Porting Ubuntu seems to be fairly easy, once CM 10.1 is released I'll try porting Ubuntu. About Firefox OS I haven't had a brief look at it.

Firefox OS is built upon an Android layer, which means it is built with the actual android source code, so a port should be something trivial.
I think Ubuntu OS works in the same way.

EDIT: When I say android source code I mean the source for the device and the kernel, not the android os code itself.

Can I build (with eclipse, I assume?) android from an iPad3? Referring to building Android ROMs (CyanogenMod primarily) and themes.
Is the hardware capable? Or do I absolutely need to get a Linux box?

Hw, maybe. Sw, no. You can ssh to a server though (assuming there's an ssh app on ios)

hey guys i thought it would be a good idea to port a rom based on UBUNTU for our little pico.i l know it is already part of a project but i was thinking of one not based on cm10 .this is because its interface is really good.galaxy s3 already has one for itself but our pico is no less hence we can try porting one .please help!

This it's one of the most active dev groups on XDA. Hope we get a feel of Jolla Sailfish too when it's eventually released.

I really don't know if I see it happening we are starting to slow down and now we got 4.4.3 coming most devs will be all over that
Short answer is yes and no:
Jolla (from rumors) was also working on an application-layer shell of Sailfish for use on phones without switching to the OS as a whole.
The rom itself is only a question if the chipset is supported, and if the drivers are available, and if it's possible to unite them to make the ROM...
I did hear it uses CM10.1 as a base.
Edit: Here is news about Sailfish OS http://forum.xda-developers.com/jol...android-devices-release-t2696409/post51417864

Do you want to build or port? Building is where you build a room from source using a device tree. Porting is simply finding a room from a similar phone or tablet. If you Google you can find lots of guides on how to do so. Building will take slightly longer(maybe more) and a device tree and a computer with a distribution of Unix like Ubuntu or Mac os or Linux mint and can take more than a few hours depending on your processor and if you have an ssd

MIUI is android
Yeah, Ubuntu Touch, Firefox OS, and Sailfish are it but believe me when I say this- none of them are worth your time. I had all of them installed via MultiROM and they are all jokes. Sailfish is somewhat interesting but the other two are pretty much worthless compared to Android.
