How to search google via your address bar by default on ie10 - Microsoft Surface

Google is Google for people like me... and Microsoft acting like the bully it is does not provide by default an option to search google.com... it has also made it quite difficult to add this addon and run it normally so here we go...
In short: extract and add attached entry to your registry editor by simply double clicking it and check "search from address bar" under search providers in the ie10 desktop versions addon menu
Long:
1. Download the attached reg file and extract its contents to your surface... double click to run it. Accept all warnings and it should add an entry to the registry editor.
2. Go to your metro style internet explorer and find a small tool icon beside the address bar (appears after a page has fully loaded), hit it and select "view on the desktop"
3. If your desktop version of internet explorer has opened, on the right top there will be a tool icon, select it and click "manage addons"
4. Go to "search providers" entry and select google. It will say "not available" etc but disregard it and look for a checkbox called "search in the address bar" - check it. + don't forget to select Bing and click the "remove" button that will appear on the bottom right of the window.
Click apply/close...
Now whenever on ie, Google will remain your light to the web!
Enjoy!

Microsoft acting like bully?
I'd rather stay away from the ad-shoving company that does not respect your privacy. Which is the whole purpose of making Chrome (no third party cookies have ever been blocked) unlike Safari (blocks all), FF (most), IE10 (most third party including default Do Not Track D.N.T header)
HOWEVER..
back on the topic, its always good to have choices.. depending on one's preference

i was able to add google as the default search on my RT no problem. just changed the default search provider in desktop IE and it applied to Metro IE as well. absolutely no need for registry edits.
settings --> add ons --> search providers --> add more search providers --> download google and set as default. easy as can be

Thanks bro... Really hate using bing...

cheers buddy

Or hell, just visit google.com and use their "add this search provider" link (plus click the "make this provider the default" box) and you're good.
Alternatively, open IE10 on the desktop, click the little down-arrow next to the search icon (magnifying glass) in the address bar, and select "Add" (alternate way to get to the same UI as described above).
This has been possible, with only minor UI changes, on all versions of IE since at least 7 (I have repressed all memory of using IE6).

Avoiding 'mobile' sites?

So I have been wondering, how do you avoid being forwarded to 'mobile' versions of websites on android OS? I am using a N1 and its quite annoying since the mobile versions usually have limited functionality.
sorry if this is in the wrong section or has been asked before, I couldnt find anything via google/etc, all search criteria just returns so much useless junk i couldnt sort through it all or narrow it down
The easy answer is to use Dolphin browser and set the use agent to desktop in the settings. The harder version from mobilecruch:
First up, open up your browser. Now, type “about:debug” (without the quotes, silly) and hit go. Click “Settings”, and scroll on down to the bottom to reveal the dastardly tricky “UAString”.
This is where the plan gets really cunning: you now change your user agent string — the bit of info that tells a website what type of device you are running — to “Desktop”.
u can change the setting thru ur stock browser. If it's not listed in settings of internet browser already which i assume it's not or u would've seen it, then type "about:config" in the address window and then hit "menu" hardkey and go to settings and it should show a debug section at the bottom that allows u to change the "UserString."

[Q] MobileMe or Similar? Anti-Theft Recovery Type Deal...

For my kids iPods, we have MobileMe which we use for locating it. Now with my new Transformer, is there something similar? Specifically, some sort of theft recovery program where I can log online and find out via GPS where the device is?
yeah i was wondering the same, as well as a security app. but i guess honeycomb is still Wifi only (mostly) and devs are more interested in an GSM/CDMA tablet compatible. plus, GPS by it self sucks, i tried to use for navigation, no luck

Dd you have it turned on. GPS on my TF works fine for navigation. Get GPS info app and look at the raw data. Remember it is a GPS (Satellite rcvr) and needs to have a relatively clear view of the sky.
Maybe not exactly what you're looking for....

