I flashed firmware 3.33 yesterday and the phone ran very well all day today however it has stopped booting now and even won't take me to the bootloader to access anything.
It happened just now after I took Titanium Backup and then tried to reboot into recovery to backup current ROM however it failed and instead landed me into the Bootloader which didn't allow me to go into Recovery.
The last thing I remember is that it was showing "Bootloader warning" overhead just below -Firmware-3.33- title on which I choose to turn it off.
After turning off, I tried switching it on but failed. Tried many times but nothing worked out. Waited and thought the phone might boot up after keeping phone and battery separated however no luck either.
Did I just bricked my device for no reason?

Sorry for the long post but I am having some strange issues with my Sensation XE and after spending almost US$300, I am not happy and want to enjoy this device :crying:
I purchased Sensation XE from eBay last month and it got delivered to me by the Feb 15, 2013 since then I have been struggling to get experience on this phone.
Not sure if these issues have been posted/reported before, I couldn't get anything hence thought to post it anyways. I am still keeping some hope
I have been facing some very strange and some rare issues with my Sensation XE, after week long research and self testing, I thought to get help from community.
Battery Discharge: [Known and common issue] - My phone's battery gets discharged very quickly... it does not survive even 4 hours in standby time.
Phone Heating: [somewhat abnormal and known issue] - The phone keeps on heating when it's on and is in sleep. The heat is always at the bottom of the phone due to which it sometime heats to a level when touching this area is impossible without burning my fingers.
What's abnormal and strange is that the phone keeps heating even when the phone is turned off and the battery is inserted. Not sure if anyone else have encountered such a problem.
Battery Back Door: [Very Abnormal and Strange Issue] Well, as it sounds, it is a very abnormal and rare issue I have encountered so far. I am aware that the battery backdoor has 4 antennas built in to boost signals for both Voice and Wifi however it is sending my phone into Sleep of Death (SoD). The phone works fine (except issues mentioned above) until when I put the battery back door on, then the phone either stops responding and freeze else it goes in SoD. I don't know how to fix it.
Signal: [Know issue] I have very poor signal on my phone. It sometimes keep my phone reported as "Switched off" and no visible signals at all. Sometime switching Airplane mode makes it work but most of the time does not.
I face the same problem with Wifi wherein the phone catches very poor signal from my router wherein other devices have 90+% network. This happens even when the phone is placed right next to the wifi.
So far, these are the the problems I have noticed on this phone. I couldn't do much because the phone never gives me that much time.
I have been active on HD2 dev forum for long but these issues are not common for me, neither I am a dev.
To fix these issues, I have tried different ROMs, Kernels, OC'd and UC'd the phone, still no sign of relief. I once again apologies to post any repeated issues and for posting such a long/lengthy post.

Hi,
It sounds like you bought a dud. (any chance of returning it?)
Go to settings/power and untick fastboot.
Power the phone off.
Power on holding volume down and power button together.
You will be in bootloader.
Write down all you can see,and post back here.

Thanks for coming so quick
I haven't asked the seller yet. Initially, I thought it was a battery problem since my HD2 also had some issues with one of six battery pack I had hence I requested the seller to replace the battery which I am going to get in a day or two.
I didn't try the "fastboot" thingy which I am going to do now.
Here is what I see on the bootloader

Hi,
Your radio is all wrong.
I have not seen that version before (I think it is quite old)
If you can keep your phone on for a bit,try to update the firmware (which includes a newer radio)
Look HERE
3.33 Universal firmware is what you are looking for.
Read the thread carefully.

Thanks Mate... Indeed the ROM is running like butter. I am on JB CM10.1 nightly.
This phone has stopped heating too much neither the battery backdoor is creating any problem... no more freezing no more lags. It's been almost 20 min the phone has not encountered any sleep of death which itself is a good sign. Though battery charging is still very slow, I am going to get a replacement battery in a day or two, maybe that resolves remaining problems.
I don't use this phone for daily use because of mentioned issues. I will see how it works tonight and then will take carry it to my office to see it's real performance.
Bump... the first post has been updated with my BRICKED Device updates

I was on their IRC and realized that S-Off devices cannot get benefit from this project, I am going to try it anyways.
I am right now downloading Linux live CD so that I can do all these things.
I hope I won't have to send it to a JTAG

Hi,
Good luck.
Any chance of a return to the vendor?
by JTAGing your device the warranty will be voided...
try pres and hold power 1 min without battery inserted and see if the phone boot up...

