If I have a backup on the internal sd card, when wipe data before flashing a rom, will that delete my nandroid backups? Don't know if I should backup my roms to internal storage or external.
Wipe data won't delete your nandroids on the internal but Odin a stock ROM and you will loose them... all of them.
I now backup on a weekly basis and transfer what need to extSD when I'm thinking of doing something potentially dumb.

okay cool thanks. Just wanted to make sure it doesn't delete after wiping data.

LOL at "potentially dumb".
Couldn't have put it any better myself. I use the same procedure, I make a weekly nandroid to the internal storage & then copy the backups to both my 64gig card & also to my PC occasionally.
I can't make a nandroid directly to my 64 gig card as I won't format it to FAT32 because of some of the restrictions of FAT32.

Not true...IF you wipe data/factory reset from stock recovery, it reformats the whole internal sd card(everything is wiped). Now if you wipe data from cwm recovery, then no nandroids are not deleted. Also odin does not wipe internal sd either...again you have to boot into stock recovery and wipe data/factory reset to reformat internal sd. I still always back my nandroids up to external sd, just incase my internal ever corrupts, I wont lose them!

Ahh yeah, that makes sense. That's how it was on my nexus with being just internal storage and nandroids never were deleted. Thanks for the clarification.

There's something in Odin that wipes it because when I used it to go back to stock it wiped mine...
Either way though, backup your nandroids to your ext card... saves you all the hassle lol

I can see the stock recovery wiping it but since the OP used the term nandroid I assumed CWM. Good to know the stock wipes it clean if there is ever a time I have to send it back.
I had an issue back before we were unlocked and when I ODINed back to stock all the internal SD was wiped. Wasn't too pleased but my fault for not backing up.
Sidenote about backing up. I tend to backup the entire internal and external SD every Sunday. The app I use for backup doesn't see the S3 as a media device so I can't use it to make incremental backups. Is there any program that would do that? I use karens replicator for backup btw. That's the one that doesn't work.

Hi guys, I've been flashing my new Galaxy S3 lately and have started to migrate my music library onto my internal 32GB. It's a healthy 15GB of music.
I run SynergyROM r66, and would like to load up r71 fairly soon, bu would not like to lose my music, as it is a pain to resync for me.
How do I do so without it reformatting my internal memory? I'm sticking with Synergy so I don't think I need to do a "clean wipe" right?
Is it as simple as Wipe Cache/Wipe Dalvik, then Install from SD, then reboot? No factory reset?
Any help is appreciated, thank you.

data wipe/ factory reset from stock recovery formats internal memory. data/wipe factory reset from Cwm recovery only wipes system data and does not reformat internal sd, unless you manually do it thru mounts/storage menu in cwm...although you should be fine with just a cache wipe going to r71.

I always wipe dalvik cache to be safe.

The Dalvik virtual machine deals with your apps. Whenever changing apps it's a good idea to clear it's cache so you don't have cached data for a different version of an app - this could confuse the machine and lead to problems.

Wiping through cwm recovery in recovery (not the app itself) will not wipe your media or pictures or downloaded files etc. Your Music will be intact, but something not mentioned here yet, do you have an external sd card? Always a good idea to put that important stuff on it,or at least copies of it to be safe, including titanium backups. Though cwm won't wipe your media, if something goes wrong and you have to do a stock recovery, you may forget that cwm is NO LONGER there, and accidentally wipe your media like I did once bricking my galaxy player 5.0!

i have bean looking for information about back up and wipe for oneplus one for hours now but i failed to get the answers that i need.
so my questions are:
What is th best way to back up everyrhing on my phone when i am flashing a new room, and by everything i mean apps and their data, pics , music, sms , call logs......etc
My second question, what are the different types of wipe do and what do i need to wipe when flashing a new rom and will it erase everything on my phone ncluding pics and music? and what is exactly considered as internal storage and what does it erase.

The best way to backup your apps is by using Titanium Backup. It'll backup all of your apps and their data, you need the pro version to backup call logs and messages but it's well worth it because the pro version also allows batch restore (without batch restore you need to individually press ok for each app that you're restoring). Titanium is by far the most important root app that's available. You don't need to backup your personal data (music, photos) on your internal storage because you don't wipe the internal storage when flashing a ROM.
When flashing a new ROM you need to perform what's called a full wipe, this is wiping system, data, cache, and dalvik cache. Using TWRP recovery (the best recovery) you enter the wipe menu from the main menu, then select advanced wipe, and then you can select the previously mentioned partitions to wipe. This does not wipe your internal storage (the user-accessible virtual sd card where all of your personal data resides), wiping the internal storage is never necessary when flashing a ROM.
If you're just updating the same ROM (flashing a newer version/build) you don't need to worry about wiping, you can just flash the zip and reboot. Only ever do this when updating the ROM you're currently using though, never when flashing a different ROM.

Nope. But if you do a complete wipe you'll lose everything that's on the internal SD.
No, a full wipe is wiping system, data, cache, and dalvik cache. Your internal storage isn't touched unless you specifically wipe it as well.

But I want to wipe my internal storage because there's a lot of things I don't need.
I want to clean my device from folders my phone never uses.

Are you worried about losing a TWRP backup or the actual recovery? If you wipe internal storage you'll lose everything that's on it, including any TWRP backup. But, no matter what you wipe inrecovery you'll never erase TWRP.

Week of course system files will be deleted if you do a full wipe, because a full wipe entails wiping the system partition. Exactly what are you trying to do? Are you flashing a new ROM?

No just clean up my phone by only wiping my internal storage.
So I'm on twrp recovery (rooted Oneplus 3T) and i do a lot of moding which often results in bootloops, so I resort to my backups made in twrp. I was wondering if I'm doing a clean flash of a new rom and it fails, do i still have the backups?
Factory reset wipes only Data , Cache , and Dalvik.
If you select Advanced Wipe and then wipe the Internal Storage or select the option Format Data from the Wipe menu then you will lose your backups (and all your personal data too ) as they are located in Internal Storage/TWRP/Backups.

Yes, if your TWRP backups are stored in internal sdcard, factory reset from settings will wipe the internal sdcard and remove your TWRP folder and the backups contained in that folder.
BUT...
If your backups are stored on external sdcard, they will not be wiped by factory reset from settings, they also would not be wiped by factory reset from TWRP.

Yeah... If you don't have SDcard, make sure your NAndroid backups or ROMs are backed up on your PC or external hard drive. Otherwise you cannot install/flash your new ROM which includes the android system.

Or, you could just factory reset in TWRP, factory reset from within TWRP does not wipe data/media, otherwise known as user storage partition where the TWRP folder is stored, therefore, any TWRP backups stored in the TWRP folder in your internal sdcard will not be wiped by the factory reset process from within TWRP.
However, factory reset in TWRP does wipe data/data partition, where user settings and user installed apps are stored. If your ROMs are also stored in the data/media(user storage partition), they will not be wiped by the factory reset process from within TWRP either.
