Does the Tab 2 10.1 play 720p or 1080p .mkv rips flawlessly? - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does the device play .mkv videos smoothly?
I'm thinking of getting the device for video playback, just want something which can play my collection of videos.

Well all I know is that i bought mine and installed micro 16gb card copy my movies over to it and used the video player that came with it and played them all blueray.avi as well as 3or 4 mp4 type. maybe some work and others don't but on my (model# GT-P5113, Android 4.1.1, Kernel 3.0.3-523998 it does) i have no problems my problem was with the Keybroad (I could not see what i was typeing, so i had to buy myself a sepert keybrosd) but anyway i hope every thing goes well for you

How about streaming them on Dual band?

My Tab 2 5113 with 4.2.2 ota update unrooted plays everything 100% flawless. I have played some 720p content with no issues but 95% of all my vids (.mkv .h264 .mp4 avi xvid divx) it doesn't matter it all has played without issue. This includes when on 4.0.4 and 4.1.1 too. I only use MXPlayer.
As far as Dual band... my Tab 2 5113 won't see the 5ghz band from my router so i doubt it has that radio.

What happened to ur device .? My device is perfectly handling 720p and 1080p . Only problem with the stock video player is it can't handle dts encoded audio (samsung removed it because of the copyright issues)) but mx player with custom codec can play dts files

Why are people complaining about not being able to play files? Please don't reply to this thread if that's the case. You can download players and codecs seperately. I assume the people who answered the wirelessly streaming question used a player or codec combination, anyone care to specify what hardware/software codec they used?
I use vplayer for large buffers and mxplayer for smaller buffers.
Dice sucks and is overrated.

Ummm As i stated before, mine does playback 720p and 1080p flawlessly. I have over 4TB of movies and TV shows from multiple sources and formats, (mp4, MKV container .h264 you name it) not a one is ever out of sync with audio, video and subs even if i skip ahead or back. So i'm sorry if yours can't. All I'm using is MXplayer with the MX player codec.(arm v7)
Also you do know that MKV is a container not a video format per se correct?

Eric are you streaming these? Wirelessly? What is your wifi connection like, what router are you using? Are you overclocking your tab by any chance?
I've been ambiguous about buying this thing for like a week now. Sigh. Inconsistent answers and just some straight up stupid answers about this.

Since 1080 is a complete waste on any hand held device save yourself the drain on battery and the bandwidth of downloading 1080. The eye cant tell the difference between 1080 and 720 on small devices held less then a foot or two from your face.

Like I said I'm sorry your tab has issues with playback. But my tab running stock 4.2.2 ota has no compression issues, plays without hiccups and all sound and subtitles are always in sync even skipping forward or back. This is files on my pc. It also steams 1080p slingbox content to my tab 2 via the slingplayer app for 3+ hours without a single hiccup while I watched the eagles-redskins game on Monday night.
So again sorry your having issues but don't tell me mine is having flawed playback. In other words speak for yourself.

Then you have a jacked up tab 2 lol sorry about your luck bro. Should have changed it out. deal with it i guess.

Bah I have a quadcore note 2 and it has trouble on true 1080 playback. I have to switch to sw decoding when they get to large. I also have the tab 2 and it has trouble on true 1080 maybe not a fake 1 1/2 gig 1080 rip but a real 1080 flick will stop that tab in its tracks. Again 1080 just isnt worth the trouble on handhelds there is no difference between 720 and 1080 on that tab. So why make it struggle to playback anyways. To each there own but it really is a waste.

That's why I'm thinking to myself too...use my laptop (doesn't have dual band wifi) for it...chances are a miniaturized 'micro' dual band USB adapter will be out sooner and cheaper for my laptop than this tablet.
Use the tablet for 720, Youtube, Internet and E-book reading

[Q] How can I watch 720p mkv video on Inspire 4G??

Wondering if anyone has a solution here, AVI and MKV have issues playing. The MKVs are 720p HD tv shows, and the audio is great, but the video is choppy\slow-mo. Has anyone managed to find a player or a method to resolve this? I know this has been discussed in other forums, but related to different phones, so curious if there's a specific fix to this phone, or if a 720p is just too much for the Inspire 4G to handle. I wouldn't think so since last year's iPhone 3G and 3GS and 4 can handle it just fine.... I'm thinking something is wrong or I'm using the wrong app.
I don't think the stock video player can do it, so you'll have to try some third party apps like VPlayer, RockPlayer, and Act 1. Let us know if any of those three get the job done. I'm curious too. Otherwise we may need to convert videos.

