This is a guide under construction that gather different ways to get (back) to HTC stock ROM from almost everything : branded ROM, custom ROM, ROOTed/S-OFFed/etc. DHD.
Whatever you do with your phone, I cannot be responsible for it. Don't blame me if you brick it. I'll try to keep this up to date.
How to read this ?

I have never ROOTed/S-OFFed/Radio S-OFFed/CWMed my phone
In this case you have either a stock HTC ROM or a branded ROM (SFR/Vodaphone UK/T-Mobile/...)
1) How do I know that I have a branded ROM or an HTC stock ROM ?
HTC Stock ROMs are often up to date if you do all the OTAs so, update your phone OTA and check your version number, it should be the last one. Moreover, branded ROMs often have a custom boot screen (with awful logo) and custom (unremovable) apps.
1.A) I have DHD with stock ROM !

1.B.1) Will RUUs work ?
Sometimes it will, sometimes it won't, the best thing to do is to try. The worst that could happen is... nothing.
Warning : At this point, if RUU works, you'll have a stock ROM on your HTC and you won't be able to go back to your branded ROM (except for T-Mobile phones as a RUU is available for them). No turning back ! Anyway, that shouldn't be a problem for warranty as RUUs are "public and official".
1.B.2) Why RUUs wouldn't work ?
HTC allow brands to put their own custom firmware that we call here a "branded ROM". Those include brand promotional items such as specific apps and boot screen. Plus, they have their specific OTA that could be on a very different schedule than official ones (from HTC). For this reason and to avoid county-specific (chineese) to be converted in WWE phones, HTC RUUs check for a specific number in your phone called CID. This CID tells if you can use RUUs and if yes, wich one (WWE, chineese, etc.)

The zip trick :This is a method that uses a test RUU (that doesn't check for the CID). Then you fake it replacing the test ROM by the one of your choice (here an official one). This method is described here but not tested on branded phone. This may not allow OTAs (need feedback).
ROOT & Radio S-OFF/SuperCID/Unlock your phone :By changing the Radio with this guide you will be allowed to flash all RUUs. No revert tool so far to restore the Radio but this is coming soon.

I can confirm that with Radio S-OFF it is possible to flash a RUU and get OTAs work. Everything will go back to stock except the Radio S-OFF, which will remain. If the device had also a bootloader S-OFF (ENG hboot), it will be replaced with the stock one.
If a device has only bootloader S-OFF, flashing a RUU is not recommended, as it will fail at version checking (because of no SuperCID). Eng bootloader has a higher version number than stock bootloader, and without Radio S-OFF the system will not allow downgrading.

Is there a way to flash back the Radio S-OFF to the original one ? As far as I know, Radio S-OFF creates a backup of the partition it changes but I didn't see any tool that can change back this partition.

Also, when you say "not recommended" it's because it'll always fail or it has a little chance to fail ?
If you are S-OFF (not radio) there is no way to flash RUU again ? What about extracting the ROM from the RUU and flashing it with CWM ? same problem ?

As stated in my Radio S-OFF thread somewhere in the last few pages (forum search is recommended), tools for Radio S-OFF removal are coming, but you just have to wait a bit longer. The backup that has been made is vital for the process, so do not lose it!
Not recommended, as it will most likely (probably always) fail. Without Radio S-OFF RUU is indeed not possible, unless you manually flash back the original bootloader using the original way of getting it in there (wpthis.ko + dd image). You would have to be in the stock ROM for that to work. Extracting a ROM should be possible, but I am not a ROM chef, so do not believe me

I understood that it'll wipe everything except Radio S-OFF but what if this is done (method A or B) with a vendor-derived DHD ? Will that work ? Why wouldn't it ? Will OTAs be possible ?