I contacted the vendor, he is okay to give me a replacement. Just that I am lazy shipping it back to Hong Kong. Plus shipping is also going to be expensive.
Shipping back will be my last resort, probably after this weekend.

Can you confirm if JTAG can really resolve my problem? If no then I am not going to waste my time anymore and will ship it back to the seller for a repair/replacement.
Thanks guys.

Just got a confirmation from the seller, I will be shipping it tomorrow itself...

I noticed on the battery drain thread a few people have described this issue where the screen flicks on and off occasionly while in standby.
I have noticed this myself many a time on the occasional chance that i glance over to my phone and see the screen flick on and off. I was hoping it would just dissapear but still happening. I guess this deserves its own thread to find the cause?
Obviously its hard to pinpoint what does it, so far my gut feeling is telling me it only flicks on and off when wifi is enabled? Dont think ive noticed it while on 3g only.
i have this flickering too ,even when wifi is disabled.
I have had this issue too & it gets very annoying during the night
I have tried disabling 3g,WiFi,auto brightness, pocket mode but it didn't help
i am currently on stock ROM ,do the people using custom ROM also face this problem?
Yea im using coredroid, i imagine its a nasty battery drainer too
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA App
Same here.. Went to the htc service, told them about it, they scratched their heads and said that they could send it to waranty but if all you guys are facing the same problem i guessed i shouldn't bother because the new one is goig to do the same..
Also, excuse the off topic, but anyone having problems with the "locations" maps. Mine fails to start. I mean, it starts then exits in about 2 secs..
I've read abut this problem in other threads on this forum but over the last few months have never experienced this problem On my own device
I've not encountered this issue on either my base stock rom or on any of LBC ROM version which I've run for the last month
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA Premium App
when you're sure it'll happen at least once within time x, i would install eclipse + adb-drivers, hook up the phone, and then have a look at the dmesg/logcat log as soon as the display turns on...
might be worth a try to finde the reason for this behavior, which i luckily don't experience...
The odd thing I find is that only some people get this, perhaps people who suffer from this should post their country of purchase, rom and radio version so we can attempt to identify if this is related by something in common
I'd also suggest that people who suffer from this also try factory resets and try running stock without any applications so that we can see if this is caused by a particular application or is indeed rom our device related
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA Premium App
Yeah, you're right.
last night when I was playing with my friends, I took a glance on my phone, it's just a bling bling bling occasionally. I don't know why.
I'd closed wifi but 3g was on.
Haven't experienced this but I'm pretty sure it's a kernel problem for the wake-ups. I saw in the battery use menu some tiny blue bars while the screen was off -> wake-ups.
If we can catch it on a log and report it to a dev, I'm sure he could fix this.

has anyone else with this problem tried changing the radio?
Noticed this again tonight.. i swear i dont notice it during the day either theres a process causing it at certain times or i simply dont notice it during the day as im at work.. how would i go about debugging this issue? Thx

@bongo1 i also face the problem only at night
can you tell me your radio, hboot, kernal version & the roms you have tried?
@ben_pyett the problem happens only during night & when my room is dark & it doesnt happen in a regular interval so it maybe difficult to spot, can you try staring at the device for 2 mins or so in a dark room once more for me? just so that i can confirm
& i tried factory reset ...& i am on stock rom ,cant try others as i am s-on
Im running Core Droid latest V1.1, rom is probably irrelevent as i have noticed it on other roms too.

radio 38.03.02.11_m

I would tend to follow your idea that it only happens in dim lit circumstances, i have particuarly noticed it in a dim lit room however its possible we only notice it because its more noticable in a dim lit room.... will investigate further tonight.
How would i go about abd debugging this? im not realy sure how to start.
I'm reasonably sure that my device doesn't have this problem, as every night since I've owned it (about three months now) I've sleep with the phone on the table next to my bed as it's also my alarm clock (about 12inches from my head).

