LTE Only - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

How do i make the phone run on
A) LTE only
B) 3G only
C) 1X only
Thanks in advance for any help!

Just data without regular texting or calling?
All data settings are set by changing the radios set up.
You can toggle between these through phone info app.
Sent from club Clean Rom

I don't think you can do that, but phone info app might be a good idea to look at. It might help battery life since the phone is only running one radio rather than two.

i used the phone info app, and when i press lte only it takes me back to the default lte/cdma whatever thing. any ideas how to make it stick to just LTE

You know LTE only would also disable texting/calling? I'm sure it can be done but I'm not sure how.

Exactly. Our phones are NOT VoLTE (Voice Over LTE). LTE is only used for data at this point. There are no Verizon phones on the market at this point that support VoLTE, although Verizon is reportedly in testing. Ten years from now, Verizon will probably kill (shut down) their 3G and 1X networks entirely, like they did to analog several years back.
Just for information sake, Voice calls on the Verizon network ALWAYS go out over the 1X network (currently). 3G was never designed to handle voice (it is data only), and VoLTE is still in testing at Verizon.

It would be awesome if you could do 1x and 4g radios and disable 3g. You might be able to get more battery life out of the phone. I have a 4200 may battery that lasts me 2 days (48 hours).

how to bypass throttling on AT&T

Last month and this month again I have been throttled. I have been reading the countless number of posts on the subject on this and other forums and have decided to post in this thread everything I have found out from research and personal testing.
these answers can be found (except for good instructions on the calling trick) but are buried in other posts... thats why i decided to make this because it sucks reading over 50 posts on 10 pages in a thread for one simple set of instructions.
TOP 5%: AT&T doesn’t disclose any information about the top 5% but I have no reason to believe personally that they are lying about it. The reason for this is last month I pushed 20gb when I was throttled, this month I was throttled again as well but I was throttled after using about 1GB more then I used last month.
I urge everybody to use as much data as they can ONCE THROTTLED. However, as being throttled sucks, don’t abuse it till after you are throttled!
How to UN throttle:
The easiest way (and one which I cannot confirm as I am 100% stock), is to install a custom ROM that supports network modes (force HSPA / LTE) – and then – once changed to HSPA – THEN change your APN.
Changing your APN alone will NOT un throttle you!
For us that are stock this becomes a bit more difficult. AT&T has designed its network to FORCE you onto LTE when available – however, with so many iPhones and other 3g devices, the signal is still there!
A trick I learned and have done successfully for the last few days is this:
1) Add the PHONE apn
2) Select the PHONE apn
3) Enable FLIGHT MODE
4) DISABLE FLIGHT MODE – BUT – BEFORE AT&T CONNECTS TO DATA YOU MUST TERMINATE A CALL!!! Just make a call and make sure it connects before the 5 seconds or so you have when the data reconnects.
Once I did this, it seems to stick. I have even forced myself back on LTE and tried this over and over again and it seems to be working. The key is to make sure your phone has connected to another person BEFORE AT&T’s data reconnects (about 5 seconds like I said).
EVEN AFTER YOU POWER OFF/ON THE DEVICE (i swap batteries 2/3 times a day) the 3G still sticks!!
To get back on LTE after my billing cycle restarts, i just go back to the PTA APN and all is well. back on LTE!
To make this easier on myself, I call my office (goes straight to vm), then I go through steps 2 and 3 – then when im ready for 4 – I turn it on real quick then goto call logs, it’s the top most option, press it. And im on 3g !
MYTHS:
1) yes there is a folder called /data/system/throttle – this doesn’t appear to have any effect on throttling. However, don’t remove the folder – or you will crash every few seconds and will need to recreate the folder with adb before you can use your phone again! My files before and after throttling are the exact same.
2) visual voicemail has NOTHING to do with throttling, I read someplace about a theory that if you froze visual vm that AT&T couldn’t throttle you (for whatever reason) – I had my VMM frozen for this entire billing cycle and still was throttled
3) Netflix ETC: this is a funny one because the day after I used Netflix for the first time in my life, I got the 5% warning, the second time I used it I was throttled.. However this billing cycle I didn’t use Netflix or any streaming service (other than youtube) and was still throttled…. I was however throttled at 1GB more data useage then last month…
im still looking at the possibility of AT&T throttling people and putting them on a different subnet then normal users..
another note: I believe this will ONLY work if you are provisioned for LTE. Meaning if you are throttled on the 3G network - you will stay throttled... but if you are provisioned on the LTE network - thats the only place they throttle you (till they figure out a lot of us are doing this...)
Rather than doing the whole phone call trick...have you tried just deleting the PTA apn?