VPlayer - Same
RockPlayer - Same
Act 1 - Same
None of these seem to work. I wonder if it's the way my videos are encoded? I sure hope not, because all the MKV files I download from the torrents of tv shows I miss are formatted the same way. They always played fine on iPhone
Anyone else experience this issue and find a resolution?
Thanks!

Oh really? I don't see any Class 6 or higher on Amazon. Mine is a class 4. Can the Inspire 4G even benefit from class 6? I'm able to watch them off the memory card on my class 4 when plugged into my computer just fine.
the desire hd can support all class cards including class 10, so i cant see why the inspire cant either.
Yea class 4 should be ok i would think? Have you tried different size files?
Is anybody else having trouble like this ?

I have 2 inspire 4g devices, and have tried both a Class 2 and a Class 4 card. I ordered a Class 10 from Amazon (they only had up to 16gb, not the 32GB like my class 4), so I'll report back tomorrow when it arrives.
The file I'm using is a 1.09GB MKV file.
I have yet to purchase the Inspire and this problem is one of the reasons that I am waiting. FWIW I have read many complaints from users having this problem.
I have the same issue
It happens on G1, Streak and Inspire. However, cheap Archos doesn't this issue. Isn't that ironic? I was trying to copy the Archos player but no success...

Clearly it's either the way my video is encoded, or the lack of proper decoder on the android. I am at the end of my rope trying to resolve. I didn't like my iPhone because it's incompatibilities, and everyone with Android said "get an Android cause it'll decode anything" ... lol... wonder if we'll ever have a solution to decode a mkv properly.
You do realize that your phone is only capable of show video resolution up to 400p? MKV is mostly used for HD rips because it ends up having the best quality after compression, but your phone is not HD in the sense that it is over a standard definition television vertical wise (watching it in wide screen format).
Anything bigger will have to be scaled down by the player, sucking up battery life and you wont notice a quality difference. Aside from that, forcing your device to play something higher res will suck the battery life as well because it will be more intensive on the cpu. Why dont you just use xvid rips in avi format? Everything that's ripped in mkv is always ripped in xvid as well.

Yeah, the processing power is certainly there so I guess it's just an issue of improper codec execution :-(
Not sure on a player to watch them on android. I would just go through the top ones on the market place and do trial and error
I dont have a computer with osx on it currently, but VLC (the PC/OSX version) does convert file formats as well and it's free.

Yeah none worked. I think it's just the issue of the MKV file. They don't work on iPhone with any of the players either, I think it just takes more power and video processing to handle them.
Try xyflash, i used this on iphone. Android market has it also so i tried it. It plays 720p mkv bleach videos and sub titles work using mkv sub extractor. Not the best but it does the job i think
Did you guys try lower resolution files but coded in mkv?

I used to have an iPad (but sold it to get the xoom) and that was one of my main problems, not being able to play .mkv, but the VLC app worked perfectly for me, the only problem was that the iPad wasn't powerful enough to run a 720p or an 1080p .mkv file. Galaxy S has native Divx support and can play AVI and MKV through the built in video player. No need for any third party players. I doubt the Xoom will have divx certification, but it certainly should be able to decode 720P MKV files using a software solution through Rockplayer.

Lite version is but not the full version. The watermark on the top left can be pretty annoying.
It's been mentioned in other forums- DICE Player works very well! The dev mentions in the app description that Tegra 2 might have some glitches, but so far it's been able to play most mkvs i throw at it- even those that mobo and mx (and others) play with no sound!
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.inisoft.mediaplayer.trial&feature=more_from_developer
sadly tegra 2 is unable to fully decode HD using its hardware. dice so far has the smoothest frame rate in all the players out there, but it still lag at certain scenes where there is a lot of movement or fighting. hoping they be able to solve the problem.
anyway was wondering by increasing the processing speed of the tegra 2, will it be able to process mkv better?

It has nothing to do with Tegra 2. Samsung's Galaxy S series are using Hummingbird and can fully decode 720p. It's all software and codecs.
You could always just convert your move to mp4, I've done it to loads of HD movies (LOTR and such) and they run great, even streaming through to the TV via HDMI.

well mkv works the best in dice player atm. hopefully they can optimize it for tegra.
DICE Player is the answer to your problem concerning MKVs. Give it a try, the developer is VERY active on the XDA forums especially in the Transformer forum.
Converting something to another format is unacceptable in the hardware that we're getting. And honestly, it's a waste of time to convert. Just get DICE Player and you won't ever have to convert again.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16224858#
Go there. The developer is actively talking in that thread. Another new version was released today to fix some problems with subtitles and multiple audio streams in a single MKV. Honestly, it's the best player and well worth the $4US to the dev.
MX player is the best the guy above ^ is 100% right.

