Splashtop Gamepad THD - Suffocates router, doesn't play back fast enough - Transformer TF300T Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys.
Having some issues with splashtop gamepad THD
I was using it to play DMC and watch videos but it doesn't play back fast enough and everyone else in my house said they couldn't even load a web page due to the bandwidth being suffocated.
Any ideas?
Router is Thompson TD-W8960N and isn't slow by any means.

I tried to google the specs for that model router. With no luck. So I could be specific on things that may help. So I am going to generalize pretty much. Trying a shotgun approach. (I have no clue what the specs on your unit are.)
Is- Everyone on wireless? If yes, you could be swamping the radio.
If everyone is on wireless, tune the router's QoS. See if that corrects it.
For example: in Cisco Residential (stock) firmware. It will be located in Applications and Gaming. Open source firmwares will be similar or easy to locate.
If others are on wired connections.
Do they experience slowdowns while browsing LAN. If they are still experiencing bottlenecks while you are doing your thing. While accessing the LAN, not WAN. It could mean you are swamping the RAM in the unit. Basically, you are using all the appliance's RAM. This is a common issue with low RAM units and torrents. Typically the router CPU can keep up, but the data passing through, is using up all the RAM. Creating slowdowns for every other device connected.
Next in the same vien as running out or RAM. Is the unit is running out of bandwidth. Unless the router is a dual radio. There is limited resources for wireless. Even though it may say 300mb/s. good luck actually getting that. If your tablet is using all the bandwidth, there is nothing left for anyone else.
If you do have a second radio. Keep the tablet on one radio, and everyone else connecting the unused radio.
Most of this also applies to the laggy video you mentioned.
Figuring out network issues can be tough. I hope me generalizing helps a little bit.

It's none of that. It's the fact that splashtop uses 250 kb/s while playing a game and suffocates the bandwidth.
Bad app is bad.

250kb/s is really little bandwidth for what its doing, maybe its your expectations that have some problems?
you cant run a remote high res virtual desktop on a 56k modem.

Even with B type bandwidth, it should be able to easily work with a 250kb/s overhead. Considering that 801.11g gets an average of 22Mb/s, (or 2.7MB/s.) Even with the overhead of 250kb/s considered. SD content should flow easily. Larger streams (720/1080) will overload the radio and make everyone suffer. Even a single user. A 300mbps (or greater,) radio is best for HD streams.

Slingplayer issue!

Ok ive had to purchase this app THREE times so I have some experience with it (iPhone,iPad,and Android). My issue is..constant freezing, no matter what channel (HD and regular) or what settings (Standard or High quality). I have more then enough dl speeds etc for it to work flawlessly, but on 3G,LTE and WiFi, it freezes within 20 seconds of starting up. I have reconfigured my router for manual setup according to the video guide again but it still wont play in a usable manner unless I like looking at the static picture with voices in the background lol.
Anyone else use this app that has it running fluidly?
When I had my Thunderbolt, it didn't matter what I was using (3G,LTE, Wifi), the picture would always stutter about and freeze up for a good while, maybe sometimes even up to two minutes when I started using it.. After those initial stutters and freeze ups, though, it would always play without a hitch..
I know it doesn't really help, but just my experience with it.
ugh yeah mines consistant. Even over WiFi it freezes so its frustrating
Hmm, the only things I can really think of would be:
New ethernet cord between the router and the slingbox?
New cable cord (Probably not, but hey it could work)
orrrr.....
maybe the cords from the slingbox to the cable/dish receiver are bad?
I had the issue too and I found the problem was in the slingbox itself. A capacitor had gone bad and I had to swap it out. Look for a bulging capacitor. Here is a good guide:

Gaming over Splashtop/VNC?

Just wondering if it's doable. Obviously some games would lend themselves better to it than others, and I'm sure online gaming is out of the question.
Still, it intrigues me. So does anyone have any experiences?
tried playing skyrim over Splashtop. was funky. cant see anything if i run or get the horse to gallop. and i had the worst luck... an elder dragon popped up and pwned my ass to oblivion
Why do you think that was? Was it network related (Were you playing it on a local network or was it over the internet?) or do you think the speed of the tablet was what was holding it back.
I've got a preorder for the Prime and, while I've never been on this forum before, common sense tells me y'all might be a little tired of all the Prime threads on the TF101 forum. That aside, Skyrim was basically what I was after, I just didn't want to be greedy and say it outright. That's not to say there aren't a fair amount of other games I'd like to try as well.
well no mater how fast your tab or laptop is there is a slight lag when i comes to high res pictures while remoting. and the key is that even if you are using cable on your pc, your tab is on wireless and most of the time wireless has a lower transmission rate then cable *im using a cheap ass wireless router mind you*
I play City of Heroes via splashtop on my local network it's pretty responsive. The main issues are as follows:
Fulscreen doesn't work, but a maximised window does.
Controls are really tough to approximate using touch.
VNC will never be good enough IMHO, try Splashtop HD.