i suspect the same thing
the only common thing we have is the radio rom & the hboot ,i doubt the hboot has anything to do with this...
can you try changing the radio if possible? i am unable to as i am s-on
im not sure how to use adb myself as i am still a noob
but try reading these guides (not sure if they are what you are looking for)

So I'm not crazy... Noticed this once at night. But it was so short and the display brightness was so low that i wasn't sure if it was only the reflection of the light outside.
I'll try to hang it up with logcat tonight. I also noticed that the phone wakes up even if the display isn't active at least 20 times last night. Though it didn't hurt the battery that much.. This is annoying me.
Okay. Tried just about everything there is to try (except for radio image flash), still no solution..
The issue persists with stock rom, s-on, s-off, rooted, unrooted, lbc rom, virtuous rom, etc.. It flickers all the time, at about 2-5 min intervals, more noticeable at night (well due to the absence of light i guess). Wondering if i should send it to service as still in waranty.. The problem is that i do not mind the screen flicker but the battery drain associated to this. Let me explain how bad this is.. I disabled everything: backgroud data, wifi, mobile network, screen backlight to minimum, sync, pulled out sim and sd card, fully charged and went to bed. After about 8 hrs of sleep when i woke up phone battery was at 76%. Do the maths and that's 24% battery leakage due to just android os, sense stuff and this stupid flicker.. As i'm seeing this is not a common issue as this thread is not flooded with replies. In a dilemma right now as i really want this fixed but i'm kinda' reluctant to send it to waranty as the other aspects of the phone are brilliant and don't want to end up with a refurbished replacement phone or with the other problems associated to the DS (screen edge backlight bleeding, squeeky casing, poorly mounted display).
My specs right now are:
AlphaRevX S-OFF

HBOOT-6.98.1002

SAGA LBC ROM v0.5.4

Hi, been away from the forum, as i have just got back from holiday
i am having a prblem with my desire.. i went to florida, left my phone at the theme parks, desire s, zte blade, ipod touch in the car for 8 hours in around 30-40 degrees. since then, my desire s has been faulty.
my touch, and zte work fine, but my desire has a major problem now. it works normal in use, but when i lock it and put it into sleep mode, when i try to unlock it , it will start up the whole phone again. basically, it powers off on its on randomly in sleep mode.
The problem is really annoying. it is also very common on the desire hd..

Im running leedroid port from dhd. i thought the rom was the problem, but it isnt. i flashed other roms, hydrogen, but the problem still exists. shoud i test the stock unrooted ROM?
i dont think it is a software fault anyweay. the phone was working fine for 2 weeks running leedroid, then suddenly i have the problem now.
i have emailed htc, and awating a reply now. so will i need to get it repaired? or replaced as a faulty unit?
Hmm.....does sound like the heat has done it in....damn!
Although there are plenty of other countries where the temp is close to this all the time, you would have thought....
Try installing close to stock ROM with no apps installed, (Yes perform wipe). I'd suggest installing battery moniotr widget and get iot to log full details (including apps), force log in sleep mode so that you can at least see when it dies and what temp it's at when it does and what apps are running at the time.
Although does sound like warranty return issue (at least this way you get a new motherboard and possibly even a new device)...(you might want to check the recommended running temp levels in the warranty book first - just so that you get your story straight)
Positive note: at least its still functioning so that you can re-install RUU etc and mask S-OFF before returning it?
ps
Mines done this a couple of time over the last few months...although I always figured that I've hit the buttons in my pocket?