thats a great idea and I'll test it. But I think I like the phone trick better either way since it works, and sticks.
and if I get a mms message I swap apn back to pta , download the mms, swap back then phone trick again
also since I'm throttled with like 8 days left would have to just add it again in a few days

I went up north for a couple weeks and LTE is awesome...but I got the warning about reaching the 5% thing. I never got a warning before but then I never got close to 4gigs either. I don't live in an LTE area either so it's funny I got a warning when I was in an LTE area and never when I was home.
Att Throttle Samsung Skyrocket
Which custom rom should i use for bypass data throttle on att skyrocket.
Its funny you mention that.. while on our trip we were rarely in lte coverage (a few days). Within 2 days of being home I got my warning and then was throttled within 24 hrs back in November. This month I got the warning but no throttle yet (been home on wifi all week)

thought wish my phone had the option to force hspa+ without roming
Call and complain...worked for me!

This did not work for me. I used the Phone APN and was able to connect to the HSPA+ network but the speeds are still throttled.
sorry should have updated.. as of the first of March it stopped working. (when they came out with new 3gb/5gb throttle rules)
now there is absolutely no way to bypass it

Come on theres always a way, let the game of cat and mouse continue.
So I guess this is because of the change. I had been using this bypass method on my galaxy 2 skyrocket for months with no problems, it was more than fast enough for me, then last week I decided to go back to lte speeds for a while until I got 'the text' like had worked in the past. Except this time I cant get back to HSPA+ by switching apn and going into airplane mode and terminating a call, it just keeps going back to throttled lte now.
so no others ways :?
None of these methods work. AT&T change their throttle rates after being sued by a customer.
If you're on 3G or 4G you're throttled after using 3 gigs of data.
If you're on LTE you're throttled after using 5 gigs of data.

does the voice use LTE or just data?

Lte is just for data. 2g/3g is data and voice.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using XDA
At some point when ATT has migrated all of their coverage to LTE capability the network will switch to LTE for voice. Neither ATT or Verizon use LTE for voice calls yet.
Likely within a decade they will turn off their traditional TDMA based GSM voice network altogether and everything will be on their LTE spectrum.

I'm wondering if they'll throttle LTE during phone calls as well. Hmmmmm
pretty sure they only use gsm for calls, as people without data plans that have smartphones (dont know why they do that ) still make calls and text, just cant access teh interwebz

No you didn't get it. Even without LTE they slow down any connection when on a phone call to save bandwidth. You can be getting 6 mbps down and then make a phone call and barely hit one and the upload is like 0.00mbps.
Test it out. Immsuremit will be like that once LTE is voice enabled.

The current deployments of LTE are based on the LTE Release 8 with LTE used for data and 3GPP/3GPP2 (i.e. GSM/UMTS/CDMA/EVDO) for voice.
This will all change when the carriers move to the VoLTE (Voice over LTE), which is most likely a few years away.

Yes, from what I understand, there is no standard yet for Voice over LTE, the various stakeholders are still working this out, and its still a long ways away.
So for the present time (and near future), LTE is data only (and no voice) on all carriers.

I wasn't agreeing or disagreeing. I was stating something entirely different from the OP.
Its not widely known that AT&T throttles all data speeds during calls and I was being sarcastic by adding that once you can do LTE over voice, they'll throttle that too during calls only.
Run a speedtest next time your on the phone and you'll see. Doesn't matter what data plan you have, they throttle all data speeds during calls.

Agreed, I told At&t that i wanted to cancel my service because Im paying for hotspot and its shif during calls. I was never told this before signing up for service. Im upset because hspa+ is enough for my needs and will work during calls but they had to go and throttle the service!

The standard is pretty clear.
You have 3 options for voice under LTE (as of Rel8):
VoLTE - IMS VoIP using AMR
CS (circuit switched) Fallback - basically have the phone camp in the LTE network, and fallback to 3GPP/3GPP2 only in the case of voice calls
SVLTE (Simultaneous Voice and LTE) - the scenario I already described and launched with most NA carriers
The reason for the delay in VoLTE deployment is the difficulty (and cost) in implementation. VZW, AT&T, etc. would probably want to recoup investments in the 3G network already in place before they spend more for VoLTE. At some point in the future, recovering air spectrum from the 3G band is going to be a higher priority than re-using the deployed 3G network, and that's when we'll see more VoLTE movement.

