WTF is wrong with this phone?

Hey guys.. So I've had my inspire for about 2 or 3 months now, and this thing is driving me apeshhh. Here is why...
For a few weeks now, the phone would randomly restart in the middle of doing something, always random. Sometimes while writing a msg in the stock facebook app. Sometimes when browsing market, sometimes when browsing using the web browser. Today I wanted to download Astro to see if the music I put on the phone went to external or internal SD. As soon as the download finished, the phone restarted. After it booted back up I looked through apps, and it never installed. I went back to market and searched it, pulled it up, and it shows installing.... let it sit for 5 minutes... nothing. Restarted, same thing. Pulled the battery... same thing... I can't cancel it, or try again. It will now no longer install anything else.
I figured maybe it needs to download something that it just doesn't have the network speed to use, and trying turning on wifi. IT WONT EVEN TURN ON. Under the settings menu to turn it on, it says error. When i tap on it, the error msg just goes off then comes back right away.
Anybody else experience this? I really wish SOMEBODY would come out with a decent f**king phone on the AT&T network.... I guess I can now add HTC to the list of people that can't build a decent phone. Just below Samsung... (What a POS line of phones they have released).
Anyway, phone is stock, not rooted, nothing turned off, completely stock.
How does the warrenty work now? I bought the phone outright, cash, $500... for this....

Could be your phone mate. I've had this phone maybe about three months and haven't experienced those issues. Just might be a lemon you have. Where did you purchase the phone?

Back up your stuff and factory reset. If that doesn't work then either Root it and try a different ROM or get a replacement phone.

You might want to look at the thread in here about random shutdowns. It looks like the batteries on these phones can be the culprit. My phone randomly shutdown, sometimes restarted. I thought it was a ROM I had loaded at first. The problem got progressively worse no matter what ROM I used. It would do it maybe once a day & then within less than 3 weeks I have to keep it plugged in all the time. It happened when I opened a power-intensive app like navigation or a game. The battery is covered under warranty.

This issue seems to be rather uncommon, but it does exist.
Nothing compared to what Captivate owners went through.
Lemons do happen, but as suggested, I'd try another battery first. If that doesn't solve the problem, there shouldn't be any issue with getting a warranty replacement.
And that warranty replacement will, with near certainty, be a good one. Again, unlike the Captivate.

I've had mine for about 3 months with none of these issues. HTC phones for me have been great. Even their customer service and support if their products. And I have had Samsung,motorolla, and LG none at the same level of build quality. If you continue having problems get in touch with the HTC support they will help if not let u know if you can get a replacement.

I am a former captivate owner. That phone was so bad that it destroyed it's own internal memory. Every app continously force close, every process, upon startup one day. Restored a backup, got nothing, reflashed, got nothing, mounted it and formated it then ran a memory checking utility on my computer with it, and it showed like 46% of the sectors being bad, after then 2nd test somewhere in the high 50s. I promtly punched in the screen and folded the phone in half, and tore it into 2 pieces... So i think that may be why I'm relatively patient with this phone.. (that was also my 3rd captivate replacement). (Debating using a picture of the phone as-is in a DIY to fixing captivates and post it in that forum... get all your frustration out and buy a new phone.. ha ha.)
I will call HTC and see talk to a rep, maybe they know more about the problem and will be able to determine whether the phone or the battery is at fault.
Also, factory reset did not fix the wifi problem. Instead of immediately going back to error under it's status, and spent about 10 seconds trying to connect, then came up with error. This leads me to believe it's hardware related.
I will most likely push for a replacement phone then. I do have a concern with that though... My phone has never gotten wet, and only has a small indication of falling out of my pocket while sitting in a stadium chair (maybe a 12 inch drop onto concrete). Will this void my warrenty? The scar left behind is hardly noticeable, but if they looked for it, it will be seen. Another thing is, when I pull my battery cover off, there are 2 screws along the side, one is covered by a sticker that reads VOID, black sticker with white text. Is that some kind of indicator of water damage? I'm more familiar with white stickers turning red or pink from water damage... and as said, this phones never been wet.

At&t is usually good about replacing defective phones and will be faster than dealing with htc. You obviously have experience with at&t warranty having owned a captivate.

Those stickers are intact right? As long as their intact and not "punched in," which would indicate a screwdriver has penetrated in order to get the phone open, you should be good, as far as that's concerned.

Uhh well bad luck for you... I dont think this is a common problem...