I played NFS The Run (offline) using the docked tab and splashtop in my LAN, and everything was perfectly smooth and responsive at full screen.
Gotta try smth online, but I think that the lag would be too much :\
I've played torch light with splash top on a lan, it was very responsive but lacked enough input control to be fully effective, but on easy mode it is fun. The actually game is sharp and fluid, you just need a mouse and I hadn't set one up

I played WoW via splashtop a month ago. Ran an entire heroic from my transformer. Of course this is a novelty and isn't meant for prime time yet. (no pun intended)
I played WoW on mine (lowbie character) a few days ago using splashtop and worked well for just running around killing random animals on a quest. Had to modify my controls alittle bit in game because I was using TF only with no dock.
I got disconnected several times but it was playable enough to pass the time. I was at home, but tethered my TF to my VZW 4G service and my laptop was on my home internet, just to get a better test.
Cool. Sounds like there's been a good amount of you who've tried it with varying levels of success. I only plan on trying this with the dock and a mouse plugged in, so it sounds like a lot of the control issues would be alleviated.
Thanks!

[Q] Couple noob questions

I'm not necessarily a noob to android. I've flashed a few phones, dabbled with rooting and custom roms, but nothing too serious.
My first question about these Tegra 2 processors is fairly simple. I want to know if overclocking them makes them more media capable? I have a Droid Charge and had a Galaxy S before it, and both phones were perfectly capable of playing a 720p mkv with nary a stutter. It boggles my mind that I have to convert every video file before I drop it onto the Xoom. It's not a huge hassle but it's rather interesting a single core hummingbird can handle it with ease and a dual core clocked at the same speed has so much trouble.
Second question is this. Is there any development going on for the Xoom Family Edition? I haven't noticed much other than news posted regarding this version on this forum, so I'm not sure. It's obviously not the hit they were hoping it would be, there's a whole 3-4 cases made to fit it, and virtually no accessories for it like there is for the Xoom (docks and whatnot). If overclocking helps without nuking battery life, I'd be interested. I wouldn't know where to start developing, I'm definitely not a skilled programmer, but I would be happy to help any way I could (minus a potential brick, I can't afford a new tab)!
Bump. Any opinions?
Regarding the overclocking the tegra 2 , yes it will be more powerful therefore increasing media playback performance. Although battery usually drops faster you can install set CPU to set profiles for when the screen is off etc...
As for the Xoom I myself am not very knowledgeable about that device so I cannot effectivily answer your question.
Hope this helps!

Remember that the Xoom screen is so much bigger, so takes a lot more juice to playback at same resolution, but overclocked cpu does make a difference for sure. Also, if on ICS, go into developers settings menu and turn off animation or set to .5. Makes a big difference.
The Xoom FE (like the Xoom2 and the Xyboard) don't have unlockable bootloaders and noone yet has found the exploit to gain root access. Hence no development...so far. If you find the way, you will be popular among the owners of those devices.
If you overclock the Xoom it will of course consume the battery faster, as with anything that requires voltage tweaking. The main thing to remember is research the governors that will adjust what clock you're running at and when you're running it. Interactive usually gives the best performance speedwise while Ondemand gives you a mix of performance and battery life.
Your media playback issue could possibly be due to several factors. Processor, RAM, SD read rate, and the media player are the main culprits that come to mind.
If it is the processor then overclocking will most likely help. There is a minor off chance that the Tegra2 does not contain certain instruction sets included on the other devices processor that allow it to decode the Matroskiva, mkv, format as readily.
If it is the RAM, your best bet is to get a task killer and use it to kill everything before you try to play the video. You can also go into settings and go to individual apps to force kill them which tends to work better than most task killers.
If it is the SD card rate, research fairly deeply into the subject because I personally have heard many mixed reviews in regards to the Xoom and higher "class" or access rate SD cards. Eventually I plan on getting a collection of them to run some testing myself for a unified chart, but until then your best bet would be to ask experienced Xoom users, and browse these forums.
If it is the app then try looking around to see what other players are out there. Some people use different decoding codecs than others, and some tend to work better on mobile devices with limited instruction sets.
Mind you, if i remember correctly, the other two devices also display at a lower resolution, which would take less power, and the app used to play the file might not support the larger resolutions as well.
And if you have not already toyed around with your Xoom and hacking it, just as a warning, like all other devices it can be easy to brick. Make sure you have read at least 2 different tutorials on how to do it beforehand as some are much more clearly stated than others.
Hope this helps you some
I hadn't thought about the memory card being the issue. I'm not sure how fast the internal memory card is, but my external is only a class 2, so that could have an effect on load times and everything. I know the RAM isn't really a problem, I don't do much on my tablet, and I've tried killing apps and fresh boots and nothing seems to work. It only seems to use about 450mb out of 1024mb for apps, and out of that only 124 was in use last time I checked.
I have tried many other media players though, including Dice Player which seems to be unanimously the best, and nothing I've tried is able to play an mkv on the Xoom. I typically try downloaded tv shows before movies, which include 500mb Big Bang Theory mkv files and 1gb Top Gear mkv files at 720p. Neither play at all in the stock player and play very badly in Dice or other players.
I can't wait until ICS on the Xoom FE, I'm betting it fixes a lot of my issues. Such as the browser constantly force closing and my wifi slowing down the longer the tablet is on.

