Hello,
I have finally decided to go down the path of custom roms. Have read around quite a bit and decided that the best idea would probably be to root using the downgrade method instead of using the HTC unlock method so that I would also get S-OFF (to be able to change kernel and radio).
Q1: Do you think this is a good choice?
Q2: If I indeed use the downgrade method, would it then in som way be possible to flash 4ext recovery and do a system backup of my current setup before downgrading?
Q3: Do I actually need to be able to change kernel/radio? Will many custom roms need a change of kernel?
Q4: Is it possible to return to stock recovery/rom from both of these methods in case need of warranty?

1) Hell Yes. Best thing i did to my phone.
2) On your current setup, you'll need to flash the boot.img file from each ROM via fastboot after you flash it. If you use downgrade, This step is not needed. I reccomend you downgrade.
3) Every ROM has a built in kernel (boot.img) which will automatically change when you flash it. Do not mess with your radio, changing it does not make a lot of difference and it's risky. (if you don't downgrade, you can't change radio at all)
4) From downgrade, yes. From HTC Dev unlock, only partially. You can restore ROM an recovery, but your bootloader will only say Re_locked.

I think you missunderstood me on this one. My current setup is stock (S-ON, unrooted). What I want to do is to backup before I wipe the current rom, would that be possible?

I think I will downgrade but would this work even if I use the HTC unlock method? Think I read that you can't change kernel if you're only root with S-ON.

Oh yes i did To answer question 2, yes you can. Unlock your phone Via HTCDev.com, flash 4ext recovery.img from fastboot and nandroid backup.
Ok, so if I want a backup I'll still have to unlock via HTCDev.com. Guess I better start to write down my current settings..
Now I've downgraded! Have also run revolutionary but not quite there yet as I have some questions so I won't do anything stupid
Q5. I want 4ext recovery instead of the clockwork mod so I answered no when revolutionary asked me to install that one. After that I've become a little nervous because I don't know if it's safe ro reboot without flashing a custom recovery, is it?
Q6. Can I reboot and install 4ext recovery from the phone (from market or apk)?
Q7. Why does revolutionary has it's own hboot (6.98.1002) and am I supposed to stick with it?

You should rerun rev and install cwm then u can replace it with 4ext by downloading the app from market and flashing it from within the app
You'll need to flash superuser using cwm first though.
Yes you should replace the rev hboot with a standard engineering hboot. There are advantages as in some instances the rev hboot cannot be overwritten.

I rebooted without problem. So I guess the problem is that I don't have su access? Any walk around for this?
Yes, but you need CWM first, that'll give you EVERYTHING you want. Follow this to get CWM and get root access - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14693680 Then, download the 4Ext recovery control app (it needs root) and flash 4ext recovery.

Ah, perfect! I'm working my way through the different guides and are now in this stage:
SAGA PVT ENG S-OFF
HBOOT-0.98.2000 (PG8810000)
RADIO-3805.06.02.03_M
Have also got 4ext as recovery so all is great so far
Now I just have to decide on which custom ROM to start with. Think Quattro, Endymion and Reaper are the top candidates
Btw, do you think I should upgrade to the latest hboot-2.00.2002? And should I upgrade to the latest radio? And should I in that case do that before or after ROM?
No need for touching your radio or hboot. I've never flashes an hboot and the one time i flashed a radio, my phone almost got bricked.

Hi. So this is what I have done so far..
1. Unlocked my bootloader using HTCDEV which unlocked my bootloader but kept S-On.
2. Then I flashed my recovery with 4Ext recovery.
3. Installed SU using that. Now I have super user privilages.
In the end, I have unlocked, rooted bootloader with HBOOT 2.00.0002 and S-On. I have taken back up of my current ROM.
From what I understand,
1. My phone is completely rooted.
2. To install a new ROM, I need to go to recovery in booloader and install from SD card.
3. I can revert to my old stock ROM using the back up I took earlier.
Please let me know whether I have got it right till here.
I went through beginner's guides and needed few things to clarify.
1. Will installing new ROM overwrite RUU ?
2. If yes, how do I back up RUU or Rom.zip before I flash with new ROM ?
3. Even though I restore back to my stock ROM. Will my super user privilages remain ?
4. If yes, how to remove them ? How to unroot ?
5. Can I restore to stock's recovery ?
In other words, can I COMPLETELY restore it back excluding unlocking? Please guide me with respect to Desire S.
Installing RUU will comletely restore your phone to stock, removing root as well. So basicly there is no point in backing it up.
Please note that when you unlocked with htcdev.com you will have to flash boot.img separately after installing any custom rom for the phone to boot.
Anyway, there are so many guides on this forum that unswers all your questions, don't see a point to start the new one here.

