Hello,
I am using Viper Rom and Sultan Kernel, when I try to play a game after few minutes the phone stucks and restarts.
I try to underclock 1080 Hz but that doesnt fix the problem.
Does anyone know why or how to fix it? Is this Kernel or Rom problem?
What kernel do you suggest me so to play without any problems?
help me please
thanks in advance
Is your phone overheating? If it isn't it might be the game's compatibility problem.
Try this, use ondemand, sio, no swaps, overclock to 1188.
Give thanks and feedback if it works.
i think that vipers is the worse rom for games try hyper non sense and you will see difference, i also get reboots while playing games, but with hypernon sense never get problem, you can install a lot of apps and customize it yourself without a lot of bugs.

I try this but didn't work. Phone still warm when I play and restarts =/
Maybe is kernel problem?
Can someone with HtcSensation on Viper who can play without problem can tell me what kernel to use?
I think most likely its the game compatibility.
I've played NFS most wanted once.
after 1 hours of gaming, phone got extremely hot, rebooted itself.
Since I rarely play more than an hour, this is the only time it happened.
How long did you play?

You have a lot of background apps that use cpu, I can't play nfsmw, without 1080. Because my device get hot, I also use games for 1 hour.
Inviato dal mio HTC Sensation XE with Beats Audio Z715e usando XDA Premium HD app
Maybe there's too many background apps. And your minfrees are too low. They stack up then minfrees cant handle all of them, causing starvation then reboots.
Because I like flashing my device wont stay in the same rom for longer than a week. So I really don't know how laggy a device can go.
I underclock both GPU and CPU to the state it wont get too hot.
hey there, lack of enough space on ram/swap causes that. there are a lotta background apps simultaneously running, that's why. close'em if u can, otherwise, use a swap drive (sd card swap/cache swap ~ prefer cache one if u don't use a sense based rom, because sense is heavier than AOSPs, so that it'll need more space). because I'd got that problem as well, took it over though.
by the way, if the game u mentioned is GTA Vice city, then am gonna tell u that it is not compatible with Adreno 220 GPU chips, tht's why jumps out causing a reboot.
although that lack of RAM did not cause me to reboot, it just hung so I could not do anything except a manual Reboot. (I mean pulling the battery out )

Your phone probably can't handle GPU overclocking or you're undervolting. How much did you undervolt and what did you set the 2D and 3D GPU speeds to?
Also, in order for the phone to turn off due to heat, the CPU would have to get hotter than 76°C. Water boils at 100°C, so if the phone was indeed over 76°C then touching it would burn your hand.
First, it is not game problem beacause it restarts with any game I play for about 5-10 minutes.
I try to play after I restart my device (so to not have apps running in background) but it happens the same. Also sometimes restarts without get hotter. It is so strange.
I try to underclock Gpu 2d 3d, and clock at 1.188 Ghz without undervolting at all but it happen the same thing.
I try also with AOKP rom but still happen the same....
I will give a try ashkan-khatar solution to swap drive and I hope it works. I don't know what else to do.
thank you all anyway

i found ur solution i think...
dont make that swap i said, make a hard swap, in this way:
download and install miniTool partition wizard home edition, then copy all your sd card to your pc and delete your sd card's partition using that program and repartition it with maintaining 512mb for swap, i mean in case your sd is 16gb, then create 14243.01mb fat32 partition as Primary, then define 512mb Linux Swap as Primary again. then put your stuff on the sd and re-insert it. afterwards, go here: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1630095 and download v2.3 of the script and flash it in recovery, my phone has got really fast since then!!!
of course i don't think whether it's a good idea on sense roms regarding speed, but give it a shot! i'm really satisfied with my phone now!