I'll try installing battery monitor widget , and go back to stock, s-on
So do you think it was the heat that damaged the phone? My ipod touch and zte blade were left in the car, but they work 100% fine
I've checked the warranty thingy, it says do not expose battery to 60 degrees or higher.
But to be honest, I dot really know how hot it could get in the car... Florida is very hot!
I'm just waiting for a reply from HTC now
The phone works fine everywhere else, its just this problem.. I tried cooling the phone by switching it off and taking the battery out, and leaving it for an hour.
The thing with this problem, is that it is entirely random! It sometimes last ages in standby before the problems occur, or within 10 minutes.
How can I prove it to HTC??
I wouldn't worry too much about your phone doing the same once in a few months or so
Mine is happening at least 6 times a day!!
I'll try to keep the thread updated to how it all goes
Cheers Ben

Hello,
Could have been the heat, but could simply be a faulty motherboard....either way a new device might be a good thing, 1/2 way through your warranty period.

I have not yet gone to a clean rom yet but selectively remove apps till I find improvement....
Meaning there are others with the same problem !

Mine has the same problem and has never been exposed to extreme heat. I think the power button is faulty and after some use it get stuck some times and closes the phone down. I started pressing the button with less force and the random power downs stopped happening.
What happened? I have not found a relationship yet. It seems random too me so far. If it happens once more i will go to factory default plain htc stock rom (i have not fiddled with the device or rom)
If it then happens as well i know enough. I will see and report me experience in due time.
Btw its android 2.3.3 build 1.47.401.4

To be honest, I think its more of a hardware problem!
My phone was running fine on stock and custom roms for 3 weeks, then it just started last week when I left my phone in the car
A lot if desire hd users had the same issue as us!
I'm awaiting a reply from HTC now
Will update on what they say.
the heat probably was the culprit
my phone reaches around 45c at times due to the high outside temperature here, but i don't have any problems so i guess yours was heated more
but if you can, try changing the battery it may help
Random shutdown
I also suffered from this. A new Radio + ROM + cleaning some apps has solved the problem.
Thanks for the replies everyone!
I received the following e-mail of HTC today:
Dear Oliver Loh,
Thank you for contacting HTC regarding your HTC Device.
I understand that you are currently experiencing difficulties with rebooting and random restarts.
I believe that the reason for this is because of a hardware issue.
In order to rectify this I would like you to perform the following actions:
) Make sure your device is fully up to date:
Menu - settings - about phone - system software update - tick box - check now.
) If possible test the device with or without a (new) battery, SIM, SD card.
To assist you further I have attached links to the HTC Support Site which will enable you to work through the above step by step:
http://www.htc.com/uk/support.aspx
Once the above has been completed you may be required to do a factory reset, for your convenience I have detailed the steps below:
) Restarting or factory resetting your phone:
Restarting your phone (soft reset):
If your phone is running slower than normal, an application is not performing properly, or your phone becomes unresponsive, try restarting your phone and see if that helps solve the problem.
Please remove the battery, wait for a few seconds, reinsert the battery, and then turn the phone on.
Performing a factory reset (hard reset):
Note: Factory reset will not remove the data and files that are in your phone’s microSD card.
Factory reset is not a step to be taken lightly. It will permanently delete all your data and customized settings, and will also remove any applications you've downloaded and installed. Be sure to back up any data and files you want to keep before you do a factory reset.
Performing a factory reset via settings
Performing a factory reset using phone buttons:
If you cannot turn on your phone or access the phone settings, you can still perform a factory reset by using the buttons on the phone.
1. With the phone turned off, press and hold the VOLUME DOWN button, and then briefly press the POWER button.
2. Wait for the screen with the three Android images to appear, and then release the VOLUME DOWN button..
3. Press VOLUME DOWN to select CLEAR STORAGE or (Factory Reset), and then press POWER.
4. Press VOLUME UP to start the factory reset.
Should the above solution not resolve your query please can you confirm the following and reply to me:
1) Has the device been recently updated/upgraded or changed:?
2) Has a new application been recently downloaded:?
3) Please can you turn off all applications and UN-install any which are unessential, As they may be causing issues:?
4) What have you already done/tried to troubleshoot your issue/s:?
5) When did your issue/s occur or re occur:?
6) Is you device or applications fully up to date:?
Should the above fail to restore your device to full working order, the device (MAY) need to be sent for repair.
I hope that this information meets with your requirements, should you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us again.
If this response has resolved your query, and you have no further questions please close this ticket by following the link below. Upon closure of the ticket you will be invited to complete our Customer Satisfaction Survey which should take no more than 1 minute to complete.
To send a reply to this message or let me know I have successfully answered your question log in to our ContactUs site using your email address and your ticket number xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.
Sincerely,
Robert

