[Q] Verizon cost to provide data? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I'm sorry if this is posted anywhere (I tried to find an existing thread with no luck) but does anyone know exactly how much it costs Verizon to provide each GB of 4g LTE data to our phones? I've read that it's cheaper per GB on the LTE network than it is on a 3g, but nobody has any numbers to back that up.
I am one of the lucky few that still has unlimited data, and I'm trying to use one TB of mobile data in a month just to stick it to them (set my phone to download 50gb of 1gb speed test files while I sleep).
If anyone can shed some light on the subject, I would be very appreciative! Exact figures or a link to a site with this information would earn my eternal gratitude! Thanks for reading

That's not what I'm asking at all. I'm asking how much it costs them to PROVIDE data, not how much it costs you to buy data from them.
Thanks for reading though, sorry if I was unclear

Very little. The architecture as a whole is extremely expensive to build and maintain, but once it is there (which of course they must have for all the other customers) any one customers data is trivial in terms of cost regardless of how much data you use.

About 5 dollars a gigabyte, with costs falling quickly.

Not a chance, $5 per gigabyte would be impossible to make cost effective even if all unlimited plans were gone.

What are you talking about? They're charging 30 dollars for 2 gigs, (or 4 if you got in on that plan), which means they're either making 10 or 20 dollars profit.

The op wants to know how much it costs VERIZON to provide us with the data. Not how much we pay. He basically wants to know the profit margin.

thanks for the help guys. It's a hard question to word and an easy question to misunderstand if you skim through it

I had a talk with the VP of corporate finance for Verizon Wireless recently, and he didn't give me an over-the-wire cost for transferring data but he did say that the tech wasn't there to deliver truly unlimited (unthrottled) to every customer, and it was cost prohibitive to keep on doing so, hence the change to share everything and elimination of unlimited as an option.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app

The data is most likely imported from China or Taiwan so I would say between .01-.03 cents (US) per GB and resold to us at the range between $7-25 per GB.

If there are literally zero other costs involved in running the service, then yes your numbers are correct. But your numbers, if $5 per gig is true, is considered revenue. Many other variable and fixed costs lower the profit (unless $5 per gig factors in all other costs) Although my response here kinda ignores the original posters question. I had been under the assumption that broadband providers, including cell companies, pay a fee per gig to the companies at the beginning of the pipeline providing the internet bandwidth to them, but maybe I should assume verizon, since they own a large portion of the 700mhz specturm, would actually be the beginning of the Verizon Wireless 4g pipeline. There's something I think I am misinformed about regarding wholesale bandwidth differences between landline broadband and wireless broadband.

Upgrading through amazon

i'm on the grandfathered unlimited data plan and was trying to upgrade through amazon but there's no way to get through checkout without choosing one of the new tiered data plans. has anyone been able to get around this or know of a way to get with the amazon price without changing data plans?
Ha , that is funny. I considered using amazon but couldn't wait for my infuse. If that is the case why not just check out get it and drop the tether . Shouldn't be no biggy. Anyways , this infuse is sexy.you'll love it !
Samsung infuse 4G
Amazon charged me a $250 Etf on top of At&'s Etf when I had to sell my Captivate and cancel my contract last year. So my Captivate cost me around $700 when it was all said and done. I'll never buy from Amazon again.

Personally, I wouldn't take a chance on losing it. I'd just go to a retail store to purchase it just to be safe. Having said that, if you just switch your SIM card from your existing device and do not activate the SIM card Amazon sends you, that MAY keep you on your existing data plan. This worked for me when upgrading my wife's phone from Best Buy online.

Yeah, it says that right on their site if you cancel within the first 6 mos. This is pretty common practice for most resellers.
All you have todoiscall art after you petit and tell them you grandfather in and they will change it. I've done this with Wal-Mart before.

Do you feel better about yourself now? I'll never understand the need some people have to try and prove themselves superior to others by cutting in and making statements like yours. I know it is on the site but I had lost my job and had a family to feed. I paid the fees later and settled up with At&t also. But if it makes you feel better....yes I'm just an idiot who never read my contract and has no reason to complain about paying $150 more than what the device was worth.