Hello, playing with my new toy. Have a DHD and quite experienced with rooting etc.
Im currently having some lag issues with mkv and or 720p or above movies. Tried mobo player and the normal one.

Also, hd video is really difficult for the Tegra 2 that barely handles 720p. You can have 1080p, and smooth, but it will most likely need to be re-encoded so that the hardware will like it... you might want to try to overclock, often that solves the issue, even if not always.
If you go for the re-encode way, use h264 basic profile, that's the biggest deal.
Thats really a bummer since i thought the tegra 2 is well capable to display atleast 720p mkv videos having a hd screen. Is it the tegra Architektur which doesnt play nicely with hd mkv material or just software related?

Really? The mkv videos I downloaded the other day works just fine.. but I guess it could be because I'm overclocking? I mean, it was 720 p and it was working way smoooth with Mobo so I don't know where your complaints come frmo..
It has to do with the type of encoding. You can get 1080p to play if you encode it right
just tried a 720p clip and it does play smoothly with HW encoding but can not play the sound back. Is it because of the sound track being dts 7.1 ch?
How long takes to convert a video with handbrake?

Don't reencode the videos. Use a MKV -> MP4 Tool to reencode the audiostream to aac. It's way faster.
Have a look at my tests http://painfullyrandom.blogspot.com/2011/08/testing-android-video-decoding.html and/or search here on XDA for Tegra hd video. Sadly it's not the best choice for video play... It works but it's far from optimal.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. Try Diceplayer. The only reason it won't playback ANY file well, is because the bit-rate is too high for Tegra 2. All the videos I download are 720P h264 and it plays them just fine. The only time it struggles is when there is fast panning (which results in a higher bitrate if it's a variable bitrate). All things said, I have no issues playing any videos, even those with 7.1 channel audio.
Also, use the search function. This is discussed at length in a few other threads in the transformer forums. I think it was specifically in the Themes/Apps forum.

yes, Dice Player is the best so far. Playing videos is a hit / miss with the rest of the free players...

same here but the audio is "only" AC3 5.1 the video is super smooth but there is no sound.
I don't know where you get your files, but I'm almost sure I don't want to go to that site.
Example:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/420077/Indiana Jones 4_HD 1080base.mp4
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/420077/Indiana Jones 4_HD 720main.mp4
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/420077/Indiana Jones 4_HD 480high.mp4
those are a few seconds from the trailer of Indiana Jones and the crystal skull grabbed from the PSN "some time" ago. Play them at 1ghz on the Transformer with Dice (or whatever you want), and see what works well... I encoded this stuff in a way that shows my point. Same bitrate for all of them.
The original file is main profile, full hd and slightly higher bitrate. Still plays at 1ghz.
Keep in mind that if you make the file hard to decode, the size could be quite small, once I've watched a reasonably good dvd rip that was 250mb. That's the whole point of h264 vs divx, same quality, smaller file. Or same size better quality, depending on your point of view
I just tried the dice player and it plays the test file without problems being 720p mkv. I think Asus should had intergrated such a mdiaplayer by default

Blurry pixel screen when watching HD anime

Hello,
I'm new on this forum, so I will shortly introduce myself: My name is Ruben, I live in the Netherlands and I just bought a TF300t a week ago. Please, excuse me if I make some grammar mistakes.
I've got this weird problem: when I am watching my (downloaded) anime series, I sometimes get a blurry screen. This is mostly with dark colors, but sometimes with light colors too. There is no sign of any laggs. The "blurry pixels" just come and go. This might help you:
Using: MX player
Playing: HD anime (720p/1080p)
When does it occur: In H/W+ and H/W decoder enabled.
Let me tell you this, when I'm using S/W decoder, it's perfect. No blurry pixels but the problem then is that it is lagging.
I've tried a few other players, but neither of them worked. Just some little differences.
I've tried to change some settings in the MX player, but nothing worked out for me, unfortunately.
Watch the thumbnails for some examples.
I hope you can help me with this. It's very unfortunate I can't fully enjoy the HD-feeling on my new tablet.
It's certainly the video itself.. Possibly A bad conversion.
Definitely nothing to do with the tf300. Try other video players, like VLC and check if there's still the blurry pixels you say.
If it still persists, it's the video which is the guilty

Well, it's with almost every video. Sw decoder works fibe. Is there a sollution for the lagg with sw decoder?
I am going to try VLC now.
VLC is working horrible. Cant even play a video. It's the beta in the Play Store.

