Just wondering if it's doable. Obviously some games would lend themselves better to it than others, and I'm sure online gaming is out of the question.
Still, it intrigues me. So does anyone have any experiences?
tried playing skyrim over Splashtop. was funky. cant see anything if i run or get the horse to gallop. and i had the worst luck... an elder dragon popped up and pwned my ass to oblivion
Why do you think that was? Was it network related (Were you playing it on a local network or was it over the internet?) or do you think the speed of the tablet was what was holding it back.
I've got a preorder for the Prime and, while I've never been on this forum before, common sense tells me y'all might be a little tired of all the Prime threads on the TF101 forum. That aside, Skyrim was basically what I was after, I just didn't want to be greedy and say it outright. That's not to say there aren't a fair amount of other games I'd like to try as well.
well no mater how fast your tab or laptop is there is a slight lag when i comes to high res pictures while remoting. and the key is that even if you are using cable on your pc, your tab is on wireless and most of the time wireless has a lower transmission rate then cable *im using a cheap ass wireless router mind you*
I play City of Heroes via splashtop on my local network it's pretty responsive. The main issues are as follows:
Fulscreen doesn't work, but a maximised window does.
Controls are really tough to approximate using touch.
VNC will never be good enough IMHO, try Splashtop HD.

I played NFS The Run (offline) using the docked tab and splashtop in my LAN, and everything was perfectly smooth and responsive at full screen.
Gotta try smth online, but I think that the lag would be too much :\
I've played torch light with splash top on a lan, it was very responsive but lacked enough input control to be fully effective, but on easy mode it is fun. The actually game is sharp and fluid, you just need a mouse and I hadn't set one up

I played WoW via splashtop a month ago. Ran an entire heroic from my transformer. Of course this is a novelty and isn't meant for prime time yet. (no pun intended)
I played WoW on mine (lowbie character) a few days ago using splashtop and worked well for just running around killing random animals on a quest. Had to modify my controls alittle bit in game because I was using TF only with no dock.
I got disconnected several times but it was playable enough to pass the time. I was at home, but tethered my TF to my VZW 4G service and my laptop was on my home internet, just to get a better test.
Cool. Sounds like there's been a good amount of you who've tried it with varying levels of success. I only plan on trying this with the dock and a mouse plugged in, so it sounds like a lot of the control issues would be alleviated.
Thanks!

Hi, just had an idea and I thought I'd post it to see if there is any apps like this or if it is even possible?
Would it be possible to use a tablet pc as a monitor, either to extend your pc desktop, or to play xbox 360, or PS3 on? (no one cares about the wii, ha ha) The console controllers are wireless, it would be awesome if the screen could be wireless too. You wouldn't need to stop playing for a bathroom break, ha ha.
It has wireless and bluetooth, has nvidia tegra 2, and can play 1080p video, it seems as though the hardware is in place to do it... I'm not sure about bluetooth, but wifi should be more than fast enough to stream the video and audio.
There would most likely need to be software on both sides to get it to work.
Anyway, just thought I'd bring it up, any ideas?

I don't see it happening. Definitely not with the consoles, opens up a whole HDCP / DRM can of worms. As to a PC, you can always use a remote desktop app.
Would you really want to?
Tablets are a compromise between screen real-estate and portability. Their screens are half the size of the smallest desktop monitors you can buy and low-end monitors aren't that expensive.
If you want dual screens on your PC, buying a second monitor is a far superior option than slaving your tablet screen to your desktop PC.
Fair enough.
Just thought it would be useful.
You can!

Running Vegan7 here and iDisplay works, mainly use it for a status monitor as I already have 3 24" widescreens, just seemed like a novel idea.

Wow, that's really cool.
That's actually exactly what I had in mind when I started this thread. Awesome.
Still don't have a tablet yet. Have one on the way though.
How does it work? Software on pc and tablet communicate over wifi?
Thanks
I got my Xoom now and the iDisplay does seem to work.
Here is a review of a friend of mine using it on his.
Yep, this was exactly what I had in mind when I posted this thread. It's slow and buggy, but I'm sure it will improve and it does work for certain functions.
Yes, this idea has been around in different forms for different OSes for quite a while. Sorry, but truly new ideas for apps are really few and far between.

