So, would it be possible for us to have some devs porting a building ubuntu phone for the GS3 on verizon?
I don't think the source code has been released by Canonical yet so it is a no for now.
i am pretty much sure ubuntu would come for gs3...if not they will build it and release it ..its still in development stage
This is totally within the realm of possibilities, and I for one am stoked. It's still in development, but as I understand it, they are adding support for android drivers, so if hardware works with android, it will work with ubuntu.
Ubuntu
Not sure if you are talking natively or running as an "app".
But you can already run Ubuntu on your SGS3.
It runs as an "app", meaning that it still uses the Android OS as the Hypervisor and you"remote" into the Ubuntu session.
Works pretty well though.
But not an Ubuntu phone.

I'm pretty sure they are adding android hardware support to the actual mobile OS, the idea being able to run Ubuntu with a stock image. If that's not the case, I'm selling my GS3 for the Ubuntu phone, don't care if its a downgrade the new mobile platform seems to one up android conventionality.

This has been an intriguing development. As a Linux user, the only really integration that may be possible will be incredible. Can't wait to see this on the GS3!

i wonder how that would be like!
It probably won't come for any CDMA phones any time soon. Verizon is all CDMA. Ubuntu phone OS won't officially support CDMA I don't believe.

Will it be possible to dual boot Ubuntu and android?

Dual boot would be amazing.

I'm curious as to whether or not this could be run in Android much like desktop Ubuntu can be run in an emulator for android. It would certainly be a quick fix for mobile data.

As most of you might know it is possible to install ubuntu on phones like the nexus one and the X10. But ubuntu isn' t really usefull in the way it is now (I mean that it isn't usefull on phones). So I thought it should be possible to customize ubuntu for phones so it becomes more touchfriendly, faster etc. (like a UI similar to the netbook version of Ubuntu, with lxde as desktop environment and replacing big programs which use a lot of memory for lighter alternatives). Than ubuntu might actually become really usefull for phones.
What do you guys think? And is there anyone who would like to help creating this customized ubuntu-version?

I think that would be awesome! I'm not really a developer but I'm great at beta testing!

Are you asking members to help you in creating this OS?
Or are you asking if someone would create this OS?
Helping to create although I'm new to this I think it is interesting to learn about. It's not like I'm new to ubuntu and stuff, but I'm new to customizing it for phones.

I would love this for the incredible. 10.10 comes out on October the 10th including the ARM version so I don't know if you want to wait for that plus I don't know what kernels support loop devices. Other problems are drivers and the touch input/onscreen keyboard.
Anything to untether us from Google!
What's wrong with just removing GNOME and installng LXDE? Lol it's not really that hard if you know how to use aptitude.
Ok since xrecovery had been released, we can pick up the work again. we need to figure out how we can make it flashable for xrecovery i think

I've never liked Ubuntu honestly but since all the "testing" is done on Ubuntu I've spent my time building between Ubuntu and Fedora.
Just wondering who else builds on other distros besides Ubuntu... and to another extent: what differences/difficulties have you had?
I build on Fedora Core 13, I did not find it to be difficult at all.

you can build on anything if you get the right packages. #1 reason people build on Ubuntu is because that's what is officially supported by Google and the instructions are written for it. Plus Ubuntu is the most "friendly" user experience.
I know R4INS builds on Suse.
I've been tempted to switch over to Suse myself and try it.
I'm very familiar about why ppl use Ubuntu. I touched upon it in first post but this is more of curiosity question. I've used SUSE (before android days) as well but found it to get very slow and bloated after a while.

Not sure about the old suse.. but the current version uses about half the resources of Ubuntu. A 6 hr build on Ubuntu will usually take 2 hrs on the same machine running suse.
Suse is DEFINITELY not weighed down by bloat... Ubuntu on the other hand
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2
Yes I am referring an older version of suse. Opensuse 10 or 11 if I remember correctly. I would hope in the newer ones they would improve... it was kinda known issue then. That's really significant difference in build times.

Didn't we have a *nix loader available for us a year or two ago? Though I remembered seeing posts on that, but the links were dead by the time I decided to kill my phone.
Keep an eye on this.
THIS
Ubuntu stated that the OS works better on multi-core devices. We can still try to see if it works...
http://www.ubuntu.com/devices/android
Seeing what it did to some of the nexus 4 peoples phone I think it's a crap shot and very risky. There is a git that just got his nexus two days ago and already bricked out from flashing a alpha build of Ubuntu mobile.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Yeah I messed around with it yesterday on my galaxy nexus. It's still in the very beginning of alpha stages in my opinion.
But there were allot of people having trouble going back to android afterwards on the galaxy nexus forums but no bricks. It's a cool idea but I think it needs some time to mature like android did.

Since Ubuntu is using CM as source I'd say it's possible. They seem to be optimizing it towards duel core(possibly quad by the time it's fully released) devices though. So why it should be portable to this phone the experience may be less the stellar. Think of running a new PC game on a three year old PC and you get the idea.

I hear it builds just like CM. A guy is building it for the Rocket as we speak. Or trying to. It's still so early in the development phase that even getting it to boot will be a challenge in and of itself. But you know the deal. You build it I'll log it. I'll have to look into what package would be needed to log it. lol
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Porting
since they use cm as a base I don't see why it wouldn't since Erik got cm10.1 to work on this device.

That link looks strangely familiar. Maybe cause I posted it yesterday. lol See post 3.
I saw that on the galaxy nexus forums today I never looked at your link. oops

The biggest hurdle from what I seen posted is the transition of VM between android and Ubuntu. For the most part I think the issues with building and actually getting it to boot is the different Vm the two OS's use.
I wanna post the link just to say that I didn't see it on this thread twice already but here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Porting
. It looks intricate but it's not really different from porting a new rom . I can't wait to tinker with this...
Looks like somebody ported it the the original galaxy s

Although it looks pretty cool, the only thing I use Ubuntu for is for Eclipse and I wouldn't program Java in a phone. If it's on a Nexus 7 (other tablets too) then OK, but why would anyone want Ubuntu on their phones? Serious, not hating.
Being able to run both Ubuntu apps and Android would be fun.
Is it possible to build iOS apps on a PC? If so, how? Also, I have a old 3GS that was giving to me, will this be good enough to test on?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
You can't, Xcode are avaitable only for OS X. But check OSx86 Project.
OSx86 also works. But it's recommended that you should buy a MAC instead of OSx86 :good:

Want to start customing roms and maybe build from source. What is a good fast but not to involved build for android, I hnow there are several methods and I leaning towards linux mint. But what else do I need to get started?
Sent from my N861 using Tapatalk 4
There is really no such thing as not to involved when it comes to building first you need to set up a Linux distro on your computer 64 bit at least 4gig of ram and around 100 gig of HDD then look at xda university or search how to set up your enviorment

OK...so I have to get my hands dirty, will eclipse run in linux or do I even need eclipse?
Sent from my N861 using Tapatalk 4
I have 64bit and can dedicate about 100g for linux.I have android kitchen up and running but was a little disappointed with the results considering all the work I done installing cygwin and all the dependiaces because you are basically arranging a few files of someone else hard work.
