Guys, been hanging out here long time now. First incident with about 6 month old captivate. I dropped a glass of water on my captivate yesterday. I immediately removed and took out the battery and wiped it dry. Did not see much of seeped in water so did not do the rice method. Turned on Wi-fi this morning and it says "unable to start wifi". Same with bluetooth.
Call,sms, camera everything works fine. At work, so blew dry the phone and also have kept it next to a warm laptop exhaust. Should I dismantle the phone and try to dry the swb23 chip (wifi/bt) ?
Please help guys !

You can't see the water that got inside. Would have been better to do the rice method before switching it back on but you should do it now nonetheless. Just be warned, you may have cooked the WiFi chip already.
Are the moisture indicators clear? If so, you should send it for warranty replacement. If not, then you can resort to opening it up, wiping the traces, etc.

uggg...may be too late. If you get a significant amount of liquid on or in your phone the worst thing you can do is turn it on.
You should have:
1. immediately removed battery and placed on a paper towel.
2. immediately place phone in a bag of rice for a minimum 24 hours if not 48 before ever powering back on.
Still its worth a try....remove battery and leave in rice for 24 hours....try again....maybe it didn't fry anything when you powered it on...but you definitely need to finish getting the moisture out of the inside via the rice absorption.
I had my old tilt in a pocket submerged in a swimming pool for a good 15 minutes before realizing my blunder. When i realizing it i didn't try to turn it back on. Left it in rice for 48 hours and everything work fine (luckily the phone was powered of when i got in the pool so that probably helped avoid anything frying).
Haha, I once accidently dropped my old Samsung Epix in a bucket of water and it still booted up and worked but most of the features are dead but screen and all still works. It looked like it was wrecked. I got it replaced under my insurance which is a good thing.

but being aware that you shouldn't turn on an electronic device when it is wet hardly requires hindsight though does it? =)
Thanks guys, I have put my phone in a bowl of rice hoping it will get cured.
If not, will ATT not service my phone under warranty ? I read somewhere that replacing the wifi/bt chip costs $70 with ATT. Has anyone done this here ?

How do I check for the moisture indicator ? Any easy steps ?
It is the white (or not so white anymore) square in the battery compartment.

i know i thought it as funny haven't seen that episode in a long time...almost as good as towlie
i am just always surprised to see the posts where someone gets there phone wet (washed in laundry, dropped in toilet, spilled significant amount of liquid on it) and the first thing they did was tried to turn it back on almost immediately.
btw if your looking at the moisture indicators for warranty purposes its quite possible you have to completely open the shell. Usually they have one visible without taking the phone apart but its not uncommon to have a secondary marker inside the phone where it would be harder for someone to tamper with. Can anyone confirm where all the cappys markers are?
Been a while since I had mine apart but I don't recall seeing one inside.

wasn't sure....my Tilt2 had one in the battery compartment and one on the motherboard that could only be seen by opening the casing
Hi guys, my phone dropped into the wash basin under running water. I immediately took everything apart and put the phone into a rice bag. after a few hours i tried on'ing it.
It shows the HTC Logo, but then it blanks out after that. I havent used my warranty so I think there still is warranty? Do you think they will fix my phone for me? Because its rooted with Android HD. Thank you.

You should have waited longer. Your reaction with the rice was perfect, but let it sit there for 24h or so! I screwed my previous phone this way.
So let it dry longer, try again. Everytime you're turning on your device, you're possibly damaging it.
Okay, Hopefully I havent damaged it fully. I saw a slight sign after i hair dryed it and the screen flashed again. Now I'm gonna put it in rice and leave it overnight. tomorrow morning if it doesnt work, Im gonna bring it to the shop. Hopefully no cost needed to repair this phone >< Im just a kid an i dont got money to spare haha. thanks guys, let u know the results soon
Are you serious? You dropped it in water, so you have no warranty. If you remove the battery you'll see a little sticker that is now pink, it used to be white. That's how they know it has been in water and there are indicators inside the phone too. Water damage voids all warranties. You'll be paying for this one.

A missing indicator is usually looked at the same way as a tripped indicator, but, like i said before, there are other indicators hidden inside the phone as well, so they will be able to tell for sure that it has taken a dip.
Ah ic , oh well, doesnt hurt to try . I guess it would be better to spend some money on fixing it then spending extra and getting a new one
Well I'm guessing repairs would be around $100-150 USD depending on what needs replacing, so still cheaper than a new one in most cases, but not all. Never heard of repairs being less than $100.
As for the white indicators turning pink/red you can play that off as condensation from your pocket. For ex "i work in the heat and im guessing the condensation must have turned the indicators pink. You can always fool and or deny on insurance claims. Tmobile tried to call me out on a vibrant 4g that had water damage and i told them some BS and they tried to fight it. I was directed to cancel my contract and next thing i knew they removed the charge on my account. Just play dummy and if they dont bite throw a fit. Works everytime.