Are there any issues with the wpthis.ko + dd image method to write the original hboot over the engineering? I've returned system, boot, recovery, etc. to their branded originals. I don't see why there would be a problem but just seeing if anyone's tried this.
The other option is 'fastboot flash hboot'. With this method, I'm not sure if I'd have to 'fastboot erase hboot' first and frankly doing that seems a bit risky because if the fastboot flash fails, you're really screwed.
No, dd can overwrite it just fine.
BUT I would do it like this (now that my tool can do radio s-on):
Radio S-OFF (if not already)
Run stock RUU
Do stock cid and radio s-on with my tool
And your device is stock.

I was thinking about this solution which works flawlessly it seems. I made this guide for ppl that wanted their HTC Stock for real and your tool wasn't able to S-ON ^^
Anyway, still missing the feature to restore the CID as it was BEFORE your tool makes radio S-OFF.
I follow your thread and so far, as I understood, there's a field where we can put the string we want but nothing to restore as it was before. Right ?
For ppl who want to restore to their branded ROM (if they made a backup with CWM) what do they have to do ?
My guess :
1) Root + Radio S-OFF
2) Remove S-OFF if any (not Radio S-OFF !) by flashing any RUU
3) Root again (as root is lost by flashing RUU)
4) Reinstall CWM
5) Now the phone is still S-OFF and SuperCID, right ?
6) Restore ROM via CWM (does this restore the S-OFF we had when we made the backup via CWM ?)
7) Remove S-OFF if still here (how ?)
8) Radio S-ON with the tool (with previous CID)
9) Done, happy branded stock ROM fully functional

6) CWM/Nandroid doesn't backup/restore hboot so we'll still have stock S-ON hboot from RUU.

As far as I understand, people with branded phones will still have the recovery from CWM. And, so far, no easy way to replace it.
It seems like a tool to do that would be welcome here. What do you think jkoljo?

If you have non branded device, my tool will automatically restore the stock cid. Otherwise a user has to check the cid from the bootloader himself before doing s-off.

I'm testing all this stuff on my branded phone.
I started with a Rooted + S-OFFed DHD with AR 1.9 :
1) Radio S-OFF
2) RUU
3) Trying to temproot gets stuck on "rooting device, please wait"... Any clue ?
Edit : I grabed another copy of VISIONary here and it worked.
I had r14 before, downloaded r14 but files were slightly different in size... Anyway, package installation worked for both and I even successfully root my device with the first one long time ago. Weird
Are you still radio S-OFF? In which case, do you need to root again? The Vision wiki says you only need radio S-OFF for permanent root:

Maybe install Superuser.apk and busybox and then see if you can install ROM Manager/CWM.
Edit: Or try typing 'su' into a terminal app like ConnectBot or Terminal Emulator.
I've returned to the dark side with a stock Sense rom (instead of CyanogenMod), because I'd like to OTA update to HTC's gingerbread rom when it comes (hopefully soon).
I installed the signed HTC rom.
I'm not sure, but I think it's a good idea to follow the instructions for radio S-OFF, superCID and simunlock (from Apache14 himself: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857444) before installing a signed rom.

Yes, there will be a CyanogenMod 7 based on Gingerbread probably soon after HTC releases their rom, and I'll be back then.
I still have root, Eng-Hboot and the official clockworkmod recovery installed. I re-installed eng-hboot and clockworkmod just to be sure, after installing the signed rom using the HTC installer
I believe that my carrier won't have anything to do with it (i.e. I won't need to wait for them to modify the Gingerbread rom), as I I'm using a plain brown HTC rom. Although someone could tell me I'm wrong.

You'll probably find that LeeDroid, Android Revolution, and the other ROMs which are based on the stock HTC ROM will be upgraded within a few days of the Gingerbread HTC ROM being released. I find those to be a little better than stock as they have a lot of the crap removed. I found LeeDroid very easy on the battery too.

jkoljo's Windows program is a front-end for the same program that Apache14 uses (gfree) so you get the same result with less hassle.