EDIT: again it's me mate u know, actually since i want everything on my device to be perfect, i don't wanna see some1 having such a horrible problem!
anyway, i tried to drive my phone crazy up enough to see whether it misbehaves or doesn't, in this way:
I overclocked to 1782MHz, selected Performance governor and opened up TTPod and played music. then opened such a heavy game like Modern Combat 4 and started to play (My kernel was Sultan r20 whilst).
it was smooth at first, but then after about 5 min, suddenly it got stuck and rebooted on its own. {I was freakin' out at that time }
In fact, I used to guess that it was because of overheating [since it had happened before, in AnTuTu]. In summary, I tried once more (I think after several times of rebooting, do not remember accurately indeed) with exactly the same situation after a while. But this time, it did weird! :S As it got stuck, but didn't reboot, everything was stuck while the phone was completely unusable at all, neither rebooted, nor let me to reboot it. So pulled out the battery and booted into recovery and after sometime chilling with it, now my phone has got Super XE 4.1.2 Build 9 with its own Kernel, and now when I tried at the temperature of quite above average I think, but it worked like charm! :-O It did NOT even lag a little at the music playback! Thus,
Conclusion: "I" THINK the problem relates to the kernel. Try out what I said and inform me.

Watchdog detected an error and reset the SOC. I'm not really sure what caused the error, but there was some audio stuff above the the error have to do with q6adm, (this is just a guess) so maybe that's what Watchdog means by Q6. Do you have any sound mods installed?
If we can't solve this then the best thing to do is a fresh install of the ROM you're using.

hi again! LOL
believe me I've been trying to find wt's causing that weird problem, and finally i deduced that it's somewhat related to the rom, and on the other hand, when u overclock GPUs, I mean both 2d and 3d, the phone will go up in temp too sooner than normal, and at the higher temps, the cpu will overheat and while the max freq is about 1.7GHz and used in the time, so it'll cause reboot. change 3d to 266mhz n 2d to 200mhz then tey again, i hadnt got any issues even with 1728mhz max using sultan kernel.
besides, i do recommend u to install super XE 4.1.2 build 9

hi!
since installing android revolution HD 3.1.0 after 10 min of playing games (like angry birds) ,
my phone gets super hot , like really hot . it wasnt hot like this before.
after a few mins of super hot phone , the phone close itself.
someone know a way i can tweak some settings and make the phone not get hot so much?
thank you
try 3.1.1 instead, if its still hot
then down clock it back to 1.2
i thought on upgradign to 3.1.1 because then i dont need to wipe
but now all my widgets on the home screens stopped working.
therefore i think i will install 3.6.0
you think it will solve the hot problem?
also how do i clock down ?
thank s

If you go to the thread where you got the rom youll find a zip file which you can install via recovery which puts it back down to 1.2ghz, i think its at the same place in the thread where you download the rom. im gonna try it as my phone gets quite hot too.
thats clocks down should help us with the heat?
i upgraded to 3.6.0
will see whats going on
well my phone keeps getting hot.
before i downclock , is there another option?
i ve got the same problem and i am running mike1968 3.6.0xe and my battery is also getting very hot, sometimes around 41 celcius. i dont play games, dont look movies, dont listen music, just use some apps and mostly facebook. When surfing on the internet on the phone it is getting very hot. Nobody really has an answer for it, at least not at the development section of mike1968 3.6.0 xe. I ordered a new battery the one from de Evo 3d, hopefully it should help.
i have 3 different batteries trust me it wont help you
the prob is in the phone plus the rom , not the battery
i hope someone here can help us

I have a similar issue but not to that extreme...my Sensation is generally between 31C & 34C in use (ARHD v3.6.0xe, ARHD v3.6.1xe).
I am trying the brickedkernel and have tried clocking down to 1.2 (back on 1.5).
I don't remember the phone getting to 30 deg using 3.5.1, but the days are warmer here now.

Definitely keep your phone out of the heat then. I would recommend flashing the latest (3.6.1 as of today). I'm pretty sure there were improvements made to the phone to prevent it from getting too hot, at least it was mentioned in the changelog. Have you tried Faux's kernel at all?
im on 3.6.0 but with faux kernel 0.1.9
i also applied the thermal patch.
still hot,
i know i can upgrade to 3.6.1 i just dont think it will solve the problem
Dunno guys, I had the same issue with every ROM I tried. I finally decided to buy an anker battery and it actually seemed to help. The phone still gets warm, but it definitely runs a little cooler.