I agree with this 100%.
I wouldn't risk losing your G-pa data plan by buying from amazon and then calling AT&T to switch back. Big gamble to save $50 up front but lose hundreds of dollars in monthly data charges.
Also, I *heard* that AT&T is selling the phone on-contract for $149 (same as amazon) if you buy an accessory. But even if that's not the case (no pun intended), I personally wouldn't risk it.
Call ATT and tell them about it. They should be able to fix it back to the unlimited plan. Believe or not they are pretty good about that.

This is true but avoid doing anything that has to do with your plan and features on the web. Its a headache and they won't care about what fees come on your bill. Example: upgrade fee, activation fee. I see it everyday as i do the same work in a store.

Dont do that. I work for at&t and that's a gamble not worth taking. Re adding a unlimited data plan is extremely time consuming as well as job threatening if re added for trivial reasons such as so a customer can save 50 dollars by purchasing from an indirect retailer. Is 50 dollars worth potentially losing unlimited data? Probably not

Are you telling me that if i call ATT and explain that i could not choose the plan when i order the new phone but i want it fix once i receive my phone they wont help me?
You do know they can see all changes made to your plan. I am sure if you call them the same day you get your phone (a couple of days from the change) and explain the situation they will help you.
Worse thing, send the phone back to amazon and tell them to put your account back to how it was before. Go to a local place and get it there.

Woah man, I wasn't trying to put you down in any way. Sorry if you took it like that. You seemed pretty upset with Amazon for charging you the extra fee, and I was just pointing that they're not the only ones who do that. It's pretty standard practice unless you buy directly from AT&T, and I feel Amazon is more up front about it than most. That's why I was saying it's right on their site compared to a lot of places where you'll find it buried in the fine print. Again, didn't mean anything personal by it.

Double Your Data Allowance!

Anyone on capped data may be interested to know that starting tomorrow you can double your data allowance for no extra cost through the month of November.

on a side note, when I called Verizon about upgrading my phone, they insisted on doing it over the phone & stated that for exsisting customers you have to do it that way. however, I called a local Verizon store yesterday and they said I can just go into the store and do it.

Unless the sales person over the phone is offering you something special or exclusive, there is no reason why you can't go into any Verzion Wireless dealer and do an upgrade.

OP says once you get it, you get it for the contract but if you can't find a definitive response, who knows.
In all the promo material Verizon it states that you will keep it until you opt into something, no longer how long you keep it. However if you switch to a 3G phone you will lose it, and will be unable to get it back.
Verizon has confirmed that this will be grandfathered once you get it.

LOL ..... well we havent seen a pricing structure yet maybe rediculously priced.
Anxiously waiting for some of those details to leak
In one sense, it does make some sense for the company. Lots of people are getting both tablets and phones. If they can share a data plan between them, it might spur sales of a tablet. I know a lot of people who would not get a second device because they don't want that second data plan. I was one of those that didn't want the second data plan. So I got a wifi-only tablet and tethering on my phone. But, from an ATT perspective, they might come out ahead if they used their fast LTE for the small screens of phones and let folks use the older Edge and 3G for their tablets at a decreased price because it spreads their data load.
I work for Att, and I know its going to half and half. Good cuz now you can have one set price bad cuz you need to think about what if lil Johnny uses up all my data... What do I do, oh I know get hit with overcharge... Att is about to make bank. Wait. And see.gghf

Verizon announced shared data beginning June 28th, AT&T will probably follow suit shortly.
verizon_share_everything_plan_details.pdf
Compared VZW's plans with my current AT&T plan (FT w/ 3 devices) and it's within about $5 of what I'm paying now.
+ is tethering on all devices without paying for the top tier.
- is overages are $15 / GB.
Verizon's new share everything plan is everything I was afraid of. Instead if choice they force the customers hand into buying a service they don't want. I'm on AT&T and I look forward to see what they offer, but if it is similar I won't be saving money, I'll be paying more while getting less data, more minutes than I use and more texts than I need. This is the perfect plan for the top tier users but for the average joe this is a slap in the face.
Saw this on Verizon's shared data plans:
http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/12/verizon-share-everything-data-plans-go-live-june-28/
If I'm reading that right, you pay a base of $50 for the lowest tier, plus $40 per smartphone. That seems to me to be more than I'm paying now for a total of 4GB on 2 phones plus a dumb phone ($70 base + $80 for smartphones + $30 for the dumb phone = $180 + tax). Maybe not a lot more, but more nonetheless.
If there is a similar price point for the AT&T plans, I may consider it based on whatever my average data is, but that remains to be seen. I'm guessing with Verizon's announcement that we'll see something soon.