Yes, that's right. SuperCID will let you install any signed ROM. S-OFF will let you install any ROM at all.
The issue some of us are facing is trying to get back to an untouched branded ROM (for warranty purposes). It can be done a number of ways, just trying to discern the safest. I think it's probably:
1) Radio S-OFF
2) Flash RUU
3) Install CWM
4) Restore ROM via CWM
5) Restore original recovery with 'dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p21'
6) Radio S-ON with the tool (with previous CID)
7) Done

My guess is that you install CWMR and flash it via that. But you need root access to do that, I thought unlocking the bootloader was meant to eliminate this.
Also, I've been reading that people are having issues installing ROMs this way, they are experiencing a hang at the HTC logo on boot.

After you flash the custom ROM using CWM, you then have to extract the boot.img file from the ROM.zip file and manually flash it in FASTBOOT mode. That is the nature of the unlocked bootloader. The boot partition is not mounted R/W in recovery mode, it is only mounted R/W when you are in bootloader FASTBOOT mode.

1. Unlock bootloader via HTC's website
2. Root phone (with gingerbreak apk?)
3. Install CWM via ROM manager
4. Backup existing ROM with CWM and backup files with titanium
5. Install ROM via CWM (wipe data, wipe cache, install ROM)
6. Flash boot.img (HBOOT, fastboot, and flash image)
7.Reboot into cyanogenmod
If I have anything wrong, please let me know. Thanks.

Step 2 and 3 are not necessary. After you Unlock the bootloader, you could then simply flash ClockworkMod in FASTBOOT mode.
1. Unlock bootloader.
2. Flash CWM image in FASTBOOT mode.
3. Backup existing ROM with CWM.
etc.
Successfully installed latest nightly r2 yesterday night :O

In case it will be running HBOOT 2.00.0002 with S-ON will I be still able to flash a custom rom on the device? AKAIK S-ON only protects the radio from being modified.

I'm in the same position as the OP with the newly unlocked bootloader via HTC.
I flashed cwm through fastboot but now I can't reflash through ROM Manager. I installed both SuperUser and BusyBox but both point the finger at eachother saying the other needs to be installed. What am I missing??

Download the latest su-3.0.x.zip file. Then boot into CWM recovery and install this zip file. This will root the current ROM you have installed and then ROM Manager and BusyBox will both be happy.

So you unlocked via HTC dev, flashed custom recovery, wiped all partitions, flashed cyanogenmod, rebooted into fastboot, flashed boot.img via fastboot (fastboot flash boot /pathtobootimg/boot.img, if i recall correctly) and then you were able to boot into cyanogen?
I did exactly these steps (only with 4ext instead of cwm, which shouldn't affect the result) and was stuck with the white bootscreen and no adb logcat output whatsoever.
Currently I am back on a prerooted official RUU (2.3.3), but it still performs really bad and I would like to have cyanogenmod.
Btw: I have a Desire S, hboot 2.00.0002, S-ON, no carrier branding.

My goal is to install the Endymon
I read many thread and i understood that the curret way to do this is:
Downgrade My ROM from 2.3.5 ( 2.10.401.8 with HBOOT 2.00.0002) to a ROM 2.3.3 with HBOOT 0.98.00000 (Ex: RUU_Saga_HTC_Europe_1.47.401.4_Radio_20.28I.30.085AU_3805.06.02.03_M_release_199410_signed.exe)
To do this i need to follow the steps from 1 to 7 of this

Hello, I just want to share my experience on how i managed to S-OFF my phone. My main problem was that I had the latest ruu on 2.10.401.8 and couldnt downgrade. Even though i unlocked the bootloader using the htcdev .bin file I couldnt install the proper recovery (clockwork mod) nor a previous ruu. So here is what I did.
I first unlocked the phone using the htcdev.
Then I followed those pretty 7 steps mentioned on prev post.
and changed my version to a prev one.
I r e l o c k e d my phone using htc supertool and
clicked my 1.47 ruu exe file. That worked and it downgraded my phone.
After that it was a piece of cake to use the revolutionary tool to S-OFF.
Thanks all the xda community for the infos i got and managed to do it....