If it's general normal use getting the phone hot (web+games), then see good recommendations already posted above.
If you have a runaway app, then use Watchdog and System Tuner to find the app that is causing the problem.
If you have a kernel that supports OC, then get System Tuner and set Under-Freq + Under-volt to give less heat, more battery life. Heat = C* Volt^2 * Freq
Hey guys,
The topic of this thread has change slightly since I started it. Please disregard the first few posts after this one.
The problem is that when I install a new ROM, it works perfectly for an hour or perhaps even the day, and then I start getting random shutdowns. These seem to start out of the blue and I cant work it out.
When installing a new ROM, I always check the MD5 and perform a superwipe before starting to use the ROM. Ill put back a few apps using titanium backup pro.
I don't use any hacked apps or task killers.
I have searched but cant find anything useful.
Currently using Insertcoin Sense 4 RC5. Firmware 3.32.
I have tried three different kernals (Bricked, Sebastian and RCMix), all with the same problem.
Update: tjamaican has kindly sent me a fix he found of the forums, its for a battery fix that worked for me on insertcoin's ICS Sense 4 RC4.1 ROM. However I have just moved to RC5 and the problem is back even with the fix.

I am going to try and set a lower CPU level, already down to 1.2 Ghz with max screen off at ~500Mhz. Seems stable for now, been running 24hrs - no restarts.
This is interesting because I had a GB Rom running at 1.5Ghz with no problems, maybe its something to do with ICS.
Any ideas?
[SOLVED]
Sent the phone off to htc and they have replaced the motherboard. Its all fine and dandy now!
They dont know why it happened or how to avoid it in the future...useful, but if you're still in warranty then send it off, it took exactly a week to get back to me (Monday to Monday). Good luck!

Well no need for factory reset. Superwipe? Yes.
What roms cause this?
What firmware is ur senny on? Ex: 1.17? 3.24?
Phone have physical damage?
Has it been wet?

Thanks for your reply.
No, the phone is basically new, but as I said this has happened before.
Running this ROM on 3.24:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1468683
But this does happen on other ROMS too, they work perfectly for a while and then slowly begin to develop problems. At this stage I usually install the latest version of the ROM but I'm actually happy with the ROM at the moment and dont want to have to keep changing it!
I've been running Darkforest ROM since early stages and have had no problems so far. Maybe try that one. It's on v 5.1.5 now and it's very fast and very stable, moreso than many other ROMs i've tried.
Could be a defective device possibly? Are u using the kernel that comes with the rom?

I would download 1-click cleaner and clean the cache every week. Also you might want to boot into recovery and wipe cache and dalvik cache every two weeks.

I dont think there is anything wrong with the device, I'll try wiping the cache's and see if that makes a difference. Thank you very much for all your answers so far.

Could possibly be an app try removing all your apps and install 1 by 1 give it a couple of weeks see if it happens again, I got a problem from juice defender pro (payed for) worked alright for few days then my launcher started force closing all the time took me ages to figure it out but got there by removing all my apps and installing them 1 by 1 long and time staking but worth a try

Okay well ive tried clearing the cache and davlik cache with no luck, less restarts but they are still there. I am resistant to start removing apps as I use them on a daily basis. Before I try this, does anyone have any other ideas?
Thanks,

What other information would you like?
I think it may be a kernel issue, I'm going to try a few...
Tried three different kernals now, all with the same problem which would indicate its not a kernal problem? Something else perhaps? (Tried bricked, sebastian and RCMix)
its not a problem, its with network connection
I've had this problem since ages and couldn't fix it yet. First thing, download LTE switch and change the value from wcdma preferred to gsm auto. see if it avoids the restarts. Another thing you can try is, change the sim card (I havent tried it yet). Or, if possible, change the back cover. But I'm pretty pretty sure its the problem with the network.
Please reply.

Well I have been at the 1.2GHz level for almost 24 hours now without too much trouble. Im not sure if it was lowering the CPU clock for screen on, or raising the CPU clock for screen off. Either way I can notice the device is slightly slower. I dont see why ICS doesnt like overclocking on this phone, GB was fine with it?!
Max
Update:
Just had a random shutdown, could have been anywhere in the last 20 mins. I really don't know what else to try!
Having EXACT ones you are having. Buy another battery if that doesn't work its a hardware problem. I still need to buy my battery but will post and let you know if it worked.