And today i can confirm the problem has occured 8 times today. Now it can do the problem up to 3 times in a row, when the device is in use.
It happened this morning 3 times, 2 in the afternoon, and as i am typing now, i just booted into recovery and the phone crashed on me twice at the recovery screen.
I will reply to HTC and tell them i have the stock rom etc, and will s-on my device and send it for repair soon hopefully
So what's your uptime since you changed??

If the problem persists through multiple ROMs, it definitely sounds like a hardware problem. I'd return it to stock and have it sent in for repair under warranty.
Haven't read all replies... but this is a well-known battery fault (and isn't necessarily triggered by either heat or humidity... it is most commonly a manufacturing defect).
My very first HTC Desire S handset had almost exactly the same issue, only the battery from that handset would power off the phone only when the GSM picked up a signal (I.E.... you get reception, but the phone kills itself instantly. No reception, phone ran fine).
O2 replaced the entire thing under warranty (but I sneakily kept the battery to prove my theory). I placed that battery into my replacement handset, and behold.... EXACTLY the same thing!
Put the new battery in, everything works perfectly.
Bottom line: don't replace the phone, just replace the battery!

Hmm.. it does make a bit more sense that the heat could have affected the battery rather than the phone itself.
The battery is probably unable to run under low power that is used when put in sleep mode so it just cuts itself out altogether.
My hypothesis...
i have the exact problem!!
i thought i was the only one... mine turns off at least 3-4 times a day for no apparent reason.
at first, i thought it was the heat during the summer.. but now that the temperature is getting milder i dont really think thats the cause.
sometimes when i place it on the desk and i tap it or just bump it hard enough it'll turn off.
i think its more of a hardware problem then software.

That's sounds like a bad battery connection, I'd take it back under warranty {if possible} as the chance of a fried eMMC chip must be high!
Hi, I have searched all over this forum and Google, and tried every solution on offer, but to no avail. My last resort before condemning the phone is to see if anyone has any bright ideas.
Basically every time I flash a new ROM the phone is fine for a couple of days, then it starts switching off randomly this gets more frequent over the next couple of weeks, until it becomes unusable. I have tried different Sim cards, different sd cards, no sd card at all. Complete wipe of everything including sd card. Running with no apps and everything stock except signing into Google. I have tried sense roms and non sense based roms on ginger bread and ics. Everything works fine except for this problem. I feel it's not a hardwear problem due to it being ok for a few days after new flash.
My current ROM is the stock ruu, which is on its way to getting bad again after flashing it last weekend. I received the small update to the settings today which added the missing 3rd party app option, it hasn't switched off since then, but then it had only been a few hours, I am not hopeful!
I haven't tried a new battery as the battery life seems fine, and it turns off sometimes when sat on the desk, so not a loose connection or anything also the way it gets worse in time after a fresh install. Have tried the setting network to gsm only and other network options, but no luck.
I really hope someone can suggest something as I love this phone, but it is pretty useless to me, I use it for phone calls at work a lot and as it is have no idea if it is off or on in my pocket.
Cheers in advance for any help
Tom
Oh yeah, I bought the phone second hand so a return to get it fixed isn't really an option
Ok when you boot into the Hboot screen does it say S-off or does it still say S-on. If it still says S-on then the previous owner probably used HTC Dev to unlock the bootloader and not Revolutionary. If this is the case then click on the link in my signature that says "S-off explained". Maybe this will shed some light on things and maybe it will help you fix your issue. But do not just rule out a hardware issue as bad NAND blocks can cause this same issue sometimes.
Hi, i had the same problem and bought a new battery. Since the battery change everything is working and had no rnd turn off since then.
Cheers for the replies.
I got S-OFF on the phone, as far as I remember via revolutionary. It says Pyramid pvt ship s-off rl. With locked at the top, as far as I can tell from reading this is normal?
I really hope its not something inside the phone that I can do nothing about, would be an expensive mess for me to find myself in!
I will try ordering an ankar battery, they seem cheap, and worth it any way, if it solves my problem, then even better.
Cheers for both your replies, I will continue the hunt.
i have the same problem...but when i torn on the phone the battery are drasticaly down!
i have a S-ON Sensation with stock Gingerbread