My G2X is currently sitting in a drawer, and I was wondering how well it would function as a dedicated set top box for my HDTV. I was wondering if anyone has tried this and has any suggestions on a good rom to use, as wells as accessories.
I was thinking it would be cool to use it as a DLNA client and possibly set up a NAS server. I would also want a keyboard and mouse for web surfing as well as a game controller for playing games. Netflix is also a no brainer. I can't see any reason why this wouldn't work just as well as those cheap android TV boxes coming out of china.
Any Advice?
This may just be my experience but I have had a lot of trouble getting a stable video from my HDMI on it. It may be the rom (EB, 4.0.4 AOSP) but I'm not so sure this phone was ever designed for that. It's possible, maybe, but I wouldn't hold your breath..
I am able to get stable HDMI output. I played some games with my G2X/P999 attached to an LCD screen via HDMI. I'm using the stock V21Y ROM.
Don't see why it wouldn't work. And with CM7.2 you can use a bluetooth mouse, too.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda app-developers app
Any other suggestions on ROMs? Are there any ICS ROMs that have solid 1080p output? I used the HDMI out with cyanogenmod but if I remember correctly it didnt work that smoothly.
With the announcement of full featured XBMC for android I think this could work out pretty well!

More than certain this can be done. I've used my g2x to play Game Boy / Game Boy advance games on my 55 inch TV before with a wii remote. Played for a good 4 hours. Although it did overheat and reboot a few times... Though I'm willing to bet that was due to the fact my phone was OC at 1.4GHz and I don't think that emulator had a frame rate limit. Also I've used it to stream from my NAS using es file explorer and mx player to get the best out of the phone. For streaming I watched 4 episodes of Pokemon approx 170mb each episode in one go.
What I did notice though is that if you are going to be using it for this it will drain the battery faster than it can charge. I've never fully drained the battery while it was plugged in during my use so you are going to have to experiment a little on your own to find out how long it lasts.
I finally went out and bought a bluetooth mouse and keyboard, and I can confirm that with an app called "Blueinput" (free but adds text ass your typing unless you register it for 9.99Eur) it does work. You can hook your phone to a charger, mini hdmi to your tv, connect bt mouse and keyboard via blueinput and sit back and use the phone via bt mouse and keyboard. I went full nerd. I bought a logitech keyboard that was made for ICS and has the google buttons on the keyboard, but I'm running cm7 and they dont register in the bt test section of blue input. The mouse is a little touchy, and there is no pointer, so no ability to click the background and add widgets, but any item on the screen can be selected with the mouse and the right click is back. I don't feel like loading ICS again to test on that, but next time I do I will let you all know how it works.
I also bought the wii classic that connects with a wire to the regular wii remote so I can map even more buttons and can now play snes and probably ps1 and better (haven't tried yet). Still think the G2X out does every other phone I have played with/rooted for people.
I have just purchased a g2x specifcally to try and use as a media player i will remove the mainboard from its case and put it into a 2.5" portabld hdd case for better ventilation, put a heatsink on the cpu and wire up some usb ports for extra connectivity, should it all work ok it should be a good little media box neatly packaged into a set top box type casing.
I do have a couple concerns
I have noticed people videos of mirroring from the g2x it only goes into fullscreen when playting a game or video but the desktop displays small, can that be changed and since I have no use for the lcd I want to have the hdmi permanent only output not mirroring.
will shows some pics of it all working when done, if it fails I will pretend I simply lost interest in the project and never be heard from again.
Just a suggestion, why don't you guys try xbmc android? Only problem is how to control it.
So I've seen a lot of people say their tablet is great, awesome,... but others complain about I/O issues, lags,... Looks like a half of the people in this forum not satisfied with it.
Please help me make my decision before buying by voting and explaining why you're satisfied or not. Thanks
Great idea! I'll vote once mine arrives. Over in the Prime section, there was a poll pretty similar that ended up showing that the vast majority were happy with their device, even though the comments indicated it should have been otherwise.
I'm thinking that the reason so many appear to have issues is because those with problems are more likely to say something than those without. It'll be interesting to see how this turns out.
I'm happy. ever since i installed all of my apps, i haven't experienced any lag issues. also, i downloaded a torrent and had no problems with that either. initially, my 64gb card could not be recognized, but after doing some formatting, its working fine now. add this to the extra room for storage and a great dock, and I'm pretty darn happy. i doubt i will turn on my xoom again, unless it gets jelly bean first.

