A developer we know of is returning to the Mecha. Since the recent agreement between Google and Qualcomm - they plan to allow old phones support for newer Android (Legacy) versions -
Expect something huge to be making its way back to the Mecha. And it looks a lot like AOSP.

The kernel wouldn't be made from source if they did it all. A gb kernel could be modified to work though. Like twisted did. Cm won't do that though.

Fine, you want to know, here it is, Liquid's team broke up and left him, he remade the team replacing the devs that we're holding him back.
Qualcomm and Google made a deal and Qualcomm gave Google a huge amount of info about their hardware (the standard chip for most android phones) and now we could see Jelly Bean on the Mecha.
Since the ICS OTA drop and Liquid got a better team he's been working on some interesting stuff. Expect some new AOSP builds soon

Not directly related, no, but because of Qualcomm and Google - this could mean that older devices will see newer Android builds. The reason Liquid came into the conversation is because he's recently had to rebuild his team, and in turn, has returned to the Mecha. This Qualcomm agreement opens new doors for ALL developers, I just know now that Mecha could actually see JB - AOSP at that.

So The Nexus One isn't getting official ICS because it doesn't have enough space on the system partition(speculation as no one officially knows the real reason) but do you think this will be the case for many phones including the Captivate? Would suck if the bottleneck for peoples phones would be “not enough space"

The main speculation for why the Nexus One is not getting ICS comes down to two things: ROM storage for the system and the processor speed.
First, the Nexus One only comes equipped with 512MB of ROM. After the system files are installed, it leaves something around 200MB for apps, which is not a lot. ICS is supposed to take even more space than GB, so having something like 50-100MB for user apps would be likely...and unpleasant.
The Galaxy S phones all have 2GB of internal ROM I believe, so I don't think that issue will apply.
Second, the Nexus One has an older 1Ghz "Snapdragon" SoC. Although clocked the same as a Galaxy S phone, it is made with an older design, and performs less work per cycle. According to a few articles I have seen, the "Hummingbird" SoC in the Galaxy S phones has up to 3 times the GPU power of the older "Snapdragon" SoC...and roughly a 30% increase in real world performance.
Given that ICS will have hardware acceleration for 2D drawing, the slower processor (especially slow for GPU type elements) is likely a big hindrance, that again, should not apply to the Galaxy S line.
So keep your fingers crossed for this I guess. I will be! I am confident there will be a working unofficial release, but very doubtful about anything official.

Why do you think the sgs4g needs to get ics? My phone is fast got extremely great battery life and tons of other things. Do you just want ics so you could have the latest android flavor or do you think or know it will make our phones that much better. I'm not trying to be a smartass just curious why ppl are this rilled up about ics.
I think the only reason is because "others have it".
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
Great words blazen you know maybe ics has some quiet interesting features but our developers make than our phone from crappy to gingerbread better than ics that is one the reasons I want to start developing because I feel that I got skills to make some good stuff for the phone ( like themes and guides only things that i have finished) and other reason is because here our developers are way better than samsungs horrible costumer service....anyway every sgs4g user most appreciete the developers work even if the projects are not finished like ics port and aosp port because that makes people more happy and they know that there works are awesome

I believe that most want it because it is the newest OS and most believe it will be an improvement, much like GB compared to Froyo... Which is understandable considering the developers here are going full bore in a attempt to port ICS.
Being one of those that was satisfied with froyo, I have to admit I am even more satisfied with GB... But as for your question, I personally hope that it is released for our phone because if it is, so to would the source be released (just imagine what the developers could accomplish with it).
Just my 2 cents in the well.

You do realize that's a post from someone in the forums right? No word from Samsung USA. You cannot depend on what a customer service rep says, they sit behind the computer all day and still do not know a thing about the products they are supposed to be supporting. If I am not mistaken the T-Mobile version is the same as the Telus S2 in Canada. If it is I would not be in any hurry to upgrade to ICS. My own experience and experience of others as reported on the Howardforums has not been stellar. Problems with apps freezing and battery life going in the toilet are common. Looks great, just doesn't work very well. I would hold off until these issues are addressed. I usually always wait to do an update until I here some feedback but this time I jumped in and am now regretting it.