Both Bs player and Mx player show the same problems. EXACTLY the same. So the blurry parts come exactly the same time, every time. So you are saying it's the video, if this is the case? So what can I do? Download better quality, or lower quality? It's pretty sad, because I download the episodes when they just aired so I can watch them immediatly. It's always very good quality (720p or 1080p) and perfect on my desktop and for everybody else who are downloading the same torrent, but not for my tablet? I don't get why it's the video...
If the S/W decoder worked without laggs I would be satisfied already... Too bad it laggs. It doesn't show these blurry parts.

I just sent you a private message. I'm not sure if you received it. My " sent folder " keeps telling me I didnt't sent anything to anyone.
I just tried 480p and the same video doesn't get blurry with 480p. But you can't possibly say I can't watch 1080p or even 720p with this tablet. Even my desktop which is way worse than the specs of this tablet can play 1080p anime series.

Try the hd anime files on a computer. I'm also certain it's the video file and not your device.

Nope, my desktop plays it smoothly. Strange, isn´t it? :s
Robgee789 tried the same video's on the same tablet as me, and didn't get this problem. It's so strange.
I just downloaded a non-anime movie: Harry.Potter.And.The.Deathly.Hallows.Part.2.2011.BluRay.720p.H26
It didn't show any signs of blurry frames in H/W+ decoder. So I guess it's only my anime video's. But then again, Robgee789's same tablet doesn't have any problems with this.
Is it my tablet, or some settings?
EDIT:
Harry Potter was a MP4 file, all of my anime series are .MKV
But, I tried a 720p .MKV movie (also Harry Potter) and everything went fine too. I'm not sure, but the resolution of this video says 1280 x 544 (so not 720p??) and my anime series say 1280 x 720. But then also I got one anime serie which I can play without problems (720p, 1280x720) while other series with the same 720p, 1280x720 resolution are blurry. And I'm talking about .MKV files. So where lies the difference?

It could be and most likely is the render that was used. If other formats are not giving issues my money is on it being the video file. I've already watched non HD movies and had the pixel faults. But, those same pixel faults were on my laptop as well.

But how can you explain this:
My tablet shows these blurry parts, but my desktop doesn't.
And above all, this:
Robgee789's tablet (also TF300t) doesn't have this problems with the exact same file (I sent him the download link in private message).
Is my tablet broken? Maybe a full reset is needed?

this may sound stupid but try changing the file to .avi, just change the name it will it may corrupt the data but it will be fine and see if that works

Didn't work. But hey, watch your private message please, I think I found "something". I can explain it here too after you confirmed me something.
Take a close look at this picture.
Green: These files can be watched flawlessly. Great!
Red: Every file gives a blurry screen. Mind the different subbers (People who give subtitles to the episodes, so different uploaders).
Yellow: This is why I think I get a blurry screen.
Blue: The files which are working are all from the same subber: "HorribleSubs"
I now want to confirm if you dowloaded files from "Commie" or from "Horrible Subs". I forgot the link I sent you. It could be I changed by accident the links because either Horrible Subs as well as Commie both do upload the same series. If you downloaded from Commie, you "SHOULD" get a blurry screen too. If you downloaded from Horrible Subs, you shouldn't.
Actually this problem is caused by both device and video
I'm assuming that that video is an .mkv right? and the size is below 200MB?
okay, mkv is famous among pirated videos, in this case Anime (I don't stream, just download)
furthermore to avoid large sized videos (300 and sometime 400MB in 720) people encode them whether it's hVEC, h.264 or h.265... and that's where decoders barge in.
and due to android devices having weak capabilities of processing graphical memory (except snapdragon 830, that **** is godlike) in any form, u get that fuzzy blurry output using hw dec and lag using sw dec.
I haven't solved this issue yet so I try to stick to 480p if available
Hi,
does the problem still exist?
Can you check your files with MediaInfo?
I would like to know if the Format is
[email protected] or High [email protected] or something.
Cheers
