s3 and bringing it to T-Mobile. And you seem to have cracked it. I have been looking hours to find something that said it was possible. So did you buy it from att for the full price and then requested unlock? And u are not an att customer right?
May I advise that the two variants (TMo and at&t) do not *exactly* have the same supported bands. That may mean spotty coverage in standalone mode, depending on your network location.

I to have requested the code from At&t which they have sent me but the instructions state to remove sim before entering code?

Well. I looked into Samsung site for tech specs and both versions -R765T(t Mobile) and R765A (ATT) support same LTE bands -
B2 1900, B5 850.
It's the mix of AWS and LTE bands that is different. Though the frequencies are the same, what type of network they support on these bands is different. And that may lead to having service in an area or not.

Yes but, did you actually get it unlocked? That's the question
I have also received an unlock code from AT&T, but haven't figured out yet how to unlock the device. I'm going to call AT&T tomorrow and see how to go about doing it. I'll post back when I do.
Also, any thoughts from anyone on using QPST/similar software to edit the radio? I know we're still a ways away from root, but I'm surprised nobody has done this with the S2 yet (that I know of). Seeing as its a Samsung device, I would imagine that its possible just like with the S4/S5/S6. I'm going to try it and see eventually.

You may have unlocked it but I don't see how your going to activate it on another service or have you done that? My understanding is that the S3 has an esim and its not like a phone where you can put in another providers Sim card and if I understand Sim. Cards and Sim numbers are tied to the carrier so how are you going to transfer a esim number from one carrier to another?

S3 doesn't use sim card at least not the good old sim "card" It has an e-sim built in that can be reprogrammed using the pins under the lower band.

And who's going to reprogram it? Is there an adapter to hook the pins to? So what your saying is to get a simple card and program that number?

I believe Sprint merged with T-mobile and all branded phones will be T-mobile but to answer your question, yes you will be able to use tmobile and unlocked version on the sprint network.
I know they merged, but you can't use tmobile phones on a sprint account yet. Which is why i was asking.

On Best Buy it shows unlocked can be activated for ATT, Verizon, and Sprint.
I had a Sprint account but ordered the T-Mobile version thinking they were connected -- but they're not yet. After 22 years with Sprint, I decided to move to T-Mobile and now I have 5G service (don't think Sprint itself does yet until they merge the networks) and my Spring phone number transferred in about 10 minutes. I'm not looking back.

I received my unlocked Z Fold 2 from Samsung, picked up a 4 pack of sim cards from the Sprint store, which I was told included the one I needed. Couldn't activate it online. Called Sprint, gave them my IMEI and was told it could not be activated on the Sprint network. They are sending me another sim card, but couldn't guarantee it would work. I spent an hour at the Sprint/tm store. They tried all 4 sim cards in the pack, called their tech support and still couldn't get it activated on Sprint. When checking the IEMI on the Sprint checker it says clean. They could get it to work with a T-Mobile sim card. Yours is activated on Sprint? Was the sim card used labeled A,B,C or D? Thanks?

Once when I called and gave them the IMEI number, he said he couldn't find it. Since it's so new -- and even released earlier than expected, he thought it wasn't in the database yet.
He told me he'd look into getting it added and would call me back the next day, but never did. Bye, Sprint.

In case anyone is still wondering. Yes. You will need the Sprint sim card ending in 416TQ. It does not however come in the Sprint 4-1 sim kit. Finally, got one from Best Buy after dealing with Sprint directly for a week.
Ordered online from Best Buy. Already had SIM in it. Had to chat with Sprint to get it activated, but works great.