Why not try Prey - preyproject dot com - it's free for the first 3 devices it's linked to with an account. It's also open source too and is multi-platform so it's more flexible (ie you can have it on your laptop as well). I use this on my Nexus One and will try it out on the Transformer once I get mine in the next few days.
I'd like to second the "Lookout" suggestion.
Not only can you locate your tablet...you can lock it down (or even wipe it clean) remotely...if you find it's gone.
It won't let me download/install Lookout onto the Transformer. Says "Your device is not compatible with this item". huh???
Ah... didn't see that (I only have it installed on my Galaxy S)! Sorry!
This sucks. PreyProject won't install on the Transformer either! Hmmmm...
see my next post...it's possible according to Lookout Support.
From the Lookout web support:
The reason why you're having trouble finding Lookout in the market for Honeycomb Tabs is due to the fact that the they don't support SMS messages.
We rely on SMS messages to initiate a connection to a device in the event it's lost, stolen, etc. Without the ability to receive SMS messages the missing device features would be greatly hindered, however, device based backups and malware protection would work normally.
Until we release a version that's more compatible with the Honeycomb tabs you can install it using this alternate method:
The first thing you'll want to do is enable the installation of non-market applications. To do this:
Go to settings > application > and check the box next to "Unknown Sources." Go ahead and disregard the warning (by clicking OK), we can uncheck it later.
Next, back out of Settings and open up the web browser.
In the address bar delete everything that's there and type this in (minus quotes): "m.getjar.com" and hit enter.
Now click on "Android" under "Or, Choose your platform." This will bring you to another page where you will see a search box in the upper right hand corner of the screen.
Tap the search box, to insert the cursor, and type "Lookout" and tap "go". The search will produce one result, which is "Lookout"
Tap on the link "Lookout Mobile Security with Antivirus".
You will now be on another page that displays a grey "Download" box. Go ahead and tap on it.
The Tablet will show that it's beginning to download the file and you'll see the progress, of the download, in the notification bar.
Tap on the download icon (it looks like a downward facing arrow pointing at a line) and a small window will populate above with the word "lookout-production-signed-aligned.apk" Go ahead and tap on that.
A window that says "Package Installer" pops up. From here you can read the permissions that Lookout requires. Go ahead and tap "Install".
Your installation will start. Tap "Open" once the installation has finished to open Lookout.
Finish setting up Lookout as you normally would!
Still doesn't let me download. It gets me to download and install the GetJar app but then just takes me back to the webpage.
Can someone just post the apk?
Thanks.
here you go
Thanks! Installed and working!
Edit - Maybe not. When I got to mylookout.com and try to locate the device, it asks for a mobile number. Since this is a WIFI device only, I entered in my cell number instead and it fails to locate it. But I guess this app is good for antivirus use.
Now back to the search....
Yes...they said until they get it fully understood for HC use...it would be hindered...
Okay, if the device is on, then it works. It'll scream and locate. But that's not really good if you've misplaced it and it's not activated. I hope they figure something out soon for HC.
It will also allow you go to go your account online and pick it out on a map via GPS.
I found this specifically for tablets and it works as needed.

thanks! that looks like the ticket..

bing search button changeable?

Does anyone have any idea of how to set the Bing button to refer to google search? I feel the Bing search engine is not that so efficiency =P
I don't think its possible although the default search engine in IE can be changed.
Well, a custom ROM could change it, certainly. I'm not sure about a stock ROM. It requires either changing the search program itself (which is baked into ROM) or changing the command that the OS runs when you hit the button (which *might* not be hard-coded and therefore could possibly be changed with a registry tweak, for example).
You need bing to access bing vision and local scout.
If you want google, go to m.google.com and it will ask you if you want a tile on your start screen. Put it where you'll always see it and then you have a button.
I used to love google but nowadays i find it's stupid ranked advertisement coming up as part of my search and throwing me to the wrong places annoying. That and bing seems to be more accurate. Back a few years i would have felt the opposite.

thanks for your comment, I think the 'key word' match searching system is different depend on regions & languages. and for now, i haven't suffered a lot from ads viewing google mobile.
I may prefer to use bing some time after. as said, every dog has its day.

AFAIR it was a registry hack
If your ROM comes pre-configured for something other than Bing for searching in IE, there's now an official setting to change it. If it comes pre-configured for Bing, that setting is hidden. In either case, it's just a registry change. See the registry tweak thread.