[Q] Last hope: Desire S stuck in bootloader S-on

Hello,
My Desire S froze when updating Skype 2 weeks ago.
Removed battery. Phone stuck on HTC logo.
Went to bootloader for hard reset. When hard rest chosen phone freezes.
Went to recovery, phone starts recovery. Black screen, green icon. Then goes dark. Starts to vibrate 6-7 times. Then remains off. Battery out, battery in. Back to HTC logo again.
Laptop recognized phone when plugged in with fastboot mode. Under device manager (win 7) "HTC phone".
I bought the phone in Thailand, but am now in Philippines where there is no HTC repair center.
I managed to find RUU_Saga_HTC_Thailand_1.35.1113.2_Radio_20.28d.30.0805U_3805.04.02.01_M_release_183327_signed
Which matches my phone. However when trying to install the rom, the above app freezes on "restarting bootloader". I've left it there for over an hour.
I've tried ADB, but it's not picking up the phone.
I'm guessing either of the above can't load, as the phone is S-on.
But I cannot go S-off as I can't get the phone to boot, or any of the above software to find the phone. Again, windows is picking up that there's a HTC phone plugged in.
I've tried everything I know, and am at my wits end into thinking the phone is finished.
Can anyone help with something I may have overlooked, or have a suggestion to bring this back to life?

It's most probably a hardware problem. There's a high chance that your phone's emmc chip is fried when u remove the battery. it's common in htc due to the phone design. My phone encountered same thing 2 weeks ago. sent for repair and they change the mainboard. I was lucky they ignored that my phone was S-on(warranty voided)

I was thinking hardware last week after everything was failing. But as it was still booting to fastloader, and being picked up via usb was holding out hope it might just be the s-on preventing me from putting on a new rom. And not a mainboard gone.
Flying back to Thailand for the warranty would cost the same as buying a new phone ...
If taking a battery out when a phone is frozen fries a mainboard on HTC ... I doubt I will buy one again.
Looking at Galaxy 2. But also having doubts due to wifi reports and overheating screen. Can't afford another dud smartphone.
If anyone's got anything else to get this thing up to see if the mainboard is indeed dead, or it's something else, do make a suggestion please!

I have same problem like this before and it's really pain in the a#$. Also, there is one HTC service center here in the Philippines, check it out on HTC site.

Yes, I've been in touch with HTC repair center in Manila via phone and email. I've been waiting for reply for over one week now!
I'm not in Manila, which would mean using fedex to send it up to them. Then bank transfer to pay for repair and shipping back.
If it is the Motherboard that's gone, all the above will probably cost more than a new phone
But I won't know until HTC Manila actually bother to reply!?!

no,this problem happens if you pull the battery out when installing apps
the emmc chip is probably dead,if so you need to send it for warranty or replace the emmc chip yourself

What else is there to do but take the battery out?
Either way, to have a "premium" phone like the HTC Desire S, burn out a chip, or indeed have a popular app causing it to brick etc is simply not good enough.

It simply means they've lost another customer.
The phone, when working, was wonderful. Looking at the Galaxy S 2 today, by all accounts a "better" phone, and it was sad. As, for me, the HTC Desire S was much more preferable.
Except of course for it's 6 week lifespan ... bad customer care etc

Just to bad that you did not bought it here. My phone died two months ago (used it only for a month), sent it to the store and they've sent it to service center (in Manila). Had to wait for a month for them to fix it. Motherboard issues I think. Good thing I still have warranty.

yeah,this is really bad
but mine has been working for 3months without any problem,& the customer support here is good
if you dont mind voiding the warranty you can buy a eMMC & replace it yourself
if you do so you wont get this problem again

There is software "hard" reset option. Instead of pulling the battery out, press all hardware buttons together (vol up, vol down, power button) and phone will reboot. I said this many times before in many topics: never pull out your battery when the phone is on. I learned it the hard way.

Thanks kartkk. I wouldn't know where to begin with the physical replacement of the eMMC chip. Not even sure I can buy one around here.
I might call HTC Thailand and ask if I can send it to them via DHL or the like.

maybe you should ask HTC to write that in big red writing on the back of their batteries as they start to reach burn your finger stage when the phone freezes.
Or maybe copy Nokia's hardware which is near on indestructible.
Quite simply, I am not a phone tech person. I'm a simple end user.
I've not had a problem taking a battery out of other phones.
Again, if taking a battery out of a phone kills it when it freezes, then quite simply the phone is not good enough. Or, if it is likely to. Then, again, in big writing for simple folk like me, big red writing on the battery saying
"don't take this out, even if it starts to feel like it's going to melt"

BTW if anyone can point me to a step-by-step on how to determine if the eMMC chip is fried or not, I would appreciate it.

try searching on ebay for sandisk mmc (or any other brand just dont get the same one used on the DS)
its always dangerous to pull the power from any device which works like a pc even in a pc pulling the power out while the device is on can harm the hardware &/or software i know many people who damaged their pc from pulling the plug while its on

Best to my knowledge it was an emmc chip that was recommended to be replaced. Not an MMC.
While removing "power" abruptly from any electronic device is not recommend, one is sometimes left with no choice. Complete device freeze, no buttons working etc.
There is also a destine difference between a PC and a mobile phone. Though, it must be said from my point of view: today's Android phones, are very reminiscent of old windows 95/98 OS's in terms of stability and hardware issues.