I've got a similar problem, I'm S-ON, ICS Vodafone but it was happening before the update too.
It seems much more likely to happen for me when on lower battery levels, and something like the camera flash firing will often turn it straight off.
As mentioned above when it comes back on the battery level is way down on what it was/should be. It also seems more likely to occur after it's happened once in a day and sometimes I'll only get halfway through unlocking the phone before it turns straight off again.
It never happens while charging - pulling the battery and reinserting it after a restart seems to make it more reliable and makes the correct battery level come back up.
Seems to me like it may be a battery issue but as I'm having some other issues too I'm sending it back to HTC and going to see what they say/do, if I get it back and still have problems I'll buy an Anker.
Its a battery problem guys. Glad Im not the only one.
See my problems here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1604924
But after some scouting around its a battery fault. Cant wait to order a new batt this week. Phone is driving me crazy
I got my new battery yesterday. So we shall see how it goes. Only time will tell. It will be nice to get a bit more out of the battery as a bonus. Fingers crossed, I shall keep people posted for future reference.

I had this problem but came to the conclusion that it was the SIM rather than the battery - ran the phone for a day or two without a SIM and it never shut down, then when I reinserted the SIM (and took more care to ensure it was correctly inserted) I haven't had the problem since.
Might be worth looking at?

so how i agree with u , coz i tried this 1 when my phone was shutting down 10 time an hour and it didn't shut down but the battery drain still there until i did the battery calibration thing & it's ok now..
yeah I don't think the power off thing has anything to do with battery drain, but often the battery readout will stabilise after a few charges and discharges - after resetting battery stats the readout can often be a bit erratic.
It might be.right.. but he Still have a battery drain issue he must calibrate the battery. Tucker to hit thanks

Will try the sim thing, but my battery is comletely goosed.
Tells me I have 40% and then shuts down. Restart and its saying empty
hey for those of you using ICS Rom's make sure you have updated your Firmware/Bootloader to the newest version. I was having the same problem with my phone for the last week. Would randomly shut off even if battery was 60 percent and then start into bootloop with random battery percentages shown. Someone on the Insertcoin Sense 4 thread suggested I update my Bootloader and it seems to have fixed my problem.
Link to upgrade firmware is:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459767
Make sure you download the latest one (3.32)
UPDATE: Problem hasn't been solved...just took a while for it to return. Not sure what's wrong and I'm really annoyed that I can't figure it out. Kinda disappointed that the new battery hasn't fixed your phone Tombon26, I was just about to go buy a new battery myself. Really hope someone can help with this.
So a new battery hasn't cured the problem. Will try the calibration, although I have done it before, but can't remember if it was before my problems.
I am a bit confused by the upgrading firmware because I have the official HTC ruu on my phone, which I thought was the newest of everything, and haven't rooted the phone since, so I thought this would make the phone as close to stock as possible without s-on.
As far as I can tell my battery doesn't randomly jump down after it switches off. Not sure if this is a good sign or not!
So frustrating the whole thing.
Cheers for peoples contributions

Hey guys, this is the first time I am writing on XDA although I have read and followed many of the threads on it.
My phone suddenly decides to shut off with no reason and the battery level go crazy. I would reboot the phone and see the battery level go back to normal. I has happen while listening to music or even answering a call.
I had this problem on ever since my device received an over the air update from Bell. (Mind you I am not a different provider: Telus).
Since then I S-OFF, ROOTED and started installing custom ROMS and kernels. The problem seams persistent... I even exchanged batteries with a buddy of mine who has the same phone and had similar problem to mine. Not sure what to do.
Any suggestions?!

