This must be a dumb question because I'm having trouble finding an answer here or elsewhere.
Anyway, can someone explain the "Data Roaming" and "National Data Roaming" options on AOSP Roms.
Does disabling these options prevent the phone from connecting to Verizon Extended Network coverage? Thus, I should leave them on.
Or does enabling them lead to data roaming charges? Thus I should leave them off.
Thanks for any help!
I think national data roaming is where when you go to aa different state in the us and the covarge is bad and therefore allows you to piggy back on a different network.

I'm not sure that's quite right. If you go to the Verizon Wireless coverage map you can identify areas of extended network coverage. From what I understand, those are areas where Verizon has an agreement to use signal from other carrier towers. If that's the roaming that's referred to, then there is no additional charge and the options should be checked.
I'm still not quite clear on why there are two options. I suppose national data roaming prevents roaming in Canada or Mexico where charges would apply. Whereas if you just had Data Roaming checked you could incur those charges. I don't know what might happen if both are checked.

If you go to settings>mobile networks >data roaming it has a place to check it.... what does this actually do? I dont think roaming has not been free for at least five years.. so should this be checked to allow for the best possible cell service?

It means you will allow data roaming, i.e. you're willing to pay $$$ for your data. The default is unchecked which means your phone will not use any cell data when it is roaming.
I travel to Canada a bunch and never use data because of the price. I'll normally find a hotspot and use that. On my Droid Incredible, I just left never enabled Data Roaming...and never had any issues.
The other day with my thunderbolt... I turned on my phone and it just started downloading emails and such. I tried changing the Data Roaming setting back and forth and it seems to do nothing.
Anyone experience this?
I'm obivously going to call Verizon when I get my bill because I'm not paying a dime for the roaming data.
Smart phones get unlimited data roaming...

Not INTERNATIONALLY they dont!
I would highly recommend calling them before you get your bill. Notify them of the problem as soon as possible and I don't see how they could hold you liable for the charges. If you hold back, it could be interpreted as an attempt to get free roaming data.
Oh ... and until they fix it, you could toggle mobile data entirely while you're in Canada.

I've tried several prl's on my shift running cm7 nightlies since 179 or so. I know the device is roaming after seeing my data usage, which scares the poop out of me that sprint is going to axe me.
Here's the problem. When I know I'm roaming the system (cm7) shows my service as sprint, the signal looks the same (no R or any other indicator of roaming), and speedtests etc show sprint. I saw somewhere that I could dial *2 or some code and tell the difference by the voice commands.
Is there any way to make cm7 show when I'm roaming or the name of the roaming provider? Should it be showing verizon as the provider or at least and R on the signal or data indicator?
I know the gsm phones show which provider you are currently connected to. This may just be a cdma thing.

There is a setting for monitoring roaming.
I thought Sprint had unlimited free roaming?
You must live in bumble **** if you are seeing the "roaming" notification.
BTW you want to be using the latest radio, prl and profile.

Sprint has mediocre service here. Verizon is king in this area. The prl's I'm testing now are sprintverizon and verizonsprint. The one that ran my roaming off the charts was 00001. Its a verizon prl though, so its expected. All these are on the hero forum. I know I could get more info on the prl's there, but my issue involves the shift specificly so I was hoping someone here may know.
The prl I'm running at this moment is verizonsprint. Its default signal is verizon and if verizon signals aren't found it roams on sprint. If I read the thread correctly. Right now my signal and data indicators are normal. No R or any other indication of roaming and displays sprint.
Like I said, even on the verizon prl, it displayed sprint and no indication of roaming.
I don't live in bumfukt, but there is a community near here named egypt.
Also... on the unlimited roaming. Best to call it psuedo-unlimited. They still have constraints. Actually, one of the persons on the hero thread that helps mod these prls got a notice from sprint that they were dropping him. So, in lighter news, want out of a sprint contract.... a prl change and massive data transfer could possibly assist in getting an early termination!

Not quite. Sprint has unlimited roaming on Voice calls if you have the Unlimited Everything plan. If you have Everything Data when you roam on Voice calls minutes are deducted from your land line minutes. As for Data, if you use less then 2Gb of data a month on Sprint's network you have a 100mb roaming cap and a 300mb roaming cap if you use more then 2Gb. That's why if you're going to be roaming a lot its better to disable data roaming and rely on WiFi for data.
Hi Xda, i was just wondering about data roaming for my carrier with the G2x.
I am using a network called Videotron (it's in Canada). The latest nightlies automatically fixed my apn settings, but I am worried about roaming charges.
I recently left my city, but I did not have national or international data roaming checked. Apparently, my carrier charges for roaming data, but the phone never stopped giving me data during my trip. I know i wasn't in my "zone" (because all calls were long distance), but it just worries me that data was working.
Is it possible that CM7 couldn't detect videotron's roaming "locations/profiles", and allowed me to have data?
I'm just worried in case i have additional charges (they charge 2$/MB of roaming!!!!)
Thanks in advance
Go easy on me as ive never taken my mobile on holiday before.
So I'm from the UK, and flying to Orlando Florida on 6th august, with partner.
I will be wanting to use my phone to call my girlfriend in case we get lost, so I'll be phoning my provider to sort that out..
But as I believe you now use an app to plan your day at disneyland, in which I'll require data enabled?
Is it normal to use your data when abroad, and I'll be fine with regards to data roaming if its unchecked in the settings? I'm terrified of being charged £££ when I get back..
If you switch off Roaming in the Data settings you will not get an internet connection, unless of course you use WiFi.
If you're with Three network, you can actually use your phone in the USA with no extra costs, even your data.

If not already with 3 it would be too late for the original poster join up as they require customers to be with them for 30 days before they can use the free roaming. Also if they are with 3 data roaming will be disabled by default so they need to phone them and get it enabled.
In general the rules for roaming data vary so much by provider and contract that it is impossible to give much advice beyond check what your contract says.