Linksys E4200 or other Wifi n router to play FullHD ?

Hi,
I've just received a few days ago my TF700 32Gb. Among other things, I tried to play some of my full hd movies from my Synology NAS.
Some played flawlessly and others don't (just a few meters away from my router, with a wall in between). I think my ISP proprietary modem-router is the bottleneck and want to buy a efficient Wifi router (but only if it does the trick).
Linksys E4200 seems to be rather fast in the 2.4GHz range and still have a rather strong throughput when distance grows.
Did someone tried the same experience (play a full hd, x264 mkv movie, let's say with a size over 10-12 MB) with such a router ?
Advices are welcome.
EDIT : I'm using BS Player pro as my video player.

I have the Linksys E3500 + Synology NAS and have no problems streaming 1080P mkv movies. (using MXPlayer). Would definitely recommmend the setup. I'm not so sure about your current setup but on my end, i think the only bottleneck is actually the infinity. Every once in a while, i might get a blip or lag here or there. Haven't tried putting it in high-performance mode though so that might help.
Which protocol did it use (dlna, ftp or samba) to play the stream over the network?
Are you referring to decoding issues or wifi quality ?
I have a E4200 with two 9dbi antennas and stream using samba and it works fine with 720p. I'm using the old Dice player. I can't seem to get the 1080p to work. I just set it up. Thanks for reminding me that I was able to do it. I even tried bluetoothing the sound to my Jambox. And works great. Video decreases a little here and there with the bluetooth on but the majority of the time it's super crisp.
On a side note go on ebay and buy the 9dbi antennas $23. The best addition to that router you can do. I can walk an easy 150ft and pick up good signal outside of my brick house and my router is behind my computer desk in the corner. It's literally blocked by 2 walls and my computer desk.

I'm using BSPlayer "Lan mode". I don't know exactly what kind of protocol it actually uses, but I think it is Samba. Anyway, as I'm going to root my tablet, just consider Samba as the protocol I'm going to use to stream content in the future. (I've got the same performance between SMB and NFS when playing with my XTreamer over a 500Mbits powerline plugs).
I'm referring to a decoding issue that is related to a too low wifi throughput (cause when playing in local, everything is smooth).

I wasn't aware of this option. Thanks mate for sharing this advice. It seems that the first gen E4200 need soldering, maybe your model is a E4200 v2?

Anyone have luck with game mode miracast

I can get it to connect and play for maybe 2 minutes until it starts freaking out and I have to disconnect it. The latency is great up until then. That feature is a very important one to me but it won't work. I know it's in beta but i'm not sure if that's what needs to be worked on or if they just want to reduce the latency more and improve the image quality. I have other miracast devices and they act the same way with the exception of 2 of them. The nexus 7 doesn't work right, i have a galaxy s4 clone and my main phone that work badly.
I used it one night while playing ShineRunner with my wife. I had her screen miracast on the TV so I could help her out. It worked great for about 10 minutes then started acting up and I had to kill it.
I wanted to know the same thing and am shocked nobody has really tested a few devises for least lag and shuttering.
I bought the Actiontec ScreenBeam Pro and updated its FW.
I'd say the lag is minimal and is not my main issue now.
Random shuttering can be a pain. It can vary from a only few times to a lot. At this point it seems to be trigger by some games more than others.
Afterburner with a touch profile shuttered a lot (35% of the time) not sure if it a resource issue with the touch profile or general interference in my room.
I played dead trigger 2 with native controls shuttered a lot less(10-15% of the time)
I had the device less than 5 ft during my tests.
This site has done some basic latency tests a handful of these miracast devices. It seems the Netgear Push2TV (PTV3000) had the least lag when used in a pc environment.
http://data.withinwindows.com/miracast-display-devices-and-windows-81-compatibility/
I think I will go buy the Netgear Push2TV tonight on my way home from work and test it.
Note
Having a game mode on the tv helps a lot with lag. If you stack the lag with the non-game mode picture processing of the tv and the miracast protocol it becomes very noticeable.
It's a good thing I searched the web first before buying a Miracast dongle. Sounds like it's not yet stable for gaming.