Thank you. And sorry for the new thread. I went through the guides. Just needed to confirm. These RUUs, are they fixed for a particular model and country? For example, this link provides some RUUs for Desire S for different countries. So RUUs for all the Desire S phones in that region are same, officially ?

A few points.
i) I very much doubt anyone will send you a personal nandroid backup of their phone. Also note that it won't contain firmware components such as radio. I also doubt it'll help you in any way you expect.
ii) If you want to go back to full stock along with associated firmware, just use a RUU. This of course will depend on your CID. Try: http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Pyramid
iii) you don't mention important aspects about your phone. HBOOT version, Baseband version, CID, current and intended ROM..........
iv) you mention that you are S-ON, I'd suggest you get full S-OFF. There are many guides on XDA on how to achieve it via Revolutionary.io (HBOOT <= 1.18.0000) or Juopunutbear (HBOOT 1.2x.xxxx).

Hi, I have my Desire S totally with the stock system. So S-On, bootloader locked and oficial rom 2.3.5 branded from Vodafone Spain. Finally I decided to unlock my desire S and to change the rom, etc. After reading a lot, the following are the steps i want to do for that.
Before all I would like to back up my apps, sms etc, contacts are in google so i dont worry about them.. ¿How could I do it with my stock desire S?
Once i have the back up I will perform these steps:
1.- First to downgrade de Hboot ( mine is 2.00.0002 locked) following this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399331 or this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1443636
I read that this method has benefits over to unlock by htcdev when you want to fash custom roms, and you dont lose the warranty.
In this step what rom should I use to downgrade if my phone is vodafone Spain branded with rom version 2.10.161.3? maybe this RUU_Saga_Vodafone_UK_1.32.161.1_Radio_20.28b.30.0805U_38.03.02.15_?

Which ruu to use I don't know. But step 3 is not necessary. All roms are pre rooted.

Aha, so once I have unlocked with revolutionary and changed the recovery I could install any custom rom and it will have root already?
Maybe before install the custom rom I should flash the new eng Hboot so i can flash ics roms, right?

I was able to root my phone with S-On
now it has an unlocked root using HTCDEV Unlock | S-ON | HBOOT 2.00.0002 | 4EXT Recovery v2.2.7 RC5
Note on the HTC dev website you have to Select the bottom option 'all other supported models' from the htc dev unlock root website
as desire S is not listed
then I downloaded a fantastic operating system ( rom) called virtuous Saga which has Sense version 3.6 and android 4.04.
( also via this forum - more thanks to mdeejay - again unable to thanks you on the forum yet)

I did not flash the firmware because I have no idea what that means and it sounded potentially hazardous and I read somewhere you cannot do it with S-ON ( whatever that actually means) - I only installed the saga ROM which works fine with nothing faulty that I have so far tested
I just installed the virtuous saga zip on my sd card, installed it from the recovery screen and then had to flash the boot.img from the zip file using flashboot from my PC
Result - Bluetooth works and my phone has lots of nice updated features also Bluetooth keyboard works perfectly now with this (Again not sure if it makes a difference but this keyboard works using a bluetooth mode called spp rather than HID) And I still have the lovely clock and weather widget - in fact it does not look much different to my old android version - just faster and smoother.
If you try this make sure that your Google account is synced and all contacts are backed up . I also used BookmarksSB to back up bookmarks, Astro to back up all my applications to the sd card, and SMS back up & restore to back up all my sms messages. all free in the Google market.
I also took my sd card out when following the steps to format and clear caches in recovery mode because I did not want to accidentally wipe my SD card.!!

Your goal is to change the rom and backup your phone's current state. Right? You can follow these simple steps:
a. Unlock bootloader by http://htcdev.com/bootloader/
b. Flash custom recovery (4EXT)
c. Backup your phone by using recovery
d. Install new rom, dont forget to flash boot.img separately (because of your phone was unlocked by htcdev.com)
e. [Optional] Root if need
The steps you're going to take are right. You should write down what RUU you have now in case you want to go back.
It looks like you know enough about rooting and flashing and the alpharev way is the best. Via HTCdev you can't install ICS if I am correct.

Thanks but I wanted to do it without using the official unlock of HTCDEV to avoid to have to flash the boot everytime I flash a rom and lose the warranty.

No, there is no "normal" way to keep your apps and their data.
You can gain temp-root and manually zip+copy the /data/ directory (to retain permissions), I suppose. But I don't think it's something you're able to do. And restoring data from it would be quite some pain, too, and require fixing permissions as far as I remember.

No way. You should s-off OR unlock bootloader first.
If you dont want to use htcdev.com to unlock bootloader, you can downgrade hboot and then s-off. Search in the "Desire S General" box, there are 3-4 thread about hboot downgrading and s-off.
Ok so I will do it without back up of apps. Just need to know wich rom to use to downgrade...