4g toggle and other questions

Ok, i finally got this thing rooted. I have a few questions about this, and these may be more ICS questions than Photon questions.
Do I have to do anything to turn on 4g? I cant find anywhere to do this. I liked the toggle buttons that showed at the top of older version of android, anyway to get those back? I ask because i was in an area yesterday where 4g service is available, but i never saw the phone automatically change to 4g.
Also, a program that i have used alot in the past is Roam Control. This is so that when i was at my hunting land, i could set my phone to roam only. I noticed more options in Preferred Network Mode. Is this how to set my phone to roam only? Because i installed Roam Control, and it doesnt work for this phone.
Check in development for the toggles. Still no 4G toggle. But rangerbry did an awesome job porting the others over.

In the mobile networks section of the phone there are options, in your case, "CDMA" or "CDMA/LTE". I would think if you leave CDMA/ LTE selected the phone will connect to LTE when it or IF it is available. If not it will simply stay on 3G/CDMA.
How did you know the area you wer ein actually had LTE? Sprint seems to be launching a market when there is like 20% coverage, so good chunks of an area will not see it light up yet on the phones.
not lte but 4g. i know because my other phone got 4g service there. It seems like if u leave this phone on automatic, its not actually automatic cause it wont pickup 4g. which option do i use for roam only?

Would be really nice to have some way to toggle 4g on/off... I know my buddy's Evo3D (yes, wimax...) can easily toggle it on/off. He said his battery life is WAY better when he leaves his wimax radio off, and I would imagine leaving the LTE radio off would be beneficial.
As there isn't a whole lot of Sprint rollout for LTE right now, turning it off permanently isn't a bad thing... But if I'm traveling or just curious - it would be nice to have this toggle!

Yea, it seems like this is the only method right now. Just set the network to "CDMA" and it will only be able to connect to 3g. I don't see any change in the 4g status, any way to verify this?
I was actually surprised at how granular my buddy's 3vo was with 4g - it was almost like wifi, had everything separate (and this is stock...) So I'm really hoping we can sort out something similar - because I don't see how wimax and LTE are different in these respects - no?

Nah, as I suspect that unlike WiMax (which was a separate chipset) the LTE radio is combined with the CDMA radio on the chipset (and maybe even the GSM radio, if the chipset's advanced enough- I know there's combined CDMA/GSM radios).

I don't know if you "got" your answer, but I was talking with a Sprint Rep and she told me that the LTE just "turns" on. It's kinda like Tmo's HSPA. It's part of the Network. It just switches over if it sees it.
In your settings, you can say CDMA or CDMA/LTE. That's asking 3G or 3G/4G LTE. As far as a toggle, someone needs to come up with it. LoL!!
Your best bet, until a developer comes up with the answer, is to make a shortcut to that. I want this phone. =.P

The issue, of course, is that having the LTE radio (which appears to be a separate entity, unlike GSM where it's merely another modulation scheme that the chipset understands) be on all the time drains power that's essentially being wasted since Sprint's LTE Network is largely nonexistent.
The reason for wanting a Toggle is for those folks who spend their time in non-LTE (or marginal LTE signal) areas, who'd like a quick way to either test for an upcoming rollout, or to use LTE only when in a known LTE-enabled area.

Yea. I completely understand that. That's why I also stated that OP should just have a shortcut to their setting where they can change from CDMA to CDMA/LTE. That way OP can turn off LTE when not using it. A toggle, of course, would make this process a whole lot easier. I don't see why there isn't a toggle. There's a toggle for 4G WiMax. It does the same thing. When it's not connected, it just idles and scans again. It uses more battery looking for 4G to connect to than actually using it. LoL!! I've noticed that 4G WiMax "sleeps" quickly once it connects. I hope LTE would do the same.
Let me stop before I start ranting on. LoL!!

I looked at them briefly....am I missing something or does the battery saving one not give you the ability to give parameters like syncing every 30 minutes/1 hour or the like? If the ability is there, I couldn't figure out how to edit that one properly. I only saw 3 options and the one that'd be closest to what I'd want basically read like it will only sync when you're actively using the phone. I want that, but additionally would like it to connect and sync periodically and shut data back off. I'd used Green Power Premium on my Epic for that but thought maybe Smart Actions would give me the ability to do away with using it.