I lock my phone and about 10 mins later I go to unlock it and the phone powers up meaning that it has been turned off. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the charge of the battery but it keeps doing this. The other week the phone wouldn't respond for about 5 hours I would touch it and the touch screen was completely dead. I locked the phone and then the screen went black and the touch buttons at the bottom lit up and that was it the phone crashed so I needed to restart it and it just wouldn't work. 5 hours later when I woke up it responded and Bare in mind I ran about 5 ruus to get the phone back to stock so it wasn't a software problem. So has anyone else experienced one of these problems. The random shutdown is my issue at the moment. I'm considering returning it for repair because isn't it true that htc have a 2 year warranty in the uk?

Sounds daft but I'd put a piece of folded paper on top of the battery to ensure it has perfect contact and isn't able to move at all.....I have heard of others who have experienced this issue.
I would also see if you could get another battery for a short time and try that just to rule out that it is an issue with the battery.

Doesn't sound daft it's a great Idea. I have blu-tack on the slide off cover at the bottom to keep it from jiggling as one of the plastic clips broke. I will probably test another battery because they aren't exactly expensive. Do you know anything about HTC's warranty int he uk ben_pyett? Thanks for the help

I have heard multiple users that they simply rang HTC up, complained that battery didn't work and got a new one sent out.....so try that....and attempt if possible to hang on to old one, as if it turns out to be device, you get a free battery

Same issue for me, it drove me nuts. Turned out to be a faulty battery when sent off to HTC/Vodafone for repair. They replaced it so I wonder if it's a known issue.

My phone used to shut down randomly and I searched and found out that it is due to the bad design of battery placement in this phone. All I had to do was put a small piece of paper and it has never shutdown till then.

I'm definitely going to try this, I've been getting lots of resets and I'm relieved it's not a rom issue
edit: how many times did you guys fold the paper over?

i had issues with my phone turning off too, had it slightly wet at one point so i took it to a phone repair joint, they replaced a few things charged me and it had the same problems afterwards, a test battery proved it was the bloody battery all along!
the tech there let me know our batteries have a soft edge that when pushed up hard against the battery slot it slightly deforms, seems like a bad design if you look at the battery up close you can see one where the edges get pushed in a bit, (well on mine anyway) the test battery i borrowed didn't have the edges pushed in.

Had this problem too. Paper did the trick.

My HTC 828 is always going off by itself, once I open the camera or put on my mobile data the phone goes off please what should I do?

Me too have same problem..My HTC desire 828 dual sim turning off automatically, mostly when I play any videos or turning on camera. Tried factory reset many times but no use..

Worst company ever
The only reason this phone was with me was due to its good camera qualities else
This phone couldn't give any better loudness if not accompanied to speakers ....each time while watching any video I need speakers
Well ...this phone made me realise that it's not necessary that good priced phone are necessarily good

hi have same issue on my htc d820ts so i flashed it with new firmware and check the battery connector or power supply area its ok but phone issue is same so please if some one have any idea help me

Replacement Parts

Does anyone know where I could order replacement battery contact pins (what is the proper term?) My SGS4G was given to me and the pins were mangled I was able to straighten 2 of them out, but one was so bad that a piece of it broke off when I was trying to fix it. My phone still turns on and hopefully charges. Also with these pins being messed up would that affect the life of the battery? Earlier this morning my phone was at 80% battery level. After playing a few songs and installing a system font with ROMtoolbox, I rebooted my phone and got a warning that my battery was almost dead. Would these contacts cause that? Or is it just my battery (My biggest theory). I would really appreciate any help that can be gven to me on this issue.

Without actually knowing what each contact does, and without being able to interpret "El my no" into working English with a meaning, my guess is that you're asking if your phone will still work with the contact broken. And the answer is... maybe? If it charges, great. It charges. If it turns on, well, it's probably still pulling power.
If it doesn't charge, and switching batteries or using something like a PowerSkin/keeping it on an external battery forever works for you then great... it still works.
You've already said it's turned on. I'm assuming from what you said that it was working while on battery as well, so that's obviously functioning as it should.
That basically leaves as its question... what did that pin do? And the answer is... something. Probably. If you're pulling battery normally now, it was probably a ground. Which means your phone may become a brick at some unexpected point in the future when there's a tiny power fluctuation that would normally have gone through there, but enjoy it while it lasts.
Additionally, battery-level fluctutations on restarting are fairly normal and apparently generally a sign that the battery itself is fading. Amusingly you can trick the phone into believing that there's a higher battery level by plugging into AC, restarting again, and then unplugging after it finishes the restart. Alternatively, setting the phone into Airplane mode for 30 minutes will usually jump battery level by 10-40%, depending on what its level was before and after the restart. But your best bet is to just plan on replacing the battery if you haven't destroyed the phone by poking at the pins which weren't made to be poked at.