Didn't go to htc service center yet. Today I woke up and it started working again, just that theres water under the screen. Immediately off it again and let it stay in the rice packet. Going overseas tomorrow, maybe tomorrow i'll check again. If theres still water I'm just gonna leave it there for two weeks while i'm away. I don't wanna be impatient and get it short circuited or anything.

There is most definately a moisture notification thing. They can see that and know it got wet.. Not sure what provider you have but mine will replace if device gets wet.. TMOUS (if you have the insurance)
Guys, my phone's LCD is somewhat has water in it or underneath it, other then that, when start up, it doesnt show the HTC Logo part. Any idea how to remove the water? I put it inside the rice for around 2days straight now, still not going away

I wish I wasn't here under these circumstances, but yesterday my phone got drenched by the faucet when I accidentally dropped it in the sink. I turned it off right away and tried to dry it by blowing out all the holes/buttons/etc. with canned air. then (maybe stupidly) I turned the phone back on and used it the rest of the day, not really noticing that it wasn't charging when I plugged it in until later when the battery got very low and I plugged it in again and noticed that the charging symbol didn't appear.
Ultimately, what I found DID work, (at least temporarily, sometimes it still stops charging) was turning the phone off, then plugging it in, then turning it back on . When I did this, usb (and wireless) charging work, as well as the USB connection for getting files off the phone on my computer.
It's a bit odd that this is what worked, but so far, it seems to. I'm just not quite sure if there's anything else I can do other than maybe send the phone to LG for repair, or find a local shop that might be cheaper...
Just looking for any suggestions or information anyone may have to help me fix this. thanks in advance!

You should have not used the phone but put it turned off in a bowl of uncooked rice for a few days. Optional also removed the back and the battery if possible. You will have corrossion now and maybe worse electrical damage.

Yeah, I recognize that it was a bad idea... but there's not much I can do about that now. I'm just trying to figure out what my best course of action going forward is.

Try to remove the back and battery and place it in a bowl of uncooked rice asap for 2-3 days, this will limit the damage. Your warranty will also be voided i`am afraid as the moisture indicators are colored now.

what do you think the chances of the moisture indicators NOT being colored would be?
I had the phone inside a bumper case which covers the sides of the phone and the back. Some water got inside the case, but maybe not enough to wet the indicators.. I'd hate to open the phone and then realize they weren't colored. I hate opening phones if possible, but that'd be the only way to know for sure , I guess...
I'm working on getting my hands on a back up phone to use currently , but I hate to see the condition of this one get worse... (my nexus 4 that I was going to use as a backup hasn't wanted to power on in a couple months after I botched Rom flashing attempt and subsequent failure to accept a charge)

Water goes through the tiniest cracks and openings so i guess the indicators are colored. Only one sure way to find out and that is looking inside the phone. Look on YouTube for a Nexus 5 iFixit dissasembly video.
Opening up the phone doesn't really void the warranty. Breaking something while opening it does. You still had the headphone jack and the usb port open right? That means water got in and tripped the sensors. This is pretty much guaranteed. IMO, those sensors are too sensitive. Just using the phone in a humid place (bathroom while shower is running) trips them.
If everything works fine just try a wireless charger

The fact that your charging doesn't work reliably anymore probably means the moisture indicators would be coloured... I've had phones where the water didn't damage it at all and they still were

so i went swimming with my phone for about 2 minutes yesterday before realising i had it on me. let it dry in the sun then rice bag over night. now this morning i let it charge and it booted up fine. but it started restarting. and at some point got stuck in a bootloop. i can get to the "power + volume down button" but i can not get into my recovery, any ideas?

You shouldn't even try to power it on...now pray. And go as fast as you can to the closest repair center and tell them what happened. Phone has to be opened and cleaned/dryed properly. You can't do that by yourself, or it is difficult to do it even with the tutorials on how to break it apart. All components should be cleaned with isopropyl alcohol and blown dry. Turn it off immediately and go with it to a service center...really
Every second while the phone is charging/powered, increase the chances to end up with a hardware brick. And the repair costs will be higher than buying a new one

ah wow a reply from a fellow romanian, salut! also theres no point in repairing this phone, the pixels are getting burned, the battery lifes getting shorter, but i would not want to have to buy a new one. that being said, the phone did work for a bit, i wanted to understand why it started not working?