Sorry another n00b question but just wanted to make sure...
So I am one of those that got tired to waiting for the OTA and finally decided, at least for now, to try one of the ICS ROMs. I've done some on GB so I'm vaguely familiar with flashing and all that but since it's my first time with ICS I'd like to ask you experts out there.
Basically I just want to make sure that if/when TMo finally pushes out the "official OTA", I can give that a try also. I guess my fear is that I've been reading how it's difficult...or impossible?...to go back to stock since I have to flash my firmware.
Can you go back to 100% Stock TMo GB from ICS?
I currently have already S-Off, root (superuser), and S Cid to 11111111 in preparation. I figure while I wait for TMo, at the very least, I can run my phone rooted to let apps like AutoKiller Memory help my phone run better. I also did a backup using 4EXT.
My next step is to take the plunge but before I do, I'd like to know that I can go 100% back. I've done it with GB ROMs but wasn't sure about ICS because of the whole firmware thing.
Can someone LMK if it should be no problem? Much appreciated for guiding a n00b like me! You guys are awesome!!!

This is how I do it:
1. Place firmware on root of sdcard.
2. Use 4ext recovery control to reboot to recovery (power menu).
3. Restore my stock nand from 4ext recovery.
4. Use 4ext recovery to reboot into bootloader (power menu).
5. Select "bootloader" from fastboot menu and let hboot detect the firmware. (volume up for "yes")
6. Let it complete and press power to reboot when prompted...
All my roms, nands, firmwares, radios, etc... are backed up on my sdcard. As long as I've got a good charge on the battery I can go back and forth between BG and ICS multiple times without ever connecting to a PC or pulling my battery...
If you don't have a nand of your stock rom then just flash the 1.50.531.1RUU... And restore your CID.
Thanks for the info GROGG88! So this will restore my firmware too? So basically using the RUU should get me back to full stock including the firmware? Or do I need to downgrade the firmware manually first?

If you go by the guide in the link I posted then you'll be able to restore a stock nand if you have one. After that you can flash 1.18 hboot and stock recovery.
The easiest way would be to flash the RUU which will put EVERYTHING back to stock including firmware, but you'll keep s-off (which is good).
It really depends on whether or not you backed up an unmodified version of your stock GB...
I'm going to post download links for the 1.50.531.1 RUU and a PG58IMG.zip version of it in the General section. You can use the PG58IMG.zip to restore individual components by extracting the files, removing whatever you don't want, and archiving the files you do want back into a zip...

Also wanted to ask...I know you mentioned that after the procedures I will have everything stock but still with S-Off. Do you know if I can receive OTA with S-Off or will I have to adb and make it S-On again making the phone COMPLETELY stock.

You can use the OTA with s-off. You want to keep s-off so that you can flash a custom recovery and re-root after the update. You can s-off the new bootloader, but it involves a new procedure that involves jumping a wire from a terminal to ground that many are not comfortable with.
It is much better to keep s-off...

Good to know! Thanks! So the new procedure requires you to do something physical to your phone? That sounds just wrong...I guess they really don't want s-off, huh?

RUU---ROM UPDATE UTILITY
(its an .exe which is run from windows pc ..you need to double click on it to start it)
relation to rom -> official way of updating your ROM via HTC
Changing RUU --kind of impossible
flashing RUU ---you can flash any RUU if you are superCID and SOFF
RUU are dependant on CID and current firmware your device is having

Mate these are not RUU, they are just a reference, for example v3.32 is an RUU, Android Revolution HD, Elegancia etc are Custom ROMs based on v3.32 RUU, that's why they mentioned it in there respective titles. Majority People don't flash RUUs, instead they flash custom ROMs made by the devs, they modifies the RUU, and brings it for us with various fixes and Enhancments. I hope my brief post will help make it clear for you.

