Need more Ram for my Captivate - General Questions and Answers

Any one clue me in on how to get Ram speeds upwards of 1000 on the Antutu benchmarks? Ive heard of 1100. Thanks

I'm guessing you're looking at overclocking/volting/somethinglikethat. I have no what you'd have to do to overclock RAM on a phone or how quickly that would go badly thanks to lack of active cooling.

if you mean u wana more ram >>>> i think you need new kernel modified

Well, since posting this I discovered custom kernels built for my Captivate that also have kernel mods that can be downloaded to adjust live voltage settings etc. N's tools does it as well with the stock kernel at times with root. Thanks for the replies!

[Q] 1000 max on oc'd kernels any fix? please help

so i just bought this phone from a friend, he had it rooted when i bought it, seems every kernel i try the max is always at 1000 instead of higher options and my governor scaling does not let me choose any options as well, tried 2 different kernels and same for both any ideas how to fix, would be greatly appreciated

Have you tried pimpmycpu? For some reason set CPU doesn't work

Buy and use pimp my cpu.
Set cpu doesn't seem to work with this phone for now for what ever reason.
Sent from my G2x running Bionix 2 with the power of Trinity.
There is a free version of pimp my cpu somewhere I here.
The developer of that app post it somewhere else I this forums. Is ok to download it from this forums for free.

I tryed it once and didn't seem to work it didn't have any goveners to choose from either.or maybe I just ain't used to it ill try again thanks for the reply.I thought maybe he messed something up in the root process
Probably the dual core is messing with setcpu and it needs an update for it to work properly. I could be wrong but that's my guess. Are u using a custom rom that allows for oc? Cm7 has a setting for it so no need for an app to control it

governor
I tryed pimp my CPU.seams to overclock but governor has no choices is it just me or is everyone's like that?
tegra2 controls the governers so they dont give you the option to change as of yet, that is untill one of our genious devs figures a way around that as well.
I see thanks for letting me know that. thought something was wrong on my end

[Q] Questions About [TouchWiz][6.05.11] OTB-Reloaded Kernel

I have a question about this kernel, i have it installed on the phone and flashed on it, it said in the post from nemesis2all that there was a Battery hack, i was curious how to use it, i currently have settings at Min=400 max=1300 all settings undervolted 50mV, how good are these settings? and would this be the optimal settings for performance and battery life? or anyone have a better setup that would help. seem to be getting high 1700 quadrant scores with how it is now.
In order to get the best battery life you would not want your phone over clocked, I run otb kernel as well and just uv the stock setting starting at 50 for the 1000, and progressively stepping down to negative 100. Anyways I run, 1000 -50, 800 and 600 -75, 400 200 & 100 at -100 and I have great battery life even with heavy usage and playing memory intensive games, paradise island, drag racing, pocket soccer. Unless your phone is laggy after you enable lagfix I think overclocking is probably just killing your battery faster the only roms I used light oc' ing for was phoenix and miuiwiz, where both launchers seemed to get some lag after a long days use
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
The other school of thought on battery life is, if you overclock the processor, it will finish the task faster and return to a lower power idle state sooner.
well also i used SuperOneClick to root the phone, is rageagainstthecage a good root to use? or are there better ones out there? also sometimes this kernel like to freeze at start up and i have to re flash it. im pretty sure this isnt supposed to happen. any help or advise is greatly appreciated
I've had issues with OTB kernals before. Your problem could be the kernel, but I see you oc'd it to 1300. That too could be causing it. Each phone reacts differently to kernels and oc/uv.

Are we able to still use any touchwiz kernal from ec10 on the new heintz 57 ee19 updated rom?
Well I re-flashed it and used same ovetclock just lower volts and am pulling a average 2100 quadrant score. Don't know if it means much but no lock ups anymore

This could just be my stupidity, but if you can flash kernels then you have a custom recovery, right? What's the point of using super one click? Wouldn't having the recovery and the ability to change kernels, etc mean your already rooted? Just seems redundant, I never used a rooting app and still use all the root only apps....

Kinda. The only way to flash a kernel is with a custom recovery but you don't necessarily have to be rooted to do that. EE19 is not rooted so that's why you need SOC if you want to root. Rooting opens up a lot of options for apps and moving and copying system files but isn't required for Roms/Kernels.
Anyone have any other general good ideas or cool tricks to do to this phone?

Currently, im doing a bit of testing with the new phoenix 1.1 rom.
This baby can handle some crazy undervolting.
Currently:
1000 : -100
800 : - 100
600: -100
400: -100
200: -150
Going to see what i can get this down to...a bit more tweaking i bet the battery life can get phenomenal.
Try opening and closing the camera a few times in a row and see if it freezes. Or try a quad test, those are usually the things that will cause issues with too much under volting.