I have something similar on att, base plan at $80, with two smart phones at unlimited data and texts and 1200 minutes to share, the base plan has a dumb phone with unlimited data and texts as well
So 80+9+9+30+30, and don't forget about rolling over unsed minutes.

I'm certain AT&T will do something similar. That's how they have things setup for texting now, either pay $20/month for unlimited or $.20/message and get 100 messages for the same $20, nothing in between like $10 for 500 messages, etc.
The statement that VZW is making is that minutes and texts no longer matter, they are commodity features now. The cash cow is data, which is why they bumped their data overage from $10/GB to $15/GB.
I would probably switch to a shared plan, currently have 3 phones with 3GB, 3GB, and 4GB+tether and it would be nice for me to be able to use the balance of the 2 3GB plans in a month that I do a lot of tethering.

Another reason why USA is slowly but steadily falling behind other developed countries. What ATT and VZW just did was overpaid for spectrum knowing that there is no true competition and they can charge whatever they want. Now they will have customers pay by the teeth for data.
The end game is that everyone else but the cellular provider loses. Customers pay more so they will buy less cellular equipment and use less. I for one will let go my personal cell phone and use company phone only. Fewer people will buy data enabled tablets. This impacts a whole slew of downstream app develops providers etc as well.
A family data share option would be great if they do it like their other plans.. offer several different size family packages like ex.
1. 2gb family
2. 3 gb family
3. 4 gb family
4. 5 gb family and so on until
5. Unlimited. And be truley unlimited family...
And if you should so choose option 1-4 let the unused balance roll over to the next month. If a company would offer this, data plans taylored to the customers needs and wants. Why have these big companies like att got away from giving their customers what they actually want and giving them what they pay for..

AT&T announces Mobile Share: www.att.com/mobileshare
Surprisingly similar to VZW's offering.
I wonder how AT&T is going to handle discounts with the new plans. Previously only certain thing were discounted with my corp premier discount. Either way, this looks a bit more expensive for my situation.
I have 4 lines. One smart phone (unlimited data(don't really use more then 5 gigs)) and 3 dumb phones (2 of which don't have data). For the same price I'm paying now I could have data on all my lines with unlimited talk (already have unlimited txt). I'll be looking into it for sure. Just cause they offer it doesn't mean its for you or you need it or that they are "forcing" it on you.

The Gazelle store on ebay has some nice, gently used phones. It's probably where I'll be getting my next phone from.

Yeah, I thought everyone knew this.
To keep unlimited, never use your upgrade, ever.
That said, I think VZW will probably end unlimited completely in the near future.

+1 - No everyone knew, My TBolt still on contract till December 1 however I can able keep my unlimited account by buying full retail price of Samsung GSIII and No ETF fee at all! I can't complain!
I did ask one of my buddy who work for Verizon and he said that they will not end unlimited (grandfathered) completely unless you volunteer upgrade eligible or upgrade smartphone replace the current grandfathered phone.

Yeah I was looking the other day at phones and just had to ask also. No go for the unlimited on new phone unless you pay full price.
But I knew the answer before I even went in.
I actually went to Verizon yesterday and talked to a guy about the plans.
Yes, Verizon will no longer have unlimited data available to anyone... no matter if you're "grandfathered" in.
However, check your monthly data usage... you might be surprised at how little of data you actually do use each month.
Turns out that when it comes time for me to change my plan, I'll be saving more money from month to month.
This does vary from person to person, though. It's definitely worth looking at.
You can also keep your unlimited data by not renewing your contract and buying a phone from offline somewhere or at full price from Verizon. Just call Verizon and tell them you need to make an ESN swap to active your new phone.

so, you're saying that ALL unlimited plans will be axed in the future? i've done my own research, and don't want to debate at all either way, but am unsure what you meant in your post.
I heard that u can keep your unlimited but just like he said u will have to pay full price for your phone if u wanna keep it that is what I was told by a vzw rep. I personally burn about 13-14 GB a month so I do not wanna lose my unlimited lol

that's what i was told by several VZW reps. as well. when i called and spoke to a phone rep., she told me that VZW would never force paying unlimited customers (grandfathered) onto any other plans to continue service. how accurate that is, only time will tell.