I have had this problem off and on since March on T-Mobile USA with a phone purchased in June of 2011. Intermittent shutdowns, reboots, crazy battery levels, etc. In the end, anything that increased the battery drain even a little would cause the phone to shut down. After several calls to tech support, and a visit to a retail store, I finally got a warranty replacement for the phone. No other battery replacement or software fixed the problem, including the OTA 4.03 update. My speculation is that the battery voltage sensor was faulty.
The replacement unit is working great (so far.)
In summary, if you are still in warranty, flash the stock RUU, restore S-ON, and go for a warranty exchange.

try this fix in this thread it worked fine for me http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1622683 peace
I am going to try the try the trick with the battery push trick. If this is the case, I will be EXTREMELY happy. If not, I wonder how will I be able to bring the phone for warranty on bell since the phone is on a different network.
Any way, I will post an update to see if it fixed the problem!

so ,how does it going..?
So far not a single restart. I will have to wait a few days before I can confirm but my phone was not restarted since last night, when I did the little trick. My phone also charged faster during the night (it used to get stuck at 70% and then go extremely slow). I don't know how this is possible or if its a placebo effect but so far it seams to work. I will know for certain in the next two days.
Everything was fine on the phone until I tried out AOKP 4.2.2 alpha 2 a week ago, When I had the rom installed the phone would randomly shut down. I thought it was because the rom was not stable enough so I flashed CM9. On CM9 the phone would shut off every five minutes it was that bad. I then installed Miktouch 0.7 and the shutdowns for the most part stopped. The phone will shut down now and again and it always shuts down after I use youtube for 10+ minutes or use the camera for several minutes.
I tried to revert to stock and see if that fixed anything but when I boot into the bootloader it looks for PG59IMG and says no image found and nothing happens. I got the PG59IMG from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1878329
Any help is appreciated.
I swear it sounds mechanical...maybe battery related. Just starting out of the blue like that and it being cross ROM and all. It should just flash that file automatically from hboot though. Are you sure you copied the file to the root of your SD card? Did you relock your bootloader with *fastboot oem lock* before running it? Sometimes it doesn't like it if the usb cable is still plugged in. (for some weird reason) If you're still S-On, did you flast the boot.img file thru adb with *fastboot flash boot boot.img* after flashing your ROM?
Oh yeah, you won't be able to flash that PG59IMG if it is newer than the hboot version listed in your bootloader right now. That is until you get S-Off with the wire trick.
Check some of that stuff out & get back to us.
I agree it sounds mechanical, most likely a bad battery.
I confronted similar behavior over the weekend and a testing with a new battery allowed me to point a finger at an older, aftermarket battery as causing the shutdowns.
Sorry for the delay in the reply - real life got in the way.
I thought it was also mechanical but the shut downs are MUCH less frequent in Miktouch than on ICS roms so I thought it may have to do partially with the software.
I'm S-off, used the revolutionary method years ago. Never issued the "fastboot oem lock" command and I've never done anything related to fastboot. The stock image was in the root of the sd card.
When the phone does shut down it doesn't matter if take out the battery or do anything else, I can't get the phone to start back up until 20 mins later or so. The phone will certainly shut down if I use the camera or use youtube so if there is a way I can grab a log or something that could help let me know
I've had very similar issues, since installing a CM 10 alpha, and now on 10.1. The first couple weeks when I first rooted/flashed CM 10 were fine, but then it started rebooting one day, and never has stopped. Stock battery, no reboots prior to that, S-On, flashed the boot.img for each rom, and it's doing this with both CM 10 and CM 10.1. Does that also sound like battery, since it's the stock battery which has always worked fine? Also, it seems heat/intensity related - if I'm playing a game, using GPS, or talking a long time, that's when it tends to happen, and then it tends to happen right at/near the lock screen for a while after that until it's cooled down (perhaps that screams battery, but since it always restarts fine/has power I would have guessed it had to do with the processor or kernel). Thanks in advance for any advice!
Could be the battery...
I agree with the other posters. I had the experience of lots of random reboots a while back when I was working my way through sverhagen's 9.1r3+ ROMs. But, it just turned out that my stock battery had given up the ghost. Swapping to one of the gold batteries fixed the problem. I tried the stock battery in the interim for a brief stint and switched back to the gold, as the stock battery still caused random reboots. So maybe its time for a battery refresher