Already ahead of you. Up to:
1000 : -100
800 : - 100
600: -100
400: -150
200: -175
Usually ill run 4 quadrant tests and if it passes that it should be stable. Currently ran a 2187 is that a good score for 1.4ghz?

also when using the OTB kernal what are safe settings to use? ive been running it at 1400Mhz but it lockes up and geeps giving me force close things on start up and never stops and i have to reflash to stock and start over? im assuming this isnt typical, can any one help out?
Actually that's probably pretty typical for an OC that high. I know I can't run it that high without lockups. From what I see in the original thread, most people don't run above 1300 most of the time.

at the risk of offending you, I would not recommend setting your phone to 2ghz..I can assure you nothing great in the long term is going to happen. As for kernels give LordClockan and TalonAce a glance, I'm not 100% sure if they are 2ghz kernels but its a good jumping off point
2ghz will fry your CPU. Maybe not initially buy your phone will definitely fail prematurely. The only reasons other people do it is because they can and they probably have a newer phone for their daily. Even just overclocking a little bit can have a negative impact but not as drastic. If you insist on overclocking I wouldnt exceed 1.4.
With that said there are several Aosp kernels that will allow you to push it to the limit. Just search the dev forum.
Overclocking your cpu will not hurt it unless its running hotter than the cooling system can handle. It will cause lock ups and failure to boot. If you start overvolting it, you WILL cause premature damage to the chip itself. Optimum overclock has always been 10-20% increase for any processor. Personally id rather underclock and undervolt a little, runs cooler and less power drain.
gizmoe is right, 2ghz is a 'just cuz i can' overclock. it wont run stable at that level. its like the 8ghz overclocks you see on the intel processors using LN2 cooling lol.
2ghz is bad.
I ran my inspire at 2ghz and besides the battery practically counting down the phones was heating up and that was maybe 15 minutes. Definitely not a goods idea.
Thank you for the input and info guys.
I could over clock and undervolt on a past captivate. Is there any app you would recommended for the inspire on cm7 to do this?

Setcpu use to be the go to app but many found it to lag after waking the phone. Many have now moved on to daemon controller. From the looks of it you're using CM7 which has the function built in..I believe its menu > settings > CM settings > performance...or something like that...don't check set on boot until you know how much OC your phone can candle. If you like CM, take a look at Absolution by the Collective. They have scripts written for custom profiles for OC and UVing.

I've clocked to 2ghz a few times just to get a crazy quadrant score but that's about it. I usually keep mine somewhere in the 900mhz range with a little lite uv'ing and found that to be plenty.
2ghz can definitely be bad for your cpu..... Like to much bacon can be bad for your arteries.....

Isn't this the same if we lower our frequency to minimum when the screen goes off. I am sure only cpu0 is used if its below 750mhz or so.

The G2x has no use for these quirks. Nvidia has some special battery saving things in the phone. That's why our phone does not use CPU governors. Just use the phone as is. You can over clock but don't set CPU profiles. The nvidia chip does everything itself.

Thanks for the info, I never knew that, coming from other Android phones. I was wondering why no kernel had CPU governor options enabled.

sorry man but the apk was takin down for a bit.. somthing about the PID making the app shutdown after being off for so long. script still works, and is recommended for now. ill post when apk is back up
thx also what are the permissions for the script cause im using root explorer
which kernels do this already?
I am pretty sure that I was running on only one core when on Trinity ELP when setting it at 750 MHz and lower. Also, the newer Faux 050b6 through 050b9 go to a single core limited to no more than 503 MHz whenever the screen is off.
Is anyone aware if the Trinity T15 shuts down the second core ever?
How about the stock LG or standard CM kernel?
How about Faux's kernels for stock based ROM's? I have recently been on Kwes and Buru stock 2.3.4 ROM's using Faux 014b2 at stock voltage. If I keep the MHz low, I swear my battery performance is better than it ever was using undervolted ELP on CM7 based ROM's.
I just did 35 hours :victory: of moderate usage (about 2 hours talk, 3 hours wifi web, 1 hour text) and still had 45% left in the tank! - With the stock battery that's nearly a year old now...:good:

How to overclock

Hi guys i can someone tell me if can overclock?
Just tell what to do...I want to overclock it to play heavy games like mc4 and nova without much lag
I have the rom from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1629307
-___- It's simple. Download any of apps like those for example; AnyCPU, No-Frills CPU Control and Voltage Control. But the problem is actually in GPU service; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2191468 but you must have both root and CWM recovery (CWMR is to back up your firmware and user data).
EDIT: With this GPU tweak and GPU video tweaks in build.prop, Minecraft is pretty smooth.

thanks!!! i already did the gpu tweaks from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2191468
now i'm going to install the apps you said but if i change kernel won't i have better results?
but i don't know what kernel to use...
I hope i was clear i'm portuguese
Of course u need to flash a kernel that supports over clocking. And then use set cpu to tweak

Can you recommend me one ?
For the starter, if you are on the CyanogenMod 10 Jelly Beans port and its derivatives, iodak kernel for one. At full throttle, it roars by at 1.3 GHz but you may try undervolt it a bit (due to CPU heats) - mine's at 1.25 V at 1.3 GHz so go for 1.275 V for better chance.

I'm on stock gingerbread...any advices?
Ah, I see. I will look - even though the development on Gingerbread ROM have slowed down a bit.
EDIT: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23629242 - even though this kernel is discontinued, it's good. I used this one before I decided to ditch Gingerbread for Jelly Beans (due to better VSync service required by some games but I personally think you will do fine with Gingerbread though. And note this kernel's maximum CPU frequency support - 1.4 GHz.)