The screen is gorgeous and it handles 720p videos well for such a lightweight and compact device. The build quality is also superb.
The thing I hate most is the proprietary charger. Why on earth would they not use mini-USB? Is Asus cheap enough to want extra money from people buying their cables?
The tablet rebooted for no reason a couple of times. And the stock browser is very laggy.
Happy customer overall.

It's because the USB port doubles as the dock connector.
Happy with mine. A little disappointed with the wifi netflix and bluetooth to Jambox. Slows down the download and voice is delayed. Even playing games with Jambox is a delay. But I guess I can use my earphones. My prime had the same issue. Everything else is good. Wifi is excellent. GPS is excellent. Bluetooth is very Strong. But like I said it effects the download speed when both wifi and bluetooth are both on. I don't know why.

I've been sitting here trying the various browsers. boat is smooth, but sometime the screen disappears. which makes me close it out and go back in. chrome is OK. but when scrolling down pages with images, it doesn't render fast enough. And no flash. the stock is slow and the rendering is an issue again. Opera WAS great, but its not as fast as the others. Firefox didn't work for me at all, the nightlies build. which brings me to Dolphin. no rendering issues. i can go to a page with 50 images on it, and scrolling thru them is smooth. its fast. and i love the gestures. so if you don't like the stock browser, try dolphin HD.

Hmmm I wonder if there's some software that can alleviate your problem? Maybe something to offset the audio from the video so it plays back in sync?
There should be a yes-ish option
I think at times, my TF700 does get a little laggy / slow. This is with the .26 firmware, which did fix a bit of the prior IO issues, but the tablet itself still feels laggy / bogged down sometimes when scrolling through or using the mouse.
I am overall very happy with mine. Yes it has a few bugs to work out, but nothing that is breaking the device. I have slight light bleeding in a couple spots, but there again not enough to bother me. If you want a 10 inch tablet right this second, this is hands down the best choice!

Im happy with the tablet and the response time we get from Asus regarding updates.
I'd have to say I"m very satisfied with it. The screen is gorgeous, the device is fast, the build quality is top notch (although some others have had issues), and the dock adds a lot of functionality.
Its not perfect though. The web browsing is pretty crap unless you use Dolphin, which is really good but I myself am a little irked having to use it due to that privacy invasion scandle it was involved with a while back. And the top battery life you get with actual use (by that I dont mean videos, since they're ran entirely on the power saver 5th core) is about 6 hours, pretty shy of the advertised 9.5 hours.
I dont mean to sound like a complainer here, it really is a great tablet and its only going to get better with updates. I'd recommend it to anybody without any hesitation.

I think that some answers might change with the new update (.26). I was "ok" with the Infinity up until the update and now I'm very happy. The lag and sluggish behavior is pretty much gone which changes my feelings on it.

I know what you mean with the Wifi/BT. I experienced it on my Prime and know the problem is real. I also know not every tablet will have it. I've exchanged my Prime for another one because of this problem. My second one worked perfectly with wifi/bt. My Tf700 does not experience this issue either. I am not doubting you and know the feeling of having spent all this money and it not work with wireless speakers and headsets.
If you are within your return period then jump on it. Return it and take your chances with a new tablet if this issue is really going to get to you. Sending it in for RMA could be useless and more problematic. When things got real rough with the Prime there were a good number that came back with the same problem or damaged at the repair facility.
As to the poll, I'm really pleased with my tablet. I really like the new power/volume buttons and sdcard slot. Seems minor but that click when pressing down makes it feel like a better built product. Got some light bleed but that is the only issue I have.
Unfortunately, I had to vote no since there wasn't a "Its alright" option
Hardware-wise, this thing is a beast. No real complaints at all.
Software-wise, meh...
I bought this tablet to be a bigger badder version of why I use my phone - namely watch movies, surf the web, and distract my kid with games.
Watching movies has been hit or miss. All movies look fantastic but playback has been an issue. Every player I've tried (MXPlayer, VPlayer, Dice, Mobo, etc) crash every few minutes when using software decoding. Looking at their respective forums and XDA, it seems to be linked to T3 so I have to wait for a fix. I know I could re-encode everything so I can use the hardware decoder but who has time to do that?
Surfing has been OK but android browsers haven't been all that great:
Chrome: no flash and wont let me download anything. I just get a Download Unsuccessful message.
Stock was just painful.
Opera was OK. It was the only browser that would let me select the microSD card as the download directory. Unfortunately, after downloading, everything ended up in the INternal download directory no matter what path I told it to download to.
Dolphin HD has been fine but I can't seem to download anything 2GB or above. Otherwise, it would be the clear winner for me.
FF is getting on my nerves with that left hand navigation strip, no ability to clear Top Sites, or very limited settings and add-ons. I'm keeping it though since its been the only browser that allows me to download 2GB+ files.
Can't say anything bad about game play. I haven't done much of that myself but my kid has a blast!