Well, I'm "pretty sure" you can do this: but legitimately speaking - you could probably write an app that would start a background task that would catch every button press for the search button and then open up IE to google.com. Loading Google.com would of course, not be as fast as the preloaded bing screen, but the search results might be more effective. But theortetically, I'm fairly certain that you can do this. Efficiently speaking, this is probably not a very viable option. For starters, you'd have to set a LONG hold time for that background task. Another problem would be that the background task might shut down randomly so you'd probably have to frequently check if it was on/turn it on.
But point being, in theory - yes, you can.
Hello! When i use the Search Button on my HTC Trophy, it open "Call History". But i need the Bing Search. Can i chance it to Bing?
My Phone is Full Unlocked with Version 7.10.8773.98.
It's a "feature" of the ROM. Sometimes it can be changed without flashing a new ROM, sometimes it can't. You really need to read the descriptions of ROMs closely before flashing them; full-unlock is far from the only change that people make.
do you know PWPD Tweaks? With that app you can change it maybe. You can find that app on Bazaar
hi you can use the SearchKey.xap... with this app you can change your search button to a searchpage that you like...
Hello! I found this:
"This is a tip on how to change searchkey
With registry editor navigate to key
[HKLM\Software\OEM\WebSearchOverride]
and change the value of
"ActionType"=3
to 6
This will set searchkey to Bing (default action)"
In my Registry it was 3 and i chance in 6. Restart my Phone and Bing works now.

Good News Microsoft enabling Flash by default

Good news everyone Microsoft is enabling Flash by default in Internet Explorer 10 starting March 12th part of the patch Tuesday updates
Link http://www.theverge.com/2013/3/11/4090878/microsoft-enabling-flash-by-default-windows-8-rt-march-12
no more hacks! \o/
Yay, now I can enjoy the internet just a little bit more!
Yeah, long overdue on their part.
For people who would still like to use Flash on a whitelist (there are definitely some of us), there are some options built into IE:
1. Use "ActiveX Filtering". It's under Tools -> Safety. It will put a little blue circle in the URL bar of a site with blocked ActiveX (not just Flash; any ActiveX) and you can click the circle to turn off the filter for that site.
2. Use the ActiveX plugin's own whitelist. Go to the Add-On Manager (Tools -> "Manage add-ons") and then double-click on "Shockwave Flash Object". Hit "Remove all sites" and then OK and exit the manager. Now, any site that requires Flash will pop up a Information Bar request for it (down at the bottom, like a file download request although without the attention-grabbing color shift) which you can approve or deny. Approving the site will add it to the whitelist in the add-on manager. This can be done on a per-plugin basis.
These methods can be combined, if you want. It's also possible to block the most common source of Flash (advertisements) using IE's built-in "Tracking Protection" feature combined with either a well-built homemade list, or using one of the official lists (EasyList, the same folks who maintain the AdBlock Pro list of that name, have one for IE). As with ActiveX Filtering, you can see when Tracking Protection is blocking something because the little blue cross-out circle appears, and you can turn it off for that site by clicking on the circle an approving the site.

Webpages on espn.go.com and cnet tv must use another plug-in unfortunately since I still get no video. So that sucks, but now you don't manually have to add a site one by one so I'm thankful for that.
Disable Flash
I'm already done with them stupid flash-banners and ads. I don't need flash in Modern UI IE10, any way I can disable it?

If you disable it in the Desktop IE, it will also be disabled in the Modern UI one. (Settings menu, "Manage Add-ons," right-click Shockwave, select "disable.")

ESPN and cnet apps will play the videos I want to view, but the apps are too sluggish for me vs the web.
Thank god... was that so hard Microsoft? Was it? Lol. I can delete the annoying shortcuts I made on the desktop to access that list. I've also noticed my browser has been running a little faster as well.

Surface RT - IE10 search results not displaying in address bar

Hi,
I have been going crazy trying to get search results to display in the address bar in the IE10 Modern UI on my Surface RT.
In the desktop mode this works as expected - as I type a search term in the address bar it gives me google suggestions, as well as results from within my favourites and recently visited sites. The add-on is configured to put search results in the address bar.
However, when using IE10 in Modern mode it only gives me search results for favourites and recently visited - it won't give me search suggestions.
Has anyone else had this problem?
I have tried uninstall/reinstall of IE, I have removed and re-added the add-ons (I've tried for both Bing and Google - neither work). I have also done a 'refresh my PC,' but to no avail.
Thanks for your help,
aeloen
I think it don't have search suggestions on Modern UI IE. If you want it that much maybe you need to set homepage to Bing or Google. And set "new tab page" to homepage too.
Do look into all the options under the Settings charm in Modern IE, just to be sure, I guess... but personally, I only use the desktop mode. The other is simply too crippled, feature-wise.

Okay, aeloen. Now I find a way to get "search suggestions" on IE10 Modern mode. If you want suggestions. You won't type in address bar. But you need to type in search box. By press search button on keyboard or Windows+Q. This way will get you search suggestions as you type.
Hope this help.