Each n every Dev here is skilled. For me there has always been 3 kind of peoples. People who are end users who just buy the phone and fear to fiddle with it cuz it will void the warranty. Others are power users who doesn't care about warranty and do flashing testing and even sometimes tweaking the code (these are the extreme power users). The last are developers some who add their own logic to the code to add new things and fix things the others are extreme developers (who has the android code in their brains like people in LG and Ricardo and last but never the least Google itself)

So what about the news that the Atrix has a leaked official build of ICS now? It's the only other Tegra 2 device that is exactly like our phone. If it would have came out months ago it would have been nice but now that it's out so soon to an official release for the p990 it makes me kind of sad.

Been covered before, the Atrix is a bit too different to be of much help. It's a Tegra 2 but there are some differences.
I'm just concerned if the Korean Su660 is similar enough to the P990, and thus the P999, for its source to be of use, or if we still need to wait for p990 source?
My secondary concern is that there will be additional time/issues getting all this to work on Jelly Bean, which is what the "cool devs" are going to work on anyway.

It's the same phone, minus a button + an antenna. Besides, the p990 is pretty much a p999 with a different radio and partition, while the su660 is the same with different kernel level changes (as the p990) (or something along these lines. It will get us cm10 though)

As far as i know, the difference from ICS to JB is MUCH MUCH smaler than GB to ICS. From what ive collected so far, if we got the ics source we will be able to get JB to work almost flawlessly, maybe not perfect, but a normal user like myself wouldnt be able to tell any difference.

UPDATE 10.21.2012
It looks like MR3 might be the end of the road for Mecha right now, with a huge overhaul in work related to other devices and
Liquid not having enough time and the motivation along with a missing source - This project is at a standstill. Plus, Protekk has been kanging him and not giving him the proper credits in the builds he's been making.
If you're interested in helping develop or helping at all in any way, shoot me a PM and I'll send it onto Liquid and see if he can
get in touch.
Sincerest,
Alex
----------------------------------------------------------------
It seems as if some issues with the signal drops are coming back after long term use - ill see what I can document and get it fixed - as this wasn't present upon first flash, and I am working to get everything documented and sent to Liquid.
Yours truly,
Liquids Mecha tester
sad indeed
That's sad news. I thought minus the front-facing camera issue and the data drops, this rom revived the thunderbolt!
Hopefully another developer with the time and motivation will pick back up on this project... or is there already an improvement in the works?
Thanks liquid!

They did announce that feature pack update, plus on release the device was given its 2GB of ram just for future support of new android versions.
My guess is it will get 4.2.1 official, but that will be the end of OTA. I have a feeling though CM and AOSP roms will be around for a while. Too many people have the US models of the GS3's, and due to the fact MOST of the code is similar between devices, it should not be hard to keep them all going as long as theres someone who cares to work on them.

I have had this phone since day one.. and I love it more than life lol xD but the matter at hand... I have watched development for this phone decay.. all roms are either getting abandoned, or support is just dying out.. this isn't applying directly to just AOSP, or AOKP, either.. but touchwiz as well.. should I switch to a different device? Ima nonstop hacker, and used to build roms myself.. but since I started tattooing again, I have no free time.. any good development phones out there?

you couldnt be any more wrong.
The development hasn't stop just slowed down. There are 4 new ports and some of the older roms have moved on to 4.2(mainly CM,liquid smooth and slim bean). The other roms are still being updated. There is also a new ROM based on 4.2 called Pure Google. Team Baked is working on a 4.2 based ROM.

Grab some do it yourself links and start cranking out builds to get our development back up.

You want something with constant updates, try a Nexus device. IMO I think the development of the S3 is some of the best I've seen.

As a backup to my S3 I have a Samsung Fascinate & just put JB 4.2 on it. If there is still development for a now antique phone, you really don't have to worry about the S3 not having development for a long time to come.