I'm so satisfied I literally exploded.
Signature: Going to butthurt ban me? Well go ahead.
I first got interested in touch screen technology about 4 or 5 years ago when I started college. I faced with the option of getting a powerful laptop, which I was going to need being a computer major, or get a convertible laptop. I studied the problem for a long time and decided that the technology had not progressed far enough to warrant spending so much money on something that had so little real power under the hood. Fast forward a few years and not only has the technology progressed, but is pervasive to say the least. The Infinity is the first tablet I have owned. I know, I might of kinda tried to kill a mosquito with a cannon, but your sure to hit your mark.
I often find myself in conversation with other people trying to justify the money I spent on the tablet with the inevitable question, "Well, what does it do?" I must admit I find myself at a loss of words. I have so many things run though my mind that it can do, i'm just flabbergasted with all the possibilities. I concluded it would be easier to focus on the things that it can not do. The question I pose to you is this, "What can you do on a laptop that you can not do on an android tablet?" We can just go ahead and assume that we are talking about a rooted and unlocked device, because lets be honest, if you find yourself reading forums on a developers website you are probably not your average consumer of electronic devices. I would like to start a running list on this question as I find it is a question I hear a lot from people looking to buy a tablet. At this point, I would say that the caveats of owning a tablet are as follows:
>The obvious answer is less powerful hardware.
>Lots of software is not compatible with Android, but not necessarily a problem, bc there are a host of other android apps that preform almost on par to their desktop counter parts.
> there are limitations on the peripherals due to lack of drivers. (I bring this up, bc, well, I really want to shoot a nerf canon at my dog wirelessly with my tablet.)
>Android does not support writing to external dvd/cd drives, but they can read.
>I pretty sure you can not boot from USB, limiting your ability to run live versions of various os'. I do network security, so I really want Linux Backtrack, and no the virtualized version just does not seem to cut it for me yet, but they are getting closer.
>No room for hardware upgrade
>Weight, I bring this up as a negative, because where there footprint of my device has diminished, I find myself carrying an onslaught of accessories. Stop me if you heard this one:
-Stylus
-USB adapter
-Micro sd card sleeve
-mini USB Hub
-Bluetooth Keyboard, just had one on hand so did not buy dock.
-Headphones
-Charger
-sometimes the micro hdmi cable.
-Small speaker
-screen cloth ( as another member put it, 10" of OCD glory)
-Grid-it Case to orginize all of it
-oh, and a portable surge protector. Overkill you say. I direct you to previous statement about canon.
>No true multitasking, such as split-screen window with to programs, and yes i know you can do it it with some, but your choices are limited in that respect.
>I will need someone to chime in on the next one, but I think you can not use two bt devices at the same time. Someone verify that pls.
>I for some reason can not get this tablet to communicate with my french press no matter how many times it with my Infinity.
I am intentionally omitting the topic of games because that would require a whole different thread. Let's try to stick to utilities and tools. Feel free to point out any mistakes as the goal is to learn.

Actually, you can - for example, I can use my bluetooth mouse while at the same time play music through my Belkin Bluetooth Music receiver.
Also, if you have a keyboard dock, a lot of those accessories aren't needed (USB hub, BT keyboard, Card Reader, charger, etc).
But, most of your points are true. One thing that I've found tough to do on a tablet is use MS-Project files. I do have an app to read them, but it isn't the best (plus, it can't edit them)...