They won't get rid of it if you currently have the unlimited data plan unless you renew or sign a contract. Unlimited data is no longer an option with the service plan.
As long as you keep the Verizon service and do not sign into another contract, unlimited data will be with you.
If you want to upgrade to another phone, you'll have to buy it off of the internet from someone or walk into Verizon and pay full price for the phone only... without starting a new contract or plan.
This is the only way you can avoid losing unlimited data.

You will not be able to change from one phone to another online anymore either.
If you do, it will tell you that changing to this device requires a change to your plan.
If you want to change from the Thunderbolt to... let's say a Galaxy S3, you'll have to call Verizon and talk to a customer service rep. and they will have to change it for you. Just tell them you need to make an ESN swap from the Thunderbolt to the Galaxy S3 and they will have no problem what so ever in changing it over for you without making any changes to your "plan"... even if you don't technically have one and they will not force you into a contract either. *At least not yet* and let's hope it stays that way.
Verizon will not turn down paying customers.

Chance to get out of your Sprint contract without ETF.

I searched but couldn't find a similar thread.
On my March bill in the Important Information section it says that they are changing the way they calculate taxes and surcharges on premium content:
Tax & Surcharge Base Changes Effective 4/1/13, Sprint will be changing tax systems for charges such as insurance & premium content. This update may cause an increase of taxes and/or surcharges on your bill for these products. For details of taxes & surcharges, visit sprint.com/taxesandfees.
There is a slickdeals post talking about it.
It hasn't shown up on my bill yet, but may on the next bill. The URL they refer you to hasn't been updated since November, so you can't determine if your rates are going up.
Taxes going up isn't a reason/way to cancel, but if they increase the premium service fees in any way then you can cancel without the ETF.
It's worth looking into if you want to drop Sprint for another provider (or just get out of contract to get a new phone).

Why would i do that, sprint is the best coverage in my area.
Wouldn't this be a material change of contract only if you subscribe to premium services?

Correct, which is why you could cancel your contract ETF free.
The question is, what is considered premium content. Is the $10 charge for more a smartphone considered premium?
Also, this may only be regional.I know people in California have been able to cancel already without the ETF.

The phone itself doesn't determine premium or not. Premium features may be items like damage protection, international calling, etc. It almost definitely has nothing to do with what phone you have. It's premium service features.
They don't charge an additional fee for LTE service. They do however charge a fee for Smartphone data service (since smartphones use more data than a traditional cell phone). That may be considered a premium service. If it is, then every Evo 4G LTE owner has an "out" on their contract.

Thanks for sharing. I've been looking for a way out of my contact. Sprint service here gets worse by the day. Most times I get about 10kb download on 3G. And that's when my data isn't disconnecting constantly.

If there is a way out of the contract then I'm definitely taking advantage of that and buying a new phone. HTC One or the Galaxy S4. Most likely the S4 since I'm getting sick of HTC. Good lookin' out. Hopefully this will work out.

For those talking about the charge on the OG EVO, it wasn't a 4G charge. Ugh. I feel like I'm repeating myself because people don't pay attention and don't care to understand. The $10 charge that Sprint started with the first EVO is a $10 data surcharge for all smartphones because they CAN use more data than a dumb-phone. It has nothing to do with LTE or 4G. It was an excuse Sprint used to increase their data fees while still giving unlimited data.

As for the person mocking me regarding the .36 cent increase and switching to Verizon and paying more. Look, I didn't say you had to switch carriers, it just lets you out of your contract. So cancel and restart under a different name or something, you can get a new phone for the subsidized price. I myself am sick of the crappy service and promise of LTE in my area that never came (was supposed to be second half of last year). Even with my free AirRave, service still sucks.
I too get an employee discount, but I also get a discount with all the other carriers. The ONLY benefit I have with Sprint is the unlimited data. Verizon and AT&T would only cost me $5 more per month with better service, and 4GB of data (we haven't gone over 3GB in the last 4 years).
So, feel free to be an ass and mock me,I don't care. I'm trying to help those who DO want a new phone for $200 instead of $500, or who do want to jump carriers (and get a new phone). To those select few, your welcome and good luck!
I've been following the Slick Deals thread as well as this one also here on XDA. I've already tried calling to see if they know what my personal change will be and, of course, the rep had no idea (she actually didn't even know about the statement on the bill in the first place). My bill comes out on the 10th of each month so I have to wait until then to see the changes and start my full attack.