Just want to clarify...so to install a RUU...do I need to have CWM already installed or can it be on stock recovery? I am already S-off...and I've changed CWM to stock recovery....and superCID to the Tmobile one....if I want to flash the TMOUS RUU...is that all I need to do...just run the RUU?

If you want to flash RUU, Refer to This Guide, and follow the steps carefully, and i think you can go to Sensation Android Development and choose to flash the custom ROMs, in my opinion they are highly enhanced for performance, use Insert Coin or Virtuous Inquisition instead.

You seem to know ur stuff im hoping you can help me.
Brand new stock Telstra HTC One XL (Australia)
Unlocked & rooted, TWRP recovery.
Backed up stock.
Installed a few different ROMs before deciding on one.
Accidentally reset factory from hboot instead of twrp.
Lost stock ROM back up.
Mounted USB & copied custom ROMs back across to sdcard.
Files did not appear on sdcard.
Decided to partition and try again.
On sucessful partition, suddenly all files became visible, despite partition warning "all files will be deleted"
Flashed Viper XL successfully.
SDcard total storage reading as 24gb (32gb stock)
1. if i have done anything to reduce my available storage i want to get it back.
2. id like to go back to stock rom and basically start from scratch with clean stock backup and clean storage.
I found a link to the ATT One X stock rom on the US HTC support site.
I cant find anything similar on the AU site for the One XL.
I read i have to re-lock my bootloader, thats fine i found a tutorial, but i need to find the stock rom.
Also i have no understanding of RUU nor do i have it downloaded.

I have just downloaded RUU Evita UL Telstra WWE 1.89. 841.9 Radio 0.18c.32.09.01 10.9 3a.32.20L release 266699 signed .exe

This is sensation only forum.. But as the question is kinda generic I can help you
Now if you want to go back to stock then options are
1. Restore the stock backup (which you've lost now)
2. Flash a recovery flashable zip (just like a custom rom zip) of stock rom (which makes it almost stock)... You need to find it in the Sensation xl section of xda
3. Flash a ruu..Use this guide as reference http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26541170 (everything won't apply for you.. But almost 90% of it applies)
As for sdcard data loss.. Backup the current contents of sdcard and do a proper format of the sdcard using sdpartitioner(a good tool for formatting sdcard in windows)
Btw I don't understand why you need a partition of sdcard

It was suggested to me by a mate who has more experience with android than i do.
Thought it might be a good idea to put the back up / roms there.
Just found it odd that after mouting and transferring them, they didnt actually become visible until after the partition was created?

I replied to you here knowing its a sensation forum only because when i searched this was the only relevant thread i found.
I found this tutorial and have followed it to step 5. the point of flashing the recovery.img but i get "error; cannot load recovery.img"
1. Download the correct RUU for your device and carrier!!
2. Charge the battery above 50% or for at least one hour. If the battery dies during the flashing process, you could hard brick the phone!
3. Run the RUU until the wizard comes up. While the RUU wizard is open, find the temporary folder it created. (Open Explorer in Windows and type %temp% in the navigation bar.) There will be two folders with long encrypted names. In one of them you will find ROM.zip. Open it with 7zip and extract recovery.img. Put it in the location were you've installed Android SDK tools. This is the stock HTC Recovery and it is needed to run the RUU.
4. Boot the phone into bootloader (power off, hold down volume and press power) and highlight FASTBOOT using the volume rocker and pressing power. Then connect the USB cable. You should see FASTBOOT USB.
5. Open a command prompt in Windows and navigate to the folder where you installed Android SDK tools. Flash the stock recovery extracted in step 3 above using the following command:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
6. Relock the bootloader using the following command:
fastboot oem lock
7. Re-run the RUU. It will restore the device to it's original condition, locked (though *** RELOCKED ***) and unrooted.
Once the install is done you'll have unlock the bootloader again using the token you already have from the first time, reflash CWM Recovery and re-root. All this will be 10x easier than the first time.
If you do re-root your phone, be 100% you backup the stock ROM in ClockworkMod Recovery before making changes!