No way in recent times can a tablet run like a laptop period.
This is a no brainer...
The latest notebooks are very powerful even in the simplest form.
When it comes to things like; Poser Pro, DAZ Studio, Adobe CS, MS office, Maya, Acrobat, Lightwave, Bryce or whatever you're going to need to lean on a PC or Mac.
Perhaps some day, but not today.
This is all moot
laptop beats it clean.
Heck I was trying to do a simple Google search from the address bar in the Chrome browser on my Infinity tablet. It stalled for a good minute.
In that minute I went over to my PC, launched Chrome, did the exact same action. Boom, it pulled up the results instantly.
I've been wondering how come Chrome works so solid on Windows and lackluster on Google's Android OS until I realized it's likely hardware.
The x86/x64 Intel based CPUs that make of the heart of Windows, Linux, and even MacOS have been in this game for more than a 2 decades and they've been constantly optimizing the CPU for the internet for half of it.
nVidia hasn't, they've making video cards for the majority. I'm starting to think now that had I thought with my old hardware geek mind, I would have never gone with a Android tablet, I should have bought a Windows tablet PC.
Sure, a laptop may be more powerful, but let's see your laptop get over 12 hours of battery life!
For *most* daily tasks, even MS-Office viewing and editing, a tablet can do just fine (at least with a keyboard dock). That's one reason why I bought the Transformer and really won't even consider a tablet without a true keyboard dock option anymore - without the keyboard dock, the device is just too limited for anything other than media consumption.
Add a nice keyboard dock and the tablet can instantly do *so* much more, while still being a great tablet when needed. I just wish there were more options when it came to a tablet with a keyboard dock! It kinda sucks being forced to go with Asus for this type of hybrid device.... But, I think that is slowly changing - it seems more devices with true keyboard docks are on the way. Asus better step up their game in the quality department, that's for sure!

Its only bad optimization on the infinity tablet. As the same SoC, only a slower version, it is extremly speedy on the nexus 7 tablet. We just have to hope for the best with the JB update.
And for Windows tablet PCs, the batterylife is nowhere compareable to ultrabooks and the infinity. So you have that downside.
I think this is at the root of many of the complaints from people. It looks like a laptop so why doesn't it perform like one. For basic tasks this is a really fantastic device but lets face it, your are running an OS based for something meant to be on and in your pocket 24/7. Its getting better but will it have the physical ability to do the things that a device with 20+ years of development? Not any time soon.
For me the always on feature is really awsome, touchscreen, small size and low power consumption help too. It replaces my laptop on travel and has opened the doors to media that I rarely used on my Viao. But the Viao still sits in its dock on my desk and splashtop manages to cover the shortcommings.
I think there would be less complaints if people did more research prior to purchase, not just about the device but also about the OS.
Of course the tablet won't take over the laptop in demanding tasks. The hardware for the laptop is a lot better. But the weight, battery life, portability, etc on a tablet is much better. Different devices for different purposes. But the dock is precisely why I like this device so much. It's still not a laptop, but at least for certain tasks I can make it as fast as one (for input). I definitely won't have to buy a laptop any time soon, since I already have a PC to do powerful tasks.
To each his own, I guess.

I can get it to connect and play for maybe 2 minutes until it starts freaking out and I have to disconnect it. The latency is great up until then. That feature is a very important one to me but it won't work. I know it's in beta but i'm not sure if that's what needs to be worked on or if they just want to reduce the latency more and improve the image quality. I have other miracast devices and they act the same way with the exception of 2 of them. The nexus 7 doesn't work right, i have a galaxy s4 clone and my main phone that work badly.
I used it one night while playing ShineRunner with my wife. I had her screen miracast on the TV so I could help her out. It worked great for about 10 minutes then started acting up and I had to kill it.
I wanted to know the same thing and am shocked nobody has really tested a few devises for least lag and shuttering.
I bought the Actiontec ScreenBeam Pro and updated its FW.
I'd say the lag is minimal and is not my main issue now.
Random shuttering can be a pain. It can vary from a only few times to a lot. At this point it seems to be trigger by some games more than others.
Afterburner with a touch profile shuttered a lot (35% of the time) not sure if it a resource issue with the touch profile or general interference in my room.
I played dead trigger 2 with native controls shuttered a lot less(10-15% of the time)
I had the device less than 5 ft during my tests.
This site has done some basic latency tests a handful of these miracast devices. It seems the Netgear Push2TV (PTV3000) had the least lag when used in a pc environment.

I think I will go buy the Netgear Push2TV tonight on my way home from work and test it.
Note
Having a game mode on the tv helps a lot with lag. If you stack the lag with the non-game mode picture processing of the tv and the miracast protocol it becomes very noticeable.
It's a good thing I searched the web first before buying a Miracast dongle. Sounds like it's not yet stable for gaming.