Yeah....the little suckers are on a power trip I think.
i've been having some shut down issues for a while, on different ROMs so I don't think it's that. whenever i'm using it i don't have any issues (unless it's a known ROM thing, that's separate). even during the day when i'm not using it, it hasn't shut down or anything. the issue is that a lot of times when i wake up, i find that the phone has been shut down. i charge it overnight. so, my best guess is that i should stop doing that, maybe the battery is bad, it can't handle that for that long?
idk any ideas would be helpful. i'm considering buying a gold battery anyway
Did you try the new Battery ?
I was have random shutdown and lockup problems. The phone would lock with a blank screen and I'd have to pull the battery to get it back.
Am running SilverL's CM 10.1. I might be a coincidence, but I backed off on the aggressiveness of the CPU settings (in the performance menu) and the problem went away.
I'm currently running a min/max = 128/1242.
I'm trying not to post a new thread so I'll post my very similar problem.
I got this phone about a year ago. I put Miktouch on it and was experiencing random shut downs all the time. I believe I posted on here and I can't remember the responses. As the mytouch q kinda sucks and I want a solid phone. I gave it another attempt this time with CM 9.1.0. When I used the camera once it shut down and restarted I think. Then I got a solid few days before it started going wanky again. Today alone I've had like 5 restarts. From what I've searched around it seems the problem here is the battery? This is stock battery and I got the phone used off ebay. I think I used stock rom like a week before rooting and putting Miktouch on it.
edit: For some odd reason my background also changed. Charged the phone backup. It turned off again.
If you've flashed any ROMs here to the MyTouch Q then that's your problem. It isn't this phone. These forums are for the HTC MyTouch 4G Slide. A much more powerful phone with a different manufacturer & motherboard. If you have S-Off go to their forums, wipe...wipe...wipe & reflash one of their ROMs. You're lucky you're not bricked.

I know. I'm talking about two different phones in the same post. I bought this phone (Mytouch 4g Slide) last summer but shortly started having problems. As I didn't want to deal with it I went back to my slowly dying touchscreen on my G2. When that finally died (touchscreen) I just bought a mytouch q as I wanted a phone that worked. This was my first new phone in a long time.
I am NOT trying to install any roms for the MyTouch Q on the MT4GS or the other way around.
S-OFF should be off on the 4G slide. Pretty sure my mytouch Q is still rooted though. It sucked at running CM 9
Sorry. Somehow I got confused. That being the case, it sure does sound like some type of a hardware issue instead of a software one.

Yeah, from what I read it could be a battery problem. Going to go with this Anker battery as its the only reliable battery I can find that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.
Anker Battery
Yeah I'd start with a new battery myself, either a new OEM or an anker, both are cheap on eBay. Also look for a post where me and weekends were discussing the emmc of this phone, bear in mind I have zero proof, but I got a suspicion there may be multiples they put in here and some worse than others.
If the battery won't work then I would repartition the whole dang thing, either by returning to stock and the rerooting and resoff, or by at least flashing the same bootloader on top of the one you currently have.
Just some ideas, but if you want a better idea of what's causing your issue, pull a logcat

I have a theory of whats causing it. If I extensively use the phone the battery warms up which gets to the point it shuts down. Thus if the battery is still too warm and I turn the phone on then it will just keep shutting down. Of course I can't do this until I'm home for the day as I'm out and about this weekend.
edit:
I used the Revolutionary way to turn s-off which is permanent.
I get random shut downs constantly. Usually atleast 3-4 times a day. It's pretty nerve racking. I honestly don't think it's the battery, I've experienced this issue on three different batteries and it happened on all of them. It's not ROM related either as I've tried probably 15 different ROMs (stock based, ICS, JB) and they all have this issue.
My buddy who has a Sensation also has this issue on his phone. Maybe it's a problem for that phone too since they are pretty similar?