I'm also starting to think its caused by not letting the battery fully die and recharging it a lot but that's just my guess?
I switched back to gingerbread yesterday and so far I've had no problems which would indicate its not a hardware issue...? Usually by now I've had a few shut downs..
So I went as far as unrooting and switching batteries with my bro and the problem continues idk what to do

Yeah the problems started again for me on gingerbread. I've read its a motherboard problem I think I'm gonna have to send it off to HTC... Great... 3 weeks no phone...
Hi All,
I have Standard HTC Sensation rooted running DarkForest (latest):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1423684
I then flashed this over it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1256668
Whenever I am gaming etc with the device though it gets very hot.
Even before I put the Bricked Kernel over it still got extremely hot when playing games (eg GLWG).
Just wondering if this is something everyone experiences or if it is just my device or if it happens to some phones but not others?
Thanks

Its a very common problem. I think its cause of the running gpu. Happens to me too. Nothing to be distressed about.

Cool, glad to hear it.
Was worrying that maybe the OC'ing hadn't been done properly so wasn't toning down the CPU when it was running too fast and hot.
Was also thinking maybe I had a duff phone and needed to try swap it for a different one
DO NOT WORRY
You could maybe use an app to slower down your speed on your phone if that doesn't work. THIS ONLY WORKS ON ROOTED PHONES
I suggest using the (anTuTu CPU master) on the Google play store.
here is the link: http://bit.ly/JifNkI (Shortened because the link was too long)
Signing up for DropBox is really good i really recommend here's a link so me and you can get extra space! http://db.tt/1a1K7PgD
Guys do any of you know why my Desire S Hangs while running GTA3 for like 5 mins while MED settings, and hangs after few seconds on max settings . It looks like something to do with RAM as if its getting full faster or slower, but it would be nice to be able to play it without hangs
BTW i am new to this devise and For the monent i am running official MIUI V4 (newest version) with Tweaked3_7.1-MIUI_StockICS KERNEL at 1400OC-smartass v2-bfq (second day with this phone so its my first setup (hit me to the head if its faulty))
No worries, looking at your posts you are progressing very fast
smartassV2 is designed for battery saving so do not rely on it for performance. Set ondemand/deadline and smash that game
Do not cry for the battery though

THX for advise . But at these settings it hangs 2 seconds after spawning in-game on med settings, maybe its something to do with freq. of cpu? What is supposed to be most stable FREQ. OC? I am using 1401Mhz maybe its not stable

Or maybe MIUI with its disabled hardware acceleration is not the best choose for gaming
With the settings I gave you above I have highest FPS in Antutu benchmark

I just tried lowering FREQ it still hangs.....
I dont think that Miui being bad choise for gaming is cousing this, becouse until it hangs game is running smoothly. And HANGS means it stops on that frame and phone is nolonger responsive until i remove battery and start again
Do not pull battery you may end with new bricked DS. Have you undervolted?
EDIT: don't know what version of GTA are you using but it may be the game itself. Look here

Yeah its probably game related so i will try to delete all game data and download it again, this game data is from my old phone's SD card maybe files will be different in some way(anyway we will see).
Thanks for help man :good: + rep for you. And by the way I figure you have a lot more experiance with roms than i do :
What would be build (ROM+kernel) that you would recommend me to try next? I dont need real gaming rom i just sometimes have few extra minutes in work or in college that i need to spend somehow and gaming is a good way. What i would like is overall average perfomance 50%battery -50%perfomance or something similar if possible

Much quicker and better to simply press the 'Thanks' button for a post you found useful. You are limited to 8 per day if you do it through the website, or unlimited if you use the app.
Hey man, I have the same problem... Have you fix it after reinstalling and downloading cache? I have ice cold sandwich ROM and few 3D games dont work And cache from this games is from my old SD too