I would look at a local repair shop. Most of them can fix those basic things without much problem.
I would just google phone repair and your city see what pops up. Read the reviews on the places and then see what they can do.

[Q] Nexus 5 Dead - Noise from Motherboard?

Hi guys,
Fairly new to posting on this forum but ive been a long time reader!
Last week i was at the office getting some steady use out of my Nexus 5 (which is in a Spigen NeoHybrid Case) when i put it in my pocket, got up, and accidentally hit the phone on the corner of my desk. The collision wasnt really that hard and so i didnt expect anything to come of it especially considering it was in a case and ive seen people drop theirs from a fair height and still function normally.
However ever since that moment i have been unable to turn my device on at all. It wont charge, it wont connect to the PC, absolutely nothing. I trawled the internet looking at all number of solutions including the various button hold methods.
I decided to chuck a new fully charged battery in the phone and it still didnt turn on but the phone did output some strange rhythmic buzzing noise before getting extremely hot and then nothing again.
Ive also taken out the motherboard and put it in to a healthy Nexus 5 phone and get the same issue which leads me to believe i have somehow damaged the Mobo :/
My question to you all is, have i got any chance in hell of getting my phone back to life before Google expect me to send it back in their RMA service? I could really do with recovering the data that is on the phone which includes a lot of family holiday photos i hadnt backed up (stupid of me i know).
Also, does anyone know what that buzzing sound might have been? Ive tried searching everywhere on the net and had no luck and im getting pretty desperate now. ANy help at all is much appreciated.

I would also just like to state that im more than happy to reward anyone who helps me out significantly enough and manages to get my data back (or at least my phone visible on the PC so i can extract it).

I don't think data can be recovered. I don't know if I'm making any sense or not but if the eMMC chip is fine, then you can show it to a professional so that he could try to repair the motherboard (if it can be indeed done without wiping the data, lol). But the chances of that are slim to none.
Put it on a wall charger for an hour or so and try to boot it up. But I guess you've already tried that?
Apart from all this, It will be a miracle if google indeed accepted the RMA request since you've opened up the device, tried to swap the mobo and stuff.

I have already tried charging it for long periods of time but its fairly obvious to me now that the phone isnt charging at all. It was only when i placed an already charged battery in the phone that i got the buzzing noise from the Mobo and the phone started to get very hot (turned out it drained approximately 30% of the battery in about 10 minutes).
Im not too worried about them not accepting the RMA as i have had other friends request the RMA service after opening up their phone, and in one case completely replacing the screen themselves and never had a problem. Its just such a shame as ive kept the phone in such good condition to avoid this from happening
So far the symptoms are:
- Phone wont turn on or charge.
- New battery in the phone causes phone to heat up and drain battery very quickly as well as produce a rhythmic buzzing noise from the motherboard.
- Placing Motherboard in a new healthy Nexus 5 device causes the same issue.

Hmmm. Sad. The blow must have been pretty nasty then. Table corners can be quite dangerous.
Can't you get the motherboard repaired locally? It will surely void the warranty but if the photos and other data are so important to you, that's the only slim chance you've got.

Its really frustrating considering how well i have looked after it otherwise. Im also a little disappointed that the Spigen case didnt protect it better. The blow was nastier than i would have wanted but definitely not something that in my opinion should have broken the phone altogether :/
I can send the phone off to LG to repair it but this requires me sending the Phone to Sydney and waiting however long for them to possibly come back and tell me it cant be repaired.
My plan now is to wait for my new device to come through from the RMA service and then when i package up my old phone to send it back im going to leave a note explaining that whoever finds/deals with the phone, if they can recover my photos and videos and send them back to me on a USB i will reimburse them for it all as well as chucking in a $100 reward. I'll leave my name, number and email and hope that be some miracle it finds its way into the hands of someone willing to help.
In all honesty though what are my chances of that actually working :/

Should look into photo syncing or cloud storage lol. :silly: If I have anything that's important to me, I don't keep it only on my phone, I either move it off or backup/sync it into the cloud.

Chances of them recovering your photos, putting it in an USB stick and couriering it to you seem thin.Never seen such a thing happening
As stated in the post above me, I think you should move on and treat this as "lesson learned". I backup all my things to my computer over wifi using FolderSync and the important ones go to my dropbox via foldersync. You can even schedule it to make your custom backup every night/week/month and so on.