My billing does not cycle on the 1st. I believe it differs for everyone.
It worked, and stayed on my phone even after reboot.
After I turn back on lte/GSM auto it says LTE for a few seconds then the radio restarts and when it comes back it only says 4G and not LTE. I ran speed test then and its no better then I cycle airplane mode to get LTE back and still no difference what kind of speeds do you guys get once your throttled? I do only get 4 bars of LTE but once I'm throttled I can only hit .54 down and 1 up. That's just ridiculously slow, anything internet based is unusable at those speeds.
Also the worst part is I did a speed test before trying this and I hit 6Mbps now I can't get it back

I have a way of getting past throttling but you won't be able to use visual voicemail. Basically what you do is switch between the unlimited data plan and unlimited data plan with visual voicemail. They're the same plan except one has visual voicemail and one doesn't. When you're throttled, call att and ask to be switched to the unlimited data plan with visual voicemail(or data plan without visual voicemail if you already have it). They'll switch you over and your data resets. It's a pain in the ass calling in every time you're throttled but it's better than being throttled. I've been using this forever and mentioned it a few times on these forums but i think it's too tedious for some.

I have a way of getting past throttling but you won't be able to use visual voicemail. Basically what you do is switch between the unlimited data plan and unlimited data plan with visual voicemail. I'll give it a try thanks!

I'm at 8.3GB with still a week to go and no throttling yet. I'll give this a try If I get throttled at all. so far, I'm getting full LTE speeds.

Connection dropping

I keep seeing my 3g connection dropping completely. I'll be browsing the web and im not moving at all and all of a sudden the connection is gone. I first thought it had something to do with the connection optimizer but it doesn't seem like that. Did anyone else experience this or know a solution to that?

i noticed that this was happening when mostly when the phone was going back and forth between 3g and lte. so i changed the mobile network settings to cdma only instead of cdma/lte and it was much steadier.

by changing it to the CDMA setting you are only going to be on the 3g network.

So there is really no solution besides going to 3g only. But it really isnt jumping from lte to 3g . It will show 3g and all of a sudden nothing. Sometimes even showing me the little x over the bars.

This happens in an area with partial Spark.
Mine does same thing because I have 3 towers all equal distance from me. 1 is Spark other 2 are not.
If you travel to another location you probably won't see the issue but in short from talking to some eng. the phone is doing 1 of two things.
A) It see's an LTE signal and as LTE is primary it starts to try to connect to it but before it fully does (thus why you never see LTE icon) it realizes it doesn't support the switched fall back required to allow Spark phones to get calls while on LTE so it kicks you back to 3g. This process continues to repeat :/
B) The phone see's an weak LTE signal, as is primary starts to connect but before it fully does the signal is determined to be to weak and falls back to 3g.
In both cases the phone possibly would never show you the LTE icon as that will only show once fully established and it doing this jumping back and forth causes 3g to go and die where forcing CDMA fixes.
The other downfall to this is it KILLS the battery.
Connecting to WiFi won't help with the battery part either as it still does the jumping around.
Your only option is really force CDMA mode only when in an area like this, for me, this is at home only, or live with it and lower battery life until they upgrade the towers all the way.

Thank you for the detailed explanation. I just got off an hour long phone call with sprint with them trying to explain me my phone is defective and my wifes as well. Then when i told them it isn't they started going into the "Yeah its our network" mode but then came back saying she put a ticket in for me and my wife to get the phones repaired. I told her I don't want that to stop worrying about the phone and to send me an air rave. Problem at my house solved lol. They are sending me an air rave

You could try turning off or on, depending on whether you have it enabled already, connection optimizer

Hate to share the news but that won't solve your problem, it actually could make it worse as it's now another signal to bounce between.
4G IS always priority when enabled, so regardless of you having a "tower" inside your home now, that does not provide 4G, so if the phone's seeing one that does which is what's causing the problem your issue will remain the same meaning you're forced to put the phone in CDMA only mode still.
The problem isn't with the 3G tower or 3G signal, the problem is the 4G signal being detected but not yet compatible with SPARK due to missing the circuit fall back feature, which the phone doesn't know until it attempts to connect. In some areas where it's partially setup the phone can connect to 4G and just calls won't work, in other areas it's disabled or doesn't exist and this problem happens.
Your solution will simply need to be put the phone in CDMA only mode when in a troubled area only, or just leave it in that mode and have no 4g until everything is upgraded better, or deal with as is.