I changed my ROM to CustoNexus (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1885301) and now I have Jelly Bean and I can play all my favourite 3D games:good:
Hi, first of all I would just say that I've searched around and tried different things such as putting a piece of paper between the battery and the wall.
The problem is coming after I have used the phone for about two or three minutes, then it just turns off and reboots. After the reboot it just stays on the splash screen and I have to take out the battery and wait a couple minutes to let the phone cool off. It doesn't get very hot, but I can feel it working. I have tried four ROMS but the problem persists. I started getting the reboots after I S-Off'd the phone and upgraded the firmware and installed ICS. Before that the phone could run for hours and it could also become hot (45 degrees celsius) without any problem. I am currently running:
CM 10 (10-20120818-bruce2728-pyramid)
Build number: cm_pyramid-userdebug 4.1.1 JRO0L eng. bruce.20120818.021714 test-keys
Baseband: 11.69.3504.00P_11.22.3504.07_M
Kernel: 3.0.41 [email protected] #1
I'm not using any over/underclock either.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
UPDATE: I think it is because I undevolted the battery. The only problem is that I can't seem to find the volt option in System Tuner Pro anymore and I don't know which values I should set it to.

Use the reset button there in the voltage section... It will give you back the default voltage

Will that work even though I don't have any backup saved and wiped multiple times or will it just set the settings to what they are today?
Bump, really need help with this issue due to the fact that I need my phone for everyday use. I'm not coming that far into System Tuner Pro before the phone shuts down. Really annoying.
Thanks

I don't think you can restore 'default' voltage settings in System Tuner unless you have saved a previous configuration as default. I would say your best bet to at least try and get some system stability back is to hit the +12.5 mV button which will add that value to every frequency. Try it once, if no success try a second time but you'll need some care or you might cause some other issues. You only need to get as far as the Voltage tab from the System Tuner main page, hopefully you can do that before the phone shuts down.
To give you some idea where your voltages are sitting, my stock settings started at 800mV @ 192 MHz through to 1325mV @ 1.83 GHz. I have the whole lot undervolted by 12.5mV.
Undervolting doesn't mean reducing the voltage across your battery.
It's just reducing the potential difference across your processor.
Now, to remove the undervolage that you've already done, disable the set on boot option in system tuner.
Flash your ROM without wiping & that's all you need to do.
If the problem still persists, try this fix: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1622683
Thanks guys! I can't see any voltage option in System Tuner Pro though. Does this mean that my kernel does not support it? Still running what is stated in the OP. Really appreciate it.
So, now I have AHRD with 3.33 fw. I also have a custom kernel. How does my settings look? Is it supposed to be 12.5v between every stage? I think I only changed the top 4 or so, so I don't have a clue what they should be set to.

Looks like you're actually overvolted there, even before you hit +12.5mV a couple of times. My default settings were 800mV @ 192 MHz then 12.5mV increase between frequencies as you said, up to 1325mV @ 1.83 GHz.
Which kernel do you have now? For the sake of the argument I'd suggest dropping your voltages back down to normal and see what happens first.
hm
You can try Increasing the Min Feq to the second lowest. dont remember the value. You can also try another kernel, Iv been using brices cm10 for quite while an i hat reboot issues with the tamcore kernel but not with the ones which cme with the rom. The rom is pretty stable now

Thanks, I tried what you said, but it was no good. Now I use this kernel.
Edit: I got 1 min and 37 secs with those settings in Stability Test.

I've tried about 4 ROMS, sense and non sense, with stock kernels and without, and it still happens. Really annoying, but thanks for the reply.
It seems that the phone shuts down when it gets hot, not too hot just +-22 degrees celsius. I can let it run for hours when idle, but if i start to surf the web (or any other task) it shuts down after two minutes.
I can't see why your phone would shut down at such a low temperature, there has to be something else going on, I think under/over-volting can be ruled out for the moment. Can I recommend having a read of this thread, I'm thinking a logcat or last_kmsg might be useful in trying to find the problem.
Unfortunately I'm not equipped to decipher logcats etc. so you'll need to pass them on to a dev or someone with a bit of debugging knowledge. For last_kmsg wait until the phone dies, then boot it back up and grab the last_kmsg through adb as per the thread I linked you to.
I can't remember off the top of my head but there are some people on here offering live help on IRC, that might be your best bet. Either that or the dev of the ROM you're using might be able to help.
Thanks, will definately check this out.