Without the data means only the apk, right? So the file to install it that most of them are already in the play store. If it is like that, it has not many advantages, but thank you anyway.
First off, I’d like to say thank you ahead of time to everyone here on this forum. You guys are very intelligent and generous and it is much appreciated. All the hard work and dedication that is put into this particular subject does not go without notice. :good:
My issue may not be too major or really an issue at all. It’s more of a ‘How-To’ per say and I’m just looking for a little guidance. I have used the resources available to me within XDA and am grateful that so many of you have spent so much time creating guides, code, etc. With that being said, I’d like to reach out to the User Forum in general and ask for your assistance.
I’m still in the mindset of the HTC HD2 days where it was a native Windows phone and all that took place was flashing. Flash this. Flash that. Once the concept was known, it was fairly simple and quite easy to comprehend.
Since then, I have upgraded to the T-Mo HTC Sensation 4G (About a year ago) and have kept it stock until just recently. This has been my first native Android phone so the ‘Rooting’ aspect is anew.
So on to the bulk of the posting. Please excuse my ‘Noobness’ in this matter.

One of the most well written guides I’ve seen to date. Upon doing so, I currently have Unlocked my phone Via HTCDev. I have flashed a recovery (4EXT) and then flashed the ‘Android Revolution HD 1.2.2 Tmobile’ ROM. Everything went to perfection and works flawlessly. Now I’d like to take things a step further and obtain S-OFF and full root (If that’s the correct terminology?). This is where I’m at a standstill. From what I’ve read, I need to flash back to a “Stock” rom before I should perform the S-OFF procedure?
I guess I’m just confused at the process of achieving this. I’ve read several guides about achieving S-OFF such as the one by ‘auggie2k’ and other How To guides. I guess my question is what is my best option from where I’m currently at? The best process? Do I have a full root or just a Rooted ROM? Upon downloading a ‘Root Checker’ App within Play Store, it appears that I have root access. Is this just due to the Rooted ROM that I’ve flashed? How does the recovery come into play when I go about achieving S-OFF? Once I flash a “Stock” ROM, Do I need to rid of the recovery before gaining S-OFF?
If someone links an article to this thread, would you be so kind to explain the procedure more in depth from my viewpoint?

For s-off, there isn't really a "best way". Since you have hboot version 1.2x, you need to use auggie's guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25202517
Recovery will not be affected in any way after you s-off your device. Recovery is a mode in which you can do multiple tasks including but not limited to (these are the most common tasks in recovery) 1. Flash zip files (ROMs, mods...) 2. Make nandroid backups/ restore nandroid backups 3. Format different partitions
There are numerous functions of recovery mode, and ones such add 4EXT and clockworkmod are custom ones.

Technically, a full wipe of your SD card is not required, it is a precaution (I s-offed my device without wiping my SD card)
And yes, s-off will not affect recovery in any way. S-off is security off which means that you can change pretty much anything you want to your phone.

Controlbear.exe (juopunut will ask if you want their custom bootloader). Their bootloader is unlocked so you can flash roms and stuff via adb/fastboot commands). 2. You can flash firmware 3.33 (recommended). Firmware 3.33 will also unlock your bootloader so that you can flash ROMs and stuff via adb/fastboot commands.
I'm guessing you are rooted because you have an unlocked bootloader via HTC Dev and root checker confirmed that you are rooted. So since you are rooted, go ahead and s-off your sensation.

I'm guessing you are rooted because you have an unlocked bootloader via HTC Dev and root checker confirmed that you are rooted. So since you are rooted, go ahead and s-off your sensation.

Thank you so much for the information.
What I meant was that by formatting the phone and/or SD card (If I did), would the recovery still be on the phone itself? Just to be clear, the Bootloader is completely separate from the Recovery? Or is the recovery an aspect associated with the bootloader. Upon doing the HTCDev method, I believe its my bootloader that says **UNLOCKED** at the very top of the screen but of course still says S-ON since I haven't done S-OFF yet. I have 4EXT flashed onto the phone.I guess now I'm confused because the S-OFF guide states to unlock the phone via HTCDev before S-OFF which I've done. Is this like a partial root since you can't change the firmware or radios due to it being restricted? I haven't done anything but follow the directions within the guide I posted above.

I'll try to answer your questions in a list to prevent confusion:
1. Formatting all partitions of the phone and formatting SD card will not erase the recovery. Formatting the SD card WILL remove all your backups from recovery though.
2. Bootloader is completely separate from recovery. 4EXT and clockworkmod are custom recoveries used to restore your phone (and wipe your data/perform other functions)
3. You can say unlocking bootloader is a partial root. It gives you access to flash some things, but not other things. You can flash a custom recovery, ROMs, and mods(tweaks/themes to ROMs).
However, s-off allows you to change other parts of your phone (firmware, radio...)