Hi, I have my Desire S totally with the stock system. So S-On, bootloader locked and oficial rom 2.3.5 branded from Vodafone Spain. Finally I decided to unlock my desire S and to change the rom, etc. After reading a lot, the following are the steps i want to do for that.
Before all I would like to back up my apps, sms etc, contacts are in google so i dont worry about them.. ¿How could I do it with my stock desire S?
Once i have the back up I will perform these steps:

I read that this method has benefits over to unlock by htcdev when you want to fash custom roms, and you dont lose the warranty.

Which ruu to use I don't know. But step 3 is not necessary. All roms are pre rooted.

Aha, so once I have unlocked with revolutionary and changed the recovery I could install any custom rom and it will have root already?
Maybe before install the custom rom I should flash the new eng Hboot so i can flash ics roms, right?

I was able to root my phone with S-On
now it has an unlocked root using HTCDEV Unlock | S-ON | HBOOT 2.00.0002 | 4EXT Recovery v2.2.7 RC5
Note on the HTC dev website you have to Select the bottom option 'all other supported models' from the htc dev unlock root website
as desire S is not listed
then I downloaded a fantastic operating system ( rom) called virtuous Saga which has Sense version 3.6 and android 4.04.
( also via this forum - more thanks to mdeejay - again unable to thanks you on the forum yet)

I did not flash the firmware because I have no idea what that means and it sounded potentially hazardous and I read somewhere you cannot do it with S-ON ( whatever that actually means) - I only installed the saga ROM which works fine with nothing faulty that I have so far tested
I just installed the virtuous saga zip on my sd card, installed it from the recovery screen and then had to flash the boot.img from the zip file using flashboot from my PC
Result - Bluetooth works and my phone has lots of nice updated features also Bluetooth keyboard works perfectly now with this (Again not sure if it makes a difference but this keyboard works using a bluetooth mode called spp rather than HID) And I still have the lovely clock and weather widget - in fact it does not look much different to my old android version - just faster and smoother.
If you try this make sure that your Google account is synced and all contacts are backed up . I also used BookmarksSB to back up bookmarks, Astro to back up all my applications to the sd card, and SMS back up & restore to back up all my sms messages. all free in the Google market.
I also took my sd card out when following the steps to format and clear caches in recovery mode because I did not want to accidentally wipe my SD card.!!

Your goal is to change the rom and backup your phone's current state. Right? You can follow these simple steps:
a. Unlock bootloader by http://htcdev.com/bootloader/
b. Flash custom recovery (4EXT)
c. Backup your phone by using recovery
d. Install new rom, dont forget to flash boot.img separately (because of your phone was unlocked by htcdev.com)
e. [Optional] Root if need
The steps you're going to take are right. You should write down what RUU you have now in case you want to go back.
It looks like you know enough about rooting and flashing and the alpharev way is the best. Via HTCdev you can't install ICS if I am correct.

Thanks but I wanted to do it without using the official unlock of HTCDEV to avoid to have to flash the boot everytime I flash a rom and lose the warranty.

No, there is no "normal" way to keep your apps and their data.
You can gain temp-root and manually zip+copy the /data/ directory (to retain permissions), I suppose. But I don't think it's something you're able to do. And restoring data from it would be quite some pain, too, and require fixing permissions as far as I remember.

No way. You should s-off OR unlock bootloader first.
If you dont want to use htcdev.com to unlock bootloader, you can downgrade hboot and then s-off. Search in the "Desire S General" box, there are 3-4 thread about hboot downgrading and s-off.
Ok so I will do it without back up of apps. Just need to know wich rom to use to downgrade...

Without the data means only the apk, right? So the file to install it that most of them are already in the play store. If it is like that, it has not many advantages, but thank you anyway.