Because water is doing damage in time not instantly. The water, especially from pools or even worse sea/ocean, contain minerals, salts and chemicals that remain on the circuits after water has evaporated. They have a corrosive action on contacts and electronic components and posess a high risk of short-circuit that's not immediately observed, making a device totally unusable. The biggest initial risk is to fry a component due to a short-circuit, that's why is recommended to power off and take out the battery from such devices but that's not all. Unfortunately taking out the battery from the One S is not possible as with other phones so parts of the phone/board still remain powered even if you turn it off. Now as time passes by, water and it's components are doing a slow damage unless phone it's not properly cleaned inside. That's why I told you about isopropyl alcohol. Trust me, if your phone still works is a miracle and you still don't know if parts of it are not ireversibile damaged. Any time using it further like this will increase the chances to have it permanently bricked.

aha i see what you mean. i got a bit impatient, turned it off, and drowned it in isopropyl for about 15 mins. now im waiting for it to dry out again as i can see the isopropyl inside my camera. also another thing, ever sinc ethe bootloop, if i plug it in and its turned off, it will automatically turn on after like 10 seconds or so.

Oh no. I told you to go with it at a service center not to submerge it yourself in alcohol. That's not how it should be cleaned. It should be opened and components wiped with alcohol not drowned in it. And surely not when the battery is still connected.
Reboot to bootloader (if you still can) and you have there option to power off. It won't start up again. Leave it like this till you go to a service center, DON'T try to do something yourself again

yeah but the phone isnt even worth double what i would pay for at a service center, especially since the screen has alot of burned pixels, especially on the top, thats why im trying to do it myself

Ok. Then search on youtube or here on XDA, was posted a video how to disassemble the One S. After you take it apart, disconnect the battery and wipe it with cotton balls and alcohol. Especially the contacts and circuit. Dont rub it hard, just clean it gentle... And don't drawn it again in alcohol. Let it dry completely after that. It might be that camera has been permanently damaged if you seen liquid IN it. Also the screen is very sensible if water or any other liquid gets between it's layers. And you should be very careful with every contact...and light up a candle for it will you, maybe it'll help
Such operation at a service center should cost you less than 100 RON, you should make some calls and ask

yeah ive seen it, and will definetly try it if i dont see it working after this dry off, only think im worried abut is not having the star headed screw driver for some of the screws, but i guess you can try to use other types of screwdrivers. also i am in canada but yeah it would be about 50$ which is 100 ron. thank you for all the advice and have a good night!

man, if i tell you, youre not gonna believe me, but after drowning it in iso and letting it dry in the sun, it works just fine now and the commands that i gave it from the boot menu , which were to erase data and factory reset did not work, i thought they did, but i guess it makes sense because as soon as i pressed them the bootloop would start again. also the initial time when i tried my phone this morning it seemed like it was charging a bit too fat (the percentage), which it doesnt seem to be doing now, and im glad, cause i think that means that whatever problem its had is gone, or so i hope lol.

Accidentally dropped my phone in water for about 2 to 3 second... 1st i thought its okay. Just wiped the water and it was running well for 2 minutes..
But after that its repeatedly restarting itself...
I even tried to dry it. Also i opened the device and seperated all the components inside. Still the problem is same... Only thing i didn't seperated is the screen which is more risky... So anyone can tell me what are tge possible ways i can fix it..

Software measures like flashing custom ROMs/Recovery doesn't seem a way out. The nature of damage done to the hardware within is worth a check by an expert. Firstly, post dropping a cell in water, it should never be used, instead it be switched off and battery be removed (if at all it is a removable one) until you ensure there are no water traces within. If you are not good at doing all this by yourself, better take it to the nearest service center. Having said that you have already attempted to flash Custom OS/Recovery, the warranty of device is already void. So leave the *risky* aspects you mentioned to the hardware experts who shall give ya an estimate and the status too.

I know m out of warranty. And even it was in warranty company will take the same amount as of now.. bcz its water damaged which is not covered in warranty. So my situation is same from both sides. Still i want to solve this by my own.. if i did i will make sure to let all the community know. It will help others as of my situation...

Usually in such a situation the phone is kept in rice to absorb all the moisture, try that.
If it still persists take it to the service centre and get an estimate before fixing it, they are known to state a lot of random charges when they find out you dropped it in water.

Actually already solved the problem. And yes it was due to short circuit bcz of water happening into the wire connected to screen. Just swiped it through Cotton and everything was good just like before..
And rit now its rocking again cheers

Woah that's cool
Some time ago i also accidently droped rn7p in water at night 11 pm about 2-3 seconds. But i imedeatly turned it off and clean using a dry cloth then leave it under fan to dry. In monring i go to a local mobile repair shop and he just heat the mobile on a heating plate about 5 mins. Then i start it, and there is no problem it working like previous. So never remain phone on after drawing off it as soon as possible.

It wasn't tough though as i did it without any tools.. or u can say home tools.
Only took the help of youtube just to make sure i don't do something wrong
